Blue lego question marks in Apple Mail

After upgrading to SL, all attachment icons in Mail show up as blue lego bricks with question marks. The files can be saved and opened from the downloads folder -- quicklook also works -- so the attachments are in tact -- just no icons. It is interesting that this affects only one of the users on this machine -- mail for the other user functions normally.

Problem solved. Will document here for anyone else who runs into this issue:
So I recently visited a website with a java applet and got the error "Java unavailable or not installed" along with a *blue lego brick with a question mark*. But I was not getting this message for other users on the same machine. So I checked the Java prefs and noticed that only Java SE 6 32-bit was checked (not sure how this could be, but I have mucked around with my Java prefs in the past...). Clicked "Restore Defaults" which checked off both 64 and 32 bit versions and restarted my browser. This solved the "Java Unavailable" problem *and also solved the mail attachment problem reported above.* So I guess somewhere under the hood in Mail, there is a Java dependancy.

What can I do if there is a question mark over the mail icon in dock... I can't open the Mail now. Thanks!

you can reinstall Mail using the leopard install DVD. insert the DVD and open it in finder. among other things you should see a folder called "optional installs". Open it and double-click on Optional Installs.mpkg. Follow the instructions. at the appropriate page you'll have to check the box for "Mail" on the list of software you want to install.
This will install Mail 3.0. To update it to the latest version of mail reinstall

  • Flashing Question Mark & Sad Apple Logo

I had my Mac for quite some time and everything seem to be going well until yesterday, when I pressed the power key all it showed was a white screen and the apple logo, I had called Tech and they said i was out of warrenty, but informed me that it would best to load the Mac OS X cd when I loaded and reached the select a destination part I saw my hard drive with an explanation point. she stated this was bad and that i would need to compeltely whipe the hard drive which didnt bother me. I went to Disk Utilities and chose my hards drive clicked options and choose to zero all data, also clicked download OS 9 drives. After waiting for about an hr it was completed, and i gave it a volume and went on with the installation i choose the volume and all seemed well. yet, after the computer rebooted and all i saw was a Flashing Question Mark & Sad Apple Logo. not quite sure what this means but checked other threads and followed some of the advised given to repair this, yet for me it doesn't work, as of now i tried erasing all data again but now it seems i can't set a volume. Not 100% percent sure which OS cd i have i will double check and reply later, I have a powerbook G4. any help would be great.
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Richard,
I was hoping you'd respond Thanks to the link to S.M.A.R.T reporter, but things have deteriorated since my last post and now it won't boot up at all.
I hit the power button, hear the start-up chime, then nothing but eerie silence and a gray screen.
The lack of noise usually created by a HD spinning up should be obvious that this is indeed a hard drive issue, but I want to make sure I can sound intelligent when throw myself at the guy who replaced the drive.
I tried booting from a 10.3 install cd (holding down 'c' at startup) to run Disc Utility but it won't even do that. I can hear the cd-rom spinning, reading the disc, but after a while it just gives up. In fact, I think if I listen hard enough, I can hear the faintest sound of mocking laughter....
Is this painfully, obviously, a hard drive gone bad?
It's not the end of the world, just very aggravating.

  • What are these blue box question marks?

What are these blue box question marks appearing on some websites?
They seem to not appear on every website I visit, only some.
I have tried several troubleshooting steps.
    -I reset cache.
    -I changed text encoding.
-I checked bos to always display images.
-I went to "develop" and opened in every other browser.
-I updated my adobe flash player.
    What else can I do?
    It is so annoying!
    I am running Safari 8.0.
    Thank you!

I suggest you get 9.2.  You need to install the same or later version of the OS.  One some computer the shipped version has extra drivers.  The drivers will not be in the official release in this case 9.1.  They would be in 9.2.

Try holding down the option key then power on.  This brings up the startup manager.  Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.

"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."

