Blueray - v HDDV in FCP

With what seems to be emerging, what do we do with our HD ideas if/when Blueray is the king... ? It seems we are only a short time away now from being forced into recognition of Sony's idea - and many of us have committed to HDDV with FCP .
Rumour has it that Toshiba is about to capitulate. What's the extra cash amounting to for the change? Does FCP give us the opportunity for Blueray production with no worries? Has Apple arranged for such a contingency in the future? And in ignorance, how do those HD cameras fair with Blueray being the one and only.... ?

To my knowledge here in the UK, Jon, the majority of people have bought such sets without knowing of the possible consequences. Worse still, we have Apple not showing any signs of in some way integrating FCP, DVDSP and iDVD (with the latter's ability to produce good introductory shorts to so many films - and yes I know of the alternatives amounting to a workaround without using hitherto satisfactory progs ) into the Blue-ray system - and there are also very many pro bods producing wedding, corporate and event films on miniDV. Those films will also have been bought by people who have an interest in being able to play them "forever" so it looks like a disaster to me. That brings in my previous thoughts about a domestic recorder/player capable of being used to copy the HD stuff to Blue-ray. It surely follows that if Blue-ray is the winner (almost a cert now) there should be a moral obligation to produce such recorder/players... ? Oh, I forgot, those big boys have no interest in morality for public benefit - only profit !

  • G5  AND HD EDITING WITH FCP

I'm considering buying one of the G5s - the 2.3 model with 250gb HD. I already have FCP3 and would have to upgrade it. So far I've found iDVD to be useful together with Toast6 working on a G4 800 Dual with two 80gb HDs, one for main OS and the other for storage of FCP3 edited material, but....
How easy will it be, if possible anyway, to edit the new HD camera produced stuff with the G5 2.3 model? I'm mainly using a Canon XM2 at the moment and appreciate that a camera change will be necessary for my future requirements.
    All contributions gratefully received.

I suggest waiting too, right now dual cores are going into consumer level Mac's, so Quads Intels should become the norm for Mac Towers very shortly. Possibly with a eight core come early next year.
Software is still up in the air, third party PCI cards haven't even been made because the new Mac Pro Towers haven't even been announced.
I haven't seen much in the way of PCI-Express options either.
As you know rendering takes time, the more CPU's you have the better, and although you could go now, it's not the best move at this time.
Hopefully we will see faster Mac Pro's with more X-Grid use by Apple software, we could build our own clusters. This would be a tremendous hardware advantage over Windoze PC's now that the processors are the same in each platform.
FCP renders could be automatically split up and delegated to networked cluster Macs via XGrid. HD is very disk/CPU intensive, large files too.
As some have noticed, the PPC Quad sports two Ethernet connections.
BlueRay drives are coming, it's a whole new industry of HD video disks.
Yep, waiting until the dust settles and Rev 2 with eight cores might be the wise choice.

  • Difference in quality on footage imported in FCP 3.0 vs. 5.0?

    Hi all.
I'm wondering if there is a difference in quality of image for footage captured in FCP 3.0 compared with footage captured in FCP 5.0?
I've got a project that contains footage captured from both these apps. I'm presently editing it on FCP 5.0. I'm just wondering if there is a difference that might come to haunt me later on down the road (i.e. moving project to dvd, blueray, hd dvd, digibeta, etc.)
    The footage is standard DV.
    Thanks a bunch.
    hr2

I admit, I'm a bit clueless on the codec issue, but
hasn't the Quicktime codec been vastly improved since
    FCP 3.0? What with H.264?
Yes, H.264 is a great delivery codec compared to some from the past, but if you're capturing DV via FireWire into your Mac, that's different and has nothing to do with H.264.
So in the old 3.0 days you could capture DV25, edit, then when you're done export to Cinepak or Sorenson 3 or somethin'.
Today you can capture DV25, edit, then when you're done export and compress to H.264.

  • Archiving FCP Video

Does any one have advice on archiving FCP video without using lots of HD space or DVDs that is cost efficient?
    1. The best way to archive all raw video and FCP project?
    2. The best way to archive only FCP project with multiple channels of audio?
    3. Archiving material off of P2, XD/BlueRay, XDcamEX/Cards?
    4. Cost saving archiving tips?

