Blue Screen Of Death on iPhone plugin: NOT caused by Logitech or HP

Hi,
Like many posters who have posted throughout 2009, my Windows XP computer crashes consistently every time I plug in my new iPhone. I am currently totally unable to use iTunes to connect to the iPhone.
I have spent more than 8 hours trying ALL the causes listed on Apple's website. It is NOT those. I do not have a Logitech Camera or an HP Scanner or anything else listed there. Below you can see a complete list of what I have and what I have tried.
It is very clear from other posts that Apple's usbaapl.sys driver still has bugs/conflicts that Apple has not yet identified. Let's get to work figuring out what the problem is!
I would appreciate any suggestions or pointers from other members, but please do review the details below before you post.
I am technical and would be happy to provide further info or try suggested registry changes, drivers, etc.
Details:
Every time I plug in my iPhone 3G, my Windows XP Desktop computer Blue-Screens in the Apple-provided usbaapl.sys driver (which is installed by the iTunes Apple Mobile Device Support installer component) within seconds, whilst Windows Plug and Play is loading the "Apple Mobile Devices" driver. Windows plug-and-play never makes it to the "imaging device" device. It crashes within 0-5 seconds of plugging in the device.
The same iPhone can successfully work with iTunes on my friend's Windows XP system, so the problem is not with my iPhone; it is with the Apple iTunes software.
There is some problem with interaction between iTunes on my Windows XP computer and my iPhone.
I have iTunes 8.2.1.6 with Windows XP sp3.
I have already tried ALL of the suggestions at:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2280
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1502
In particular
- I do not have a Logitech camera, either built-in or plug-in.
- I unplugged AND uninstalled all the drivers for
- my printer (which is a Canon i560)
- my scanner (which is Canon CanoScan LIDE 25)
- my USB hub/card reader (IOGEAR GUH284R)
- my webcam (Creative Webcam Pro)
- I actually unplugged ALL USB devices first, including the mouse and the USB hub, rebooted, and it still blue-screens when plugging in the iPhone directly to the computer's USB port.
- I used to have an HP PrecisionScan Pro, and so I also uninstalled all drivers for all old hardware (not just the HP scanner), and rebooted. Still blue-screens when plugging in the iPhone.
- I have tried all USB ports of the computer, including directly plugging into them without any USB hub. Still blue-screens.
- I completely uninstalled iTunes, QuickTime, and Apple Mobile Device Support, rebooted, verified that usbaaap.sys was gone from system32/drivers, then reinstalled iTunes 8.2.1.6 -- still blue-screens
- When I re-installed iTunes, I had disabled my computer's firewall and anti-virus as an Apple tech had suggested, but this didn't help -- still blue-screens.
- I also tried the hack, suggested on the internet, of installing Apple Mobile Device Support from iTunes 7.7.1 on top of iTunes/QuickTime version 8.2.1.6. I verified that I was in fact getting a different usbaapl.sys but -- still blue screens.
- I verified that if I delete the usbaapl.sys driver, plugging in the iPhone does not blue-screen (though of course I cannot use it either). The blue screen of death that appears also contains the word usbaapl.sys. The crash is definitely in that driver. I understand that Apple and Logitech say the "real problem" is in another driver, but as mentioned above, I have eliminated everything on the list in Apple's support suggestion, and I still blue-screen. I even blue-screen with Apple's version 7.7.1 usbaapl.sys driver.
- I verified that my PC has the latest chipset drivers and USB 2.0 drivers. My PC has a 2.8 GHz P4 processor with an ABIT BD7II-RAID motherboard. It has an Intel 845E chipset with Intel 82801DB (ICH4) I/O USB controller. I have never had any other problems like this with any other USB device on this computer. My problem is unique to iPhone.
- I saw on the internet that in 2007 there was an iTunes blue-screen crash that resulted if the iPhone had any Photos on it. So I deleted all the photos on my iPhone. Still blue-screens.

