Blue Screens of Death, Explorer.exe issues, General issues
Hey everyone,
So, windows is a very important part of my mac for me. I bought a mac because apple claimed it was compatible with windows. I need it for my programming classes and I need it for certain art programs that are not available for mac. I need it to be stable and not crash every ten minutes, in other words.
I'm on my third install. All three installs have had various issues. This is the second install getting random blue screens and shutting down and restarting. Also, rarer but still occurring occasionally is either my explorer.exe won't boot up or it'll have an error message upon login.
This is a fresh install minus a few small programs, AIM, Photoshop, Illustrator, Open Canvas, Firefox, and Winamp--that's it. No matter how many times I reinstall windows, it just isn't working right on this laptop. I did an apple hardware test and it turned out okay, but I'm wondering if there's something it (and me) is missing. Surely this isn't what apple calls compatible? It's horrible at best. Is this unusual? If I take my mac to a genius, will they just say "Windows *****, it's not our problem" when it's obviously an issue with the mac environment and not windows itself? For a $3000 laptop, right now I'm just totally disappointed and depressed, I'd love some advice. T_T

Blue Screen of Death - Smax4pnp.exe app error
When I boot my T61 I get the "Smax4pnp.exe app error" and then later get the BSOD with Invalid_work_Queue_Item or no character string like the previous.
I ran MS Security Essentials and it found two or three Trojans & removed them.
Any idea what is causing this? Is my sound card dead?A couple of things to try:
Run some other malware detector. Malwarebytes (frree) has done a good job for me. There are others.
Go to device manager and uninstall your sound "card". Reboot and let the driver reinstall. If it doesn't (or if the problem persists) download and install the latest driver and sound app.

Blue Screen of Death on install of j2re-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe
Immediately upon installing j2re-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe, I get the "blue screen of death" on Windows 2000, indicating memory dump. Applications do not work subsequently that use j2re. Attempts to modify in reinstallation indicate errors in Windows installer. Don't know what to do.
Immediately upon installing
j2re-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe, I get the "blue
screen of death" on Windows 2000This is the usual symptom of a video driver problem.
Make sure you have all the latest service packs for Win2K installed, and for good measure, visit your graphics card vendor's site and get the latest drivers from there. -
NI Raptor Runtime: Blue screen of death
Hi
We've suffered two blue screens of death on a Windows 8 system running LabView code in the last couple of months. The event logs show the cause to be the NI Raptor Runtime driver. We are running LabView 2012 SP1 with all critical updates installed. Are there any known issues with this driver?
Best regards,
ChrisHi Robert
Thanks for your reply. I resinstalled and updated all of the National Instruments software on the machine this week so the DAQmx version should be up-to-date. I've pasted the versions below. We experienced another blue screen within a day of the reinstall/update though.
With regards to the code, it isn't mine so I don't know it inside out. However, the general architecture is a flat sequenece in a while loop. The total loop rate is around 1-3Hz. Within individual frames of the sequence, analogue and digital input tasks are created, run, stopped and cleared in series on each loop iteration. Individual frames may not have rate limiting timers, so a create may happen quite quickly after a clear. State changes on the front panel can cause certain frames to create and run digital output tasks that change the value of output lines, however no front panel interaction was performed within at least a few hours of any of the crashes.
Do you think that it would be worth placing a frame-rate-limiting timer into the code, to reduce the rate at which tasks are stopped and started?
Best regards,
Chris

Blue screen of death on Toshiba P755-S5375 with ADOBE ENCORE CS6
I recently purchased a new laptop and installed Adobe Master Collection CS6. I purchased the laptop for video capture and editing, as well as for blu-ray authoring.
Unfortunately, although the computer and software works fine for video capture and editing, I am unable to author a blu-ray. For authoring, I am using Adobe’s Encore CS6. After checking and previewing my creation, I attempt to build to disc using Encore. About 2 seconds after clicking the build disc in Encore, I get the “blue screen of death” (BSOD). This happens every time I try to build to blu-ray (only blu-ray has this issue; I am able to build to a DVD). I am using an external blu-ray drive on USB 3.0.
I am using Encore version 6.0.0.492

