Blue Tooth interference between two IMacs

I just purchased the 27" retina IMac last week and I moved the old IMac #1 with same Yosemite 10.10 to another room 30 feet away.
The new IMac #2 goes crazy when the old iMac #1 is turned on. The mouse will freeze up and the keyboard gets dis-connected.
From the new IMac I tried to disconnect IMac #1 from bluetooth devices but it comes back. I tried to pair keyboards but they are not found? I have paired each mouse in blue tooth settings on each computer.
When I shut down the old IMac #1 all is fine on the new IMac. Not the answer but have on order wired mouse and keyboard for old and will turn off blue tooth on that computer.
I spoke with Apple tech and he didn't know what was wrong.

jcbear:
I've had the exact same problem that started about the same time as your post (Nov/2014).  I was finally able to speak with a great senior level tech at Apple that understood the issue and who walked me through some steps that appear to have solved the problem.  You will need a USB mouse to do it because you have to turn the bluetooth off temporarily but still be able to use a mouse.  Basically he said it seems to be a pairing issue that doesn't normally occur because once a mouse or trackpad is paired, it should not be discoverable to other bluetooth signals (like my other iMac).  So my understanding of what we did is turn the bluetooth off, erase all the bluetooth settings, reset the computer by unplugging the power cord for a while, and then start it up again to let my mouse and trackpad re-pair.  Neither one has dropped the connection since and my other iMac has been on all day.  Here are the steps we did:
1. Attach a USB mouse.
2. In System Preferences, go to Bluetooth Preferences and turn Bluetooth OFF.
3. In Finder, go to Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences and delete the file named: com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
4. Turn OFF the Magic Mouse and/or Trackpad
5. Shut down the computer.
6. Unplug the power cord from the computer and wait a least 10 seconds.
7. Turn ON the Magic Mouse and/or Trackpad.
7. Plug in the power cord and start up the machine.  The Magic Mouse and/or Trackpad should automatically pair as a new connection.
This is all we did and it seems to be working like new again.  You should know that I use the Apple USB Keyboard (not their Bluetooth Keyboard) so it wasn't an issue when I turned off the Bluetooth.  You may need a USB Keyboard to do this as well.
Hope this helps.  I know how frustrating it is to deal with this issue.

  • Love triangle between two iMacs and a trackpad

We have two iMacs side by side, Wallace and Gromit, each with an Apple wireless keyboard and Magic trackpad.  Wallace started ignoring its trackpad -- it would not "discover" it no matter how much the trackpad tried to connect.  We checked, tested and replaced batteries, to no effect.  We then pulled out an old Magic mouse we had used (the kind with the flat, curved top) and Wallace accepted the mouse's bluetooth connection immediately.
You might think that Wallace's trackpad's bluetooth had just conked out, but Gromit then began persistently asking if we wanted it to connect with Wallace's trackpad, which is still sitting next to Wallace, powered on but ignored by Wallace.
In other words, Wallace is miffed with its own trackpad and is ignoring it, while Gromit, although has its own perfectly good trackpad, has developed a wandering eye, and wants to connect with Wallace's trackpad. Wallace's trackpad's bluetooth, of course, is working, because it is sending come-hither signals to Gromit.
We know which trackpad was connected to which computer, because we wrote their names on the undersides when we installed them.  In any case, Gromit's trackpad still faithfully works with Gromit, and Wallace will discover and connect with its old mouse, but completely ignores its trackpad, which is lonely and despondent and is desperately signaling to Gromit that it wants to set up housekeeping with Gromit.
How can we restore the happy, stable relationship between Wallace and its trackpad?

    Hi rrobbi,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like Wallace may need a little therapy in the form of resetting the PRAM and the SMC.  Instructions for doing that can be found here:

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

There are some additional troubleshooting steps in this article, but it sounds like you've pretty well isolated the issue down to being with Wallace's bluetooth records already:

  • Syncing one itunes library between two imac's

In itunes 10, I enabled home share on my two imac's. One imac is new, the other mac has my itunes library.
I signed onto both imac's home shares with the "same" apple ID. The items library on my old imac now shows up in the new imac itunes library in my itunes list as "joes itunes library".
Now... how can I sync or copy the entire library between the two imac's, using some sort of "sync" process? I noticed an "import" button at the bottom looking at the "joes itunes library" list on the new imac. If I highlight one selection, it will import that into the new imac itunes library. But i didn't really want to highlight every single movie, tv and music file then import. I was hoping there was a "sync" method to keep both imac itunes libraries mirrored. There must be a way to do this?

