Blu-ray future Mac Book Pro

Hi,
Am just preparing to move from powerbook 17' to a new 17' mac book pro. (key use TV Productions) However my question is should I wait until blu-ray drive availble for it? Does anyone know anything about this as an imminent development or timeframe?
Also can you use ram from powerbook (i have 2gb) in a new macbook pro?
Many thanks
Johnny

As the above poster said speculations are not welcome in these forums however this was announced on March 10th:
The Blu-ray Disc Association announced today that Apple has become a member of the consortium's Board of Directors.
"Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "Consumers are already creating stunning HD content with Apple’s leading video editing applications like iMovie HD and are anxiously awaiting a way to burn their own high def DVDs."
Blu-ray is a next-generation optical disc format being developed for High Definition video and high-capacity software applications. A Blu-ray disc will be able to hold up to 50GB of data (double layer).
During the MacWorld Expo SF Keynote speech Steve Jobs described 2005 as "the year of High Definition Video" and introduced HD video support into iMovie and Final Cut Express. Sony also demonstrated a HD Video camera at the keynote speech. The missing link has been the consumer's ability to export HD video off their Mac. It appears Blu-ray will be the technology and we can expect iDVD and burning support in the future.

  • My Mac Book Pro (2010 - Snow Leopard) won't boot, or boot from safe mode.

Hi, a bit of back ground knowledge bout the situation first, I was visiting home to see my family for two weeks in the UK, as i am currently on an internship in Dubai.
A few days ago (one day before i flew back to Dubai from the UK - Thursday 10/07/2014) I noticed out of the blue that my Mac book Pro (i believe early/mid 2010 model) suddenly started running extremely slow. (prior to this I had be using it fine, using an array of programs like Safari & Photoshop that i know usually slows down the Mac, but unlike what I would usually experience, this was pretty much a complete freeze for 5 minutes at a time every time i tried moving my mouse/closing a program or even clicking on something. I decided I would close everything and give the computer a rest. This took a long long time, I had to force quit many of the programs open, then once going to the drop down menu to shut down the laptop it wouldn't shut down. So after a long time of waiting to shut down I decided to force it to shut down by holding down the power button.
I left it for the evening, and then decided to turn on the laptop so it was 'on and working' for my flight back to Dubai as there had been 'stricter airport measures introduced in the UK for flights abroad' and there was a rumor that you had to prove that all electrical devices can be turned on when and if asked by airport security. after a long time it finally turned on and loaded the home screen, it had a long period on the grey apple screen with the turning gear. However still when turned on the problem of being extremely slow - freezing for 5 minutes every time i would click a program or something on the mac, like the drop down menu with the shut down option for example - still persisted. As I had to fly home the next morning (Friday 11/07/2014) I just closed the laptop lid like i had down thousands of times before over the past 3-4 years, packed it in my hand luggage and and went to bed. I flew back to Dubai.
Over the next few days (Saturday 11/07/2014 - Monday 14/07/2014) I used the laptop sparingly a it was super slow, but i did manage to watch the second half of the world cup runners up match between Holland & Brasil. I then went on to attempt to use the safari the on the Monday night, but it was too slow to really do anything, e.g. i couldn't even really look at the BBC website as it was too painfully slow!
This is when I decided to look up why it may be working so slow via my iphone.
    So I shut it down,
I looked on forums and support ages and first thing they recommended was a 'safe mode boot up', so I decided to boot up in safe mode. This is where the problem seems to worsen. The Mac book pro would turn on to the grey apple screen and the progress bar appears, it begins to fill up but then reaches perhaps 20-30% then suddenly the laptops fan seems to go into over drive, making lots of noise when before this moment as it tried to boot up it was silent, then it just turns off.
I decided to retry booting up without holding down shift (safe boot mode), but it returns to the grey apple screen with the progress bar again, as if it was in safe mode even though I had held down shift. The same problem happens, its silent as the bar fills until abut 20-30% then it seems to 'overheat' and then turn off again.
I tried to boot it up again and again, both 'normally' without holding down shift, and 'safe mode', but the same issue arises.
So i turned to the forums and help pages again, and there was a mention of a PRAM reset. So i tried booting it up this time but holding down 'CMD + ALT + P + R' on the moment of the first chime, then as normal with a PRAM reset it chimed twice more before I let go of the keyboard. The progress bar again appeared on the grey start up apple page, and this time reached roughly the same 20-30% mark, but without overheating or making a fan noise, it then seemed to restart the progress bar a second time. This time as it reached the 20-30% it would again over heat and then instantly turn off.
I then decided to do a Hardware test. So i turned on the power and held down 'D', this successfully brought up the Hardware testing window, I did a regular test and within a few minutes it said there was no hard ware issue. Not convinced i decided to do an detailed/advanced hardware test which took alot longer. This time after a few minutes it started to make fan noises and 'overheating noises' however completed the hardware test and again said there was no hardware problems. I opted for the 'shut down' option on the screen instead of 'restart'.
I then decided to try and boot it up normally again, and the progress bar appears on the grey apple start up screen, it again reaches 20-30% then turns off.
I've exhausted my knowledge of what to do, and all the forums seem not to give the answer i'm looking for. It sees like no one has had the EXACT same problem i'm experiencing. Also being in Dubai for a further 7 weeks, I can't take the Mac book pro to an apple store, and I do not have any of the install DVD discs ect with me to try booting from DVD disc install.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me on what I could try next? I'd be hugely grateful! Please reply below or email me.