Blue screen of death when building blu-ray in Encore CS6

Hello,
I've been using my set-up (Premiere Pro 2.0* with Cineform AspectHD) successfully for years, to capture and edit footage. But just recently, my computer has given me the blue screen of death after capturing for about 5-10 minutes or caused my computer to restart in the middle of capturing. I've also noticed that the resulting captured clips are, in some places, distorted and contain blocky artifacts. It isn't a problem with the tape because the footage plays just fine on the camera's preview monitor. I tried re-installing Premiere Pro 2.0 and Cineform AspectHD, but the problem persisted after a successful, but brief capture session (the resulting clips were still distorted and contained blocky artifacts). I have no idea what the problem is! One solution I attempted was to capture on another computer in my house, using the same software. Although I didn't get the blue screen of death or a surprise restart, the captured clips were still distorted and contained blocky artifacts in some spots. Another option I tried, with the second computer, was deselecting the Scene Detect option in the capture dialogue box. As a result, the captured clips are free of distortion and blocky artifacts, but the problem is that the captured clips are too big and very difficult to manage (I shoot a lot because I'm a filmmaker and I'm in the middle of a big project). Why is this happening?!
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated!
*I'd use a later version of Premiere, but I spent a lot of money on Cineform AspectHD and the version of Cineform I have only works with Premiere Pro 2.0.I agree with John T. BSOD's are most often caused hardware issues, such as overheating of a component, or a failing, or undersized PSU.
Also, general system drivers can cause failure. Often, those are outlined (though maybe not in really adequate detail) in the Event Viewer's log. In that article, that John T. linked to, there is another link to "Finding Clues." It goes into more detail on using Event Viewer to explore warning, or error messages. If your testing of your system's components and heat, do not yield a weak link, see that one (no pun intended). It is in Reply # 3.
Good luck,

Error 13 = Blue Screen of Death?
Thought I'd try this board and see if anyone knows anything about 'error 13' and Panther.
I have been plagued by this error message which pops up whenever I try to print from either of my printers or burn a CD. This all happened after I tried to load a demo version of Adobe Illustrator CS2.
Over the last day I have tried the following:
* deleted the apple.com.print preferences
* reset the PRAM
* unplugged, unpowered and restarted the printers and their USB connections
* deleted the printers from the print setup utility and tried to reinstall them (but there too I get the 'error 13' message. Printers won't load but they do show up as if they loaded. Just won't work, that's all.
* tried logging in as a new user, and then the printer message is "Not enough RAM" to print.
* repaired the disk permissions from the CD
Generally I've done everything I can think of... except to reload the OS, which I hesitate to do because I have to first load Jaguar, then the Panther update, then the other updates. Last time I tried that things didn't quite work out.
I do have an external backup drive, which also got corrupted as I tried loading the Adobe Illustrator CS2 on that disk too. Dumb I know...
So... anyone know what 'error 13' means?
Is 'error 13' the Mac equivalent of the Windows Blue Screen of Death?
Thanks for any input...Hello Pawel,
I have looked over the service request you mentioned about acquiring 2 PCIe-6537 at 20MHz sampling rate on all 32 lines. In order to narrow down this issue, I think it would be best to try only acquire from both cards without doing any triggerring etc. Also when performing this test, I would only want to acquire from 8 channels on both cards to see if this reproduces it. If this works, we can slowly add more elements to narrow down what the issue is and make us more effective to solve the problem.
I also wanted to ask if you have tried this setup on another machine and if it worked.
Along with this, have you tried to create two Digital Tasks in MAX and try to acquire for the same amount of time to see if the issue reoccurs here? This would tell us if this problem is connected to the driver/computer or LabVIEW.

link to pic of errors http://gyazo.com/c0644eae99f575915b86c46ae9f5d8f6Hi,
In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
1. Navigate to the %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
2. Copy any and all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
3. Upload the zip containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Preferred sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers, download managers, etc.
4 (optional): The type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference
between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains
much more information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best
choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps are much larger in size due to containing much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
After doing that, to learn how to share the link to the file if you are unaware, please visit the following link -
Share files and folders and change permissions and view 'Get a link'.
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUpUtilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon use. With this said, if you've run such software, you will need to allow the system to crash once again to generate a crash dump.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
1. Start > type %systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
2. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all
drives'.
3. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system
log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
4. Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than
Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.
If you cannot get into normal mode to do any of this, please do this via Safe Mode.
Regards,
Patrick

