Blue G3 20" Studio Display

I have a monitor that has never worked properly. Two weeks after buying the said product the picture went, it then took a further 6 months to get the monitor returned and fixed. Two weeks after it came back the picture went vertical on me, the width is fine but I have 3/4 the height that it should be. Everything else is fine except for the height, sometimes I get full height but it always reverts to 3/4 height, I can adjust the height in prefs and nothing will happen and then at some point the picture will go to a stupid size so I adjust the height or set it back to factory defaults, and then at some point the height will revert back to 3/4. I've had the monitor for 6 years now and its always been like this. Anyone with any idea? Please dont suggest buying a new monitor because I not made of money.

Hi Peter,
Presumably this is a CRT display? If that is the case, maybe contacting a television repair service may be an option.
As regards buying another monitor, there are heaps of CRT monitors out there, no longer being used, and of low resale value. At least have a look around, you may be surprised at how cheap it is to get one.
Cheers!

  • Wrong Screenresolution on Apple 15" analog Studio Display under 10.5

    Hi everybody,
I'm still using one of the good old blue TFT 15" Studio Displays with VGA and ADB connectors as my secondary display. The correct resolution should be 1024x768px at either 60hz or 75hz.
When the display is connected and I start the machine, the display shows a scaled narrow image and display settings show me that the screen is running at 1280x768px (funny .
When disconnected at start time and connected later on, the display runs fine.
I tried the usual stuff like resetting the pram and so on.
Before updating to 10.5 everything was fine. Any ideas what might be wrong ?
    Best regards,
    Matt

    Hello,
I'm just using the following as an example:
<MacBook Pro (2.4/2.2GHz): External display only supports 1440 x 900 after Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Leopard Graphics Update
    Symptoms
An external display connected to a MacBook Pro (2.4/2.2GHz) may only support 1440 x 900 resolution after installing Mac OS X 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics Update.

Perhaps there is a firmware update you need... check out this link... the very first Mac OS update to 10.5.4. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

  • 17in CRT Studio Display (Blue & White)-blinking power button

I have an Apple 17in Studio Display (CRT-Blue and White vintage) connected to my Power Mac G5.
Last night, I went home, and turned it on..or rather tried to turn it on but found it stayed black, with the power button blinking green->amber->green->amber etc.
As far as the computer was concerned, the monitor was still there and working (dual monitors...the mac kept the b&w as if it was turned on).
I swapped the monitors to the different video ports and the other monitor worked fine, so it's not the video card or vga->digital adapters.
I unplugged the monitor and replugged it, and it stayed with the blinking light.
Restarting the computer with the monitor attached had the computer still running as if the monitor was working just fine, so it seems to be getting what ever kind of feedback the mac gets to let it know a video card is there.
Anyone have any idea what could be up?

  • Old Blue & White Studio Display

Hope this is the right forum for this one.
I have one of the Blue and White Studio LCD displays (Model 4551) which goes with my trusty B&W G3. I am about to get the backlights replaced as they are a little tired now and I was thinking that it might be possible to replace the actual LCD panel with a more modern one that has better contrast and viewing angles than the old one. Just wondered if any one has tried this or indeed found a suitable replacement panel at all.
Not cost effective I know but I would like any info anyway.

  • Studio Display 21" with Mac Mini?

I am considering getting a Mac Mini as an economical upgrade to my B/W G3 system but I want to make sire that my monitor is going to work with it. I have the origingal blue and white 21" Studio Display. the System Profiler says this......
    Displays:
    Studio Display 21:
    Display Type: CRT
    Resolution: 1152 x 870 @ 75 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Not Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
Will this display work with a new Mac Mini? I really do not have the $ right now to get a new Monitor and this one works great anyway. I am also wondering how my current software,,,,,,, Photoshop,Indesign etc. will work with the new Intel Macs?
    THanks for any input

Can't help on the screen much - believe you need to get an adapter, as the previous post indicated. You might check in the Apple dislay area at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=111
Regarding your applications, as long as you're not running under OS 9 or earlier, your applications will run on the Intel mini under Rosetta emulation. Universal applications are those that have been modified to run on both the PPC and Intel macs, and they run natively. Those applications that have not been made universal run under Rosetta emulation. Photoshop is an example of an application that has not been made universal yet (supposed to happen this year with Photoshop CS3). Running under emulation does extract a performance penalty, of up to 50%, versus running in native universal mode.
If you have applications running under OS9 or in the OS X classic environment, you'll need to upgrade to an OS X version in order to run on the Intel-based mini, and you may find there are Universal versions of your software, which would be even better.

