Blue Screen of Sadness

What's with the blue screen freeze? I can only run my imac in safe mode. Looked at other posts but didn't get any answers provided by Apple support. I honestly can't believe that this computer is starting to go, it's less than 2 years old! Your told that you pay extra for Apple because of the quality? Any help would be great!

I suspect that Leopard has somehow become corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. Please carefully read Apple's article that explains how to troubleshoot the problem in Blue Screen on Startup.
If you continue to have problems make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP, bring the original Install Discs with you and you can get assistance re-installing OS X.

  • Hp Blue Screen sad face Unmountable Boot Volume and Automatic reoair loop error

Someone Please help.I have an hp laptop that refuses to work. The screen stays on the automatic repair screen until it fades to black.I have tried to do a system recovery with f11, but all it does is bring up the blue screen with a sad face for a few seconds before resetting back to the auto repair screen again. Before resetting, it said that I had an unmountable boot volumeon the blue screen.(had to take picture because it cuts off before showing me the full error message.)
    here are my computer specs:
    Hp pavilion g7-2269wm
    AMD Qaud-Core A8-4500M Accelerated Processor
    500BG Hard Drive
    6144MB DDR3 SDRAM
Windows 8(Don't remember if i upgraded to windows 8.1 before problem)
Also purchased hp recovery cds, but even after trying to boot from recovery cd, it stays on a black screen.

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance  you have a 500GB hdd so you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

  • Blue Screen of Death -- Datebook gone, Addressbook in danger

Having some major addressbook/datebook issues with HotSync. I am using a Handspring Visor (the original, old model), Palm Desktop 4.0.1, Windows XP Home. I have not updated any of the hardware/software lately.
A couple days ago, when I synced my Handspring Visor, I got the dreaded "blue screen of death." I rebooted my computer, and then found that the Palm Desktop program wouldn't load. It gave me an error saying the addressbook database could not be opened. The sync log also gave me a series of messages like this:
"Some handheld records were not copied to your PC. Your computer may be full or you may have reached the maximum allowed records on the desktop. To correct this situation, delete some records and perform a HotSync operation again." (Below, I've pasted in the full log from the last couple days so you can see exactly what I mean.)
This morning, I synced the device again, thinking that perhaps the addressbook file had become corrupted and that a sync would clear things up. The answer was ... anything but!
I was able to get the Palm Desktop software to reopen by renaming "addresss.dat" to "address.dba." However, two major problems:
    1) The addressbook on my computer is totally blank. There are three files in the "Address" folder with these extensions: .aba, .dat, and .bak. All of them are only 1 or 2 KB in size. However, this isn't a total loss because my addresses seem to be intact on my handheld.
    2) My datebook has lost ALL data I've entered since roughly January 2008. All my previous years of calendar entries seem to be unaffected. This is the scary part because my handheld AND my desktop both have this problem. I tried the solution of renaming the datebook.bak file to datebook.dba (and giving the current file a .old suffix), but that did not fix the problem. Both files are 355 KB in size. I've also tried setting up a new users and copying over both these files one at a time, but that didn't fix the problem either.
Sadly, I was a fool and didn't backup my Palm files after the blue screen of death the other day; I didn't do it until AFTER that second sync this morning where my datebook data got lost.
Basically, I'm pretty sure I'm screwed about the datebook files. However, I would like to make sure my addressbook doesn't get erased from my handheld. Before my next sync, I feel like I should set the HotSync conduit prefs for addressbook to "Handheld Overwrites Desktop," but I thought I'd get some feedback from y'all before I did that. I am also really curious why I'd lose SOME of my calendar data but not ALL of it? That's the weirdest part to me.
Many thanks for any help you could provide.

When you sync the device to Palm desktop a file is created on the first sync with the extension .dat. When you sync the second time the data in the .dat file is copied to the .bak file. The process is cycled in that order. Each time you sync, the files are overwritten. If you sync once and notice the data is gone, don't sync again because the .bak file should have the recoverable data.
When you rename the files to recover your data you need to rename the files in the following order.
Close Palm Desktop, rename the .dat to .old. Next rename the .bak file to .dat. Reopen palm desktop and see if the data is there.
Try this and see if you can recover the data.
Here is a method for saving your data in a seperate location in case you lose data again.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. CLick on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive. Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.