Notebook with blue screen of death and HP Ceement errors
Hello, I am using:
Product name: HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC
Product number: QE310UA#ABA
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1
I have been having a few message/errors lately and suspect they are related
1) The "blue screen of death" has shut down operations a few times now, that I have seen. When it reboots, all my passwords are gone, all new log ins are required. I know it's been happening more than I see because my passwords will dissapear while I am away from my laptop and I had not seen it.
2) Error message "HP CEEment has stopped working, windows is looking for a solution to solve this problem", comes up a lot. Daily, usually twice at a time. I googled this and a few "answers" said to look at your firewall and to "allow" HP Ceement. I called Norton and they showed me that it is allowed, so they are not the issue and to contact HP, hence why I am here.
3) Not sure if this last one is part of the issue, but it has come up more than once lately. Error "Your current settings do not allow file to be downloaded". I ssupect when the computer reboots after the blue screen the security is automatically heightened and that is why I got this, as well as loose passwords and a couple other "secruity level" type problems.
Thanks for the help, Amycoatiamy
Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
I can offer the following in hopes that it may help.
First, a bit about the CEEment program:
CEEment Overview
Excerpted:
CEEment stands for Customer Experience Enhancement. CEEment (HPCEE.exe) is the reporting tool that HP uses to collect and study anonymous data. You can activate CEEment when you set up your computer. Or, you can activate using HP Advisor or HP Support Assistant at any time.
Commentary
It might be that the CEEment program is not the direct cause of the problem, that is, the issue might be symptomatic of the underlying problems -- it may be part of the train wreck, so-to-speak.
In any case, while the system is up and running you can try the following to fix the issue or to at least try to eliminate the CEEment program from the mix.
Download Install a new copy of the latest version of the HP Support Assistant on your system:
HP Support Assistant
If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, Select run as Administrator and install.
Reboot the system
If you like, you can switch OFF the CEEment program and the other checks that HP Support Assistant performs on your system.
Example (HP Support Assistant Version 7.4.45.4)
Open the HP Support Assistant > Settings >
Scroll down to Warranty and Services >
Next to Check warranty now >>
CHECK No, I do not want to send this data >
Scroll down to Would you like to share anonymous usage data with HP? >
CHECK No >
Under Welcome Screen (if necessary) >>
UNCHECK Show a welcome screen when I open HP Support Assistant >
Click Save
Dragon Tips
You may want to create an extra / new account with administrator privileges on the computer in case the issue is related in some way to your account.
You do want to make sure you have your personal data backed up -- make an extra effort to make sure your critical data is backed up somewhere other than on the computer. Make a copy of those files to a USB drive or to the Cloud. Make sure you include your bookmarks.

Blue Screen of Death with Nano 2nd gen
We just got a 2nd gen Nano 8GB for xmas and everytime we connect it to our PC it gives the Blue Screen of Death and then reboots. The codes it gives with the BSOD are as follows:
Stop: 0x00000050 (0xfffffff0, 0x00000000, 0x8044e86f, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of Physical Memory
Operating system is Win2k and it does this regardless of iTunes being installed on the computer or not. I have another older PC running Win2k Server and the iPod is recognized on that PC but iTunes won't load on that PC for some reason (I'm thinking it's not compatible with Win2k server?) I'm not sure if the PC that gives the BSOD has USB2.0 on it if that matters. My other MP3 player (ZenMicro Photo) works fine on the same USB port I'm using to plug the iPod into.
Any help is appreciatedIf the iPod is working on your gf's laptop then it's not (likely) the iPod. That blue screen you are getting is a Windows issue. Do you have warranty support still active on your computer? My mom recently had the dreaded blue screen and Dell was able to send her a packet of disks (Windows XP and other discs) that were needed to get things back straight. It did not make her loose any data either so she didn't have to do a full restore on the system.

Blue screen of death frequently
My father is having regular (once every week or so) blue screen of death errors. He isn't at the computer when they happen. I would like to see if anyone can take a look at the dump file(s) for the root of the issue. The dump files can be found at http://rapidshare.com/share/322F3FF41DCE0C7F22CB34977062CCB3.
Thanks,
JeffI didn't check every dmp file, but several I checked all pointed to the same culprit, graphics driver. Atikmdag.sys to be exact.
First step would be to download and install the latest driver for whatever card he has. I'm not sure what your technical level is...this is pretty straightforward if you know what you're doing, but maybe not so much if you don't.
Easiest way is to find your Computer icon in Explorer or the Start menu, right-click on it, select Manage. Click on Device Manager in the right-hand pane, expand Display adapters, and the model will be listed. Google that and use the ATI driver
from an ATI site, not what the PC vendor provides.
Installation should be pretty straightforward when you download and run the installer. I would recommend extracting the files and manually updating the driver rather than running the vendor's setup routine, especially if your Dad isn't a gamer, but
it shouldn't hurt. Extraction/manual installation is a bit more involved....
If that doesn't help, I did see a few references to a process that a guy who seems kind of kooky posted on several sites. It was met with some criticism because his use of English isn't very good I think, but some people claimed that it helped their
problem.

