Blue screen on launch - tried all solutions offered in discussions - no joy

Hi
I started up my G5PPC running OSX 10.4 (not sure which version and you'll soon see why). It went to a the grey apple screen, whirs a bit and then gos to a blue screen. I was able to move my cursor. But that was it. Nothing else happened.
I read all the forums and as a result of their collective wisdom did the following. At each stage I rebooted the G5 and got the same result as above with very little variation unless noted below.
I disconnected all externals etc and powered off etc.
I ran Techtool - and all my bits are in working order.
I ran disk utility - repaired permissions and verified disks.
I ran disk warrior - it told me my boot drive had 11 overlapping files but it created a new directory and sorted those out. It looked like I was in business.
However, when I turned the G5 back on I got a 0S9 style graphic of a file and a flashing question mark which Alsoft says means you have to reinstall OSX.
I have a bootable back up of my boot drive so I thought there would be no harm trying that before doing a full restore.
After the first disc of my install discs went in, the G5 unexpectedly rebooted itself and stuck while the fans went crazy.
With my original boot drive now wiped but with no OSX installed, I decided to restore it from my back up via super duper.
Once that was done I tried to reboot - back to blue screen via the grey apple screen.
I tried to boot my G5 from the firewire external drive (which is bootable) which didn't work either.
Both before the restore and after, using my Macbook pro, I set the G5 up in target mode and had a look at my boot drive. It was nearly full for a start so I deleted a lot of unnecessary stuff off it (eg old video rushes - no programme files). There's 50gig free now.
Everything seems to be in tact however and as noted above, none of the software checks (Diskwarrior, Disk Utility, Tech tools) are reporting any problems with the hard drive - like bad sectors or whatever and it has a new clean directory courtesy of DiskWarrior).
Any suggestions about next step?
someone on here got there machine up and running by deleting a the startupservices plist which I did via my mac book pro accessing my G5 via target mode. It worked for them but in my case merely caused the G5 to create a new plist. It still went to blue screen (though I briefly saw a small window which looked like a user default log on window).
I ran disk warrior again. No problems found.

Here is something worth ponder and consideration that not everyone takes to heart:
When a disk utility repair fixes major over lapping extents, figure you are lucky to be able to Preview your drive and back it up.
But then you really should / need to / strong recommendation - REFORMAT.
And then keep your system cloned (emergency, working backup, and always test new updates, patches, releases on a test backup).
Disk Warrior doesn't test files and content fully, it doesn't look for weak spots or marginal bad sectors. And it doesn't know if file is garbage or good, just that the directory points to file.
SuperDuper optimizes directories, skips temp files and logs and things best built on first time boot (and one reason to always do a Safe Boot after cloning or updating).
Disk Warrior, if you option + click on the REBUILD directory button it takes you to a 2nd screen to "scavenge" more thoroughly, which is what I use.
When HFS+ gets low, trouble is the directory can become corrupt in ways that it loses files, data, and pointers to files.
You did a very good job, and more than many or most, it seems there are weaknesses in HFS+ and in tools to find and repair problmems. And getting low on disk space... well, why isn't there a quota system.

I have an Arris TG852 wireless gateway provided by Comcast.  Any suggestions other than the ones posted in the various discussions on this topic? I do not want to pay AT&T $30 per month for 3G access.  I can connect to wi-fi at Starbucks, so it's obviously my home gateway that's the issue. I'm not technically savvy, so please offer solutions in non-technical language.

Tell us what you tried and what happened when you did.
The obvious thing to check, given the details you provided, is whether or not you turned on and configured the wifi in the gateway.

Got my ipad mini. It works perfectly fine until I updated to ios 6.0.2. Now I can't connect to wifi. I've tried every solutions offered in every forums and internet sites but nothing happened. Still ipad cannot connect to wifi. HELP!!!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...

