Blue screen - no dock

My computer froze up on me while moving photos from imac to flash drive - i had to turn off computer... when i turned back on all i get is a blue screen, no dock. i have googled how to find dock, and i still can't find the dock - or background photo.... all my info is stil in computer i can tell-from the very top information bar on screen - i can still get onlilne, etc. but not the by clicking on safari icon or iphoto icon etc... all the icons have vanished.. WHERE'D THE GO!! HELP!!

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/ Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
Then try a dock reset.
Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

It sounds like your problem is located in that one particular account, could be bad user account permissions, corrupt caches or some sort of Library folder corruption.
It's times like this it's good to have another bare bones Admin account on the machine because that will allow one to access the files of the other and transfer them off.
If your getting to the point in the Steps that it's possible that data destruction will occur, and you don't have a recent backup of your files off the machine, then you can install OS X on a external drive and recover them.

  • Blue Screen, Missing Dock and Mac HD problems

There seem to be at least three problems with my iMAC:
    1) the screen is blue even though under System Preferences, it is set for an image,
    2) the Dock is missing even though under Dock Settings, it should not be hidden and should be at the bottom (oddly when I select "right" location for the dock, the radio button does not light up, but is changed if I close and reopen the preferences screen), and
    3) clicking on the Macintosh HD does not open it or the other files (e.g., PDF, *.doc) on the Desktop.
The only recent change I made to the system was to add Clamxav for virus scans, but that was scheduled to run on Monday. I have been traveling and my spouse is not sure when the issues started.
I have tried the PRAM re-set explained elsewhere, but that did not help. Any other possible solutions?

Welcome to Discussions - my first response would be to reset the PRAM, even though yu have already done it Try doing it again and if that doesn't help, check your disk using Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Please post back with results, it could be a combination of problems, or it coul be corrupted preferences, try running Preferential Treatment to see if that's the case.

  • Blue Screen (after restart) but everything else is fine.

    Hi,
I have an Xserve 2.3Ghz DP that is running fine a dandy except that the monitor connected to it shows just a blue screen. (no Dock, no menu bar). The strange thing is that when Retrospect starts up for it's automatic daily backup, the menu bar appears but it has only "retrospect options" available, the apple menu is all greyed out. Another anomaly is that during the startup procedure, I can see the grey apple "centered" onscreen, then the blue progress bar appears with all the normal information. But as soon as it's past those screens, the display just goes to a solid blue.
As I said before, everything else seems fine, my retrospect backups are happening as scheduled.
I use this server to burn and verify all my archives, so I really appreciated having a monitor connected. I've tried three other monitors all of them display just blue.
I thought maybe the Dock was hidden, it's not. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Turn off the modem while you're trying to access the router. And turn off any software firewalls or browser proxy settings.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • X200 with OCZ ssd blue screens when booting from docking station

The x200 blue screens when booting from the docking station. If I take the laptop out of the docking station to boot and then dock once booted the laptop is fine.
The issue started happening when you I upgraded the laptop form xp to windows 7 and installed an OCZ vertex 2 solid state drive.
I have tried updating the firmware on the ssd using this utility

W520 fails to boot 100% of the time when docked. Blue screen shows SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, STOP x0000003B for nvlddmkm.sys
nvlddmkm.sys is the NVIDIA driver, which is version 8.17.12.9620, the latest shown on the NVIDIA and Lenovo websites. BIOS is also the latest.
Systems boots fine if I remove it from the dock, but it will not boot when docked.
    Windows 7 PRO SP1

    Any suggestions?

Boot with Option held down. After the cursor changes to an arrow, Command-. (Command Period) should open and close the optical drive. After you insert the disc, click the curved arrow to have it re-scan the discs for boot volumes. Then select the optical drive and click the straight right-pointing arrow to start.
Try it with the Apple Hardware Test disc first and run Extended Tests.