  • Embedded images replaced with blue square/question mark

    Guys,
Am new to Macs so it's probably user error however, I regularly receive mails with embedding images in them. On my PC I had they came in fine however on my new Mac all the images get stripped out of the e-mail and saved as attachments. This means all the image place holders in the mail show as small blue squares with a white question mark in them and doing quick look on the attachments shows the correct images!
Is there a config setting that stops mail stripping the images off as attachments when they're "in" an e-mail??
Hope someone can help as this is bugging me now!!
    Thanks,
    Mark

Don't know if this suggestion will help but..........
I experienced problems with attaching images to outgoing mail. When I did this with my new iMac (OSX 10.4.11) the attached files were replaced with a blue square containing a question mark.
I browsed various forums and found quite a few references to the same problem and I tried all the various 'fixes' to no avail.
Earlier today I called Apple's tech support and spoke with Mujahid. He went through the problem, established that it was 'system wide' on my iMac and then he suggested that I trash Mail (v2.1.2) and re-install Mail (only Mail) from the disks that came with my Mac. I followed his instructions and after a shut down/restart cycle, Mail now functions correctly. When I attach an image file to an outgoing email, the file no longer appears as a blue square with ? mark but as the original image.
I wonder if the same sort of fix might resolve the problems with Safari?
    Thanks to Mujahid.
    Regards.

  • Nothing fixes "missing plugin" or missing pics (replaced with blue square/question mark). I've tried all the suggestions!

I have been looking months for a solution to the "missing plugin" and missing attachments (replaced by blue square and question mark). Yes, I have "display remote images" checked. Yes, I have clicked on "default" for Java preferences. There is only one set of preferences and one "Default" button in my Java Pref folder. I have downloaded and reinstalled Java, which didn't change anything. I have deleted Apple.Mail.plist. This didn't fix it. I have repaired disk permissions. This didn't fix it either. I have tried everything but reinstalling Mail. Can anyone provide a permanent fix for this problem?
Also, Mail keeps asking for my passwords for all accounts!
This is my second iMac (27" i5) and it has not been a good experience - very strange behavior. HD is very noisy, won't stay asleep, can't wake up when it is asleep - have to restart and magic mouse won't stay connected.

  • Blue Boxed Question Marks In Safari...HELP

    Hey Guys,
Just messing around with iWeb and created a quick site at:
    http://web.mac.com/tjmerwanji
I've noticed these blue boxes with a question mark in them in numerous areas, in place of some pictures or sometimes just randomly
Looked through the forums about text encoding and it didn't work or I'm doing it wrong
Just published normally to .Mac using iWeb,
    Really need help!
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I'm using the black template (i think), and I tried to add the "Add Comment" function. The i republished, and now i get is the '@post" where "add comment" should be....
Also on my blog entry page all the link functions ie. a link, Email Me, Read More, Add Comment...all appear as blue square with questions marks. But if you click on the blue squares the links do work and it takes you through to the page you want. All images etc are still there, it's just the links that have the questions marks.

If anyone has any suggestions other than just sitting it out and see if Mac sort it, it'd be great to hear.

  • ???????  / unessary question marks in e-mail

    Good morning:
When I forward e-mails to a PC the people mget several ??? in the copy of the e-mail. Any explanation?

    Dear Manfred,
    Good Morning.
You do know that this forum is run by Apple for users to discuss issues between themselves don't you? It does say when you log on.
"Our discussion forums are filled with thousands of Macintosh and iPod users from around the world. Search for an answer, post your question, or answer other users' questions in the Apple Discussions community. If you need help using Discussions, check out the Help & Terms of Use link in the sidebar to the right. "
The reason I say this is because the tone of your post sounds rather like you are demanding an answer from Apple. Users of this forum are not Apple, they are customers.
As for your problem, absolutely no idea. It doesn't happen to me. It could be your PC friends' server settings perhaps. Your problem has many possible variables and without more information it's difficult to hazard a guess.
This would seem to be a problem with either your own or your friend's email service or settings rather than a problem with your powerbook. Does this issue also happen when forwarding to other macs? If so, are they using the same email services?
One last test would be to see if it happens consistently to all pc users or only to particuloar ones, also before forwarding the message.
Email services often handle formatted text in different ways so strange looking additions like ** or ??? are quite common. Try sending mail as plain unformatted text and see if that helps.
Sorry I can't be of further assistance at this stage. Good luck.