Backing up, Updating and Restoring >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

  • Blank blue screen on logon for all but administrators

    Server 2008 SP2
    Running as a RDS Server.
Domain is a SBS 2008 Domain.
    Following some updates installed over 10 days an issue occured as follows;
RDS Users were getting a blue screen on logon.
SBS Web sites all failed to start.
Issue with the SBS Server was .Net Framework updates corrupting the permissions.
Reset permissions following .Nert repairs and PSS support.
RDS Server having subtlety different issue.
Users need to be local admins on the RDS server to login, otherwise they get a blank blue screen.
Trying to start task manager gets a 0000022 error, task manager application failed to start.
If you leave the user for the screen timeout, you get a 0000022 error, scrsvr.exe application failed to start.
If you log in locally with the user, same issue.
No interesting events in process monitor, process explorer or event logs.
If I watch a user who is not an administrator logon, I see three process running
    taskeng.exe
    rdpclip.exe and
    dwn.exe
Removed AV and seeing some more GPO events logged.
removed the user and placed them in a GPO with no inheritance - same issue.
Enabled UAC - even local administrators were getting a blank logon screen, all except the domain administrator account.
in the process of uninstalling .Net updates.
Anyone got any better troubleshooting I can try?
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
    Thank you for your post.
    From your description,
I see the current issue you are facing is: Windows Server 2008 displays blue screen on logon for all users, except for local administrators.
Please let me know if there is any update. Thanks for your time.
Here I’d like to know that the blue screen showed up after logging into the system, but with no desktop. Right?
Have you tried booting in safe mode? If not, please try it to see if that makes any difference. Based on your description, the issue happens to all users except for the
local admins, we suspect the issue might be GPO restriction related. If we are able to boot in safe mode, then please take the following steps to check the issue:
    1. Delete the following registry key in safe mode after backing it up first:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer
    2. Restart the server to check if the issue is solved.
Please let me know if there is any update after that. Thanks for your time.

I tried all solution but still i am unable to connect to my wifi. It started yesterday when my ipad cant connect to wifi.

It's hard to provide help when your question starts out with, "I tried all solutions" however here is some troubleshooting advice.
If you are having WiFi problems it is necessary to isolate whether the problem is with your network or your iPad. Note: Do NOT consider your network to be blameless if some other devices can connect to it.
First, test your iPad on some other WiFi networks: a friends, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, etc.
If it works well there then the problem is probably with your network. Try restarting your WiFi router by removing power for 30 seconds. If that does not help check for a firmware update for your router. If none exists which corrects the problem consider replacing the router.
If your iPad does not function well on other networks it possibly has a hardware problem. You could try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings to see if that corrects the problem. If not, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple store for evaluation. They can provide a replacement if your iPad is bad.
If you need more help please give the make, model, and version of your WiFi router and how you have it configured.

You may have debris in your headphone jack blocking the sensor.  Try blowing hard on the jack, and inserting/removing your headphones quickly multiple times to clear it.

If you can't find the system discs that came with your computer, use fsck (a command-line utility that may be able to verify and repair a disk)
    To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

  • Desktop Icons have vanished, have tried many solutions offered in forums with no results

I'm at a complete loss as to what to do after searching high and low for answers to this problem.
My desktop icons have mysteriously vanished as I switched it on last night. I had been using it with no issue earlier that day, but for some reason, switching it on last night, I was greeted with a completely clean desktop.
This has happened once before, so I figured simply rebooting the computer (like the last time this occurred) would bring back the icons. No such luck, even after restarting it or shutting it down, and reopening it 15 minutes later. When this problem last occurred, I think I was using Snow Leopard; I'm now running Mountain Lion (if this makes any difference).
I searched a few forums, and tried every solution listed in these topics with absolutely no success. List of things I've tried, as suggested by users on other forums (that seemed to work for people with similar problems):
    Checked to see if the "Desktop" folder was renamed to something else, it wasn't;
    Relaunched Finder several times
Restarted the computer, shut it down for hours and restarted
View>Clean up by/Sort by all tried, nothing happens
Changed the resolution several times, nothing happens
    Quit iTunes, nothing happens
    Verified the disk in Disk Utility, no problems (so repair disk was greyed out);
    Verified the permissions, repaired the permissions successfully, nothing happened;
    Checked Macintosh HD>Users>(username)>Desktop, nothing in the folder (0kb when I check Get Info);
Searched for and tried to remove via Terminal the following preferences: com.apple.finder.plist AND com.apple.FolderActions.plist but they are non-existant on my account OR guest account
Booted in safe mode, still no icons
Logged into guest account, no icons on administrator Desktop (I overrided permissions to see the desktop, and still no icons)..
Tried to "killall Finder" in Terminal, no response.
    I did not recently:
    download any new software, games, etc (with the exception of FluidApp, which was installed 3 weeks ago and frankly I don't see how it would affect my computer weeks later);
connect my MacBook to an external/additional monitor (have never done this, so icons can't be off-screen)
    Additional info:
When in Finder, most functions in my View menu are greyed out. Available options: "Clean Up By", "Sort By", and "View Options". Selecting any of these do nothing.
I checked this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1916) and my Computer Name actually DID contain an illegal character (a dash) so I removed it; however it did not correct my problem even after reboot/logging out and in/relaunching Finder. (I'm running Mountain Lion though, so not sure if this even applies, but it was the closest thing I could find).
Nothing but the contents of the desktop seem to have been compromised. I can open applications, install software, use any application, view/open/access files everywhere else on my computer.
I can save new files on my desktop and they don't disappear.
I can put files from other places in my computer on the desktop and they don't disappear.
I DID do a system update to the latest version of Mountain Lion AFTER encountering this problem, in hopes it would correct the problem somehow, but it did not.
I installed one application in hopes of figuring out a fix after the problem occurred (TinkerTool) but after playing with the options (and in the end, not changing anything) I still have the problem. The "Disable Desktop Features" thing was not checked. I checked it, relaunched finder, and what I put on the desktop disappeared, so I unchecked it and relaunched and they reappeared, but my old desktop did not.
It's seriously as if someone did a "Select All > Delete", and overpassed the Trash bin somehow (because it still has a few items I had put in there previously).
Does anyone have any other suggestions in how to retreive my lost desktop icons? I'm going crazy..

