Blue screen but booting with safe mode

hi,
my macbook screen suddenly went blu color. when i reboot it, i got the same blue color screen after the apple logo.
but when i boot under safe mode, it boot perfectly. i have run disk fix and all other minor fix they run successfully but still the problem did not solved.
my macbook is 2.2GH, core 2 Duo white color, 2GB Ram 667MHz.
some body told me the logic board is damaged, but why it is booting undersafe mode. i want to make sure what is the trouble to replace it with reasonable price.

What version of Mac OS X are you using?  Did you have a Windows partition on your Macbook.  If you don't have a Windows partition then you may have a bad extension(s).  Start in safe mode again then launch the Console app in the Utilities fold, take a look a the system log for any errors.

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

  • Blank blue screen on boot unless safe mode

My 12" powerbook will not boot up. After the grey screen with the logo, it goes to a blank blue screen and stops there. The disk is fine, i can start the powerbook in target mode and boot other computers off it. It also has a fresh install on in so i know it's not any 3rd party stuff. I have tried all the standard troubleshooting stuff (reset NVRAM & PMU, ran disk utility and disk warrior). Does anyone know exactly what is turned off in safe mode? It is something that is with the standard os install that doesn't get loaded in safe mode that is causing the crashes.

    Hi slee,
In addition to cornelius's questions, please also respond to these.
What version of OS X did you reinstall?
In your computer specs, you only list Mac OS X (10.4.10). Is that what you installed? If so, did you happen to use the system discs that shipped with your MBP? That might explain the source of the problem.
In your Other Topic, you wrote
"I have tried 2 different dvds. both booted fine and allowed me to install the os onto the hd,..."
What type of install DVDs were each of those?
Did you do an Erase & Install each time?
Do you have any Previous Systems, still present?
After the Kernel Panic, when you reinstalled, did you first disconnect all peripherals?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?

  • 'Famous' blue screen at startup AND safe mode boot failure

    Dear all,
Two days ago, after installing the new Java update/airport update and restarting, I encountered a 'blue screen' on startup after getting past the mac symbol and swirling cog. I cannot say whether the updates were the cause (doubtful) of if my cheap USB mouse that was still plugged it caused it or whether i have the dreaded 'bad sectors.' The cause aside, here is what i've tried to fix the issue:
    1) Disk Utility - Verification (OK'd) and Repairs (fine)
    2) Disk Utility - Verification of Permissions (a few needed to be done) All repaired
    -blue screen-
    -Restart after period-
    3) Rebooting in safe mode, removing startup items from the login items settings menu
    4) Removing startup items from System/Library/StartupItems folders
    5) Remove airport extensions (recent - date modified in list view)
(NB - safe mode i could say my desktop perfectl in original form and all files!)
    -Restart-
-no longer able to start in safe mode-
    -blue screen remains-
    6)Single User mode -
resetting preference files (loginwindow.plist and windowserver.plist)
Finally system profiler from Tiger DVD states:
    *Permissions repaired
*Dependency errors: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily & com.apple.kernel.iokit no valid version found
    *Integrity: kext has no receipt
I backed up most my data from the LAST crash, but recent music/1000 photos and others have been backed up altho i've been meaning to! Help!
I'M PANICKING now can no longer get in SAFE MODE!!
    Please help Mac911!!!!

    Update:
So, I managed to do ALL that you said, EXCEPT, the reboot and work fine business.
I created the admin account which works fine. So now I can see three user accounts (looks like there as already an admin type one).
The one I created works fine, only, I can only access/see the login screen through a safe boot, (otherwise blue screens...) . I can get into the admin account fine, but when restarting and logging in as my original user account it won't boot. Something is very wrong in MY user account. I think at this point my data there is still retrievable somehow for a backup, clean start. but i haven't reached that point yet.
Anyone have any clues what migt have caused the error in my user login?
One of the things I tried (too hastily now i admit) first was to remove the recently added updates from the extensions folder. has this exacerbated the problem? Can i put them back without logging in as me??
remember from my first post system profiler says software/extensions integrity 'kext has no receipt' and dependency errors: 'com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily and com.apple.kernel.iokit; no valid version found' - whereas in my newly created admin account it appears AOK.
    is this the source?
    any ideas anyone?
sorry lots of queries here but i am ever hopeful.....
    All yours,
    Charlie

  • Blue screen at start up,safe mode only, resolved ,what next?

