Blue Ray Writer for iMac

I need a Blue Ray writer for my new iMac.
I’ve not used a Blue Ray writer before and I’m not sure if the write - read rates justify going to the expense of a USB3 device?
I would appreciate any words of wisdom

The short answer is... Yes.

I am looking into getting a blu-ray writer (external) for my Mac Pro to burn HD video clips from my camcorder on to DVD.
Does FCE4 & iDVD support blu-ray at present?
    Many thanks

Is there any software that simply allows me to use my Imac (the last generation model with the optical drive) as the "screen" for my portable Blu-Ray player.  I have the Firewire adaptor and the HDMI cable already.

  • Looking for a good Blue Ray Burner for Imac

Hi. I wonder if this idea is possible. I'm working with my Canon XL1 in parties, Events, etc and editing in my Imac 24 inch with Final Cut Express Pro. I wonder if it's possible to finish projects in 100 minutes length from XL1 with 20 to 25 GB each clip, export in 1280x720 (or better) to get HD, and Burn in BLue RAY with very clear results to show in a 52 inch plasma T.V HD 1080. If this is possible (or look alike HD) I wonder which Blue Ray burner will you recommend me for the task.
    Thanks for your answers.
    Best Regards.

Hi Skalicki. The reason why i asked that, it's because I made some test and what I saw in a 50 HD TV was very confusing. I made a party, I used 7 cassettes and in the final file that was 24 GB I made quicktime Movie, and of course with such a huge file, I burned that in IDVD with a 4.2 GB dvd. In a little T.V is awesome, in a 52 inch HD is awful. Another test, with Xl1, a short 10 minutes clip, burned in IDVD in h264 with 1280x720 HD is very good in the same T.V. What I understand for the test is: If a big clip (90' or more) remains uncompressed and it's burned in HD (mean BLUE RAY for a 90 minutes file), the properties remains intact and the XL1 becomes a look alike HD. The truth is: I wonder if this reasoning is right or not, but until now it's all what I understand.
    Thanks again for your help.

I’m going to get the I Mac and since the new I Mac doesn’t have DVD drive on it I was thinking to get the Samsung SE-506AB Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer in order to burn movies from I movie do I need a special software for that since the SE-506ab comes only with windows software.. but I did check and it is compatible with apple. Can you please advise me and or let me know if I’m buying the right stuff or if there is any other blu ray that will work with the I mac as plug and play.
    Thank you

This freezing reminds me of really old Macs, long ago, in the days of the old-school peripherals like SCSI drives, terminators, scanners and the like. If you had a SCSI conflict, like the wrong device ID's or something, you'd freeze up like that. Back in those days you'd call 800-SOS-APPLE (AAPL?) and they'd run you through disconnecting all your extra hardware - Jaz and Zip drives, CD burners, scanners etc and then eliminate them one by one by adding them incrementally and testing for the freeze/bomb dialog.
But, today we have Firewire and none of those ancient issues (no free lifetime tech support either). My iMac's ports are all full, and I only know which devices are connected when I have to remove something for another device. iSight, scanner, card reader, external hard drive, USB soundsticks, etc. You wouldn't happen to have any SCSI devices hooked up, would you?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different USB/Firewire port for the hard drive? Or run the hardware test DVD that comes with your computer? This weird freezing seems to suggest a problem with the computer, RAM or network more than a device. Bad devices, in my experience, cause kernel panics, not freezing.

  • Using LG Super Multi Blue BE14 Blu-Ray Writer on Mavericks OS

I have read online reports of persons successfully using an LG Super Multi Blue BE14 Blu-Ray writer on an iMac with recent OS X, even though LG advertises support only for Windows OS. They said it recognized the unit automatically when pluged into the USB port
It did not work for me. Perhaps my USB is too slow, since the default for the burner is USB 3.0. Any truth to Mavericks not supporting external DVD players/burners?

Interesting because it says that model is only compatible with
    Windows 8
    Windows 7
    Windows Vista

  • HP Pavilion Elite HPE-480t computer and an HP bd 340i 12x blu-ray writer

I purchased HP 12x Blu-Ray writer model bd340i in the middle of last year. When I purchased my desk top from HP in December of 2010 model HP Pavilion Elite HPE-480t I installed the burner and every thing was working fine. Today I tried to burn a blu-ray disc and it came back with can not read media, that was on imgBurn. So I tried the same on the systems burner and it came back as no disc in tray. I also tried CyberLink burning software and the same thing no disc.
I then tried to play both store bought and home made blu-ray disc and it could not read the media. I was ready to blame it on a bad burner but I then tried a regular DVD both store bought and home made and it played fine. I then tried to burn a dvd single and dual-layer with all three burning softwares I have and again it was fine, no problems. Its just the blu-ray media that can not be read or writen. The only blu-ray media I used from day one has been Kodak and never had a problem. Thats what baffles me.
I at this point dont know if its a hardware or software problem with the computer or blu-ray burner or both. 3 different burning programs works fine on DVD's but not blu-ray, Plays DVD's fine but can not play or burn blu-ray discs.
Could it be the blu-ray laser crapped out and the dvd reading and writing laser is still working ?  Does a blu ray burner even have to lasers for the two medias [DVD and Blu Ray]???
Everything else with the computer works fine. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling and its the same, I tried to update the drivers and firmware on your site and still did not work. Please some help.

    Arcticwolf, welcome to the forum.
Let's try another burner to see if that helps solve your problem.  I have used CDBurnerXP for years.  It has burned CD/DVD's when no other burner would work.
Please let us know if this solves your problem or not.

  • Playback of Blu-Rays on your iMac

I've been looking into buying an iMac, and so I looked into everything. On the webpage for the graphics card, it said the graphics card was capable of reading blu-rays. However these is no mention of this on the Apple website.
I was wondering if it was possible to play blu-rays on your iMac.

  • Blu ray software for mac

I just installed my new internal LG Blu-Ray drive in my mac pro. Now the DVD studio pro doesn't recodnise my old DVD drive. I know the DVD studio pro is not designed for Blu-Ray so now I am looking for an ulternate for this software where I can make menu and chepters and it works with final cut pro and compresser. I have received a software cd with this drive, but that is for Windows. Where I can find LG Blu-Ray software for mac?
    Please help me.

You mentioned that DVD Studio Pro does no recognize your old DVD drive.
When you format your project, look at the bottom of the Format window under the Destination section.  The "Output Device" pop-up menu lets you choose between any device that DVD Studio Pro can write to.  Both your internal burner and LG burner should show up.
Of course, this is all for NTSC DVD.
If you're going to go with Adobe Encore, be sure to use CS6 (the current version).  Prior versions were problematic when it came to BD menus.

  • Blue-ray reader for lenovo x61s

Hi i am new to the lenovo forum i am looking if someone can help me my question is can i get a blue ray reader or blue ray burner for my lenovo x61s and if so can someone direct me to the correct one that would fit my model Thanks......
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Blu-ray playback, if that's what your're interested in, probably won't be that great in the X61.  The X61s low voltage CPU probably doesn't have enough processing power for smooth playback.  The graphics card on the X61s unlike newer integrated GPUs cannot help with the decoding.  It's all left to the CPU, which struggles cause it's getting no help from the GPU.