If you have a backup, try restoring your Desktop folder from there.
You should have a Finder and a FolderActions .plist. Have you tried looking in your user library folder manually instead of using Terminal?
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

To start the BIOS setup utility:
    1 Shut down the computer.
2 Press the Novo button and then select BIOS Setup
There should be a tab labelled something like "Configuration" and on that page something like "SATA controller mode".  Select "compatible" and save and exit.

  • Can't get laptop to recognize iPod: tried all "solutions".

I have tried all the solutions here and I still can’t get a single iPod to properly work with my computer. I’ve pretty much come down to the conclusion that the only way I can get an iPod to work is to get a whole new PC.
Granted I have an “ancient” four-year-old Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop with only one USB 1.1 port. However I have updated it and am running with 512MB of RAM, Windows XP Home and have added a Comp USA USB 2.0 PC Card. Through this card I have successfully connected a number of items with no problem.
    • Router
    • Cable Modem
    • Logitech Harmony remote
    • Canon SD450 camera
    • HP laser printer
    • Zen Micro MP3 player
    • Flash drives
Some items are USB 1.1 and some are 2.0. But I’ve had as many as four items running at the same time and had no problem.
However, I can’t get a single friggin’ iPod to work properly!
When I connected the first iPod to the USB2.0 ports on the card (after installing the software) the system would not recognize it. I let it charge overnight and came back to an iPod that was probably pretty close to catching on fire. The screen was bright white and the whole thing was so hot I could barely pick it up. I returned that one.
With the second one I have a little more success. After uninstalling the iPod software I went through a “fresh” install like I had a new one. The computer recognized the second one so far as to assign it a drive letter. However the iTunes and iPod updater software would not recognize the iPod being attached.
Based upon Apple support articles, information from this and other iPod forums I tried all of the following “solutions”:
    • Tried all four USB 2.0 ports and the one USB 1.1 built-in port: no luck.
    • Restarted the laptop
    • Reset the iPod
    • Uninstall and reinstall software 4 times
    • Went into the hardware power settings for the USB ports and changed the settings
    • Unistalled and reinstalled all hardware.
    • Download and install new USB drivers
    • Checked: I have latest version of iTunes
    • iPod service is running
    • reinstalled COM interface
    • removed iTunes
    • Emptied temp directory
    • Clean up iTunes installer file
Still nothing. Couldn’t even get the iPod to power uo.
Went back to the Apple store to exchange after they couldn’t get it to power up.
As recommended I tried a few other USB 2.0 PC cards that were on the approved list. Including the expensive ($50) Belkin card that Apple claimed had been tested to work okay with the 5th gen iPod.
    The only options I see
    • wipe the hard drive, reinstall XP and all my software an starting fresh
    • buy a whole new “current’ desktop PC.
    So am I just pooched?

Granted I have an “ancient” four-year-old Dell
Inspiron 4000 laptop with only one USB 1.1 port.
However I have updated it and am running with 512MB
    of RAM, Windows XP Home
So you installed Windows XP Home but did you install SP2!!!
Remember Ipods require SP2 If you have Windows XP Home Edition!!!!