lsemprini wrote:
Yes, as mentioned in the OP, it says usbaapl.sys on the blue screen, and removing the driver avoids the bluescreen (but of course also prevents the iPhone from working with iTunes). Interestingly, when removing the usbaapl.sys driver, the imaging side of the device actually works with my computer (i.e., I can get the Photos stored, which comes via an alternate driver interface). The problem is REALLY isolated just to the Apple iTunes interlink code in usbaapl.sys.
I'd like to emphasize and clarify this point a little more as I think it may be the key symptom for separating my problem (and that of other posters, I'd imagine) from the "standard Logitech conflict" problem:
With the bug I am reporting, I plug in the iPhone, and Windows pops up a plug-and-play bubble for "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver," which is usbaapl.sys (you can verify this with 100% certainty by searching for usbaapl in regedit). The blue screen occurs for me during this phase (sometimes an instant after the bubble pops up)!
If I disable usbaapl.sys by removing the driver, Windows gets past "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" (happily failing to report any error even though it has not loaded the driver, sigh) and goes on to an "imaging" device (I think it might have said "iPhone camera" or "Imaging Device;" I can check again if it's important), which succeeds to load, and I can access pictures stored on the iPhone using the standard Windows Scanner and Camera Wizard tool, which I think uses the WIA API.
So my bug differs from the "standard Logitech conflict" in that it has NO relation to whether or not I have Photos on the iPhone, and if I disable the buggy usbaapl.sys driver, I AM able to access photos on the PC.
In most of the bug reports I saw for the "standard Logitech conflict" problem, users only experienced crashes when the camera had one or more Photos on it, and it appears (though other bug reports are not clear) that the system crashes just after Windows attempts to load the "imaging" driver for the iPhone. My guess is that those users got through "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" with no problem and crashed on the "imaging" driver.
Can someone at apple please post an engineering bug on this issue?
That way we can get a list of technical questions from the engineers that need answering so that we can really stomp this bug for good. I can also volunteer to try out debugging versions of the drivers and collect log files, if needed. I am a systems software engr with Windoze experience so I can probably help expedite the debugging process.
I want to get this fixed and I'm sure many posters do also!

  • How to fix the Blue Screen of Death for iPhone 5S?

I have an iPhone 5S and I never got water on it, dropped it, or inflicted any kind of damage upon it. But one day when I turned it on it kept getting this blue screen and then restarting CONSTANTLY. This is referred to as the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Does anyone know how to actually fix this problem besides just restoring the phone (I already tried that.)

    Hi ..
If you restored the iPhone to factory settings and it still won't startup correctly, make a reservation at a Genius Bar.

