Blue screen - after booting into Darwin/BSD

Hi,
after I had the problem of my iMac G5 only booting into Darwin/BSD (which I posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1093517&tstart=0), I followed the instructions for recreating the user accounts, as described here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663&start=0&tstart=0
Now I'm able to get to the blue screen, and the system doesn't exit into Darwin/BSD any longer. However, the Setup Assistant doesn't start either.
I only see an empty blue screen (I guess it's the GUI base screen) and the menu bar. The menu bar only has to items: one menu 'loginwindow', which doesn't have any entries. And the Apple-logo menu, which has the following menu entries:
- About This Mac
- Software Update...
- Mac OS X Software...
- System Preferences...
- Dock >
- Location >
- Force Quit...
- Sleep
- Restart...
- Shot Down...
- Log Out System Administrator...
The 'Restart...' entry doesn't work. I can, however, launch the System Preferences window.
Tail command of /var/log/System.log shows:
configd[41]: WirelessConfigure: 88001003
kernel[0]: Registering For 802.11 Events
kerner[0]: [HCIController][setupHardware] AFH Is Supported

loginwindow[141]: [Login.m:1867] Failed to launch /Applications/Server/Server Assistant.app/Contents/MacOS/Server Assistant (error -1)

Any recommendations on what to do next?
Thanks!
Torsten

Apologies, was a little vague. and as far as my profile goes i have loads of mac's here in the studio.
using MBP latest model, Snow Leopard with latest updates.
1. boot up in windows XP SP3 (bootcamp NTFS formatted 32GB partition) - all ok
2. shut down windows and re boot in OSX
3. boots up but fails to complete and hangs on blue screen (just prior to desk top picture loading)
4. press and hold power button to shut down
5. reboot in OSX - boots up fine this time

  • Michael C stopped my MacBook booting into Darwin/BSD, but it is now sloooow

I am testing a MacBook 2.16 GHz for possible use at work. Upgraded to 3GB RAM and Hitachi 200GB HD. Performance was great after a week, but one day I got a dark screen at bootup with the Darwin/BSD-login-password message that a lot of people seem to get. I followed Michael Conniff's advice (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4550428) and got the system to boot into the GUI properly. But ever since then performance has been very slow: e.g. selecting the Date and Time takes 5 seconds to launch and clicking on the AirPort icon takes the same amount of time to produce the drop-down menu. It's like the MacBook is running in slow-motion. The exception is the Dock: it pops up quickly and the Apps scroll by quickly. Launching the Apps is another matter, though.
NO OTHER APPS INSTALLED. Really. No MS programs or even freeware. Just iLife '08. All the current updates have been installed. Zapped the PRAM, ran Disk Utility to check the disk and verify permissions--even booted into single-user mode and ran fsck (disk was okay). Tonight I reinstalled the OS in a clean install, installed all the updates, and afterwards the MacBook is just as slow. What is going on? If it's this slow, I guess I won't be using Parallels anytime soon to replace my Dell!

Well, this has been frustrating. The original hard disk also will occasionally boot into Darwin and menu selection is still very sluggish. The local Apple Store won't touch an Apple recertified MacBook--even one that was just delivered a couple of days ago from the Apple Store Online. I then spent several hours on the phone, mostly on hold, but sometimes transferred in a closed loop from Customer Support to Tech Support and back to Customer Support. Sadly, the case number I was given by a rep (the third one I spoke to) isn't showing up as valid either. At this point I just want to return the MacBook (which I think I still can), but I can't reach anyone to arrange for this!

  • Screen boots into Darwin/BSD

I restarted my computer one day and it booted into a Black screen (Darwin/BSD).
I've tried the suggestions on various forums below:
    http://missionitgroup.com/blog/?p=1490
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663
But I am still unable to get my computer to boot normally.
Every time I reboot, it either just goes to a blue screen, or the Welcome movie plays and can't get past a certain point.
Can anybody help with any further suggestions?
    Thanks!

    tsk80:
The 2 options they gave me was to:
    -archive and reinstall everything
    -erase everything and reinstall everything
There is a third option, which I believe is an option that will serve you better longer term. That option is to install a new larger capacity drive. This will
    • Give you greater storage capacity
    • Give you a faster HDD
    • Improve your computer's performance because of higher rotational speed, and greater areal density provided by a larger capacity drive allowing your computer to access larger blocks of data on each rotation.
    • Allow you more free space which will boost performance with more room for swap files and sufficient room for growing the directory and avoiding overlapping volume structures. You should maintain a minimum of 15% of available capacity of your HDD as contiguous free space for the benefit of the directory.
When you have installed your new HDD you will need to format it before you can install to it. I would put a fresh installation instead of reinstalling a corrupted directory. If you think there is merit in this suggestion we can offer step by step directions for each stage of the adventure.
Let me know what you think.