  • BLUE SCREEN ERROR FOR A BRAND NEW DELL STUDIO

    Hi There,
I Just bought a brand new Dell Studio laptop from Best Buy and the first login.. was trying to register my Mcfee AV on it and started dumping the physical memory with blue scree.. So sad.
I had Win7 on it. What could be the issue? Can someone help here?
I have another thing to know, I want to replace this one with a diff. Studio laptop which is available in best buy, I want to avoid the 15% restocking fee. The one I am thinking to replace it with is of light brown color in the Dell laptop link on best buy site on page 2 and this one is a bit costlier than the one I am using it.... Can I replace this one without any restocking non-sense as the current one keeps throwing with blue screen error. Although it doesnt happen everytime i use it but it does come up with blue screen every now and then...
Any suggestion would be appreciated. The Laptop which I currently have is not listed in the Best Buy site now, was there till last week. Dell Studio, i3 processor with 500GB HD & 4 GB RAM.
    Thanks,
    -Rj

You're over thinking this! If you're getting an error of this type and you didn't do anything to the machine besides install McAfee, then bring it to your nearest BestBuy to have Geeksquad look at it or have it returned. You're within the 30 days, right?
There is no restocking fee for defective items. I'm not sure if yours is defective, but speak to the store, I'm sure you will be pleased. Point is, do it now, before more time passes.
I am a Bestbuy employee who volunteers on these boards on my own time. I am not paid for posting here, and you should understand that my opinions are exactly that - opinions. I do not represent Bestbuy in any way.

  • Thinkpad T440p get blue screen on windows 8.1 on booting

I have T440p and upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8.1 all working fine except the display doesn't look right and when i shut down and boot up again i get windows 8.1 blue screen (sad face) then it works fine.
any advice what is the problem and is it a display adapter problem, although it says in the device manager under display adapters intel HD graphics 4600 and NVIDIA Geforce GT 730M
check the screen shot it looks blurred

    Hi MtGLD,
    Thank you for the reply!
As per the dump file the issue is related to memory it might be graphic memory or with RAM, uninstall both the graphic driver and check the system for some time, if the issue still persists then it could be with system memory, if you have 2 memory in your system then remove one of them and check it.
If you are not getting any error after uninstalling the drivers, then try only with Intel graphic driver for some time and later you can try with Nvidia drivers, suggest you to download the latest drivers from support site.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • Blue screen when connected to pc

when I connect my iPhone 4 via usb to my pc (hp pavilion dv4000, windows xp home), instantly blue screen appears! can anyone help me?

No it does not. I have read about that, but sadly this is not the case for me. The only thing "extra" I had connect was a printer, but I never installed the drivers for it and unplugged it after I read about unplugging other USB devices.

  • Total Blue Screen Crash

Just had a really nasty crash, almost like a kernel panic except that there was no panic message.
Had been running without a restart since installing 10.5.6. Woke up the computer from sleep and plugged in my iPhone 3g (running 2.2). It had apparently synched and was simply charging at the time of the crash (but see below).
Several other applications had been running since the day before, including Entourage, Excel, and Word (all 2004, last updated a few months ago; there is a new 11.5.0 update I have not installed). Had checked mail a few minutes before with Entourage and it was hidden. Word was visible on my external monitor (which has the menu bar), and I was actively using Excel on the Macbook screen, editing a formula in a newly-added column. A few keystrokes back Excel had lost keyboard focus (as happens every five minutes or so, apparently a known problem for Rosetta) but as usual clicking on the desktop and then in Excel brought it back.
Between two keystrokes, total crash. Both screens went pale blue with no messages of any kind, and a few seconds later I found myself at the startup login screen with the generic space background. Login completion seemed much faster than after a full restart, so probably some things were either still running or in a state that let them be used without reloading. But all applications were gone; I checked with Activity Monitor and nothing was running except system tasks and my login startup items. When I restarted Excel it loaded a recovery file that was nearly current; I lost only a few minutes of work.
The console log makes it look as if the trigger may have been a failed iPhone synch operation of some kind. Just after it was logged (with a crash report sent automatically) there are a whole series of termination messages (WindowServer event port death, and a whole series of Exited: Terminated events for various applications.)
Is this a known crash? If not, what's the best way to report it? It could be helpful to the OS team to have my logs. It may be relevant that Paragon NTFS was running (though not in active use), and posted some error messages to the console log during the crash and restart.