  • Blue boxed question marks on photos after publishing?

All of my photos have white question marks in blue boxes when I publish my site to my FTP server. I've read where this is caused by pictures not being linked properly, but I have re-linked and have left the location of the photo file unchanged, to no avail. I've contacted Yahoo (my provider), also to no avail. I have not fully published my site to my domain yet due to this, but this is the URL of my temp domain:
    http://nashvilleleader.com.p8.hostingprod.com/Nashville_Leader/Home.html
Any help would be greatly appreciate. Thanks!

The files haven't been uploaded. Take a look at the Activity for your home page, Option-Command-A, to see the URLs of the missing files.
Look HERE to see the directory and note that the files aren't there.
How are you uploading the files - iWeb FTP, an FTP app or Yahoo file manager?
Good luck with getting help from Yahoo - their tech support is the bottom of the barrel.

  • Folder with Question Mark, to Apple Icon, to Kernel Screen at Startup.

At startup Folder with Question Mark, Followed all steps to resolve it to no avail, I try to re-install Snow Leopard and Apple Icon with Grey screen appears, then Kernel screen.
I cannot get past the Kernel screen.  No options to click anything, like system preferences or anything. I have a Macbook, with Snow Leopard.  Any help would be much appreciated.
I tried Pram Reset and everything.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply Mende.
I tried that, it goes to the apple icon, however after about 10 seconds of the apple it goes straight to the Kernel screen.  It doesn't give me the options of opening anything. Infact it doesn't even have a mouse curser.
If I hold "option" it gives me the option of choosing only the "Leopard DVD" but that's it and then it goes to the Kernel Screen
Again, thanks for the taking the time to help me out.

  • Macbook Startup? ***! I get Question Mark before Apple logo then log in.

Recently whenever I turn on my macbook, it takes more time to load up, first it load a Question Mark then the Apple Logo and lastly log in? What is the Question Mark thing in the start up?

  • Flashing Question Mark Folder/Apple Logo/Circle w/ line through it

I was restarting my Macbook and got the flashing sequence of a Folder w/ Question Mark in it, the Apple Logo, and the Circle w/ diagonal line though it.
I have disconnected all my peripherals
I have tried starting up holding shift = does the same thing
I have tried starting holding Alt = it shows my Mac HD and an arrow under it to allow you to select it. I select it and it does the same thing.
I have my wife's Macbook here also with Snow Leopard on it. We have just moved, and I do not have my household goods yet, which is where my original startup disks are located.
Is there a way I can put the startup files I need onto an external from my wife's and try to start up from there?
Any help would be appreciated. All my important files I have backed up, so data loss isn't a huge concern, but there is plenty of software and personal settings on everything I would like to retain.

a quick google search for "create bootable OS X CD"
    yielded these:

No experience with the products, so cannot say how well they work...

  • TS1440 Flashing question mark, cancel, apple, and folder symbol.

My computer has been acting weird for the longest time, I used to have a done of room on it and one day it disappeared. So I started deleting stuff off of it, big apps and what not so I could have more space, I would gain little bit of space but then a second later it goes back to "Zero KG" so I'm thinking I should restart my computer.. So I turn it off, then turn it on, and flashing symbols come up. After multiple times of turning it on and off, I put in my startup disk, but I can't get past the choosing the start up disk because it says I have zero KG on the disk.. So I take the disc out and it goes back to the flashing question mark/apple/folder symbol..

    Hello,
Try holding the Option key at startup to see if you can boot off the Install Disc to repair the drive, or the c key.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
We need to clear some really big files off of it, like Movies, or I suspect some huge logs from something going wrong. 0 KB on the drive can ruin many files on there.