If none of this helps, take detailed notes and post back, I'm sure I or someone else can help further if you need it.
Good luck! -
Toshiba Satellite L755-S5306 Blue Screen of Death BSOD
If you are having “The Blue Screen Of Death” (BSOD) with a Toshiba Satellite L755-S5306 you are not alone. Please leave a comment in hopes enough of us can find each other and come up with a more permanent solution than the work around I present here. As of the day this was posted there was nothing index into Google or Toshiba’s forums regarding a Toshiba Satellite L755-S5306 having a BSOD problem.
Unfortunately I don't have an answer or solution so much as a troubleshooting alternative and that is to install Ubuntu 11+. I would rather use windows7 but the fact that Ubuntu runs without crashes indicates that my problem is a Windows 7 software issue. Windows7 is conflicting with either the hardware within my computer or some pre-installed factory software.
This laptop is new (it has only been out of the box for 3 months), has an i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and is still under warranty; until Sept. 10, 2012. I have yet to contact Toshiba but will. Within the last month (Feb. 2012) I started to get multiple BSODs out of no where. These were the following error messages:
1. KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Caused By Driver : luafv.sys
2. KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Caused By Driver : Ntfs.sys
3. SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
Caused By Driver : ntoskrnl.exe
4. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Caused By Driver : ntoskrnl.exe
5. KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Caused By Driver : partmgr.sys
You can see my full BSOD error reports here: CLICK HERE
I have done all of the following hoping to solve this issue with no luck:
1. Re-formated computer with factory shipped disk. Five Minutes after I did this I got the BSOD. That definitely eliminated the idea that it was something I had installed or that it was a windows update conflict.
2. Got all window updates. That didn’t help.
3. Checked all drivers manually one by one through the device manager for updates; according to the Device Manager there was no updates.
*However, this is the only area of hope that I have. I downloaded the program Drive Max and it list several drivers as outdated. I can only download two a day and install them. After I have them all installed I will report back as to whether or not I have a BSOD.
4. Updated BIOS. Toshiba did have a BIOS update available but the update did not fix my BSOD problems. I have seen on this forum many people have had problems with the BIOS but I have not.
5. Ran window's memory diagnostic tool. It reported no errors.
60 I also ran Ubuntus memory test and passed.
7. Check Disk with no errors
After all those failed attempts I took to the Internet. That is when I ran across a post online where a person stated they had the same problem with a similar Toshiba laptop and switched to Ubuntu. After doing so they had no problems. I did the same and agree I have no issues after one week. So I hope this helps for now. If anyone has this problem or finds a windows based solution please leave a comment.Thank you all for your help.
Since I reformatted every time I have booted up I have turned on the Windows memory diagnostic too. I did this in hopes that if a BSOD occurred it would catch something when it rebooted and today it did after an extended memory test.
I got the standard message, “Hardware problems were detected...Test results will be displayed again after you log on”, however no test results were ever displayed. Does anyone know if there is a way to manually find the results of the test? Also, I ran the test again to see if I could get the results and the second time it said there were no problems detected.
At this point I am suspecting it to be a faulty stick of RAM. Windows 7 utilizes about 1.25GB of ram when booted and Ubuntu 200MB. This very well could be why Ubuntu works without problems.
I have to write a business plan in the next few weeks and cannot send my laptop in until that is done. So I will continue to use Ubuntu until done with my plan and then contact Toshiba. I will post back with any information I get in regards to the problem and once again thank you all for your help. -

Go to the Intel website and use their automated driver installation there.
There's been a known issue with the Intel drivers that are included. Give that a try and report back.
yes i already do (http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect) and it's say that all my drivers are current
also in the windows update their is even a more recent drivers ... i try it also without success :( -
Ipod crashes windows (blue screen of death)
Hi all. A bit of background info:
A couple of months ago the hard drive crashed on my friends computer. They had to reinstall their OS. Thankfully they had made backups of most everything and were able to get most things reinstalled successfully.
Now they are using a 15g ipod connected through a firewire port on an HP laptop. They do not have a USB adaptor, so gotta go with the FW.
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
I know this is vague information, but any pointers on how to proceed in troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Frosthi Frostine!

we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm checking on:
Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
can you get that information for us from their PC?
(if the screen is specifying the file that Windows is crashing on, that would be helpful to know too.)