  • HDMI capture on MAc Book pro

    Hello,
I post a new topic on this forum because I'll become crazy.
I received my TV channels by the internet. My TV box has the capability to "record" movie as a hard disk, but my provider doesn't allow to create a backup on a DVD or external support.
To do so, I'm looking for an acquisition tool (HW + SW) that I can connect by HDMI from my TV Box to my "future" Mac book pro. Does any one of you have already find this type of tool ?
I saw on the new IMAC 27" that the DVI port support also the Input mode, how does it works ?
Thanks in advance for your support and future feedback
    Alain

I have the exact same issue (I beleive you're from France with one of those IPTV services...).
I found the BlackMagic HDMI input card (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/) which is pretty cheap and does allow you to connect your set-top box via HDMI, hence capturing the video stream in 720p or 1080i.
The only issue is that you need a PCI express slot, ie a MacPro. Like you, I only have a MacBook and a MacMini, so we need an external gear... Any idea?

    Hello,
I am trying to connect my laptop to my TV. The computer flashes blue after I plug the cable in but the TV says there is no signal.
    I have a Mac Book Pro 2009 and a Samsung 32" Class (31.5" Diag.) 450 Series 720p LCD HDTV (2010 model).
I am using a mini display port to VGA adapter. I have sucessfully hooked up boh devices but it stopped working after a handful of times. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to fix the problem or is my cable broken?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html

If you have the exact same problem - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  If you have AppleCare call them!

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer was running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier and you reach the third set of steps, insert a Mac OS X install disk.

  • Mac Book Pro 17 inch to 23 inch display blue screen freezes.

Can any one help me, my mac book pro 17 is freezing when I connect it to my 23 inch apple cinema display. It works perfectly on stand alone, but once I connect the 23 cinema it toggels back and forth from blue screen on both screens then freezes, then works fine for a couple of hours. I sleep the system then when it wakes it freezes. I have disconnect the display then reconnect, this is really annoying.

No, you can't upgrade the GPU on a MaBook Pro - it's soldered onto the logic board.
    Sorry,

If you keep getting a 'red' message it means that the HDD is faulty and will have to be replaced.  You will have to format the new HDD in Disk Utility>Erase and then install the OSX and your data from Time Machine.
    Ciao.

  • Why does my mac book pro have a blue screen when booting up for a second just before the login screen

When turning on my Mac Book pro before it get to the log in screen it has a blue screen for a couple of second the goes to the login sreen. It seams to take some time to complete the login to my computer.
can anybody give me some help with this problem.
    Thank you

The cable connections have (so far) solved this problem for my situation. Even though the monitor's DVI cable was firmly connected to the mini Display port connector, when I touched it the attached monitor would go 'blue' or lose its connection entirely. After disconnecting and reconnecting this junction the monitors would still take a hit on touching the connection. I also checked the connection of the mini Display port connection to the graphics board and could not push it in any further. However, after a second go-round I unplugged this connection to the board and reconnected it. I am certain it was fully inserted the first time. But, connection contacts can oxidize over time and sometimes it may just need to be disconnected and reconnected to 're-wipe' the connections. This effectively cleans them at the point of contact. So in my case I'm thinking it was the connection age that was an issue more than a 'loose' connection. Either way, I haven't had this issue for the past two weeks.