Hi - Right now I use a combination of redundant hard drives and Blu-ray data discs.
I was researching moving to an LTO tape based storage system, but could not find a combo that was cost effective at my level of need. LTO is, however, close to the gold standard for archival reliability.
Now I am waiting for the next version of Blu-ray, BDXL which is due out soon with a capacity of 128 gigs a disc.
    http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2010/04/05/bdxl-promises-128gb-discs/1
This hits the sweet spot for me in that an average project of mine runs in the 70-90 gig area.
My experience with Blu-ray as a data storage medium has been very positive.
I often take my Blu-ray burner with me on multi-day shoots and back up the XDcam discs, Ex cards, and sound files to Blu-ray in the evenings after the shoot.
In terms of dealing with complicated projects (such as multiple audio tracks, graphics, 3D animations, etc, the best way i found it to use Media Manager to assemble all the media elements for the prohect into one folder and then archive that.
As to the expense, I try to build that in to my job estimate so that the jobs are paying for the additional drives/optical disks.
Keep in mind that with any archival system, the other half of the problem is keeping an accurate database of where everything is.
    Hope this helps

  • FCP X 1080 50p

hello, like to buy a video cutting software. but i am not sure if final cut pro x can handle my panasinic 1080 50p files. i like to edit and export with 50p quality. is this possible ? and do i need "compressor" or can FCP X can handle this out of the box ?
ar the and i like to burn a blueray and watch on my player.

hi tom, thank you for your fast answer !!! so we can summarize that i can import my original panasonic 1080 50p videos without an intermediate step ? connecting the cam via usb 2.0 to the macbook pro or mac pro and then FCP X recognize the cam when i am going to import ?
then i made some background music and titel and then i go to share to "bluray" and thats it ?
is there a example like 10 minutes video takes 20 minutes of rendering or something like that ?
is this possible with a macbook pro latest technology or did i "need" a mac pro ?
    thank you !

  • Unable to capture in FCP 6, HELP!

Trying to capture dvx100 footage using FCP 6(studio2) with no luck.
When initiating log and capture, I can control my camera via FW, but preview is disabled as well as
    ability to capture footage.
I have tried deleting pref's, deleting QT prefs, triple checked settings (NTSC DV), tried variations of
turning camera off/on during opening of FCP as well as using alternate ports.
I'm at a loss. Can anyone help!!?!?!
    - Need to cut something asap.
    Thanks.

Thank you Patrick. You have helped me before, so thanks again.
I do not have anything else connected to the firewire ports. I have an external hard drive, but I have tried to capture with and without the hard drive attached. I did recently back up using Carbon Copy Cloner to another hard drive, if anyone thinks this may be the issue.
I can't recall the exact error message in FCP (I have deleted the program trying to fix the issue, and focus on the capture problem in Quicktime thinking that if Quicktime and iMovie both don't capture, that the problem is not with FCP, but either with the OS or the back end of QT) I can re-install FCP to give you the exact FCP error message if you would like me too. Ie, if the exact error message is necessary.
    Thanks again for your response.

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Unable to capture HDV in FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVR-Z1P

Hi I'm attempting to capture HDV footage from a Sony Z1.
I am trying to capture some HDV footage I shot with the Z1, but FCP simply refuses to recognize the Z1
I'm certain I've got all the settings correct:
    - Camera is set to HDV firewire out
    - capture presets is set to HDV
    - device control preset is set to Sony HDV FireWire
    - sequence preset is set to HDV 1080i50 (I'm in Australia)
    - footage IS HDV 1080i50
But I keep getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device and Device Control" popup. I've tried everything
    - rebooted the camera
    - restarted FCP
    - rebooted the system
    - changed the capture/device control settings in FCP and tried out a regular DV deck to make sure it wasn't the cable
    Nothing has worked.
I'm on a MBPro I7. No Kona card or anything like that, just trying to capture through firewire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Matt
At present it will capture HDV in IMovie but not FCP 6.0.1

Thanks Adrian, since posting the thread I've thought of that too but unfortunately to no avail. From other forums I've read this seems to be a central theme to the solution to my capture woes. I since have sorted the problem it was in Audio/Video Settings.
In the end I set my Audio/Video Settings to:
Sequence Preset to: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Capture Pre-HDV- Apple intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
And hey presto my I'm capturing HD without any problems. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • FCP & CRT Video Monitors with 24" iMac