  • Display Problem - Video noise with 15" Powerbook and 23" Studio Display

I just bought a used 23" Studio Display to act as a second monitor for my 1.0 GHz 15" Powerbook. In my set up, the display is rather noisy -- there are consistant flickering lines of white pixels throughout the display. The lines are worst in dark areas, though they may just be showing up under contrast. The Powerbook it is connected to still looks normal.
The first strange thing is that the display works perfectly with another 1.25 GHz 15" Powerbook I have to test it on. In both cases, I have connected the monitor to the Powerbooks with a new Apple brand powered DVI to ADV Adapter.
The second strange thing is that the display seemed to act fine until I reinstalled my Wacom tablet driver so that it would work with dual displays. I've uninstalled the driver, but it the problem is still there.
The third strange thing is that the display is fine while booting up. The blue boot up screen is very crisp looking and noiseless. It only starts showing noise when the login screen shows up.
Any thoughts about what may be causing the problem or how to fix it would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Powerbook 15" G5 dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   23" studio display

Well I called AppleCare yesterday and, believe it or not, we actually got the USB ports acting normally - well at least I can boot up with the keyboard plugged into the back of the monitor.
They had me reset the Open Firmware and that seemed to do the trick. Of course, the night before I updated to 10.4.10 so that may have had something to do with it, too. No idea.
As for the power sensor button thing, they wanted me to plug the monitor into a different system, either at a Genius Bar or a friend or whatnot to see if it would behave in the same manner - not wanting to activate. I took it to school with me and hooked it up to one of my teacher's G5 and it behaved the same way. It took like 15 times touching the sensor to bring the system up.
So I'll be calling them back and see where they want to go with this. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a new shiny monitor - or not...

    Powerbook 15" G5 dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   23" studio display

It's plug and play, so that's not an issue.
The debate about running the clamshell closed is so that, if the extra desktop space is not required, there is no point "stressing" the video ram and videocard and cpu by having the other display running - all resources can turn to the external display.
As for extending the desktop, yes you can do that with Photoshop - you have the space of the PB and the new display, entirely up to you what you put where - just drag across.
Performance wise, I don't imagine that Photoshop would cause as many difficulties as say video editing might, and I've not come across anyone saying that they have had performance issues from running the extra display - you may get some extra heat as the processor is taxed though.
If in doubt, you could test at an Apple Store or reseller.
Also, you might find getting extra ram a useful upgrade.
Hope that helps, best of luck.

  • 15" Apple Studio Display problems

I have an old 15" Apple Studio Display (Blueberry) that I'm using with my MacPro. Every once and awhile it will flicker. It acts like it turns off and then on. The screen never goes black. I can still see whatever is on the screen. In fact, it gets larger for a split second.
The connection is good. No loose cables.
I am sharing the monitor with the Blue and White G3 using a Belkin Flip.
    Any ideas?

Do you hear a zapping sound when it happens? It could be high voltage arcing. Blowing out dust might help.

  • Apple Mac Studio Display 23" cinema with plastic surround

Does anyone have any idea what this monitor might be worth nowadays.

I'm not sure exactly which ATI Rage 128 video card you have. If your video card has only a VGA output, and your display is the clear acrylic ADC version, you'll probably have to replace the video card with one with DVI digital output. As far as I know, there aren't any VGA-to-DVI or VGA-to-ADC adapters. Alternately, there are lots of LCD monitors for PCs that have VGA 15-pin inputs, and that would be the easy way to go.
If there are 2 outputs on the card, a VGA 15-pin and a DVI-D connector (that's what's on my AGP graphics G4, and it looks sort of like a SCSI port with a flat pin at one end), and you have one of the clear 15" ADC Studio Displays, you need to get one of Apple's DVI-to-ADC adapters, $99.95 at the Apple store. It will plug into the DVI output and supply power for the display.
There are early model Apple 15" Studio Displays, a Blue & White version which has a VGA input which will work with your card, and a Graphite version which I think has a DVI connector.