When using homeshare, I realized I CANNOT buy new media thru itunes.
When buying music, apps or video, the purchase fails.
Says "contact itunes support to complete transaction".
    Tried several times.
Even changed credit cards on the acct. Still no go.
    Not a credit card issue
iTunes tech was pretty much clueless. Told me to try the purchase
    after waiting 24 hours.
Then I started thinking about homeshare and media rights, so I turned off
homeshare on both mac's, and the purchase went thru.
Apple added homeshare to the latest itunes update, or media share (what ever they call it), but looks like something is at issue as to media rights and homeshare and buying from itunes with share is enabled.

  • Safe distance between two iMacs

How far apart should I keep two iMacs when they are both running? Right now they are set up about a foot apart. Is that a safe distance? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
    iMac G5 iSight 20", iMac G5 17", Powerbook 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hello,
If you are talking about the iMac G5 or any other LCD screen iMac, then you could safely put them right up against each other with no concern at all. They will not interfere with each other, and no harm will result.
Your most important consideration is ventilation. And, the vents on the iMac G5 and Intel iMacs are on the bottom and the back. And, that's the only area you need to be concerned about when it comes to proximity to other computers. As long as you have about about 6 inches behind the computer (preferably a foot or two) and nothing obstructing the bottom vents, then you should be fine.
The more space you have behind the computer, the cooler it will run. If you reduce airspace behind it, then it will tend to run a little hotter because it will not have as much room to dispose of the hot air. Too little space could cause the hot air to build-up behind the machine, and reduce the effectiveness of the cooling system. Generally speaking, 1-foot / 12-inches is more than adequate.
As for putting the machines side by side, the only possible concern I see there is that you would have to move one of them if you wanted to eject a CD from the drive that is near the other computer.
Now, if you were talking about an older CRT iMac (such as the iMac G3), then you would want more space between the machines. CRT monitors produce an electromagnetic field around them. And, when you place two CRT monitors too close together, you can visually see a ghosting effect on them caused by their proximity to the other monitor.
The specific distance varies by CRT monitor. I've had some that could sit about a foot apart with no noticeable effects. And, I've had others that needed about 2 or 3 feet.
    I hope this helps.

  • File Transfers slow between two iMac 5K Retina Macs on same network

I have been looking for a few weeks for a solution to my slow network file transfers between two new iMac 5K Retina Macs. They both are high-configured and only have SSD storage.  They run OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and all other updates are current. I have tried via ethernet and wi-fi (type N) and get about the same results. The worst part is I have 30+ mbps internet speed and I can download a huge file quicker than I can copy it between two $4K Macs!!!!.  The speed is about 1-2MBytes/sec. If I copy a folder with say 1.5GB in 7 files it takes 16 mins or so.
I have tried afp://, smb://, cifs:// protocols and all are slow.
My previous iMacs and MacBook Pros with Snow Leopard never had this issue.
    Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem but i think the problem is somewhere in the user settings.
i created a 500mb file and tried to copy it to the OSX server - it took 6 minutes to transfer. this is a brand new mini - with user data restored from a time machine backup of a MBP.
i switched users on the mini to admin user and the transfer took less than 5 seconds
other macs on the network transferred the same file in 5 seconds.
what settings should i be looking at with the user in question?

  • Troubleshoot sharing between two iMacs

I have two computers - Alice's and Bob's - on my wireless network. Both can connect to the internet, and they were successfully set up to share a wireless printer as well. Both machines have "File Sharing" and "Printer Sharing" set up in System Preferences > Sharing.
Alice has a Shared folder (Everyone: Read & Write) which Bob can navigate to in the Finder with no problem: Alice's iMac shows in Bob's Finder under "Shared" items, and Bob can click on that to browse all items in Alice's Shared folder. The reverse should work as well, but it does not.
Bob also has a Shared folder (also Everyone: Read & Write), and Bob's iMac shows in Alice's Finder under "Shared" items. However, when Alice clicks on that, the finder shows a "Connection Failed" error.
Bob's File Sharing display states, "other users can access shared folders on this computer, and admininstrators all volumes, at afp://192.168.1.15/...". If Alice uses her Finder to Connect to Server: Server Address afp://192.168.1.15/, the connection is attempted but fails with the error message: The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://192.168.1.15" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
Help? What to troubleshoot next? I'm not sure why sharing would work so easily in one direction, but not in the other - the machines are both running 10.5.8.
Thanks in advance, I'll be watching this thread closely and am ready to try any suggested next steps.