I am considering the purchase of a 24" iMac with the optional 7600GT video card for video editing. I have read that the $19 Apple "Mini-DVI to Video Adapter" will give me audio and SVGA outputs to connect to a TV/CRT monitor. But I have read many user comments that claim the LCD display in the iMac suddenly changes resolutions when this Mini-DVI adapter is plugged into the iMac. But those comments don't say if it happens to every iMac (including the new 24") or just to older iMacs. I also wonder if the 7600GT video card makes any difference.
My intention is to edit video in FCP on this 24" iMac and I wish to view full resolution standard video on a CRT video monitor. But I would prefer it if the resolution of the iMac screen didn't change while I view the video on the CRT monitor. I want to see the iMac display at full resolution and the CRT video monitor at its full resolution, at the same time. Is this possible with a 24" iMac that has the 7600GT video card? Or am I forced to get a more expensive Mac Pro system to accomplish this feat?
    Many thanks.
    G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I wish to view full resolution standard video on a CRT video monitor.<<</div>
As Zeb pointed out, your method is NOT the way to properly view FCP's output on an external TV monitor. To do it the right way, you'll first need to determine which video formats you'll be working with; all DV25 formats can be monitored via the Firewire output through a qualified DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter). All other formats will require the addition of a dedicated card, such as those offered by Kona and Decklink, or a box like the MXO by Matrox.

  • How many times can you install FCP?

Hello everyone, new to the forums here. I've searched throught he forums but couldnt find an answer to my question.
I'm in the middle of installing Final Cut Studio 2 (waiting to put in the next disc) when my buddy came over and mentioned that you could only install FCP one time and never install it again on any other computer. This worries me because in January I was going to get a new Mac Pro and un-install FC from my Macbook Pro so I could use it on the new computer. Is this possible? Or once I install this on my laptop is it permanent?
Thanks in advance for the help

Ok so you can install it on as many machines as you like but can only use (or have one activated through registering) one at a time. I know this is a touchy subject with piracy and all, but I thought it would just be rediculous if I installed this on my laptop, and 6 months down the line wanted to install it on another computer that I own.

  • DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?
    Thanks all,
    Best wishes
    Michael

    Hi Thomas, that's it!
Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?
Thanks again for the answer - and so quick on a Sunday too!
    Kind regards
    Michael

  • Want to hide or mod FCP 6 Splash Screen

Just want to hide the splash screen on my FCP system. I rent it to indy projects and I want to protect my serial. How can I access the Splash Screen Image? I've been able to mod the splash screen on all the other apps on the rental system but can not find or get to the Splash Screen for Color and FCP 6. I know that a real hacker can find my serial some how but I am not trying to block those geniuses. Just the lazy ones that are willing to go as far as copying or screen grabbing my Splash Screen and or About Screens to get a working serial. I know how to mod the Splash Screen to hide my serial and how to hide the app so the user can't get to the splash screen. I just don't know where the splash screen file is. I've read that it is in the .nib files? I just wanna hide my serial. Don't care if I mod it myself or install an app that does it for me. Any apple people or anyone else know what I can do to protect my product. I've also been told that the splash screen does not display the full serial but it soo totally does. Hey apple, please add the ability to hide this splash screen. Perhaps with it's own password to unlock and show again? OR, make splash screen hiding a universal ability in the OS. That would be sweet! Anyway,... ideas?

Hey all. I have been able to mod the splash screen on all the apps in FCP Studio 2 except for FCP and Color. The other studio apps Splash Screens access a .psd file. The only files I've found in Color that seem like they might be the splash screen files are ft_splash.Isi, ft_splashEDU.Isi, ft_splashNFR.Isi and ft_splashVOL.Isi
How do I open a .Isi file? If I can figure that out I can hide the serial number for Color but it still leaves FCP. Why do apps show the serial on the splash screen at all? What purpose does this serve?

  • FCP 6 no longer 'sees' my Sony HDR-HC7.  Works perfectly with iMovie HD

I used to be able to capture from and print to my HC7. Setup was saved. Now, FCP doesn't 'see' the camera with the saved settings, or when I try setting it up again from scratch. Camera connection, driver, etc. are good in that the camera works perfectly with IMovie HD. Obviously I've messed something up in FCP, but I can't find it. Suggestions?

Thanks for the response SDIllini, unfortunately when I do go the Disk Utility, my camcorder isn't even show for me to even repair the disk permissions. As monty jr stated, Sony was no help for me either, they also told me that I would need to contact Apple. The problem still remains unsolved though, it's as if the MBP just doesn't recognize the camcorder whatsoever. I'm open to any suggestions, have anymore?