  • 15" Studio Display ?

I was wondering if there is anyway to fix/save a 15" Apple Studio Display (LCD with Blue Back) there is one for sale but it has the display cord cut off.

I don't understand why are these monitors so hard to find ?
The monitors in general or that particular part?
That monitor was discontinued 6 years ago. In people years that's like, what, 70 years old?
If people are like me they may keep it until it breaks in which case they are not going to list it anywhere but take it to recycling. If you're not into cosseting old equipment and being patient with foibles like me then you've probably bought a 23" replacement 5 years ago and sold the thing back then.
I also think the early generation LCD was more likely to fail (new technology). Fewer survivors these days.
A specialized cable for an officially obsolete monitor isn't an in-demand item. I can't think how a monitor cable could really fail unless your cat chews through it or you are constantly moving the monitor 30 times a day. In other words, even 6 years ago I doubt you could walk into an Apple store and find a whole shelf of the things.
You could try an Apple repair place. I contacted one recently about a replacement fan for my G4. I think they quoted me about $70 - if they could still find one. I went to a local used computer store and got one for $10. In other words, you could try Apple and probably find it would cost an arm and a leg for a part for a monitor most people would find cramped by modern standards.
    There's a few computer stores like [http://www.quecomputers.com>
I side with Grant. There's probably a reason why the cable was cut off.
I own a 29 year old Toyota Corolla. You can't find anything for it these days that is other than a regular replacement that fits many model cars like an oil filter or fan belt. I think the last time I replaced an alternator I got the last one in stock in the state and that was after calling around 3 big parts distributor companies. For other parts I have no option except junkyards, except even there they do not keep cars that old. The last time I needed a bumper I had to get one shipped from Texas and it was only one of two in the country I found online (the other was in California).

  • 21" Studio Display with Windows

OK, I had this running once with Win 2000, but I don't know why my studio display is not recognised as an Studio Display in Windows XP.It only goes up to 85HZ as Plug&Play Monitor. I know this is an Appple Forum, but I need to get the 100HZ-Setting for this Monitor. Someone knows which Sony Driver might work for this? It is a 21" Monitor blue white.

    Yes.

  • Setting up a Studio display on a G4

i would like to set up a 17" Apple Studio monitor with my G4 AGP (1 gig RAM) and an ATI Rage 128 pro ADC card. i have heard great things about these monitors. is there anything i need to know/have prepared/downloaded to make this combo work, or is everything i need already in my OS 10.4.11? any opinions/thoughts on this set?

odd thing, i plugged in the card, hooked everything up, using my VGA monitor instead of the ADC Studio display. when i started up the machine, the screen of my monitor was all Blues and greens.......no reds at all. is the card at fault, or did i not install right? its not the monitor, as it works just fine on other machines and this one with my old video card put back in. i would like to use my studio monitor, and put my VGA back on the machine i had it on before. do i need to get another card?

  • Dual ADC Apple Studio Displays (clear acrylic) with Mac Mini

I currently have the old school Apple Studio Display ADC monitor hooked up to my Mac Mini using the ADC to DVI adapter. I have a second Studio ADC Display and another ADC to DVI adapter to run Dual Displays. I just bought a SEE 2 XTREME DVI to USB which is used for adding multiple monitors. I have it all hooked up. Its just basic plug and play after installing the Mac driver. My second monitor power light just flashes and wont turn on...Any suggestions? I already made sure both monitors and both ADC to DVI adapters worked, and they do. Please Help!! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

yea, I checked that out about the light flashes. I have tried both monitors seperately and they both work fine...just not with this DVI to USB dual monitor adapter. Also, when I had them hooked up individually, I made sure the resolution was set the same in the system preferences > displays.