  • IMac G5 – Won't startup except in Safe Mode (10.5.5). Otherwise Blue Screen

I’ve had my iMac (pre-iSight) for about 3 years now and up until recently never had any major problems with it, despite using it for about 12 hours per day, every day.. A couple of minor problems however had developed, but several months ago and didn’t seem to affect the system:
    (1) Software update stopped working (had to download & install updates manually) &
    (2) Couldn’t verify or repair permissions (even pre 10.5.5. Even when I tried to repair them from another startup disk, the message I got was ‘no package receipts’ – although I could see that they were there in the “receipts” library folder)
A couple of days ago I decided to try and fix the problems by erasing my startup disk (after backing up all my data of course) and re-installing 10.5 from the installation DVD and then bringing the system up to date. At the time I did this I hadn’t upgraded or installed any new software for several weeks.
For about one day after that it worked fine. The only ‘alarming’ thing that I noticed during that day was that whilst playing a movie the CPU temperature rose to about 89 C. (I use Temperature Monitor). I read somewhere that the CPU temperature should not exceed 85 for this model and that if it did the system would either shutdown or go to sleep, so I was surprised to see it go as high as 89 (assuming that the right temperature was being reported) before it went to sleep. However, even after that it, it started up correctly a couple of times.
Since then it will only boot in Safe mode, and when it does it carries on working indefinitely without any problems. The only thing that I lose in safe mode which seems odd – in addition to all the things that I know I should lose – is Audio. The preferences panel says: no input, output devices attached (ie not even the ones built-in).
If I try a normal start up, the system will go through the grey screen, apple logo, spinning ‘cog’ etc and then almost always go to a blue screen where it stays put. There is a black cursor in the top left corner which, when I try to move it, duplicates itself so that I end up with 2 cursors – one which moves and one which stays in the top left corner.
On very rare occasions (about 1 time in 20) during a normal startup the system will get past the blue screen and to my desktop (in fact this happened several times consecutively before I got to the point where I could only startup in Safe Mode). However, moving the cursor into the menu bar or into the dock would result in the whole screen freezing – the cursor would move, but nothing else would happen). Also I would see that several pixels were ‘missing’ from the desktop. The desktop is normally solid green, but I would see 3 or 4 red and black pixels.
I’ve studied all the forum topics that even remotely resemble my problem and tried just about everything I can think of including:
    1. Resetting SMU & PRAM (repetitively)
    2. Running the Apple Hardware Test – All tests passed
    3. Replacing the PRAM battery
    4. Check that the fans are working (I can hear them and when I take the back off, both fans spin)
    5. Erased the disk again, installed the OS from the installation DVD, so that there is no third party software on the system. (and then tried a normal boot both with the original 10.5.1 and 10.5.5 after applying the combo update).
    6. I have several external disks with several copies of the OS on various partitions, including a 10.4.11, but trying to boot from any of those ends with the same result. I can only boot in safe mode, other wise I get a blue screen (or very rarely it will squeak through to the desktop & then immediately freeze).
Always the same result – safe boot only.
From reading through the various topics, I get the feeling that my problem may be related to the graphics card, but if that is the case I don’t understand why the system will always boot in safe mode and then run without any problems all day. It even allows me to play movies: very jerky (and no sound), both when I move the QT window and the images themselves, but it still plays.
Any thoughts on what the problem might be (other than fatal) would be greatly appreciated. Or an explanation why, if it is the graphics card, the system will continue working after safe boot.
I’ve copied out the system details from Profiler that I think are relevant below.

    Many thanks for your help

I had a very similar problem with my 20" iMac G5 ALS running 10.4.11. It began with random freezing inside the OS and intermittent slow booting, but quickly progressed (over a matter of days) to hanging at the blue screen before the logon window, just as you described.
I too, found that booting in Safe Mode was successful. I ruled out the airport card by manually installing that kernel extension in Safe Mode. A check of the logs pointed to "ATY" which I've since found out is a reference to the ATI drivers, which brought me to this post.
At least on my system--and I have tested this on Tiger (10.4 and 10.4.11) and Leopard (10.5 and 10.5.6), the only .kext that needs to be removed / renamed is ATIRadeon9700.kext. My preferred method of doing this is to drop to the terminal and type:
    sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext.disabled
This preserves the relevant permissions and ownership, which you'd otherwise have to reset manually if you copy the file elsewhere and then delete the original in the Finder, and then want to restore it to its original condition, BTW:
    sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext
    sudo chown -R 0:0 /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon.kext
Any OS X update will replenish the file, so you should be at the ready to reboot into Safe Mode the first time and rename the file again.
The downside to all this is that the video acceleration doesn't work, so graphics operations are slow and jerky, but at least everything else seems to be okay, in my case anyway.
Popping open the case did indeed reveal four bulging capacitors. I bit the bullet and purchased some replacements, part number 647-UHN0J182MPD from Mouser:
    http://mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=pjJ%252bhmlZec6zHXGt6EoiHw%3d%3d
Although I wasn't looking forward to desoldering my logic board, I wasn't real hopeful that I'd have success getting the local Apple shop to replace it under warranty either. I did find some helpful information on performing the fix yourself:
    http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
And I do want to be able to sell this thing for at least a little cash to help offset the cost of a new quad-core iMac, whenever they're released.
Fortunately, for me, the service tech at the Genius Bar at the local Apple store agreed to fix it under the power and video extended warranty, even though it was slightly outside of the warranty period, due to the fact that I had brought it in about a year ago and had the power supply replaced under the same warranty.
I almost didn't bother to bring the machine in because it's a real nasty day here today, and I figured they'd just tell me "That'll be $800 to fix it," and I'd end up doing surgery on the logic board anyway in addition to carrying the thing up and down the steps to my condo. Boy am I glad I did, though. Apple customer service rocks.

