Blu-Ray Optical Drive

Is it possible to install a Blu-Ray optical drive (read/write) into the Mac Pro? Will the Apple software author a BD disk then? I am very interested in being able to do this. Thanks.

I've had a Lacie External Blu-Ray for a while now and can confirm it would also work fine internally. The big issue with Blu-Ray and Apple at the moment is that the only way to author a Blu-Ray disc to work in PS3's and other Blu-Ray drives is to use Adobe Encore/Premiere. Then you come across another issue, Encore/Premiere is not compatible with Leopard. As mentioned here, Toast works flawlessly and is great for backups but that's where it ends.
Blu-Ray drives are coming down all the time so my advice would be wait 2-3 months and by then everything will have moved on hugely now that Blu-Ray appears to be winning the war.
If you want to author HD movies from your camera, buy an AppleTV and export for that. AppleTV is one of the most underrated pieces of Apple hardware ever and if the rumours are true that it will be dropped shortly, get one quick. Loads less hassle than Blu-Ray and works flawlessly.

  • Blu-ray optical drive no longer plays Blu-ray discs. Will play all other discs

I have a HP Pavilion Elite hpe-510y desktop pc. HP product # bv538aa#aba.  Optical drive has stopped playing and recognizing Blu-ray discs. All other discs play fine. I didn't notice this problem for awhile because I don't always play Blu-ray discs on my PC. I don't know if their was an update or if the optical drive has just gone bad. I am not sure if its a hardware or software problem. Has anyone else had this problem with this model. Would appreciate any help you can give me in this matter. Thank You. Dennis

    Dennis, welcome to the forum.
I suggest uninstalling the drive.  You can do this by going into Control Panel / Device Manager / DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right click on your drive and select "Uninstall".  Then, reboot the computer.  Windows will indentify it and reinstall it.

  • Experience with MCE internal Blu Ray optical drive

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17".  The was the last 17" laptop that Apple produced.  A MacBook Pro Retina 15" is just not an alternative, as setting the display to the same resolution as the 17" produces letters that are too small to read.  So I have been "souping up" the 17".  I've expanded the memory to 16 GB and replaced the HDD by a 1 TB SDD.  Now I'm considering replacing the optical drive by an MCE internal optical drive that supports Blu Ray (http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=UNBBD6X -A&Category_Code=STORBD).  Has anybody done this?  If so, have you encountered any problems or limitations?

I use a Lacie D2 external Blu-ray drive on my Mc Pro.
It is not possible to play Blu-ray DVD's using Mac OS X as OS X does not support Blu-ray. To watch Blu-ray movies on a Mac you will need to use Windows software such as that made by Cyberlink (http://cyberlink.com/). You can burn Blu-ray data disks and Blu-ray video disks on the Mac Pro using Toast 9, and you can do more extensive authoring of Blu-ray disks on the Mac using Adobe's Encore CS4.

  • Blu Ray Optical Drives

Do you need a special Blu Ray Drive to play Blu Ray movies???? or will any Blu Ray drive play 3d movies???
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hello funkman99.
I understand you are inquiring as to whether any BluRay player will play 3D movies or if you require a special BluRay Player. The answer is you need a 3D BluRay Player to play 3D Movies on. Additionally, you need a 3D monitor and a 3D movie. Anyone of these is missing and you will not get the full experience.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Installing a Blu Ray Opitcal Drive in G5

    Hello,
I've just recently brought a PlayStation 3 and enjoying the Blu Ray goodness! though looking at the Power Mac G5 and its current dvd optical drive i was wondering if i can install a Blu Ray Rewriter in the g5 and whether Leopard and the apple software like FCP, iDVD etc would understand it.
its cool to see the blu ray rewriter optical drives are quite cheap looking at ebuyer.com there costing from £150 to £280 depending which model you buy.
is anyone thinking of a blu ray optical rewriter drive?
    thanks, John

  • Upgrade to Blu-Ray Optical DVD-RW for HP DV-5

Ok, thanks to MumboDog my hard drive issues are fully resolved.  Thanks MumboDog.  Now my next question is I've been having problems with the button not opening my optical drive.  I can bypass the button with the paper clip trick, but who wants to carry a paper clip with them?
So I was wondering if I could remove this drive and install a blu-ray optical dvd-rw for the HP DV-5?  Anyone have suggestions on where to buy, model no., or any suggestions as to a temporary fix to my current situation.  By the way, the drive shows up in the BIOS but its currently not reading any cd's or dvd's.  Could I be missing a driver?  I did install the LightScribe drivers, got all current updates and installed Windows 7.
Thanks in advance for any and all of your thoughts and suggestions.

Use device manager to uninstall the DVD drive, reboot and let windows reinstall it automatically, see if it works now.
The problem with upgrading optical drives in notebooks is the the tray bezel is unique to each model, and some are not removeable so you cannot transfer it to the new drive.
I use to buy generic optical drives from electronics retailers to replace broken ones in notebooks, take the old bezel off and transfer it to the new one, this way it looks like it belongs on the notebook like the original, but I have noticed they are no longer removeable on some models, so if you want it to look right you need to order it from HP.

  • Encore CS4 does not recognize Blue Ray External Driver

I just bought a LG blue ray external drive writer which comes with Cyberlinks SW. From Premiere, I opened Encore to burn (build) a sequence on the LG Blue-Ray burner, but it does not work: - In En Project setting, the “Player” is grayed-out and only “Adobe Player” is displayed. - In En Build tab, when I choose the Format as Blue Ray and Output as Blue Ray Disk, the Build button is grayed out and Recorder shows None Found. However when I change the Format to DVD, the Build settings automatically change and the Recorder LG Blue Ray is shown. How do I make En to recognize the LG Blue Ray and burn in Blue ray format? Thanks, Vlad.