  • Black Screen with Cursor (Tried most solutions)

To save your time and mine, I’ve tried all options in “press f8” and “recovery disk”. Over the past 3 days, I read almost all threads, videos, articles, and official MS help containing any mention of this problem. I also applied many commands, created few
“SystemRescue CDs” and “Kaspersky Rescue 10” on a usb drive. I follow instructions very well, and have never been stumped by a windows problem like this before. If someone solves this, you are a wizard!
Nothing has worked so far, but I really want to figure this out and not ‘reinstall’. It appears to be a simple and popular problem: “Right after Win 7 boot Logo, I get black screen with white mouse cursor,
no matter if I boot in safe mode, last good configuration, or normal startup”, but all the solutions that worked for most people are not working for me.
TL;DR: (answers to any of the 7 questions in the end will help me out)
Custom System: Win 7 64 bit (updated consistently), 4gb ram, Quad Core 2.66, 64GB SSD (Crucial M4) and 4 hard other drives. Only windows installations/updates have been installed onto the SSD, no other programs. Only 1 OS has ever been installed
on this computer. Never dual booted.
Mobo: Asus Maximus Formula. GPU: AMD HD7870LE
    2014-04-19
I haven’t installed or downloaded any programs in the past 3 weeks, and did not notice anything unusual up until this incident.
In the morning the computer went into hibernation because I was away, it couldn’t wake up (usually happens), so I turned off the power supply. Turned it back on, and computer resumed, I was concerned as it may have run out of hard drive space on my 64GB
SSD (4GB free), but it booted fine.
Later during the day, I decided to restart the computer, and as it booted up again, it went into “start up repair”. I let it run and restart, and it arrived at the dreaded Black screen with mouse cursor, of death, right before logon screen.
Symptoms while on this black screen.
Ctrl alt del doesn’t work, power off doesn’t work, cursor can move, pressing ‘shift’ many times doesn’t bring up the ‘sticky key’. No task manager.
Hard drive is not loading anything, just idle.
Computer falls asleep after 15 minutes or so, and can wake up back to this black screen, so it remembers my power settings
Safe mode loads the drivers fine, but also gets stuck on the same ‘black screen with cursor’ forever
I tried every option in the ‘advanced boot’, including ‘safe with command prompt, safe with networking, last known configuration, etc’
Last known configuration, and all of the above, all boots to ‘black screen with cursor’, this means windows believed it booted fine the last time, so it remembered this configuration. That’s because all the drivers loaded without issue. While loading
Safe Mode, I can see windows loading all the drivers ok.
No restore or backups (I know, I do not deserve to live, lesson learned)
I tried all applicable functions from the ‘recovery cd command prompt’, bcdedit, bootrec, diskpart, and still couldn’t get it to boot.
Commands applied in Elevated Command Prompt from Installation DVD: (very careful with backups and overwriting)
Diskpart -> list volume, tells me that 100mb is system reserved, the other 59GB has no label, and is a different partition
Bootrec -> scanos, tells me that I have 0 windows installations, used fixboot, /fixmbr, /rebuildmbr, all successful. Mounting the drive later on RescueDisk’s TestDisk shows no problems with either partition.
BCDedit: shows both boot manager and winloader to be on the same drive, and I referenced it with a typical BCDedit enum output, and nothing is out of place.
I went into Regedit by typing “regedit” in command prompt in Win7 recovery cd, and confimed that ‘Shell=explorer.exe’ under:
    HKEY_local machine/software/microsoft/WindowsNT/Currentversion/winlogon.
Sfc /scannow couldn’t run due to “Pending repairs/restart”
    So I used: SFC.EXE /scannow /offbootdir=c:\  /offwindir=c:\windows
Which ran and repaired some errors the first time. I ran it more just to make sure, with restarts in between, it gave me
Win resource protection did not find any integrity violations.
So the system files appears to be fine and not corrupted.
Bootrec /scanos does not detect any windows installations. “0 Windows installations identified”, yet “Diskpart -> Detail Disk” and bcdedit both detects the windows directory.
    From windows recovery disk:
    Startup Repair diagnosis: (Show Details)
    All tests completed successfully
Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully
It seems that the system and the OS boots successfully, and windows believes it boots successfully (that’s why last know good configuration gives me the black screen also, and Win Startup Diagnosis all says it booted successfully”
It’s the second before it enters into the logon screen, the black screen and movable cursor appears, and hangs here forever. What programs load during this step, and how can I find out this info? Is there a diagnosis tool that allows me to see the programs
as they load during windows start up?
    Other attempts:
Then I read it could be windows using “winresume.exe” instead of winloader.exe, since I have “hiberfil.sys” in C:\windows, so I backed it up and deleted it using SystemRescue.
Another thread said “winevt” bad logs, in C:\windows\system32\winevt were causing this black screen, so I backed it up and deleted that also, and it still won’t boot.
I plugged in the devices that were attached (just 1 ext hard drive, through a 10 port usb hub) that was connected while it went into hibernation on April 19th, and it didn’t help.
The files on that disk and the file system is not corrupt; I tested it by taking it out and docking it on a usb Blax Duet, and my laptop did a scan disc, and it’s fine. The Sfc Scan also shows that it is ok.
I also unplugged all the other sata drives, switched the SSD sata cable around to other sata ports to no prevail.
    So far I know:
Very unlikely that it’s a virus problem, I haven’t installed or downloaded anything this month, scans from Kaspersky 10 rescue disk shows nothing, Farbar scan shows nothing. I also never install anything suspicious, like toolbars or junk. I scan regularily.
Not a driver problem, since I haven’t changed or updated anything. I unplugged all devices, and starting in 640x480 mode also gives the black screen with cursor. Drivers all loaded fine while starting windows and safe mode
Boot files are intact, windows system files are in the right place since windows actually boots into a shell? Both bootloader and boot manager show up in bcdedit enum scans
Not due to system file corruption, since file integrity are confirmed ok by above CMD commands, and windows diagnostic tool, and testdisk.
    My questions:
What could be the cause of this? I didn’t make any changes to BIOS, windows settings, perform any updates, suspicious activities, installations, or crashes, before this. The files on that disk and the file system are not corrupt either, I tested it by
taking it out and docking it on a usb Blax Duet, and my laptop did a scan disc, and it’s fine.
Which program (classpnp.sys? explorer.exe? winlogon.exe?) is being loaded right before “windows logon screen” that would cause it to hang with a black background and cursor?
How can I find out this information? Is there a tool that can record all programs that are being loaded by windows at boot?
I only have access to regedit, elevated command prompt, and I can change files through SystemRescue or Kaspersky recue, how can I get the computer to boot past that black screen with a mouse cursor? The answer seems so close.
From the Rescue Disks, what could I really do to get past the black screen?
Those who are computer technicians could tell me: If I take it to a computer shop or technician, what could they do in a situation like this aside from all of the above? Do they have some ‘next level’ access tools or are they just going to waste my time
and tell me I have to reinstall?
At the very worst, I will obviously reintall. On my 64gb SSD, I didn’t install any important softwares. All my important software installations are on a separate drive. However, will they still work if I did a ‘Inplace Upgrade’ install of windows? Does
    registry get wiped?

    Hi,
Have you tried to take startup repair when booting with the rescue disk?
    Startup Repair
And we'd better bring the PC to the vendors, then take an examination of the hardware health.
How does the Bootrec /scanos show 0 installation identified? We may take a try with chkdsk from command line to check if there are any disk errors:
Run Check Disk from a Command Line to Check for and fix Disk Errors
Please also take a check if the system reserved partition is stay in health:
Understand (and Get Rid of) the Mysterious Small Partition
Another shoot, please try to rebuild BCD:
Use Bootrec.exe in the Windows RE to troubleshoot startup issues
Regarding the repair install, detailed information please take a check with the article below:
How to do a repair install to fix Windows 7
    Hope this may help
    Best regards

Did you read his post at all as it does not look like it.
As to take it to a vendor "Custom System:"" Win 7 64 bit (updated consistently), 4gb ram, Quad Core 2.66, 64GB SSD (Crucial M4) and 4 hard other drives. Only windows installations/updates have been installed onto the SSD,
no other programs. Only 1 OS has ever been installed on this computer. Never dual booted."
As to your other suggestions he has tried them all as have thousands of us out here , all you have to do is search the internet  and you see millions of hits about this.
And glad to see a moderator can mark a non answer as an answer.

My Powerbook G4 (with Snow Leopard operating system) will not boot up, I get a blue screen. I have tried to start up in safe mode by holding down shift key after startup tone, but end up with same result...blue screen. I need important photos and documents of this laptop, Even if I can just get it started up one more time. Need help fast! If you know what to do, please message back.

In the text you say you are using Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard will not operate on a G4 (or any Mac with a PowerPC processor). Leopard OS 10.5 is the max OS for PowerPC processor Macs. Your profile shows OS 10.5.6. What OS are you using (or trying to use)?
Will the PB boot using a systen install DVD?