  • PowerMac G4 MDD booting into DARWIN/BSD screen.

    Hi,
I've been sitting here for the past three days trying to figure out how to fix this problem. My computer keeps booting into the darwin/bsd screen and will not boot into the operating system. Apparently the kernel has a problem. I have tried everything including the "/sbin/fsck -yf" thing. None of it seems to work at all. It just brings me back to this "darwin/bsd screen.
I just found my installation dvd and put it in. Then I held the OPTION+D keys which brought me to the boot drive screen. This screen shows the Main HD symbol and the Mac OS X INSTALL CD icons. But, I am unable to switch over to the Install disc icon to run it. My mouse just doesn't respond at all on this screen, but somehow the keyboard does.
Can someone tell me whats going on???

"OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
    /sbin/fsck -fy Enter
    Repeat until no errors.
    /sbin/mount -uaw Enter
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone Enter
    1. The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    2. Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot Enter
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

  • My i5 27-inch screen will show only a white or blue screen after boot up.

In every case, for every volume, even the Recovery Volume.  Did the video card go belly-up?  I have had it for 13 months and no, I didn't sign up for Apple Care.  I always do, now.

Try booting into safe mode. Try running the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests at least twice and then try running Rember.

  • Blue Screen after booting on Satellite A60

    Hi,
i hope someone can help me on this: I have not changed anything on my A60 but suddenly i get a bluescreen saying that there is a problem with the atidvag.dll (?).
I can only start the computer in asaved mode now. through google i found some other users who had the same problem and that a new bios version might help. when i try to install the newest bios version from the toshiba website it gives me a message that a it failed to load the driver ...
thanks to anyone helping me with this, because i do not know what to do at all.
    br,
    bernhard

As far as I can remember the atidvag.dll file is a part of the graphic driver.
So everything seems like a graphic driver or graphic card would malfunction.
The best way to find out what could be wrong is a usage of the Toshiba recovery CD!
But if it is not possible to install the OS from the recovery CD then you should contact the ASP in your country.
Maybe the graphic chip is dead

  • My Macbook will not boot the operating system.  It just goes to a blue screen after the apple logo and the spinning wheel goes off.  I took the battery out and held the on/off button for five seconds and reset the PRAM.  I have the old mac os disk.

My macbook will not boot.  It goes to a blue screen after the logo and wheel goes off.  I have taken the battery out and held the on/off button for five seconds and reset the PRAM.  I have the the original os disk but have not put it in for fear of losing un backed op data.

You won't lose any data unless you erase your hard drive.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c"key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it.When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've selected the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.

  • Gray screen after boot and blue screen with stripes

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2011 with Mavericks (came with Snow Leopard).
    History:
One day i was working and things were too slow. I tried to restart but it was taking too long to close all the programs. So I forced shut down by holding the power button. When I turned it on again, my problems begin.
    Problem:
The Apple logo and the spinning wheel appear. After a while, both disappear and it freezes at gray screen. Some solutions I tried make the screen goes blue with black vertical stripes. In both cases, I have to force shut down.
    Solutions I tried:
    - Reset NVRAM
It does reset, but nothing change
    - Log in my Windows partition. I can't log
    - Hold option key and choose recovery. Blue screen
    - Recovery system by restart and press Command-R. Blue Screen.
    - Safe boot by pressing Shift. Blue Screen
    - Verbose by pressing Command-V. Restart and gray screen again.
    - Single-user mode by pressing Command-S
         Tried to reapair hard drive:
              /sbin/fsck –fy
Returns the message "** The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.". I restart and nothing change.
         Tried to change startup permissions:
              mount -uw /
              chown root /
              chmod 1775 /
              exit
         Restart and nothing change.
    - Boot from a bootable USB flash drive
Holding option key, I choose my flash drive with Ubuntu installed. It gives me 3 options: Use Ubuntu without installing, Install Ubuntu, Repair Disk      Errors (something like that). The 3 options go to the blue screen
Flash drive with Mavericks. Blue screen.
-Boot from my Snow Leopard CD. Gray screen, restarting, gray screen.
I don't what else I can do. Is it a hardware problem? At first I thought it was some corrupted file. But is it a GPU or logic board problem? What else can I try?

