Blue screen of death, crash broke Mac OS but not Windows?

I was just working on installing Fallout on my bootcamp partition of Windows 7. There was a corrupted file that gave me the blue screen crash, and I had to reload windows into safe mode to get it to quit crashing on me. After I had my fun, I needed to go back on my Mavericks side. I clicked the boot camp icon, and just have it the instructions to reboot into the Mac OS. Now it won't load, after the computer restart, I get the grey apple symbol and then a progress bar on the bottom. I wait for the progress bar to do its thing, and as soon as it hits full (~20min) the computer just shuts off. Does anyone have any experience with this? I haven't seen that progress bar in any other Mac OS 10.X. I am also unable to get it to load into safe mode on the Mac side either. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, I have seen that. I am looking for a way to at least save some information while I am at it. I checked out disc utility, it shows that my Mac partition is there, but it is greyed out. When I try to verify/repair it, it says that it can't do it. If I try to restore it to a secondary harddrive, it doesn't work either. Not from disc utility.
I loaded up my windows side, and downloaded Macrium, which is a disc copier. I formatted my secondary hardrive after taking the movies off of it, to FAT32 so I could still read/write from the Windows side. Interestingly enough, the cloner, Macrium, is perfectly capable of accessing my Mac OS partition. Another something interesting is that while I had it copying over my Mac OS partition onto my secondary HDD, I accidently cancelled it while trying to wake my computer up. I went back into disc utility to format that harddrive again to try again, but when it was formatting it, it said it could not unmount my copied files that were from my Mac OS partition onto the secondary harddrive. Does this mean that there is just something wrong with the file system itself? Does anyone know what might cause this? I just don't want to be given a link to erase everything, it isn't helpful at all.

  • Windows blue screen of death crash during Boot Camp driver install

I have been trying to get Windows running under Boot Camp on my 2.66 GHz Alu iMac, but without success.
Boot Camp partitions the drive and Windows XP SP2 installs properly. I boot into Windows, and then insert my Leopard install DVD to install the Apple drivers.
The driver installation gets about halfway, then the machine crashes with a blue screen of death and restarts automatically. It puts me back in Windows, with no drivers installed.
I am installing the Boot Camp drivers from the Leopard retail DVD. This machine is missing the Leopard install/restore discs that came with it, and Apple want to charge £99 for a replacement set.
Is there any way I can get the Boot Camp drivers installed, or do I need to find a friend with the exact same machine and original system discs and use those?

    Aloha Adam.
Don't know whether this is helpful, but below is a list of drivers that are installed (as of Aug 08).
Also, if you have not already, you may find FAQ helpful, as well, at URL: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1656
Lastly, though they're a year old, the Update 2.1 is in .exe format, so if you can get it the .exe download package onto your installed Windows OS somehow (e.g., copied onto a CD, IF Windows can read it), you might stand a chance of alternate means of installing the drivers.
If this helps, please so indicate.

  • Blue Screen of Death on a Mac, never thought I'd see it.

This my first Mac product ever. I was hoping to have both Mac and Windows on one machine for convenience, and attempt to use Boot Camp. Everything went smoothly: the partition and installation of Windows (Vista Ultimate 32bit). Then I installed the drivers using the OS X installation disc.
Then, I saw it: the blue screen of death. I have found no solution so far. I really hope someone out there has an answer, because this is really frustrating.

UPDATE > -every minute or so ( I haven't timed it ) the screen displays some white writing on a black bacground
two different variants of this have appeared in the first the time/date computer name and :/dev / console operation not supported by device text appeared on the screen in white over a black background.... I entered my admin password , clicked enter ...nothing happened .
Then the black screen returned to blue for a while.
A black screen appeared a second time and said " welcome to Darwin "
then returned to a blue screen
Is there any commands any one might know of that I could input when the text appears that could help find a solution or fix this 'issue '
    I would really appreciate it

  • Can connect to Mac users, but not Windows.

I have been able to connect to other Mac users signed onto AIM accounts in iChat, but not Windows users signed onto AIM. Help with this problem would be greatly appreciated, as I am at college and away from all my loved ones, and desperately want to chat with them.

