Blu-ray has the blues

I've been thinking a bit about this situation, particularly related to buying HD equipment. I guess the answer is that it won't be a big year for blu-ray but next year is still fairly unknown.

"The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) recently reported that sell-in indicators for Blu-ray products are proving more positive than even the most optimistic sales forecasts and market analyst reports.
"We have good reason to predict that this Q4 sales period will see the Blu-ray Disc revolution take hold in US mainstream markets and we will witness strong sales performance in every other geographical region," commented Victor Matsuda, Chairman of the BDA Global Promotions Committee.
"The 30 September release of Iron Man is another good example of Blu-ray's growing impact on movie releases. In the U.S., for the week commencing 29 September, the BD release of Iron Man is the best-selling movie of all packaged media (including DVD) on Amazon.com."
"At the IFA exhibition in Berlin last month, renowned media industry analyst Jim Bottoms (from Futuresource Consulting) predicted that in the US, Blu-ray Disc would end 2008 in an unassailable position as the next gen home entertainment packaged media format."

Are you working with native media? If you are, see if Final Cut will let you transcode a clip to Pro Res 422. Do an export test with that single clip. (Write the output to a disk image so you don't waste a disk.)

  • I purchased a blu-ray of The Hunger Games and it came with a code for a digital copy. I redeemed the code on iTunes but the download has been continuing for 2 weeks now and it never finishes! The time just keeps going up. Never an issue in the past.

I purchased the blu-ray of The Hunger Games and it came with a code to redeem for a digital copy. I redeemed the code in iTunes and the movie downloaded fine, but the "EXTRAS" have been downloading for 2 weeks! Everytime I launch iTunes it starts the download again and the counter keeps going UP, at one point it said it would take 3 weeks. I have paused and restarted the download, I have deleted the download, nothing works to finish or stop this download! Does anyone have a clue what's up?

ps when syncing it jumps through steps 1 - 4 real fast, i seem to remeber iphone showing the number of tracks transferring and names, but i see nothing? then it sits on 5 saying "waiting for changes to be applied"

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • I recently authored a DVD. Is there a way to make it into a Blu Ray using the same project settings?

All my titles, menus, etc are in 720x480.  I'm not sure how to upscale it.
I tried just exporting as a Blu Ray, and the quality is terrible, the video menus are all screwy.  Also, I am getting Media Offline messages on footage that works perfectly fine on DVD. I tried burning straight to disc and also to an ISO.
    Thanks.

They would be! you have tried to scale up from 720x480 in non-square pixels to (possibly) 1920x1080, and you cannot expect to do that & have it look any good.
For HD, start using images that are ideally lossless (no JPEG) bitmaps or Tiff files are best, I find, and create your menu at the right resolution.
Please also check that the resolution & frame rate you are using is also BD legal.

  • Can we Play the Blu-ray on the latest Macbook Air?

There is some way available for playing Blu-ray on iMac, what you need is a external BD drive and Mac Blu-ray Player, is the way also apply for the Macbook Air?

Now Mac still can't support Blu-ray, but the way to do this is almost the same, an external or internal Blu-ray drive plus Blu-ray player software. Both can be found on Amazon

  • HT201210 my phone won't turn on after trying to restore it with iTunes what do i do??!! also it just has the blue music app with an arrow and power cord on it. HELP!

My phone will NOT turn back on after trying to restore it with itunes. It just has the blue music app with an arrow & the usb side of the power cord on it.
    Help me please!!

    Hello Sean,
It sounds like you are constantly needing to restore your phone because it keeps going into recovery mode. Usually putting a device into recovery mode and restoring it can help isolate an issue to your iPhone hardware if an issue persists afterwards. I would try manually putting it into recovery mode and restoring it 1 more time:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If that does not resolve it the symptoms indicate to me that it is a hardware issue causing this to happen and would seek service for it:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Blu-ray DL vs Blu-ray SL

Hello, i want to know is there any quality difference b/n Blu-ray Dual Layer & Blu-ray Single Layer ? i mean in picture quality.

    Esmael,
No, there shouldn't be. Well, dual layer just gives you more space. So if you are encoding a lot of video to put on one disc, then the single layer is going to force to you encode at a lower bit-rate to make everything fit, thus lower quality.

  • Blu-ray Has Won The War

Now that Toshiba has given up on HD-DVD, I wonder what will happen to Blu-ray prices. They have to get cheaper for Blu-ray to become popular, but without competition, it may be awhile. Anyway, at some point, FCX users will finally have a way to output our HD content.

  • Why is it only possible to get French Language Films via iTunes France - I can buy Blu-ray in the Supermarket in multiple language?  It makes no sense!

