Blue Screen, Missing Dock and Mac HD problems

There seem to be at least three problems with my iMAC:
1) the screen is blue even though under System Preferences, it is set for an image,
2) the Dock is missing even though under Dock Settings, it should not be hidden and should be at the bottom (oddly when I select "right" location for the dock, the radio button does not light up, but is changed if I close and reopen the preferences screen), and
3) clicking on the Macintosh HD does not open it or the other files (e.g., PDF, *.doc) on the Desktop.
The only recent change I made to the system was to add Clamxav for virus scans, but that was scheduled to run on Monday. I have been traveling and my spouse is not sure when the issues started.
I have tried the PRAM re-set explained elsewhere, but that did not help. Any other possible solutions?

Welcome to Discussions - my first response would be to reset the PRAM, even though yu have already done it Try doing it again and if that doesn't help, check your disk using Disk Utility:
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Please post back with results, it could be a combination of problems, or it coul be corrupted preferences, try running Preferential Treatment to see if that's the case.

  • IMac intel 10.6.8 will not shut down. Blue screen comes on and spinning wheel goes round.

My iMac intel will not shut down. The version is 10.6.8. To turn it off I have to use the the power off button. Is there any one who can help me to solve the problem.
The blue screen comes on and the spinning wheel goes round and round until I have to turn it off by the power button.

I am having the same problem on my Mini.  I found an earlier thread (now archived) that suggested that this spinning wheel on shutdown of SL has something to do with power management settings.  Another idea was that it is related to EyeTV (which I do have running on this Mac).
Any ideas from the community on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!  (I have done the typical steps of repairing permissions and (from the Install CD) running Disk Utility, which reported no problems.)

  • Blue screen after login and HD and startup disk is full -how to erase data?

Blue screen after login and Hard drive and startup disk is full -How do I get in to erase data?

    this user tip might help:
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
    1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
    2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
Look at these links about freeing up more space.

  • T60 Type 2623 Blue Screen on Resume from Sleep Mode problem solved - XP Pro

I hope that this post ends some frustrations for some people.
I hope that IBM deals with this issue by getting ATI to fix the video driver issue.
After three months of tracking down blue screens when resuming from Sleep Mode and some lockups while working, I have identified the problem on my T60 Type 2623 running Windows XP-Pro and all service packs and updates.  The Sleep Mode resume issues were intermittant and it would be fine for a day or two and then reboot on Resume or reboot every time I used Resume for a while.  For months the Blue Screen would reboot and attempt to send the message to Microsoft using the logs, but the logs were always corrupted.  I disabled every driver that I could and the problem continued for months.
The problem solution came about when I decided to try my Rhapsody Music account after many months of not using it.  I kept getting a message about DRM (Digital Right Management) being disabled and Rhapsody software could not self-fix this.  So I finally called Rhapsody and they spent over an hour with me trying to get Rhapsody to work.  The support person asked me about my computer and I noted that it was an IBM T60.  He then asked about my Video Card and I responded that it was an ATI Mobility Radeon X1300.  After a few minutes on hold he asked about my driver version which was 8.442.3-080103a1-057754C the set from January 31, 2008.  He noted that there is a known problem wit the 8.4 driver and it interferes with DRM.  He had me go to control panel Settings and Hardware and then roll-back the driver to the prior version.
After a reboot, the DRM issue was solved and I soon discovered that my resume from Sleep mode no longer crashed.  In fact it has been fine and crash free for over a month now.  I have noted that the older driver can sometimes resize my screen to something like 600 X 800 if I close the lid under certain circumstances, but that is just a function key reset to get my normal desktop resolution back.  At least it is not a blue screen reboot with a corrupted log file.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Unfortunately I could not fix the problem so I wiped my system and loaded all new drivers before I found this posting.
Is there a way to get the old ATI driver that works? The only one available on the ATI and Lenovo website is the latest one with the problem. I agree with you David, Lenovo should have fixed this problem already with ATI.

  • Blue screen - no dock

My computer froze up on me while moving photos from imac to flash drive - i had to turn off computer... when i turned back on all i get is a blue screen, no dock. i have googled how to find dock, and i still can't find the dock - or background photo.... all my info is stil in computer i can tell-from the very top information bar on screen - i can still get onlilne, etc. but not the by clicking on safari icon or iphoto icon etc... all the icons have vanished.. WHERE'D THE GO!! HELP!!

