Blue desktop screen, no screensavers or desktop pix after 10.5.8 update

Immediately after updating to 10.5.8 - using the Combo updater and yes, fixing permissions before and after the update - I was brought to my familiar desktop with the standard issue blue background. I tried accessing the Desktop/Screensaver preference pane via both System Preferences and right-clicking the desktop, but selected desktop pics won't load, and screensavers fail with an error message saying:
Can't load screen saver.
Screen saver “Cosmos” did not load properly. Please select another screen saver.
Error: Can’t load bundle
And yes, I tried all the screensavers...
What gives?

There's no such thing as garbage on the screen. Try to be a little bit more specific. Are you stuck at blue screen?apple and spinning gear?does it load the desktop?You can't expect an accurate answer if your explanation is VAGUE. anyway, follow the steps below as it may fix your "issue" I am not even sure what it is.
1. Boot into safe mode (pressing shift while turning on the machine)wait until you see the Apple with spinning gear. Then let go.
2. Once you have safe boot. Login normally. Download the 10.5.8 combo update

3. Apply the update once more.
If this fails,
1. Boot to the install disc. Select the language
2. Ignore the welcome screen. Choose utilities on the top
3. Repair disc and permission DO BOTH

I went to the link. I selected iPHONE. There was a big iPhone icon above the comment box -- so I was absolutely, positively on the right page. I spent five minutes or so crafting a constructive comment as to why I wanted the full photo feature back on incoming calls on iOS7. Then...i noticed the box below the comment area asked 'What operating system are you on?'. And the drop down selection list included every operating system since Job's garage days -- but not one single iOS entry. No iOS entries on an iphone page. Unless I'm missing something, I think anyone writing a feedback comment is wasting his/her time.

Shuffle Pictures Screen Saver / Energy Saver not working after 3.1.1 update

Hello,
I've noticed that my Screen Saver has not been kicking in lately and thus my iMac hasn't progressed to the full Energy Saver profile settings (Computer Sleep in 1.5 hrs & Display Sleep in 30 mins). Screen Saver is set to shuffle random pictures from a folder in my Aperture library.
I'm not sure if it is linked or not, but I only noticed this problem after installing the latest update to Aperture (3.1.1) from the Software Update. Since they may be linked I am cross-posting this question in the Aperture discussions as well.
Any suggestions on what may be causing my problem and how to fix it?

try Resetting it up, I run in that problem with adding images, I end up having to click of the the folder than click on the folder I want than it updates...

Screen flashes instead of alert sound after 10.4.11 update

After updating to 10.4.11 about 2 weeks ago I noticed that my screen flashes whenever an alert sound should occur. It looks just like the "Flash screen when an alert sound occurs" option found in the Universal Access (Hearing) settings. I toggled the setting found there, but even when it's set to off, my flashing screen alert continues to occur. I know a friend of mine who experienced the exact same problem, but he hasn't found a solution to this (minor, but annoying) problem yet either. I also talked to a "genius" at the local Apple store. He hadn't heard about the problem and couldn't offer a solution either.
Is anybody else experiencing a flashing screen alert? How does one get rid of it? Thanks.

this solved it for me:
i checked my system alerts and found that the alert sound was set to some invalid legacy sound called AIM - probably left over from when i used AIM instead of iChat.
i set the alert sound back to one of the original Apple sounds and viola! No More Flashing Screen!!!

Once the desktop is up and the iMac ready to use, open Systeem Preferences (Apple menu) and click the Startup Disk item. In the new screen, make sure that OS X on your hard drive is selected in the top row - click it once to make sure. Then test.

Macbook Desktop Screen turns blue automatically

My desktop screen turns solid aqua dark blue which is a default wall paper screen, it turns like this anytime, usually when i quit any app. Log off or sleep is also not working for the problem. Kindly suggest me solution.

if you have the install disc that came w/ your mac, you can insert that and then restart holding the C key to boot to the disk.
open disk utility and run repair disk, depending on the results you may have to reinstall the OS.
also you can run the apple hardware test, the following article tells how to do that:

Desktop Screen Flashes Between a Blue Screen and a Desktop Screen

Problem: After logging in, the screen flashes the Start Screen on and off in random fashion, and is unresponsive to any input.
Effort: We followed the instructions on the HP web site for this symptom (Desktop Screen Flashes Between a Blue Screen with a Blank Taskbar and a Desktop Screen on Startup (Windows 8)), but it failed at step 8 - the Start Screen flashes in Safe Mode with no way to find or enter the "Control Panel" step. We have also rolled back the system to the last restore point, reseated the memory, and reset the BIOS - all HP recommended processes for video problems.
Current Status: We always look to resolve any problems via the HP web site first; this one had us stumped. We went to the "Contact HP" to chat with a service agent, but discovered that our warranty expired eight days ago. We were directed to this forum for assistance. The laptop is my son's and is being used for his college courses. We need any help you can provide as quickly as possible. Thanks!

G4 Quicksilver freezes at desktop screen requiring PRAM reset.