  • SL510 Blue Screen of Death in Win 7

Using a brand new Lenovo SL510 laptop running Win 7 Pro SP1 (Model 2847, System Type x64-based PC
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6670  @ 2.20GHz, 2201 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date LENOVO 6JET88WW (1.46 ), 04/01/2011, SMBIOS Version 2.5), I experienced serious problems with Blue Screens of Death involving the built-in Intel wireless card.
I was attempting to connect through an ad hoc network to another, older Thinkpad T42 (running WinXP), whose dialup modem I need at the moment for Internet access (wireless access in my current location is flakier than a Crisco pie crust).  The SL510 can see the ad hoc network, and connects to it, but most of the time cannot access the Internet through the modem.  I'm confident that the modem on the T42 has been properly shared through ICS, since three cell phones and a MacBook are quite capable of reaching the Internet through it.  Only the SL510 fails to connect.  Most of the time.  I've managed a working connection twice, but whenever the SL510 goes into power saving mode, the connection to the ad hoc network drops and never returns.
I've tried both the Lenovo Access Connections utility and Windows Network and Sharing Centre to connect to the ad hoc network.  With Access Connections, I see the ad hoc network in the display shown under the "Connect to the Internet" tab, click its icon and press "Connect", then enter the network key (set up under WEP-64).  The Location field then shows the ad hoc network display with a green region progressing across the background.  Two windows then open (behind Access Connections...I have to dig them out): one titled "Set Network Location" asking me to choose Home, Work or Public network configurations, the other titled "Access Connections" asking "Would you like to keep this connection as one of your locations" and showing the ad hoc network name in the box labelled "Location Name:").  In each case I've selected "Home" as the network configuration (generating another window confirming "The network location is now Home") and "Save" for the "keep this connection".
At any point from here, I will see the blue screen of death, but it's not immediate.
If the BSoD doesn't hit early, I will have time to try to connect to the Internet.  First, though, I try to change the power configuration so the wireless card will not be turned off.  By switching to "Advanced" mode in Access Connections, I select the "Wireless Settings" tab and through the "Settings" button of the "4. Advanced Settings" field, select the "Maximum Performance" Power save mode.  When I click OK to exit the Edit Profile dialog box, a popup titled "Access Connections" appears complaining "DHCP IP configuration is not supported for ad hoc connection.  Use static IP configuration".  Access Connections even obliges me somewhat by selecting the "Additional Settings" tab and checking the "Override TCP/IP and DNS defaults" box, with the only actionable box being "Settings" for that choice.  I open those settings, and under the assumption that I'm supposed to provide my own IP address, I enter 198.168.0.2 with a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
That makes my original ad hoc network connection vanish from Access Connection's "Connect to the Internet" display, but it still has my ad hoc network location next to a "Connect" button, so I try that.   Once again I'm asked to select a location for my network, but this time the network name is suffixed with a "2".  In previous efforts I've found this continues with "3", "4", etc.  In some cases, I can click "Home" network all I want but Windows ignores me.  In other cases I get confirmation that I've selected a "Home" network.
However this works out, I try IE9 to see if I can reach the Internet.  In two cases this has worked (for hours...once it works it works fine), but most of the time this fails and I get the "Diagnose Connection Problems" screen.  When I ask for that diagnosis, Windows Network Diagnostics tells me the problem is I haven't configured my ad hoc network for automatic configuration and offers to fix that for me.  I select "Apply this Fix".  Network Diagnostics sometimes says it's fixed the problem, but usually finishes complaining it could only "Detect" manual connection to my ad hoc network and that there's a problem with my wireless adapter or access point.
At this point I often get a frozen system or BSoD.  When I don't, I've tried repeating these steps, but nothing reliably gets me a connection.  A lockup or BSoD is all that ever awaits.
This is rather disconcerting considering that a MacBook and three cell phones can accomplish blindfolded what a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad equipped with Microsoft's latest and supposedly best OS crashes on, but "surprised" is not one of the adjectives I'd apply here.  I would apply "grateful" if this description registers with someone who has suggestions that might get me through this.
    Thanks for your help.

i have the exact same computer runing winxp 32bit sp3 and it works fine with out any viruses but it's maybe that the hardware is the plobem or if you have any software you might want to disable it and use the Thinkvantage Access Connections and when i ever close the computer lid it stops the wireless adapter and when i turn it back on its not connected is there any way to disable it or stop it from doing that?

  • My iPhone will not turn on after a yet another blue screen of death. Please help!

As mentioned above, my phone will not turn on after a yet another blue screen of death. All of a sudden it turned off, and it wouldn't turn on for quite some time, even after I plugged it in the charger. It wasn't long after the screen turned on, but it only displayed a bright black. I decided to turn it on and off a few times. Nothing worked.
I have also tried to call the phone from another one. It was as if the phone was simply off.