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/ Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • Blue screen of death and restart.

Hi, I'm running Windows 7 through Boot Camp. I recently did updates for Windows 7 and had no issues. I use Windows 7 for online gaming only, prior to the new updates I had no issues. In the last two days I have experienced the blue screen of death and had my system restart back to the Apple OS. I then have to restart the computer to launch Boot Camp for Windows. Is ther anyone else having this issue? Or should I conduct a restore and prior to the recent updates?

    Any update regarding this issue?

Hi You may have a hardware fault take ipad to Apple Store. Ring then first to make an Appointment take box and you purchase paperwork they may give you A replacement. Before you do that Try a Reboot hold down power button & menu button hold both down until you see Apple Logo you may need to hold down for up to 30 Seconds But you may need to do this more than once. If it doesn't work take back to Apple Store. Cheers Brian

  • Blue Screen on Reboot + wake from sleep Problems and much much more!

I'm having major problems with my Mac here in the last couple of days and I'm completely out of ideas on how to fix it. Please help!!!! Here's what's going on...
The hard drive on my previous mac burnt out on Friday...so I grabbed one of the towers from another desk. I loaded OSX on it...but right away I was having problems with it. It started crashing and not coming up like it was supposed to...so I surfed around the forums for a while and decided that I just needed to do a clean install because when I checked the memory...it was almost completely full (only about 10Mb remaining out of a 40Gb HD).
At first...the clean install was really working great. Then it had some problems waking up once it went to sleep. I ran updates, zapped the PRAM, changed the internal battery and adjusted the power settings to that it is never supposed to sleep. Then it was all working fine for a few minutes.
I'm a graphic designer so I need all sorts of graphics/font software. So I loaded Extensis Suitcase X1, and Quark with no problems. Then when i attempted to load Adobe CS2...it popped up with the "Please reboot your machine" error right in the middle of it. Now, I can only get the machine to reboot in safe mode...and it freezes up again if it goes to sleep. Upon a reboot it goes to a blue screen with the cursor...but I can not do anything. I can load from the install disk and have run the Disk Utility a few times. I verified the disk and that was ok. When I ran the Verify Permissions, it had thousands and thousands of bad permissions. I ran the fix and now the computer says that they are all fine. I'm totally out of ideas...and I have jobs that need to go to press today that are waiting for me to get this computer going again. Please help!!!!
    Thanks!
    Eric

    Hi ewhite01,
I don't know at this point if you have time to reload the hard drive from scratch, but that may be what you have to do. The permissions storm was caused by the Quark installer. It's a fairly well known bug in version 6.x. What you need to do when installing it is NOT let it install to the Applications folder. Instead, choose the desktop. After the install is complete, then move the Quark folder to the Applications folder. Any other updates (such as 6 to 6.5) can be done there, just not the initial install.

  • HELP NEEDED! Blue Screen of Death and Gray Screen

I really need a help from a OS X Mountain Lion. I have been trying to fix my Macbook Pro 15' early 2011 for about a week without succeed.
    PROBLEM:
My MBP isn't sarting up. Everything looks normal the chime, Apple logo, the wheel and after those things it get stucked on a gray screen.
The computer doesn't boot from USB, DVD and the cm-R restoration isn't working.
    THINGS I'VE DONE:
    1. I took to an Apple authorized service in Curitiba, Brazil. They reinstalled Mountain Lion (R$90,00 or about U$45,00). After couple hours of usage. Same problem started to occur again. I call them again saying that the same problem persist and they said for reinstallation, there isn't a warranty. I have to pay again for the service.
    2. Reinstall OS X. I made a partion a thumb drive and reinstalled everything. After few hours same problem again. The system wasn't starting.
    3. I bought a new HD. I replaced the original HDD for a SSD OCZ Vertex 3. I installed the OSX in this brand new SSD. The computer worked for 1 hour and boom, same problem of booting and starting.
    4. I have tried NVRAM and PRAM (cmd+option+P+R), nothing happened. Gray screen after the Apple logo.
    5. Verbose-mode (cmd+V).
    6. Single-user Mode (cmd+S).
    7. Start in Safe Mode. (Shift). The bar doesn't load until the end and I get a gray screen.
    8. Restoring from internet. (cmd+R). Sometimes, I get the Blue Screen or the screen turn black, but I can still hear the fan spinning.
    SOME PHOTOS OF THE PROCESSES:
    SOLUTION, PLEASE?
I appreciate any helpful comment. Thanks.