I got the old stuck on blue screen at start up ,
would only boot in safe mode , after two afternoons of RAM test , repairing disk permissions , hrdware tests , zapping PRam and the likes to no avail , I finally resolved the problem thanks to a tip from this forum:
bad video card drivers ( ATIRadeon 8500 ) , after removing them from the extension folder , it boots up! ( I tried to reset the pram , it won't work though , one chime only then nothing).
so I'm wondering what's next , can i reinstall the video card drivers only ?
is it the card itself ? (everything looks normal) or should I go for an archive and install ?
    any input would be great,
    Thanks,
    JB

    Hi-
Jean Baptiste mentioned that he removed extensions for the drivers.
Removing a conflicting driver is fine as long as the driver specific for the card installed remains.
In this case, I think it may have been a corrupt driver, rather than a conflicting driver.
Radeon drivers in OS X have a good track record of compatibility, and such driver conflict is not a historically common occurrence.
Hard drive maintenance with Disk Warrior is the best way to correct corrupt files, unless bad RAM is corrupting the files.....
In your case, it shouldn't hurt anything to remove the Radeon 8500 drivers.
Could it be the driver extensions that are preventing a proper boot. The monitor displays perfectly in safe mode so I don't understand why it would be the video card.
Booting to Safe mode unloads drivers. Only very basic core graphics rendering drivers are loaded.
No Quartz/Quartz Extreme, no Core Image, no 3D acceleration, etc.
This doesn't tax a graphics card.
Failure to boot, or failure of graphics when drivers are loaded are due to one of two things- corrupt drivers or failing components on the graphics card.
A reinstall of the OS can rule out the first.
Installing a different graphics card is the only way to rule out the second.
Before buying a new card, I would try a fresh OS.
Installing a new OS on a separate drive, and booting to that is an easy way to test.

  • Blue Screen of Death - only safe mode fully boots

Here's a question for speculation. My iMac G5 (ALS) will not boot up past the blue screen of death, except in safe mode. I've reset the PRAM, I've attempted Verbose Mode (but don't know what I'm reading there). I've attempted booting from the Leopard Installation Disk and from a firewire external drive with Leopard and Tiger installed on it. All I ever get is the blue screen and spinning beach ball. If can't boot from the optical drive, then I can't do an archive and reinstall. I used Tech Tool Pro Deluxe to do everything except a surface scan of the Hard Drive and everything passed (I couldn't find my apple hardware test disk).
The good news is that my data is backed up and I'm still covered by Applecare. I turned it in to the Genius Bar this morning and they had no idea what to do either (Hopefully they have a Genius Bar of their own). At this point the debate is simply academic. What do you think went wrong?

The drive may have been intact , but the main memory would have been replaced by the new board, so the old info would be gone. Look at [this|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motherboard].
    Hope all continues well,

  • Kernel Panic/"broken folder" icon but boots in safe mode

    I'm totally puzzled.
When I boot the computer either from the HDD or my bootable back-up, i get the broken folder icon.
But i can boot just fine in safe mode from the HDD - in fact, that's how i'm typing this message right now.
I have turned off all login items.
I repaired permissions on disk utility.
What else can i do (short of my genius bar appointment tomorrow morning)?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
I assume restoring from my backup HDD won't work since I can't boot from it?

  • Broken folder icon but boots in safe mode

    I'm totally puzzled.
When I boot the computer either from the HDD or my bootable back-up, i get the broken folder icon.
But i can boot just fine in safe mode from the HDD - in fact, that's how i'm typing this message right now.
I have turned off all login items.
I repaired permissions on disk utility.
What else can i do (short of my genius bar appointment on Monday)?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Do you mean a flashing question mark in a folder?
    DALE

  • I have an ibook g4 that boots to blue screen and hangs. Safe mode will boot but hangs after log in. I have reset PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU. Booted from Diskwarrior and rebuilt and tested the HD, working properly.  Boot from Tiger dvd shows images? no text

The tiger install dvd boots only to show an image of what looks to be two steps, not sure what its showing me.. possibly inserting RAM?  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Could you get a picture of the screen, load that into your working computer,
and post it into a reply here? There are a few kinds of situations where a
similiar display of that sort may appear.
Given the G4 iBook PPC (which model) is a bit dated now, one has to
assume you have the original 'install-restore' DVD it came with, new.
What was or wasn't it doing, before you chose to try to boot Tiger DVD?
Do you have a second Mac, one w/ FireWire ports; maybe Thunderbolt?
It may be possible to further look into the ailing iBook G4 via FireWire
from a second Mac, and attempt to investigate, or save old data to some
external drive, USB Flash; in case you need to totally wipe the HDD.
An image of the iBook screen may be helpful. Someone else with recent
troubleshooting or extensive use of iBook portables (or other OS X issue)
that presents such a screen instead of a normal progress screen, may
have an immediate idea. Without an image, I am not venturing a guess.
What key did you hold down while trying to boot the computer from DVD?
One set of keys can get you a Startup Manager. Among other options.