  • Blue screen aftermath on AL powerbook 10.4.5

This is mostlya repost and overlaps and overlong, please forgive... Im writing this at work.
Please help, I will build a shrine in your honour (right after I clean my house). Dale suggested there might be some help if I chucked it out here - thanx dale.
break time in class and I fire up the DIII demo to show a friend - oops too loud _ hit lower volume function key to no effect - oh well, class is starting again, quit, take notes....
next break; time to play again - funny, the volume keys workin Doom now...
Huh? what, no buttons? cmd option esc - no window so I press enter. Miraculously Doom quits, my resolution resets, all seems well... until I try to click anywhere.
With nowhere else to turn to, I shut down with the power button *hey I had no choice(. Reboot, and..... blue screen. Hey they hired bill gates!
so then started much research, cd boots, etc. interesting points
at first, disk utility found no errors on my drive, and only two permissions were corrupted.
second time round, disk utility found plenty of errors. The verify step found some illegal names and then quit with an "underlying process has failed" or something like that . (the window stayed open). I ran repair and it seemed to work. I quit disk utility and go to startup disk to reboot from my newly fixed disk but.... its not there!
back to disk utility and its not there either!!!
look in system profiler; the drive is on ATA but its not mounted!
    Use the power button again
now disk utility sees the drive, but it is grayed out, run all the steps and it comes with lots of bad permissions and only a few errors on the disk.
now I look in the terminal; The drive is mounted and I can root around the files, but thats not really much use.
After looking on the web, I decide to try a safeboot first, (holding shift) and miraculously again, it boots no problem!!
this is where I make an image of my book onto my wifes imac.
Okay so it all seems hunkey dorey now, but I eventually realize that my keyboard mapping (actually the keyboard type) has changed to standard US. I am in Japan using a Japanese laptop with keys printed in Japanese (brackets, @ symbol, quotes, etc are different) and there seems no way to turn it back. Apple help has a section on changing the keyboard type:
    Mac Help
    Index
    Specifying a keyboard type
When you connect a keyboard that is not immediately recognized, the Keyboard Setup Assistant automatically opens so you can specify the keyboard type (ANSI, JIS, or ISO). There are three keyboard types that Mac OS X recognizes: ISO (Europe), JIS (Japan), and ANSI. The ANSI keyboard is a standard 101-key layout widely used in the US, North America, and many other parts of the world.
If you are having trouble with your keyboard, you may need to specify the type manually. You can use Keyboard & Mouse preferences to open the Keyboard Setup Assistant and specify the keyboard type.
    To specify the keyboard type:
Open System Preferences and click Keyboard & Mouse.
    Click Keyboard.
Click the "Change Keyboard Type" button.
Follow the steps when the Keyboard Setup Assistant appears.
except this button doesnt exist in the Mouse and Keyboard Control panel. Mac tech support was no help either, they just stumbled through the recipe for setting my international input settings, which are just fine, and which I've tried already. They couldnt find the magic button either, or tell me how to launch the keyboard setup assistant. They tried to tell me that my mac didnt have this assistant installed because it was a laptop with a builtin keyboard. As a sidenote, they couldnt find their <expletive... expletive> if it was <likely to be censored if I typed it> down there at Apple Support Tokyo.
Doesn't anybody know how to launch the keyboard setup assistant / edit a file / set a preference with terminal which will give me back a JIS keyboard?
To compound matters, I am living with about 15 application crashes so far today incl. the Dock, Photoshop CS2, Automator, iTunes, iPhoto, and Finder (with varying degrees of frequency). Automator scripts saved as folder action plugins also seem to have the need to run between 3 and 12 times before they feel that they are done, whereas they work fine from automator. I opened the plugin in script editor and did nothing but retype the same thing and save it, and I got it down to only launching the script twice when adding to the folder. :'-/
Its so strange I also thought it was a virus.
Good luck to us all who have seen this bluescreen - Im not totally convinced this isnt a hardware problem, like bad bits on the drive or in some ram somewhere, but I don't know much, except that I seem to know more than the Apple Japan tech support guys.