    Hello ZarinaUrum,

  • Iphone 5S crashing after 8.3 update blue screen of death

I have an iPhone 5S which is 90 days out of warranty.  I updated to 8.3 and the first issue I noticed was my music app.  When I play music it doesn't start off from the last song I played - I have to choose my songs again and restart my shuffled playlist.  Last week out of nowhere my phone crashed but it was at 80% battery.  The screen went black, then blue, then tried to reboot.  It "reset" itself within a few hours.  Next day I accessed the App Store and it crashed again.  It has since crashed several more times using Facebook, email, turning it off...very frustrating.  I brought my phone to VZW and they said it was a software issue.  I then went to the Genius Bar and they said without restoring the phone and reinstalling ios, they have no way of knowing if it's software or hardware.  The phone crashed as the tech was looking at my phone so he excused himself, went to the back and came back with a second opinion  "it's definitely a hardware issue and since you are out of warranty, you'll have to buy a new phone for $549".  WHAT?!?  So wait, you JUST told me that you wouldn't know if it was a hardware issue until the phone was restored so how did you magically surmise this?  Then to tell me there is NOTHING that can be done and if I wanted to restore from a backup, I wouldn't be guaranteed that all of my content would be restored to my phone OR there is a possibility my phone would be wiped clean and not restorable at all.  Nice try and scare tactic.  I left Apple with a phone stuck on the blue screen of death.  I went back to VZW and they said its definitely not a hardware issue and even if it were, Apple is the company to seek, not them - they are just my carrier.  I am so fed up with Apple.  Every update and phone I've had with them has had issues.  I don't know why I continue to be their customer.  If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Sorry, what i wrote was wrong and i can't edit it again now
Here's what I was actually meant to say,
    Hi
You could try basic trouble shooting, that's what everyone usually suggests first but it that fails to work then it is a hardware issue.
Did it start crashing after you installed or or got rid of an app? Oh and has it happened before on any other IOS?
In my opinion you should email Apple explaining the issue and they might be able to help you or tell you it plain and simple that your phone is broken

  • Blue Screen of Death when calling skype on iphone/...

Every time i call a person on skype on iphone or s6 (i think any smartphone) my computer crashes and causes blue screen of death. i have windows 8.1 running and this also happened on win 8. i have tried uninstalling, clean installing, deleting all old files of skype and then installing but nothing has worked.
on aside, when i get a call from another desktop skype as well, invariably, i cant connect the call at first attempt. clicking on accept does nothing and it will continue rining. even clicking on reject does not work after. the only option is to kill skype from task manager and then restart it. it then works fine for first call i make. it then has similar issue on later calls. not neccessarily the 2nd call. its regular but also random in nature.
i have not idea what is the problem. do you?

Your Realtek camera drivers are crashing.  Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your video card and camera.  If the problem continues to occur update the camera drivers to the generic Microsoft camera drivers that come with the OS.  Steps on how to update to those drivers are covered in the below graphic:

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

  • Blue screen of death when disconnecting iPhone from computer

So I bought the iPhone and even though I own a Mac I decided to connect it to my work PC which happens to run Windows XP. Everything worked great until I took a picture with the iPhone. As soon as I connected the iPhone, the computer crashed with a blue screen of death. So I looked it up on the forums here and found the article that talks about what COULD be the issue. What Apple is saying with that article basiclly is that this is "your" problem and not theirs so good luck trying to find which one of the 50 drivers that I have on my machine causes the issue. I tried to fix it by updating the drivers that they recommend and the problem is still there. Fine, I will not take pictures with the iPhone.
And then yesterday out of the blue (no pun intended) iTunes gave me an error message when I connected the iPhone, I didn't pay any attention to it and dismissed it only to find out that now every time I remove the iPhone from the computer, it crashes it with a blue screen of death. So now I can't sync the iPhone at all! How much more unsaved work am I going to loss because of this product?
On a personal note, I am a huge fan of Apple's products but I am extremely upset about this. Not only did Apple create a sloppy software implementation, they are making it look like it's a Windows problem. None of the other products that are installed on my machine cause my computer to crash like that, and if I do have an outdated driver (which I doubt!) then the developers of those products have found a way to deal with them WITHOUT crashing!
    Please advise

ok. first I couldn't log in with my previous nickname (not sure why) so I created a new one. Anyways, thank you for your reply and I'm sorry for coming off like jack it's just that losing your data three times will do that to you. I will tunnel my anger back at Microsoft I guess.
In any event, I went back and took a look at my drivers and didn't find any Lexmark or Logitec in there, however I decided to remove the built-in camera driver that came with the laptop and that seemed to work (it turns out that Logitec makes that camera!). I also moved the USB cable to a different port on the computer and now I don't get the blue screen when I disconnect the iPhone.
Thanks again for your help, it seems like I am safely syncing again