This sounds a little familiar to me - I had a similar problem sharing directoreis between our two home-computers. What worked for me was making sure that :
    1. the user accounts and groups exist on both computers
    2. their properties are exactly the same, i.e. :
    GeneratedUID's
    PrimaryGroupID
    UID
    GID
I admit that I do not see clear through all this, but now it works like a charm ...

  • How to share internet between two Imacs

Hi I just got me a new Imac and I want to share the internet with my other Imac
(two years old) useing the built-in airport extreme. Thanks boscoman

    Hi boscoman
Assuming that one iMac is receiving its internet connection through the ethernet cable, here's how you do it.
On the Mac that's sharing out it's connection, go to System Preferences, Sharing, Internet, and set the options as:
Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
    To computers using: Airport
Then click "Airport Options" and set the name of the network you want to create, and an encryption and password (optional). Click "Start".
On the other Mac, go to the Airport menu, and locate the new network. Log in with the password you just set. That should do it!

  • How can I write a script to regularly transfer a file between two iMacs on a network?

I keep all our family photo files (iPhoto Library) on my wife's iMac.  Because we can't share the library simultaneously, I want to automate the copying of the library from her iMac to mine say, once a week in the wee hours (it's a big file). Both of our iMacs are on our common (wired) home network.  Is there a way to write a script that will accomplish that?  If it matters, we both maintain independent external backup drives and use 'Time Machine' judiciously.  Thanks in advance for any guidance!!!

  • Unpairing and pairing keyboards between two iMacs

    Hi,
There's plenty of discussion on these matters over here, but I decided to start a new thread specific to my situation and to see if I've understood what I've read so far.
    - I just got a new iMac ( 2.7GHZ i5   --- OS 10.6.6 ) which came with the chrome colored wireless keyboard without the numeric keypad.
    - I want to use the USB keyboard and a third party USB mouse that I've been using on my older iMac (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo --- OS 10.5.8 ---(Came out probably 2007 or 2008)) because I need the numeric keypad for shortcuts in certain programs. Plus, I don't wanna be dependent on battery life.
Here's what I understand I should do: I'll also insert questions here:
    1. unpair the wireless keyboard (and the magic mouse) in system prefs with my new iMac
Q-if something goes wrong and I just can't get it to pair with my older iMac, is it easy to pair it again with the newer one which it was originally paired with?
    2. Remove all USB "inputs" from my older iMac while it's shut down. Power up the older mac with the wireless keyb/mouse in near vicinity.
Q- Should I have them turned on while the computer is starting up?
    3. If it doesn't work, clear PRAM and try again (?)
Have I missed anything important?  The magic mouse and the new wireless keyboard should work on the older iMac, right?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi:
    Glad they are paired!
The touch functions (scrolling etc) of the mouse arent working though... probably won't work on OS 10.5 ?
The functions will work (except for momentum scrolloing) after you install this update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3925
Oh, another quirk I noticed is that some keys aren't properly mapped... like the "increase volume" key brings up the dashboard... how can I change this?
That is normal behavior under OS X 10.5.  Since I have not used 10.5 for quite awhile, I do not remember if there is a way to change it.

  • BT Yahoo mail no longer syncs between two iMac and MacBook

I've used BT Yahoo Mail on an iMac, Macbook and iPad successfully for some time with IMAP settings.  Following recent upgrades, the inbox is no longer kept in sync on the different computers.  Messages read on one computer are not marked as read on the other, and newly arrived incoming mail is not displayed on the second computer, having appeared on the first.  The only solution seems to be to rebuild the mailbox - tedious as it takes time, and you don't know until you try whether there is mail to be synced.
I'm using Mail 6.5 (1508) on the iMac, and Mail 5.3 (1283) on the MacBook.
Is there any solution to this please?
    Thanks.

Need help with configuring a Palm Treo755p (Sprint) to be used as "phone as a modem" with my laptop pc via Blue Tooth. The two are "paired" and I can push files (documents) from PC to phone.