There are many threads in the Encore forum regarding reasons that burners are not seen. Most of these problems can be traced back to specific software, and most of the rest have to do with how the hardware is set up. You can find most of these in the main forum, and the Burning DVD sub-forum, with a Search.
First thing that I'd check is that your OS sees your hardware. In Windows, Control Panel>System>Device Manager. Check here (or within your OS) to make sure that it's just not a bad installation.
    Good luck,

  • External Blue Ray Disk Drive and T61, Or is one available for the Ultra Bay yet?

    Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone has a Blue Ray Disk Drive connected to there T61? Can the T61 handle a Blue Ray Disk Drive? The reason I am asking is because I was thinking of getting one for my T61 and then playing Blue Ray movies thru my LCD TV, the LCD TV being monitor #2. Would the quality be as good as a normal Blue Ray player that is hooked to the TV? My graphics card is Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M. Thank you for in advance for any advice on this.

  • My iMac Keeps on try to boot on my external Blu-ray disk drive

My iMac Keeps on try to boot on my external Blu-ray disk drive and not the hard drive. Therefore when I turn it on, it boots up and then it go pass the sound and the apple logo come up on screen but then it frezzes and noing happens; even if I hold down the power button.
    System Software Overview:
    Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
    Boot Mode: Normal
It should not boot off the Blu-ray read/wrigt.
    iMac from 2013 Q1
Blu-ray is LG read/wrigt for Blu-rays, HD DVDs, DVDs and CDs pluged in by USB

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall those 3rd-party items that Roger pointed out, one at a time, and restart. Continue until you determine which ones are causing the problem. If KP while in safe mode, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

  • I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive.

I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive. What is the best way to burn a BluRay disk? I read about TOAST etc but they are getting bad reviews. What software is the best? Im running mountain lion of course. Anyone know of good software to burn this type of disk that ACTUALLY works?

    Okay, a couple of things:
I still use (mostly) an old version of iMovie because it was/is the only version which will process footage losslessly. However, the newer versions are okay - just do not use the automatic share option, but use  the export to quicktime option where you have many options as to quality, size, etc:
You will wind up with a .mov file you can drag into Toast to burn (or iDVD to add menus and burn). If in iDVD, you can either burn directly (but not bluray) or make a VIDEO_TS folder which can be dragged into Toast - I also use that if I want to keep a copy to burn later as it has all the necessary files so you can ditch or archive all your clips, etc.

  • Blu ray slot drive for macbook

anybody know of a 3rd party blue ray slot drive for the macbook?
will this void my applecare warranty? thanks.

I just got off the phone with an Apple Engineer assigned to working with our company with the following information...
No, there is currently no MacBook Compatible BR drive either from Apple or any (known) 3rd Party Vendor. Also, it would void your stock or AppleCare Warranty due to the nature of the upgrade to what Apple Classifies as 'Non-User-Serviceable' parts.
Assuming you could get a drive that works and pay an Apple Certified Tech to put it in, in theory you might retain your warranty as long as you were willing to return the machine to the stock Combo/SuperDrive anytime you needed service.

  • DVD & Blu Ray Burner Drive Trays Do Not Stay Open When Media is in the Drive

I have a problem with both Windows 8/8.1 and the Windows 10 Technical Preview (there is no issue when I run Windows 7).
I have 2 optical drives: 1) DVD Burner and 2) Blu Ray Burner (I just got the second drive a few weeks ago). They are attached to the secondary SATA Chip (see below for specifics).
The problem I'm having is that when I eject media from either drive, the drive does not stay open, but rather immediately closes. Before I got the Blu Ray Burner, I had this problem with just the single DVD Burner by itself. I was hoping when I installed
Windows 10 Technical Preview that this problem would not be present, but it is present in that O/S as well.
This problem will repeat continuously if I attempt to use the eject button and so I either have to grab the disc while the tray is moving, or if I press the eject button again on the drive at the right time, I can get it to re-open and not close (this
is tricky to get the button timing right as it seems like it has to be done close to when the drive tray is fully extended when it starts retracting). It usually takes me 5 to 10 button presses to get it to stay open. Sometimes it will stay open for about
0.5 to 1s before it closes again, but most of the times it just immediately closes. I also have the same problem if I use the software eject feature by right clicking on the drive and choosing eject.
Of course, the expected behavior is that pressing the eject button should open the tray, but not close it immediately allowing you to remove the disc.
Here is some background information about my system and how the drives are connected:
    1. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-ED3P Revision 1.0 LGA 775
    2. Interface (for both drives): Gigabyte SATA II Chip - 2 x SATA 3 GB/s connectors (GSATA2_0, GSATA2_1) supporting up to 2 SATA 3 GB/s devices
    3. Memory: 8 GB (4 x 2 GB)
It should be noted that I tri-boot between Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 Technical Preview and that this issue is not present in Windows 7, but has always been there in Windows 8/8.1 and now it is present in 10TP as well.
I've had this system for just over 6 years now and it is still going strong. It should be noted that I have both drives on the secondary SATA chip (as identified above), which is meant to be used with removable SATA devices.
Since the problem exhibits itself in both Windows 8/8.1 and 10TP, a reinstall of the O/S will have no affect on this problem and so this appears to be some other issue that is consistent between Windows 8/8.1 and 10TP.
I'd appreciate your support in looking at this issue - thanks!

    Hey Zagayer,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
As you now have two optical drives in your Mac Pro, you need to be able to choose which drive to eject.  That is built into the system.  You just hold the Option key while tapping eject for the 2nd drive.
OS X Mountain Lion: Eject a disk