Hi,
I recently got a used G4 dual 1 GHZ Quicksilver with two internal hard drives(80 & 40GB). I made some mistakes when I first received it, being used to running OS 9 on a blueberry G3 with one hard drive, and now it frequently freezes after a cold start at the desktop screen.
When I first got it, it had two HDs installed. The slave HD had OS 9.2.2 loaded on it and the master had OSX 10.4.7. Unfortunately, being used to OS9 right away I tried to open an application (Internet Explorer) on the OS 9(slave) hard drive from the desk top while running the OSX hard drive(master HD). As a result, the computer sarted opening a huge file.
My wife came home for luch and I needed to leave. I tried to stop the program, I couldn't. I tried to shut down the computer, it wouldn't. So, I unplugged the computer. Second mistake.
When I got home I couldn't turn the computer on. With some research I discovered how to reset the PMU. That did it.
Unfortunately, I still hadn't learned to not try to open one hard drive while running the other without selecting it as a startup item. As a result, late that night I tried a half dozen more times to open an application on the OS 9 (slave) hard drive while not understanding that I was running the master HD. All with the same result. It took 15 minutes to open ending with a text block about the "21 day trial period for IPNetSentry" having expired then total lock up. Then I restarted and repeated the same mistake. The only thing that stopped me was that it was 2:30 in the morning. Sounds pretty stupid now. I then tried to find all the threads of this IPNet Sentry and trash them.
The next morning my current problem seemed to begin. The screen freezes once I get to the desktop screen. I can reset the PRAM and all is fine again until the next time I turn the computer off and start it up again. It doesn't happen every time. It will happen for a few days, go away then after a week or so start acting up again. I also noticed that it doesn't lock up when I use restart, only when it is all the way off and turned on again.
Here's what I have done to try to resolve the problem. I scrubbed both hard drives using the restore software, and I replaced the PRAM or back up battery. The apple hardware test disk passes everything.
One more big clue. When I was reloading the restore software on the master HD I got the messages "!Could not restore the restricted-segment image. Reading block 00174A440." and then "The restore failed. The volume 'MacIntosh HD' may be unusable." Another time the first text block was the same except the reading block was 002141B0. Major bummer. It took four or five tries before I get get all five of the restore disks to install.
In another forum I found someone else with a similar message and a responder said that the hard drive may have gotten scratched. His thinking was that in trying to open a big file (in this case, the application on the slave HD while running the master HD) that the memory got used up and spilled into virtual memory and somehow scratched the master HD.
If anyone has any ideas of things to try before I go out and by another hard drive I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

So, it sounds like you are saying that the Ultra ATA-100 will work in my machine.
Yes, an Ultra ATA-100 or Ultra ATA-133 hard drive should work just fine, and your G4 does not have a 128GB size limitation so you can use any size you desire as long as you format the drive with OS X 10.2 or a later version of OS X Disk Utility. There's no real practical performance difference between using an ATA-100 versus ATA-133 drive with the drive bus on your Mac. One thing that does help drive performance, however, is the drive buffer size. Given the choice, get a drive with an 8MB buffer over one with a 2MB buffer. If you will be looking in the 300GB and larger range, some drives are available with a 16MB buffer.
A new drive typically comes with a new 80-wire, 40-pin, Ultra DMA ribbon cable; drive pin jumpers, and a set of mounting screws. I'd use the new cable and jumper the drives as master and slave. You should have no issues with new slave drive of any size, either. Also, with a two-drive setup on a single ribbon cable, it does not matter which drive is connected to the inline or end connector, as long as one is jumpered as master and the other as slave.
Crucial arguably produces the highest quality RAM, although it's pricey. I've been using RAM from OWC and Kingston without issue. Regardless of where you might decide to get more RAM, I'd suggest doing hardware additions in phases, rather than all at once. It gives one an opportunity to test the configuration before making the next addition; and if there's a problem, it's often much easier to pinpoint. I'd straighten out my drive issues, run the Mac for a couple of weeks, then order/install new RAM, for example.
BTW - If you do get a new drive(s) and need some help with drive pin settings, or perhaps might be looking for some tips on setting them up with a backup plan, there are plenty of folks here who can offer helpful advice.

Why No Desktop / Screen Saver Photos After Upgrade to 3.3.1?

After upgrading to Aperture 3.3.1, no Aperture Desktop / Screen Saver images appear. Message "Unable to locate XXX" comes on. When I went into System Preferences, I find my iPhoto Library I have but NO Aperture Library & resulting Projects & Albums.
I can open Aperture, import new photos, scroll thru all my Projects, Albums, Folders etc just NOT see them in Desktop / Screensaver.

How can you use AirPlay Mirroring to always show one of your open desktop screens?

I have Mountain Lion on a 2011 Mac, and have a number of desktop screens which I use regularly.
My question is, how do I choose only one of those open desktop screens to beam to Apple TV via mirroring? For example, so that I can show a presentation on the projector screen (via Apple TV) and read the slide notes directly from a word document on the Mac screen (which the audience cannot see) or for example, to beam a full screen DVD to my TV so that the family can watch it, whilst I continue to actually work on the Mac on a different desktop screen?

I understand your problem but don't think it's possible:( My only solution is to play my tutorials from the networked drive to my ATV2 while following along with the exercise materials. If you've found a solution please let me know? I thought it'd be possible to assign mirroring to one desktop, like I think you said in the original post, with some type of terminal command but no luck yet. Thanks

Time Machine on my iMac won't open iPhoto. It goes to desktop screen automatically. When I select User/Picture/Iphoto library it only brings up the preview page with the size of the folder. I can't get into the library to look for lost photos.

Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos. Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

My external hard drive doesn't show up on my desktop screen

I have a 1TB external drive that connects by USB. I use it as a Time Machine and for other storage. It worked fine until a few weeks ago. Now, when I connect it, the drive starts spinning, but it doesn't show up on the desktop screen or in Disk Utility.
Other USB drives and devices work fine when plugged into either of my USB ports. Also, this particular 1TB drive works fine with my older MacBook. It's just that this particular external drive and this particular MacBook Pro don't seem to be working together.
Thoughts?

Does it show up in disk utility
remove and reconnect the USB connector on the drive end., check Finder > prefences > general ....is hard disks checked?
Have you used this HD on that Mac before?
Does this HD show in another machine/ Mac?