This is an old thread, but I'm replying in case anyone can shed more light on the subject -- or if my experience helps.
I've had the same blue screen crash a couple of times with my new MacBook Pro (which replaced a MacBook Pro with an apparent hardware problem about a week ago). Though I had problems with the first machine, I never had the blue screen issue with it (and it had a virtually sound-free trackpad click, which is sadly not the case on the replacement machine). But those are stories for another day.
Anyway, I also have Excel 2004 installed on my machine (I also have Excel 2008 installed). But neither app was open during the last blue screen crash, a few moments ago. I only had a few applications open at the time: Mail, Microsoft Entourage 2008, Firefox, TextEdit and possibly Microsoft Word 2004.
I was composing an email in Entourage when the computer screen simply became blue. A few seconds later I was returned to my desktop. All of my applications had closed, and when I reopened Entourage, I found a recovered version of the email I'd been composing, with just a sentence of recent typing unsaved.
This has happened at least one other time on this machine -- again, just a blue screen that functioned like a very quick restart, with no accompanying kernel panic or error message. This machine also was giving me kernel panics the first few days I was working with it, but something -- a Firefox reinstall, a few trashed prefs and library files -- seems to have resolved that.

  • Blue screen of Death!!! after 7.7.1 install

After installing itunes 7.7.1 I was prompted for a restart. So I restarted my computer and got the blue screen of death. Then it restarted it self again and now it doesn't even show the windows loading bar!
    Swinson Terry

Finally found someone else with the similar issue to myself. I also foolishly allowed the iTunes 7.7 update to download and was prompted to restart. However, unlike you I chose to restart later, but incredibly 2 minutes later I got a brief message advising that the system had to restart and with no further warning my desktop shut down whilst I still had other applications open. Now I get the DOS prompt advising that Windows had an error and I get the Startup options for 'Safe Mode' 'Last Known Good Config.' 'Start Windows Normally' etc, but whichever option I take Windows freezes at the XP logo stage.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a Dell Dimensions 4400.
So far, I have tried loading the Recovery disks, but as I have read in many other discussion threads the iTunes updates seems to have also disabled the DVD and CD/RW drives so I am somewhat screwed! Have now resorted to removing the Hard drive and connecting to my laptop externally in an attempt to reverse changes. Sadly, have not been able to trace any changes to SYSTEM 32 files yet.
Any suggestions from other parties greatly welcomed.

  • Mac OS X stops loading at blue screen

    Hi everyone.
So, my problem is that my Mac wont finish booting into Mac OS X. This is how I got to the issue:
My start up disk warned me it was full, so saved and quit all applications and proceeded to restart.
My Mac rebooted and showed all the proper screens; Gray screen, apple logo screen, and then the light blue screen just before it loads the User's desktop.
THIS is where my mac stops. It refuses to pass this blue screen and instead, the only idication that its still living is the cursor fading in and out, as if its going to load something, but then loops or something.
I have tried the following troubleshooting techniques:
    Restarting the computer
Starting the computer from Leopard Install disk, then choosing disk utility,
then repairing both the disk and the permissions.
After this, I found a topic on here discussing a simillar issue, but the blue screen only lasts 4 to 5 minutes.
Mine has been doing this for at least 15 minutes, at which point I forced it to shut down again.
I'm currently watching it flash between the blue screen and a black console screen ( I held Command + V at startup).
Its at the point where it loops and for the brief moments that I get to see the console info, it says there is some sort of crash. Ive taken a picture and this is what it says:
    Sep 25 25:15:19 DSMAC1 ReportCrash[530]: Saved crashreport to /library/Logs/CrashReporter/PenTabletDriver..date info..DSMAC1.crash using *v or u*id: 0 gid: 0, ev *end screen*
    Sep 25 25:15:19 DSMAC1 ReportCrash[530]: Saved crashreport to /library/Logs/CrashReporter/uc..date info..DSMAC1.crash using *v or u*id: 0 gid: 0, ev *end screen*
Sep 25 25:15:19 DSMAC1 mds[32]: (Error) Server: mdsync launch failed: (lpc/send0 invalid destination port
That is one screen. Another one says this:
    Sep 25 25:15:19 DSMAC1 /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow[023]: Login Window Application Started
Note, DSMAC1 is my computer's name.
It just keeps saying these things over and over, and the loginwindow[###] keeps increasing.
Can someone please help? This is the first time my mac has not worked where I cant fix it. Thanks in advance!
PS: I don't believe I am running Mac OS 10.5.5 (latest build), I can't find out if I am or not, but I'm sure if the update came very recently, then I most likely haven't installed it.

When a disk is full, odd things can happen and usually do. Sadly, your system may be hosed.
Do you have a backup? You will probably need to do an erase and reinstall and then use the backup for your files.
If the backup is a TM backup, then your best solution is to get a new larger HD and use the Leopard DVD to copy your TM backup onto the new HD.
If you do not have a backup then note that some have had success using Ubuntu to copy the contents of the HD onto an external drive, saving most of the files.
You can DL Ubuntu from ubuntu.com and burn it to a bootable "live" CD from which you can access your HD and copy the files.