I am English Speaking My wife is Dutch my Children speak 3 Languages.  We love AppleTV BUT we can only get films (in general) in Version Originale (French Only) and this makes no sense...
We can go to the local supermarket and buy DVDs and Blu-ray Discs that allow us to watch the up-to-date movies in a range of languages so why not on this AppleTV OTT service?
    It makes no sense.
Just because we live in France does not mean we want to watch Hollywood Movies in French?
So much for What you Want-When you want-Wherever you are...

It really does have to do with content permissions. The studios that release the Bluray and DVD versions might not always be the rights bearer to the film, they just bear rights to distribute it on physical media. Most films are made by different companies, then released by Sony, Paramount, and other distribution channels. But in the online realm, different disributors own the rights (and Apple doesn't participate with them or is unable to in some countries). Perhaps Sony distributed films will sell in your local store or be played by a Sony owned TV station locally. But perhaps online Sony doesn't hold that distribution rights to distribute the film online, Warner Brothers or somebody else does. Therefor, they don't allow it online in that market. The licensing is in limbo.
Most American films I buy in China on DVD from Wal Mart, are distributed by a Chinese company and not the original American film studio. Also in USA, the price for a new DVD is about $20 USD, in China it is only $2 USD. So to limit everyone in USA from buying Chinese DVDs at a cheaper price to watch American movies, they put content restrictions on the media (ie. the DVD region codes) so the DVD won't play in an American player.
The same goes for online rights. Your local government, copyright offices and local content license holders do not distribute the movie you want online. They distribute it on physical media or TV broadcast. But they have not secured permission or agreed on what price to sell the movies for online in your market. Apple has no say in this. In fast, the only store Apple controls in the US store. All other local iTunes stores are really virtual stores in place for locals to buy from local distributors.
The Chinese people are in no hurry to download from the US iTunes store because it cost too much. But if the Americans could download from the Chinese iTunes store, they could buy any movie they like for less than $1 and all the money goes to China, and not the US. Hence the restriction.
So copyright holders are just fighting over prices and rights and don't want to or legally can't release it online in your local store.

  • Blu-Ray, is the MacPro powerful enough?

I have been waiting 3 years for a new Mac that offers the same video editing programs and supper speed for editing HD video as is currently offered for SD on older Macs.
I have been editing video on my Mac for years, making all my PC friends jealous. iMovie and iDVD make and creating a "standard" DVD fun, easy and fast.
Now, I am ready for HD.
I am NOT speculating, or expecting any of the below, but I am GROW IMPATIENT!!!
Are the current MacPro's powerful enough to make and creating 1080p HD fun, easy and fast plus burning full length HD movies to Blu-Ray?
I assume companion programs in iLife (e.g. iHDMovie and iDVDHD) which I again assume will be offered as part of Mac OS X v10.5.? Leopard.
Or am I doomed to wait another 5 or 6 years?

Why have you been waiting? Everything needed has been available for about two years. HD-DV cameras can connect via FireWire. If you want it uncompressed, you can use a PCI-e card
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP150LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDExOA&mco=MjIzODEzNA>
iMovie and FCP can edit in HD. You can record the result back to the camcorder via FireWire, burn HD onto a DVD, or onto a Blu-ray disc with Toast
    <http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/pro/overview.html>
A Blu-ray drive can be installed in the second optical slot, or in an external case.

  • HT1539 If I have a digital copy of a movie that came with the Blu-Ray will the digital copy be full HD, 1080?

I bought the Toy Story 4 disc Blu Ray so it came with the DVD, Blu-Ray and digital copy. I downloaded the digital copy but it didn't come in full 1080 HD. Can I get the digital copy in Full 1080 HD?

    You can't without the code.

  • HT201272 I typed in a digital copy code to get Rise of the Guardians on here because I bought the blu-ray, but the digital copy won't download no matter what I do. Why won't it download? Right now I am very angry for not getting the digital copy.

I purchased Rise of the Guardians on blu-ray, I typd in the digital copy code that came in the case, the ituns extras downloaded, but no matter what I do, the digital copy of the actual movie won't download. Why won't it download? I've tried everything I could think of, but nothing works, it just simply does not want to download.

Ok, a new digital copy of Rise of the Guardians started downloading automatically at no extra cost, I admit that I was thrilled, but now my happiness is gone because the new digital copy of Rise of the Guardians simply won't play. Nothing works with it except for the iTunes extras again. I'm getting really tired of this. Why won't it play and why give a digital copy if it refuses to work? Please someone help me out here!