    Hi,
I am sorry that only 2 hours and 15 minutes left you disappointed.
    Some things to consider.
    1) they have to be on XP.
    2) they have to be using AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro
    3) if they use AIM 5.9 they have to Tune the Camera and Mic to the Application. See message 570 in that link (Access to these preferences in in the My AIM menu now or use F3)
    4) Whichever App they use it has to be Enabled through the XP firewall. IF at Service Pack 2 they need these instructions an earlier version of XP has to have the Firewall disabled.

The ports that iChat uses have to be opened at your end although it sounds like they are.
The port for AIM/Trillian have to opened in their modem at their end.

  • Blue screen of death on a Mac??

My MacBook will not start up. It gets past gray/apple boot screen, goes to blue screen and then does nothing. Have already tried everything on this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303234
    Can anyone help me?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

sounds to me like a possible failed hard drive. when you go to disk utilities from the startup disk, do you see your hard drive? if not, that's most likely the problem.
That's happened to me twice now... very frustrating.

  • Satellite P200-17B - Blue Screen of Death crashes

    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=26790&tstart=50
In the thread above, I asked for the crash of my P200-17B.
After some reply, I went to the dealer, and they told me, since the crashes of my laptop are not easy to be represent in there support lab.
This maybe hard for them to deal with it. If you insiste to send it TOSHIBA authorized service provider and they can not find anything wrong.
Clearly I have to pay for all related cost. What should I do now?
The crash of the system occurs only once a day, and randomly.
How can I represent the crash in a short time in the dealer's lab?

    Hi wind
Sorry to hear you have this problem. As Eldorado already said try to make picture of this error message.
Anyway the best way to test it properly is to install OS again. You know, if something happens just from time to time it is not easy to say what is wrong there. I presume that service exchange HDD, make clean OS installation and test how it works. If nothing happens there must be everything OK. Before you get your notebook back they put your HDD back and you can use your notebook as before.
I really recommend you to use delivered recovery media and make clean OS installation. Before you do this back up all your data because before recovery procedure starts the whole HDD will be formatted.

  • IPod Causing Blue Screen of Death on Windows Vista

I'm posting this in the correct forum now:
For some reason, all of a sudden, whenever I plug in or unplug my iPod to my computer, the computer crashes and quickly shows a blue screen of death before restarting. It has not done this before today. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with the iPod or the computer that would cause it to do this.
When iTunes opened, it said there was a Windows Update to fix a problem with iPods corrupting upon disconnecting from the PC, but when I tried to download the update, it said something about the update not being needed for this system. The iPod isn't corrupted, everything is still on it. I don't know what the deal is.
I tried system restore back to like a week ago, but this did nothing to help.

First, update the USB Root Driver on your computer: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136 Even if there are no new drivers for your computer, follow the last part of the article and let Windows update your USB driver.
Second, be sure you are using a rear port on your computer.
Third, with only the iPod, mouse and keyboard connected (no speakers, no mic, nothing else), reassign the drive letter on your iPod. Try M or P or Z: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499

Boot from a Windows 7 disc/USB and after it loads press SHIFT+F10 to bring up the command line.  From here, you can navigate to the "C:\Windows\System32\codeintegrity\" directory and delete the "bootcat.cache" file and reboot.
If you do not have Windows 7 bootable media to boot from then you can download the ISO from here and burn to a disc or use a USB drive:
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
Another option would be to pull the physical drive from the computer and access it using another desktop or laptop to manually delete the "bootcat.cache" file as well.
Afterwards, please upgrade to Service Pack 1, so this issue cannot repeat itself.

  • Sat M40-236 Blue Screen of Death

Just a few days ago i've bought Toshiba Satellite M40-236. I disliked the pre-installed Windows XP Home Edition and installed Windows XP Pro with SP2 integrated. Updated Bios, Video drivers and so on. Everything worked fine, installed all the updates from Microsoft update site and then tried to install Windows Media Player from microsoft site. Then, when tried to open music file in media player the Windows shutted down with the blue screen of Death. After restart the blue screen remained. Tried to load to Safe Mode, Last good known configuration ... no result ... the blue screen remains.
Tried to reinstall Win XP HE from Recovery DVD-Rom, the same result ... after files are copied to HDD and the system is rebooted, Win XP Logo with running progress bar and suddenly Blue Screen of Death :(((
Tried to reinstall different verions of Windows (2000,XP Home, Xp Pro, 98SE) - no result, after it says Starting Microsoft Windows (during installation) the blue screen of death and nothing more .... STOP: 0x0000007E or STOP: 0x0000007F.
May be someone has the same? May be any solution of this problem? I think due to the Notebook is new one ... maybe there is smth with RAM ?