Every time i call a person on skype on iphone or s6 (i think any smartphone) my computer crashes and causes blue screen of death. i have windows 8.1 running and this also happened on win 8. i have tried uninstalling, clean installing, deleting all old files of skype and then installing but nothing has worked. on aside, when i get a call from another desktop skype as well, invariably, i cant connect the call at first attempt. clicking on accept does nothing and it will continue rining. even clicking on reject does not work after. the only option is to kill skype from task manager and then restart it. it then works fine for first call i make. it then has similar issue on later calls. not neccessarily the 2nd call. its regular but also random in nature.  i have not idea what is the problem. do you? skype version 7.5.0.102here is the summary of BSoD last night Fault bucket AV_rtsuvc!Unknown_Function, type 0

I have an iPhone 4 and downloaded all my iTunes music to it.  Now when I connect it to my laptop I automatically get the "blue screen of death", does anyone have any insight into this problem?

This will happen if you have photos in your camera roll and an out-of-date scanner or webcam driver. See this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1502

  • Who knows how to fix iphone 5s blue screen of death and itunes error 4013?!

    Hi
Last day, dec 14th, a blue screen of death appears on my iphone 5s, aparently because I was installing facebook app.
After that, the iphone remains restarting over and over non stop, until the battery shutoff.
I try to press home and power/sleep buttons for 10 secs, but stil continuous with the blue screen.
After that, with battery charged, I tried to hold the home button and simultaneously connect to an usb cable (the cable is in perfect conditions) to start itunes.
Its worked, but now, everytime shows an itunes message: error 4013, "the iphone cannot be restored".
    What can I do now?!
    Thanks

    Hi Tks777,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you see an "error 4013" when you try to restore your iPhone, try these troubleshooting steps:
    Error 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, and 4016
After you perform each step, try to restore your device.
    Restart your computer.
Disconnect all your USB devices from your computer and connect to another USB port.
    Use a different USB cable.
    Uninstall third-party security software.
Try restoring using an alternate computer.

  • Portege R100 - Random Blue Screen of Death (IRQL not less or equal)

    Hi,
I've been getting random "Blue Screen of Death" screens in the last few weeks. The error is "IRQL not less or equal" and it's performing a memory dump every time. If I get the error and try restarting the laptop after, I usually get the same "Blue Screen of Death" screen when booting.
I didn't install any new hardware lately. Last upgrade was about a year ago; upgraded the memory. I've tried replacing the RAM with a spare one I had and I was still getting the same error.
I didn't install any new software in the last weeks that would coincide with this error.
I'm monitoring the CPU temperature and I doesn't go higher than 48 deg Celcius.
I'm not an expert but I would assume this is purely an hardware problem ? Since I rarely hear the CPU fan, I thought it could be the CPU overheating.
But even after making the CPU fan run at 100% using a freeware called "Speed Fan" I was still getting the same random "Blue Screen of Death" screen.
I would really appreciate any feedback and help. I really like my R100 and would like to fix it.
    Mark.

Hello, I have a Portege R500 and I am also too having this error message. I was getting a blue screen when loading the pc advising of a memory dump issues.I ahve replaced the ram inside the laptop and this has failed to resolve the issue. I am now having the error, IRQL not less or Equal everytime. I have run a memtest86 scan and this did show up possible memory issues. SO I have replaced the memory chip again. Still showing up as memory issues.
You have mentioned this could be a cpu or memory controller. If this is the memory controller can this be replaced? or would a motherboard replacement be the best option?
I have not tried a re install of windows 7 32 bit as yet, As the memtest86 program has identified possible memory issues. Please can some one advise if replacing the cpu and possible memory controller would resolve this. Memtest log available if wanted.
    Regards