AL 15in DL SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I haven't heard of that before personally but there are two troubleshooting ideas that come to mind:
    1. login as a new user on your computer and see how it looks. they'll have fresh settings so it should be a rather pure look at your computer.
    2. if the other user does not have the problem then look into any fonts you have installed in /~youraccount/Library/Fonts.
Without being familiar with your issue I don't know of it is a font issue or a hardware issue. Both are annoying.

  • Blue screen only after leopard install. HELP!!!!

Here is what I did. I installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro and it booted perfectly. I did the upgrade option so I wouldn't lose my editing and graphics software. I decided to upgrade my Dual 867 MDD, which has a Sonnettech 1.67 processor for mirrored drive door macs. This is where the **** has come in. For the first attempt, I installed the upgrade on the system drive with was only an 80gig drive with 14 gigs left. After I came back in from letting the install go overnight, my computer monitor only showed a blue screen and the mouse arrow. i can move the mouse arrow around which is a good sign. I got frustrated and then took out the 80 gig system drive and replaced it with a carbon copy backup drive of 10.4.11. This replacement drive is a 120gig 7200 rpm PATA drive. I then installed Leopard on that drive, got the success checkmark at the end and rebooted. Again, the blue screen came back with a functional arrow. My only guess is that the low end ATI card (the original that came with the Dual 867's) is somehow flipped or reversed, preventing me from accessing the dock and system functions. I don't know of a keystroke that will flip them. Why would the mouse be functional and nothing else? The card has a HDMI port, albeit one of the older ones that is rounded and not square. At this point, I"m stuck on blue screen with roving mouse.I also could not get the install CD to eject, even when holding the eject key during the restart. I finally got it out. After a third reboot, I got the dreaded error message of death stating to restart. Any suggestions?

where can i get migration assistant? will carbon copy not do? my situation is worse now. i don't know why i forgot to go with archive and install and chose upgrade. life is **** for my g4 now. the new situation is that if i choose archive and install or the clean install option, there is an error message at the end saying the install failed and that there is an error with the disc. I have also seen an error message saying the install failed due to not finding the oxford dictionary something. on top of that, i can't reboot into OS9 because leopord alters or deletes an important extension that the sonnettech processor needs. they sent me the new file and once i overcome these failed install issues i can add that new file. oh well. wonder how vista installs are going?

  • Ipod + itunes = blue screen of death & reboot - HELP PLEASE!

I'll try to make a long story as short as possible here.
i've had a 40G ipod for over a year and a half now. back in the beginning things were working fine. with the size i hadn't done any syncing for a long long time. however, the ipod crapped out so i got a replacement from the apple store.
after registering the new ipod i was having trouble syncing. it would upload a few hundred songs and then freeze or cause a reboot. i uninstalled the ipod software as well, installed the latest itunes software - over the previous version, installed the latest ipod updater software and restored the ipod.
again, i was able to sync for brief periods in 3 different tries - amassing a whole six hundred and something songs. after each try itunes said syncing was complete (but not even close - had just over 2000 mp3s looking to sync up). unbelievably things got worse. now, if the ipod is docked and itunes is running - regardless of which is done first - my pc will get the blue screen of death and reboot itself.
also, without itunes and the ipod docked, it shows up as an i: drive, but when i try to browse it though my computer, it locks up the machine and shows nothing.
any help out there is GREATLY appreciated!
    here are my specs:
    - ipod 40 Gig, with click wheel and four buttons below the screen with
    dock & firewire cable
    - pc running windows xp pro
    - firewire card with 3 ports
    - ipod & itunes software located on 120G c: drive
    - mp3 collection located on secondary 160G d: drive
    - 3/4 gig of ram
p.s. i have mcafee running and i've tried everything with it on as well as off. doesn't seem to make a difference.
also, i have checked a TON of posts on apple.com as well as other discussion groups and couldn't find an answer.

    hi Douglas!
first promise me that you'll back up your data. having your PC shut down in non-standard ways (for
    b any
reason) increases your risk of file corruption and putting scruffy spots on your hard drive.
Now some basic first aid. download some fresh definitions and do some vigorous virus and spyware scans. run your favorite hard-disk checking utility. do a disk cleanup.
now let's follow up on the blue screen of death. Perversely, i've started to become pleased when people report BSODs under these circumstances. we can wring a lot of information from a BSOD error message. there's also usually something concrete to go on in the error logs.
    (1) what BSOD error number and message are you getting? here's a reference:
    http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm
    (2) squeeze your error logs for all they're worth. right-click on "My Computer", select manage. click on your event viewer. click on your application and system logs, and look for errors and warnings happening at roughly the same time as your crashes.
click on the relevant warnings to see if you can find any commonalities in the errors/warnings. follow up the Help and Support links to see if you can find any suggested "User action" or relevant MS KB documents. (sometimes these things are there, sometimes they aren't.)
    good luck! keep us posted.
    love, b

  • Blue screen iphone 5S ...