    Download at www.memtestosx.org
Power on your MBP while holding down the Command and S keys to force Mac OS X to boot into Single User Mode. Once you see a black screen with white text, you can release the key combination. After all the system logging is done scrolling past, type 'memtest all 2' (without the quotes) to test all memory two times. Two passes should be enough to detect any blatant problems, but I wouldn’t hesitate to let it run for hours on end if I suspected an intermittent memory problem (memtest all). When complete, you should be greeted with “All tests passed” if your RAM is in good condition. If your system locks up or freezes indefinitely during the test, you may have a bad memory module on your hands.

  • Help! blue screen of death and ibook won't boot at all

I ran the software update on my ibook (800 mhz, G3 running 10.4.3) today. I repaired permissions and rebooted before hand. I don't have any hacks on it. I have plently of room on the drive for the update (more than 6gigs on the 30 gig drive). I know my ibook is feeling its age, but now she won't start at all!
When I ran the update (which I already did on my imac with no problems), the ipod updater, quicktime and something else installed without problem. I came into the room to find that the Mac OS 10.4.4 updater had a red exclimation point next to it, and I had an error message that there was a problem with the update and that I needed to reboot. Restarting was my only option so I did. ibook would not start. It hung on the "starting OS X" screen forever (45 minutes). I force-restarted and booted in single-user mode. I have an app called AppleJack installed so I ran that (repairs permissions and such in single-user mode). I rebooted. Nothing. Blue screen of death.
Any ideas? Should I reinstall OS 10.4 from the CD?

How is mail different than that?
Mail keeps mailboxes in their own separate Finder files.
    Home -> Library -> Mail
Home -> Library -> Mail Downloads
Notice also that Mailboxes themselves have their own folders in
    Home -> Library -> Mail -> Mailboxes
Addressbook keeps addresses for Mail in its own set of Finder Files.
Home -> Library -> Application Support -> Addressbook
    iCal keeps it in
    Home -> Library -> Calendars
Whereas Microsoft Office is simply everything in one user belongs to:
Home -> Documents -> Microsoft User Data -> Identities -> Main Identity -> Database
So in reality you have 4 different places, and simple data corruption inside the database file itself is not going to take out all of the data when you use Mail, Addressbook, and iCal. I find it is much more robust to use Mail, Addressbook, and iCal purely for the reason that data corruption is not as prevalent a problem when your database gets large.
Single user mode is not a good idea, until the data is actually backed up in some fashion. Once you are getting input/output errors, trying to get it out of a place where there is data corruption by using a data recovery program is the first step with Prosoft Data Rescue.
You may try to rebuild the database file too, which might work, but since your machine is suffering a lot of input/output errors, I'm suspicious of the health of your hard drive, and you are booting to a blue screen, single user mode may not be enough, even Disk Warrior may not be enough. Now's the time to get all the data off the hard drive into another in a safe place. Data Rescue may be able to recover it. If not, you may have to deal with a data recovery firm.

  • OS X 10.4.5 starts up to blue screen...and nothing more

I was in process of copying files from a 3rd Gen iPod when the iPod battery died--stalling the file copy. I attempted a force-quit on the Finder, which began causing issues. After attempting to reboot using the Apple menu, I rebooted by holding down the power button and restarting and now OS X 10.4.5 starts up to a blue screen with the pointer in the top left corner.
Any help would be great--this is just day 2 of the new computer.

Hi, j. Welcome to the Discussions.
A blue screen at startup generally indicates a damaged or incompatible Startup or Login Item. However, the hard restart you describe may have caused other issues.
    1. I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the process specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. If that does not resolve the issue, see my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ for steps that might help you with this problem.
    3. If Finder continues to be problematic after the above, See my "Finder Issues? How to delete its preferences" FAQ.
    Good luck!