    Hello Kresh
Well, its very difficult to say what is wrong.
I dont think that the BIOS is wrong because a wrong
BIOS update procedure has damage the motherboard and it would be not possible to run or start anything.
Sorry I dont have a proper answer.
In my opinion you should contact the Toshiba service partner because I dont think that you will solve this issue by yourself.
Ps: You cant downgrade the BIOS.
Only the ASP has a possibility to do this.
    Bye

  • Blue Screen of Death Hangups.. any advice??

Hi, I've recently setup a system with the below configuration, and am getting the blue screen of death at various stages during the intial windows install. These occur at various times, sometimes I get to the copying files stage, sometimes not, but never to any GUI stage. POST seems fine, and the D-bracket gives the all clear, my best guess is a faulty RAM chip, but I would appreciate some advice before going out to purchase replacement parts. (Limited funds)
Current plan was to start with a new RAM chip, though I've read since purchasing that these Corsair chips don't overclock so well, so may consider another brand. Then perhaps a small IDE HDD, though I've managed to get through the formatting stage, and even file copy on occasion, so this seems a little unlikely.
Error codes if they help have been 0x0000004e and 0x0000007e (also an IRQ_LESS_NOT_EQUAL - 0x0000001e (I think?))

I have an MSI NEO2 with very similiar problems I've been having a real hard time troubleshooting. It BSODs often times during boot-up. I went through the obvious things, like RAM, PSU, CPU over heating, etc by substition. Nothing helped. I even swapped hard drives, no dice. So I figure it has to be motherboard. I've updated the firmware to the latest rev. Reset BIOS defaults to fail safe and optimized, still same problem. The really strange thing it only does it during boot. If I can get the OS to load, it's stable. I can run benchmarks, play a game of Doom3, surf the web for hours, no problems. Restart, BSOD. Sometimes it gets so bad I give up and can't use the machine. I have a duel boot system with XP Pro and XP 64-bit. Both OS's have this issue, but the XP Pro more so for some reason. I even tried a dfferent hard drive with an OS which has been stable in another machine for over a year, same problem. I was starting the process of pulling the motherboard for RMA when I realized I still had the firewire port attached via pin connectors, not a plugin. Figuring I could have crossed a data line to a power line or something stupid, I decided it needed more testing before paying shipping for an RMA. I also defraged the hard drive with the 32 bit OS which was badly fragmented for a brand new install for some reason. This seemed to help a lot, but it still BSODs sometimes during boot. I'm just really puzzled. MEMTEST runs fine on the system which also checks L1 and L2 cache on the processor which I thought might be an issue. I would really like to know what is causing this. Even if it is the motherboard, I should be able to figure out what area of the board is having the problem. And if it is a flakey motherboard, while only BSOD during boot?  One other note of interest, I uinstalled the nvidia drivers (latest as of 5/6/05) and reinstalled drivers which were supplied with the motherboard. Although I have only rebooted a few times since doing this, it hasn't BSODed since.
Questions I would like to have answered...
Q: Are the latest drivers from NVIDIA ok to use with this MSI board?
Q: Does New Egg sell refurbished junk?
Q: Are MSI motherboard high quality or just a bunch of hype?
Q: Has anyone ever heard of a machine that only BSODs during boot but passes all hardware tests with flying colors?

  • Ipod crashes windows (blue screen of death)

Hi all. A bit of background info:
A couple of months ago the hard drive crashed on my friends computer. They had to reinstall their OS. Thankfully they had made backups of most everything and were able to get most things reinstalled successfully.
Now they are using a 15g ipod connected through a firewire port on an HP laptop. They do not have a USB adaptor, so gotta go with the FW.
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
I know this is vague information, but any pointers on how to proceed in troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated, thanks

    hi Frostine!
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm checking on:

can you get that information for us from their PC?