  • Have a blue screen in safari?

I have a Macbook pro and am getting a blue screen in certain white backrounds in safari and other programs. Backround on desktop seems fine!

    You are welcome.
Despite Apple's incredible wealth, they don't/can't control the Internet. Sadly, this is an ongoing and ever increasing problem. The best defence is knowledge on the part of the user. Any message that pops up while surfing the Internet should ALWAYS be treated with skepticism.

  • Blue Screen, computer not booting, please help!

Apologies if this question has been asked before, however I cannot see it anywhere.
I cannot get my computer to boot at all. When I turn my Macbook Pro on, it has the usual white screen with logo and underneath there is a loading bar. After around 5 mins when the bar is full, it changes to a blank blue screen and there's a circle that just spins round. This is as far as it gets. The blue screen remains.
I've tried carrying out some troubleshooting in the apple manual, I checked that it was a hardware issue but it said no issues found. I've tried to start the computer in safe mode (not sure why) but i'm at a loss.
I would appreciate anyones help if possible, I have only just had my iMac repaired and don't want to pay another small fortune sorting this one to.
    Many thanks

    Hey Princess,
Just went through this same scenario myself. I took it into the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store, and the only solution he knew of was to erase the hard drive (after determining that the hard drive wasn't indeed dying), then reinstall the OS, then for me to go home and update from my Time Capsule to replace files (which I hadn't backed up to for a couple of months *sad face*).
Anyhow - you may want to give the Genius Bar a try.
You could also start up from a DVD/OS to run any repairs using disk utility/First Aid to see if there might be some corrupt files that need replacing and see if that does it.
    Good luck!

  • Blue Screen - unable to continue startup

Yesterday, I updated iTunes and attempted to update to 10.4.8. In the process, I got an error that said it was unable to update. I tried restarting but the boot sequence ended on a blue screen.
I have tried SAFE BOOT - did not work.
Boot Disk - worked fine. I was able to run disk util and it said my volume was fine and nothing needed repairing.
I can boot to Windows and run that fine also. (How sad that I bought a MAC to get away from Windows and now I have to run Windows because my MAC failed me. Bill Gates would probably like this story.)
Anyway, any suggestions would be helpful? I have some very important photos on the MAC side and I DO NOT want to loose those (a recent trip to Zion's National Park with the kidoos.)
Can I use the startup disk and reinstall MaC OS X without erasing my hardrive? Also, is there a utility on the windows side that would allow me to reach over and grab those pictures on the MAC side? I could do this and then reinstall my MAC stuff erasing everything.
Thank you for any input. I was thinking about taking it in to the store but I assume they will not care about saving my data and eventually erase my drive to fix the thing.
    Jeremy
Oh, one more thing. On one of the many help pages about boot problems on the apple support site (which none seem to help me), it mentions that blue screen happens on the "launchd" boot sequence. I don't know what this means but perhaps that might help someone help me. This help page is found here.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303363

    Sorry, maybe I'm just dense
here. If he can't boot into Mac OS X from his HD, how
does he download the Update and install?
    David.Austin.Allen,
Thanks for the heads up, yes, I probably messed up with that one, but it was an afterthought. Saving files from Mac side was said of utmost importance.
Since it booted to the install disc [seems strange that a safe boot doesn't work since HDD accepted repairs ok], I guess I was thinking it was only a matter of time and a little fiddling, after first saving files, until it would restart to the Mac OS. [Startup disc should have been re-selected immediately following use of disk utility.]
The blue screen usually isn't all that big a deal as long as the HDD is ok, which disk repair apparently has confirmed.
Blue screen - My Mac starts up but then stops on a startup screen

  • Blue screen solutions not possible; keyboad commands not working

I am stuck in blue sceen limbo; can't go back to Tiger (wish I could), but can't run Leopard, either. The installation seemed to go smoothly, but all I get is a the blue screen and a sad little cursor with nothing to click. I looked up the official answer (article # 306857), but I am unable to restart in safe mode, as a target disk, or with the installation disk. The ONLY keyboard command that seems to work is the eject button to get the installation disk out. I am going to the "Genius" at my local Apple Store tomorrow, but I am already seething!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may need an Apple wired keyboard (your Powerbook's built-in keyboard is one, if that's where you installed it) to go through the proper boot sequence.
In the future when applying an update, follow these directions, and you shouldn't have more problems*:
