Blue screen only & doesn't recognise install CD

Hi,
It's been a bit of a saga so far, so a quick recap:
Had problem with CD stuck in drive and operating system crash. Got CD out and operating system CD in (many thanks), but now it won't re-install. Get through all the process up until point of it trying to Finish Up - then says "there were errors installing the software". Have now tried twice. Really don't want to try a re-install wiping all existing data.
I could not launch some applications and got an error message along the lines of "cannot launch application because of shared file library mirror" or something like that. (Hope this is not a virus). Appleworks and Civ 3 would not launch, Filemaker Pro and Dreamweaver did. Restarted machine, took out battery etc - to no avail. Then machine just had circle turning and then finally nothing but flashing operating system icon. Got help online to get other CD out and put installer one in, but disk repair wasn't able to fix it and very kind online help suggested a directory problem. Made decision to just reformat whole thing rather than play around with retrieving data. Did this last night, but got message that installation unsuccessful - shut down and try again, which I did. However after second unsucessful re-install, got same message. So shut down and restarted and now have only a blue screen. I can still get into firmware and eject the installer CD - so I tried restarting without installer CD and then inserting as well as restarting with - to no avail. I can only now get blue screen. I live some distance from nearest Apple repairer but really need my laptop operational soon. Did I mention I'm working at the moment for a PC repairer - but still flying the Apple flag in the face of this (won't let him open it up to just take a look without knowing anything about it...). And although bought the VERY first Mac ever produced (no disk drive of any kind! and this does show I'm old) and only owned Macs since, and supporting them in workplaces, this is the first major problem I've ever had. But nevertheless, I'm pretty desparate - I'm not anything with hardware/firmware but I do nice (especially visually) things in Filemaker and am now moving to more web-based work and third party hosted data support. If it's stuffed, I have to rethink business plan. Left real job at University in Australia for mid-life working holiday in NZ and have just stayed, choosing to start up a business now from here, so not in strong position to replace. Pls excuse life story - basically laptop is not quite so disposable (and I have loved my Macs, especially the DuoDock if anyone remembers). Very grateful for any assistance.
Steph

Hi John,
Yes I did that both times. The first time I came back into the room and found the spinning circle thing and nothing else happening for some time. I shut down and restarted installation from scratch again with zero all existing data, and then got the error message of unsuccessful installation - shut down, restart. Then restarted to just blue screen.
Thanks again,
Steph

  • Blue screen only after leopard install. HELP!!!!

Here is what I did. I installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro and it booted perfectly. I did the upgrade option so I wouldn't lose my editing and graphics software. I decided to upgrade my Dual 867 MDD, which has a Sonnettech 1.67 processor for mirrored drive door macs. This is where the **** has come in. For the first attempt, I installed the upgrade on the system drive with was only an 80gig drive with 14 gigs left. After I came back in from letting the install go overnight, my computer monitor only showed a blue screen and the mouse arrow. i can move the mouse arrow around which is a good sign. I got frustrated and then took out the 80 gig system drive and replaced it with a carbon copy backup drive of 10.4.11. This replacement drive is a 120gig 7200 rpm PATA drive. I then installed Leopard on that drive, got the success checkmark at the end and rebooted. Again, the blue screen came back with a functional arrow. My only guess is that the low end ATI card (the original that came with the Dual 867's) is somehow flipped or reversed, preventing me from accessing the dock and system functions. I don't know of a keystroke that will flip them. Why would the mouse be functional and nothing else? The card has a HDMI port, albeit one of the older ones that is rounded and not square. At this point, I"m stuck on blue screen with roving mouse.I also could not get the install CD to eject, even when holding the eject key during the restart. I finally got it out. After a third reboot, I got the dreaded error message of death stating to restart. Any suggestions?

where can i get migration assistant? will carbon copy not do? my situation is worse now. i don't know why i forgot to go with archive and install and chose upgrade. life is **** for my g4 now. the new situation is that if i choose archive and install or the clean install option, there is an error message at the end saying the install failed and that there is an error with the disc. I have also seen an error message saying the install failed due to not finding the oxford dictionary something. on top of that, i can't reboot into OS9 because leopord alters or deletes an important extension that the sonnettech processor needs. they sent me the new file and once i overcome these failed install issues i can add that new file. oh well. wonder how vista installs are going?

  • Blue Screen - STOP Error During XP Install

I am trying to install Win XP on my new system and I keep getting a Blue Screen.  It boots off the DVD drive, loads all the initial system files and when it says "Windows Is Starting" it goes to a Blue Screen stating that an error has been detected and Windows has been shut down.

hi, i have found an interesting concern about windows xp and HTT.
the HAL is decided on install, you can install with ht enabled, but if you dissable this in the bios later, your pc will still use multiprocessor HAL which will make the pc run hotter..
this is due to hal is non changeable by the operator and is only configured on install of xp.(HTT dissabled= uniprocessor HAL, HTT Enabled= Multiprocessor HAL)
so you install xp with HT on, and later dissable it due to coruption or what ever.. your pc will still run the HAL MULTIPROCESSOR DRIVERS and no longer enter sleep mode where the cpu will slow down at low useage state causing it to constantly consume power, thus heating the cpu more than when HTT is enabled.lol.
but, there is another twist in this little problem.
windows xp (before sp1 was added) installed all the correct HAL drivers for intel processors, BUT SP1 over writes these with the wrong ones!! namely ntoskrnl.exe
and windows have no fix for this, only a work around. which is
    1. wait for the new service pack.
    2. re-install xp with/ without HTT enabled, which ever you require...
BUT!!! if you have a version of xp, or xp pro with sp 1 on it, it won't matter, because the kernal drivers are wrong..
    how i laugh...
now this doesn't answer my problem of "how the hell do i get xp to run HTT, but it does let me know that microsoft are at the bottom of it all...

  • Blue screen only

Hi. I posted this topic a few minutes ago and it has disappeared, so I will try again in this section. (First time on forum). I have just recharged my phone (E65) and all I'm getting is a blue screen, nothing else. No menu and the on/ off switch isn't functioning. Any suggestions please?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Looks like you might try the 3 button reset so. See instruction below. Note that you will lose all your data when the phone resets unless you have a previous backup with you can restore.
Always remember to backup your phone before performing resets as your data may be lost. Firstly take the battery out for 5 minutes and then replace and see if that makes any difference.
Then try the "3 finger deep reset" which is depress these three keys simultaneously "*" "3" "green phone" and then power on phone whilst keeping those same three keys depressed until you hear start-up tone.
This should ONLY be done if the device doesn't power up normally anymore and it wipes everything in the Phone memory that is not part of the ROM.

  • Mac will not turn on blue screen only

My Imac which is about 3-4 years old just was unplugged without shutting down. It will not statrt up only blue screen. what can I do?

On restart when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key. Hopefully it will see the start-up volume, choose it and restart. Then navigate to System Preferences - Startup Disk and see if your internal HD is highlighted, it should look similar to:
If that doesn't fix it please advise, is there ANYTHING on the screen at all such as a spinning gear, progress bar, or folder with a question mark through it?

  • G5 Power Mac (ppc) boots to blue screen only

Hi, I realize that this is an old machine (10 years, at least) but until a few days ago it was working fine. I use it only for the FCP Suite, which will not run on my new Intel-Based Imac.
Anyway, I was able to boot up from the CD and run both the Disk utility and the Hardware Diagnostic Test. It passed the Hardware test without problems and then the disk utility found a bunch of errors, all of which is fixed (I have run it several times and it now comes up at "ok" everytime.
Still, when I go to boot it up it takes forever and goes through the gray screen, then the blue screen, and does not go past that.
I am stuck. Any ideas about the next steps? Should I use the Firewire Target Disk Mode?
There is another internal hard drive (which also passed all the tests) and I am wondering if I should try to install the system onto that and then try to boot from that. Any ideas about that? And, if I were able to boot from that disk, any ideas whether or not I would be able to then see the primary hard drive to copy off the project I was in the middle of when it went down?
I know I have a lot of questions, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Debbie

    Hi BDAqua,
Many thanks for your thoughtful reply. I have done as you said—actually, I tried it right after I read your post—and the wheel is still spinning on the blue screen, which can't be good! It may be doing something, as previously it would go to the blue screen and eventually lose the spinning wheel, but still...
So, I had also done a reset of the PRAM and, I think, the SMU. What's next, do you think? What do you think of the idea of installing a system on the second hard drive...too risky? And is there anything I should be vacuuming, or looking at inside the whale? I saw some others had recommended that for other reasons...
    Again, many thanks,
    Debbie

  • Computer will not start up, get blue screen only

When I try to boot from a newly cloned and installed hard drive on my PowerBook, I only get a blue screen with progress wheel. I read in one of the forums that this may be caused by an incompatible Startup Item. There is one Startup Item listed that I am not sure about called "System Events." Is this necessary and can it be deleted? It is found in /system/library/core services/system events. Another is Iomega Driver, buried deep the system library. These items do not appear in the list on my G4 FW800. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Am using the latest version 3.1. Am really concerned as to the Startup Item "System Events." What is it, what does it do, is it a necessary Startup Item and can it be deleted from the list?
If all else fails, I will zero out the drive and try to re-clone. However, I just went through this on a WD 250GB drive and had nothing but problems. The clone went well, but after 2 weeks of running, folder icons started to disappear and finally the drive would not re-boot. Got many Kernel Panics. Testing the drive, I got and error message saying that the drive had "Invalid Key Lengths", "Volume Check Failed" and "The underlying task reported failed on exit." Don't have a clue as to what this means.
For this latest problem, I am using a Seagate 160GB ATA drive, purchased new.

I don't have a similar machine to look at so this is a bit of a guess:
Per page 30 or your user's guide http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_g400sg400stouchg500sg500stouchg405sg505s_ug_e...:
How can I start the BIOS setup utility?
To start the BIOS setup utility:
    1 Shut down the computer.
2 Press the Novo button and then select BIOS Setup
There should be a tab labelled something like "Configuration" and on that page something like "SATA controller mode".  Select "compatible" and save and exit.
I'm not certain this will fix your problem, but it's worth a try.

  • Blue screen appears & Information about Archive & Install option.

Hey, i am using Mac 10.5.8
Yesterday it was working perfectly fine.
But after dinner when i tried to open, it dont go beyond blue screen
I have tried disk utility using original MAC OS X DVD, while verifying it says disk appears to be ok, but its says some alterations in disk pernission, i have clicked on repaire disk permission, and after that tried to start, but still it stuck at that blue screen.
Its getting that grey apple screen, then further going to that blue scren, but dont go beyond that.
Now i want to know if anyone have solution to this problem. Please help me
Also want to know, if i go for "Archive & Install " option, will that keep my data or erase my data. As i have arround 2-4 GB important data.
Please respond to this as soon as possible, i need it to be fixed urgently.
    Thanks in advance.

Once the system is up and running, you should keep a back up of very important data.
    You can burn a DVD.
That is why i am asking, will archieve and install keep my data safe?? All my documents and all??
Normally data should be safe after Archive and Install.
That is my experience. But there is no guarantee.
    Best.

  • I get the blue screen whenever I try to install the bootcamp drivers in windows 7

I just recently installed windows 7 home on my 2011 imac useing bootcamp.
Everything seemed to install fine however whenever I try to run the bootcamp drivers in windows to get my mouse and wifi and all that to work I get a blue screened.
    Any Ideas?
Ive followed the exact instructions from the manual for OSX and nothing seems to work.

Question: Does the Windows disk that you are using have SP2 (Service Pack 2)? In other words, is your version of Windows a FULL version (and not an upgrade version) of XPSP2 Home Edition?
Having SP2 is a requirement to have XP installed on an intel Mac.
If you already have the right version then I am not sure what exactly the issue may be.

  • Help! Blue Screen hangs on G5 after installing Radeon 9600 pro...

    Hi
I am having major problems with my G5, after working out that my old graphics card was knackered i bought a new ati radeon 9600 pro.
Every time i start up i get the apple logo then it hangs on a blue screen. I can get it to boot in safe mode and i've tried uninstalling the ati software and i've even re-installed OS X and wiped the disk to no avail.
I've also downloaded latest card drivers and looked for help on ati website but no real help there.
    I would appreciate any help.thanks

I just installed an ATI X800 XT and it does exactly the same thing. Even on a new system build. Ironically enough I just took out a Radeon 9600XT that worked fine. Have you found a solution yet? I think I'm going to try and reset my pram. I'll let you know what I find out.

  • Blue Screen Stuck... Installed airport card into Power Mac G4,

everything was working fine. I got online, was downloading software updates while surfing the net, then I get a small black screen that tells me I need to restart my computer in several languages.
Now the computer only gets to the blue screen, the grey spinning dial/thinking wheel goes for a bit then its just BLUE... What has happened?
Does this have anything to do with electrical charges?
Didi I cause this by inserting the Airport Card? I didn't touch any other part of the machine.
I did not unplug the monitor only the ac cord.
Please give me some good news...

    Hi-
You have had a kernel panic. These are caused by software, or, hardware problems.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
Your first suspect would be the Airport card. To be sure, you need to examine the library/logs in Console. If you can get a copy of the panic log that coincides with the kernel panic, it will offer some clues as to the problem.
You could just remove the Airport card, and see if the system returns to normal. But, there may be other causes.
Try a safe boot. Restart, and immediately after the tone, hold down the shift key:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
If you are able to boot, check the logs in Console.
If not, try a single user boot, and run fsck. Restart, and immediately hold down "Cmd + s" keys.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
Whe the command line appears, type /sbin/fsck -fy and press return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Repeat until the "volume is OK" report is returned.
For now, see what the results of the above are, and please post back.
For further troubleshooting of kernel panics, see the following:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If you haven't already, disconnect all third party devices, both internal and external.

  • MacBook starts up to blue screen only....

    Hope someone can help.
My MacBook will startup with the chime, present the grey Apple logo, then go to the blue screen where it remains, every 10 seconds or so it blinks to a different shade of blue, then back again.
I've tried mounting it to an older iBook, but if I click on the HD drive icon of the sick MacBook it freezes up the finder on the old iBook. I've been good about backing everything up via Time Machine, but cannot get it to startup from anything. Help!!!!!!

    Hi,
Try booting from your install disk and check the hard drive for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility app open, look at the bottom of the window. Look where it says: Capacity and Available. Never allow the free disk space to fall below 10 - 15% of the total drive.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    Try the Apple Hardware Test

  • IPad Mini no display, blue screen only.

iPad mini no display. Only blue screen, won't shut down and on, won't charge. Please help.

    Try a reset,
Reset your iPad by pressing the 'Sleep' and 'Home' button at the same time for about 15 seconds or so. Your iPad  will then go through a reset / reboot procedure and will be ready for use within about a minute.
Don't worry about doing this as you will not lose data or settings.
Good luck and do report back.

  • Pismo blue screen only

My pismo G3 starts up with the grey apple icon then goes to a blue screen and nothing else. The dock does not come up . I can see the mouse arrow. And nothing else. What's up? Help please.
i just installed a new battery.

    miscd,
Well, let's try a few basics...
    1. Disconnect all peripherals including a USB mouse.
    2. Reset the PRAM; wait for 2 startup chimes before you release the keys.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    3. If it does not boot normally, open the CD tray (push an opened paperclip into the small hole next to the button if the button does not respond) and insert a bootable 9.x or 10.x CD.
    4. If the Pismo is stalled at the blue screen, press the 'command + control + power button' to force restart; release the keys and immediately press/hold the 'option' key until the Startup Manager appears.
    5. Select the CD as the boot volume, then click the continue arrow.
If your Pismo does not boot to a CD, try the above procedure one more time. If unsuccessful, you may have had an optical drive failure, common to the Pismo.
Please let me know with details what happens.