I found this to work at least to get in and backup some files. It is VERY important to put these commands in EXACTLY as seen here, including spaces.
Boot into Single-User mode (Command-S while booting up)
    Execute the following commands:
    /sbin/fsck -fy /
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .
    touch /System/Library/Extensions
    exit
I guess these two graphics extensions go bad quite often on Macbook Pro 15-inch.  They are part of the logic board. The only problem I had was I still couldn't get into my computer any other way, and the graphics for Safari were messed up.  Firefox was okay.  Good Luck!

  • IBook boots into Darwin log-in screen

I've been having some problems with my iBook G5 not booting, or taking ages to do so...
It now boots into what looks like a UNIX screen. The screen says something about Darwin/BSD and asks for my ID and password.
I type in my iBook'a Admin ID/password but it won't accept it.
Has anyone encounted this problem and perhaps know what I need to do to fix this puppy?
The iBook is out of warranty, so I want to try a few things first before having to pay to get it fixed.
    Thanks!

Hi. Do you have the install disk that came with your Macbook? You could do or try booting to single user. This is a way to check and repair your operating system,if you have no install disk to use.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

Ok so i got this laptop in a few days ago here are the problems and the things i have tried. This laptop when it came to me did not have a hard drive, so obviously no OS. Upon installing a hard drive then trying to load Yosemite from a USB stick, I turn mac on, sleep light will blink 5 times then boot, Will come to normal gray screen then apple logo, will then load the OS install, but go straight to a blue screen with vertical lines. Tried different hard drive, tried different RAM sizes and speeds, tried different OS, tried CD instead. Have done numerous PRAM and SMC resets. trying Safe mode gets me a panic cpu 4 caller error then restarts. I have tried using a hard drive that had an OS already installed and will go straight to blue screen after loading. I have tried fsck -fy in single user mode. I do get that disk2s3 is write protected in single user mode, but im pretty sure that its the OS disk. I do not see a second hard drive in single user mode but i believe that because its not partitioned yet. Any ideas community?

Tried doing OS X lion by CD now, and will only get half way through load bar before the apple logo and loading bar disappears and then it will sit at a gray screen.

  • Booting to Darwin/BSD, Setup Assistant Crashing

Last night I was simultaneosly updating OSX and my iPod using Software Update, when the screen dimmed and turned grey with the message stating that I needed to restart my computer by holding down the power button. Upon doing so the screen turned black instead of booting up normal and went into Darwin/BSD (console). From there i followed the instructions posted to boot in single user mode and read the log. there i was given the message

    iMac 20in 2.1Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    hi there--
i would follow the instructions for a blue screen in this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464. make sure everything is unplugged from your computer. being able to do a safe boot or a boot to the install disk at this time would be extremely valuable. there are things you can do however from single user mode which will sometimes resolve the issue, like renaming the preferences folder or loginwindow.plist. also you might want to try booting to open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and typing the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. if none of these things work, you will probably have to archive and install your operating system. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. it is not an uncommon thing to be done for booting to the darwin bsd screen. keep me posted as to whether or not you are making any progress. • Blue Screen after clean reinstall snow leopard

I have a mid 2011 that came with Snow Leopard and disks.  I upgraded from there to Lion - then whatever came next and to Mavericks and finally Yosemite, which was a nightmare for me. I did not use disks of any of the rest.  So I just decided to take my disks and go back to Snow Leopard.  I did this and it asked to go to disk utility and repair both the HD and Permissions.  It came out ok, but there was an instance where looking at the list in HD repair, I saw Suid File System Library Core was moved and cannot be repaired. I went ahead and erased the Hard Drive. Then closed out and installed Snow Leopard. I'm not sure I did it right because I had to rename the new start up disk and typed in unnamed 1.
after that I was able to start up to Snow Leopard. It worked fine until I tried to download all the updates. Then it didn't seem to restart, but just went to the sign in screen.  So I had to keep shutting down and turning it back on. No updates. One of times I started up, I got the blue screen after the apple and gray screen.
Also on start up the apple comes up without the chime. Last night I got some instructions from a similar situation and tried to use my disk to a clean reinstall all over.  It didn't work, still the blue screen. (it does fine in safemode.)
I need help to get this mac running.  If someone can help me......

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.