    Hello ,
i have Iphone 5S i got it now , when i press the on button it go to screen that want me to plug the iphone to itunes , when im doing this i got only one opion is to do Restore , when i try to do Restore the iphone go to loading screen and after 5s i get blue screen ... in the itunes i get 2009 error ... what can i do ?

See this Apple doc -> Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    Check USB connections
    Related errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response,” and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you checked your connections and are still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues.
If you the port at the bottom of the iPhone is damaged somehow, setup service for it.

  • Windows Blue Screen - when trying to re-sync an IPOD after doing 5 R's

My windows based Itunes failed to recognize my ipod, so I trouble shooted and finally ended up doing the 5 R's.
This resulted in a "Blank Ipod" (after restore).
I was able to successfully get Itunes to recognize my ipod after the restore. That is when a "major problem" occurred.
When my 37 gigs of MP3s on my PC attempt to automatically update onto my "blank ipod", my system crashes giving me the dreaded windows BLUE SCREEN! The error messgae indicates that a physical memory dump occurred and the system shuts down.
I figure it has something to do with all of those gigs trying to update onto the ipod. SO, I start to manually transfer (drag and drop) about 100 mp3s at a time onto the ipod within itunes. It still crashed after the 3rd batch of 100 mp3s.
Has anyone experienced this? Does it have anything to do with Mirosoft's newest IE vunerability? I use Firefox usually, but sometimes HAVE to use IE. What can I do?
    This really *****.
    thanks for your help.

    Dell Dimension Windows XP

    hi zeppy!
hmmmmmm. a 0x7E? that's not the most commonly reported BSOD code here.
but the MS KB seemed to have at least one clue for us.
    (1) sometimes people can get blue screens when they plug in an ipod if their FireWire, USB, or dock has gone bad. i see from that STOP message resource that the 0x7E can be associated with dodgy USB.
by way of tracking down that possibility, do you still get the BSOD if you connect to a different port? (or, if you've got a dock, connect directly to a port instead?)
    (2) on general principles, we'd better check for malware. download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer online scans, run those as well. (they can sometimes pick up an infection in cases where the security software on the PC has been compromised.)
    (3) especially if you've recently installed any new hardware on your PC, head into Device Manager to check to see if there's any alert/warning messages showing up next to any of your devices. if you see any, what do they say?
    (4) let's also let's also capture a minidump of the crash and send it to the Discussions Hosts, so they can throw it over the fence for the Apple engineers to analyze.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
And then send it to a Discussions Host. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. Also give as much information about the context of the crash (in the email) as you can.
    love, b

  • Blue screen when try to update bios on lenovo w520

Hello everyone  I'm pretty new here and I bought a new  laptop two days ago
my model  of my leptop is lenovo  W520 (4276-37U) / i7-2720QM / Quadro 1000M and my os is win 7 pro 64
and i want to share with  you the problem that i have  experienced as I tried to update my bios verision
the problem with the blue screen start Immediately when you begin the BIOS update and popup window going up
After reading several articles I tried to solve the problem and thankfully I did it and I solved it ~!
So if it happens to someone I suggest you read what I did to solved this problem :
    1) first go to your anti virus program and disable it  and turn it off . i have  norton internet security and i have neutralized all options  . (if you have a firewall that came with  the anti virus program turn it off )
    2) after this go to control panel --action center ---change user account control settings -  And put  it to the lowest level
(never notify ) and click ok
    3) go to windows firewall and turn it off
    4) now locate the lenovo airbag protection utility  open it and go to Configuration tab and Uncheck  the box
      ( turn off)
"enable active protection system "   and then click apply .
all done now you can try update your bios Without getting a blue screen !
Hope I helped them all and everyone who had this annoying problem
    thanks
    shayy

Interesting. I've never performed any of the steps documented above and all of my BIOS updates (and updates via System Update) have been applied with no issues. Perhaps I'm just living dangerously?
    Several items, however, were omitted:
     Fully charged battery
     Connected to AC supply
     Not in a docking station
These items have been true from day 1 of ThinkPads.