  • I can not boot past the blue screen, but safe mode is fine...

I have no clue what I did...
Everything was working fine on my iMac (which is from like 2008). I did a file migration transfer from my Macbook pro to the iMac and everything seemed to be good. I could see everything, etc. I went to update the software on the iMac since the computer has not been used in a while. After everything updated and installed the computer restarted and has not been able to move past the blue screen when booting. I can start in safe mode just fine. I have done everything I can find on how to trouble shoot with no luck.
I have reinstalled the OS X
I have held down every combo of keys when restarting the computer
I have made sure the correct disk is highlighted for starting up
I have done everything I could find online...
I do not have the option to erase under the disk utility, or repair?
I am so lost and have no idea what to do. Did the migrate do this? I could use any help! Thank you.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Macbook Pro boots to a blue screen. Only boots in safe mode

Hi, I am a long time reader, first time poster.
OK so I just go a new Macbook Pro 13' from my school (my school made it mandatory to get a mac this year) and I was installing some of my applications. Then I got the "You need to restart your computer" message. I restarted, and all i got was a blue screen with my pointer. Then after a while it says the same restart message. Also I have tried booting from the Snow Leopard Disk, but I get the same message before the actual SL installer comes up. I have been able to get the Macbook to boot in safe mode and I repaired permissions and the disk, however that does not seem to help. I have also reset the PRAM and that did nothing. I am running out of ideas... how can I fix this?!? Help!

You should not be having kernel panics on a new Mac. Kernel panic causes is sometimes hardware related. Your computer is still under warranty since it's new. You can either call Apple tech support or try the suggestions mentioned in User Tips: Kernel Panics and this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392

    (10.6.8 Intel core duo 2009)
    Hi,
I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link, invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length)  and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. J

  • MacBook Pro only boots in safe mode with pink vertical stripes across screen.

So on Friday night I was using Chrome on my MacBook Pro, when all of a sudden little squares of light flashed randomly across the whole screen and everything but the mouse froze. I thought that was weird, so after a few minutes I forced my computer to shutdown. I waited a little and then turned it back on, and opened Chrome again. The same thing happened again, so I forced shut down, backed up Time Machine and ran a virus scan. Nothing came up, so I put it to sleep and and went to bed.  Then Saturday morning I went to open my laptop and it was off, which was weird, so I went to turn it on. After the apple logo and spinning gear went away, it booted to a light blue screen and stayed there. Again I waited and nothing happened, so I held the power button down until it turned off. I tried again but the same thing happened, so I booted in Safe Mode.
This time there were inch long vertical bars of horizontal lines, kind of confusing but here are two pictures I took of the screen that hopefully help. http://imgur.com/oj2WbZL and http://imgur.com/O1hwJ1B . When it finally loaded I had another issue, I had 6 pink vertical bars across the screen and a box of pink horizontal stripes around my pointer, http://imgur.com/BJBzu74 . I performed an extended Apple Hardware Test and after 17 minutes it found no issues, and as it performed the test the lines got whiter and made the screen harder to see http://imgur.com/XahBD3s .
I got my laptop June 2011, so it's not that old. I just want to know what this problem could be. I don't know if it's the connection from the screen to the computer, the hard drive, the logic board or something else. I'm really worried that it's something major, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

This is a GPU problem. It's normal that you see that the problem is random, but the fact that your Mac is only starting up in safe mode indicates that your Mac can only start up if the VGA driver is used. Moreover, if you open Console, you should start seeing "GPU Debug Info Start", which indicates a GPU failure.
As you have a backup, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the GPU is soldered onto the logic board, so the whole logic board has to be replaced, being a very expensive repair.

  • 13 inch mid 09 MBP will not boot in safe mode or os disc. originally kernal panic but now blank screen. is this logic board? no liquid damage.

I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
    Thanks

    thanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds.

  • HT1436 My Power Mac G5 will not fully boot without safe mode, it only comes to a blue screen where my cursor duplicates in to 2, (one is frozen, one can move by moving the mouse). What is my problem, and how do I fix it?

    Great clue Lukas...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
