Bluetooth 4.0 hotspot?

I have an iPhone 4S through AT&T and a 3rd generation iPad. I get up to about 9 Mbps data speeds on my phone itself when using HSPA+, but when I create a Bluetooth hotspot and connect with my iPad, I see a maximum throughput of 1.5 Mbps down, even though the Bluetooth 4.0 specifications theoretically support data throughput of up to around 22 Mbps.
Does anyone know why this is so? Does iOS 5 not support the proper profile?
Both devices are running iOS 5.1.1.

It does seem to know the difference, because when connected to an iOS Personal Hotspot, the you doen't get the usual wifi connection icon in the status bar. You get the interlinking circles icon instead. So it should be possible, but whether or not it is treated differently by iCloud/Photo Stream is another story.

I want to tether the WiFi iPad to the Telstra (Australia) 3GS iPhone. It should be possible. The iPhone General settings seem to allow only Bluetooth or USB Hotspot connectivity though.
    Any help appreciated.

Have you purchased the required data tethering plan for the iPhone? The iPhone 3G and 3GS only allow BT and USB tethering. The iPhone4 also allows wifi tethering. Se:

  • Macbook pro connects to iphone through bluetooth but can't access the internet

Hello, I have a macbook pro 10.6 and an iphone 3gs 4.3.3. I used to be able to connect the macbook to the iphone through bluetooth using personal hotspot and access the internet but one day it just stopped working. I have tried turning them off and on, disconnecting bluetooth etc but nothing has worked so far. I have tried connecting my iphone to my ipad2 through bluetooth, it works great. The iphone to the macbook through usb and it works great as well. I have tried connecting another iphone to my macbook through bluetooth and it doesn't work. The bluetooth on my macbook seems to be the problem
Well, to be more precise, the macbook sees the iphones, connects to them through bluetooth, the blue bar appears on the iphones screens but the computer wont access the internet.
    Any idea?
    Thank you very much.

    SUCCESS!!!!!
I visited my brother-in-law yesterday and attempted to connect with his secure network. By sheer luck, he is using the exact same model LinkSys router. My iPhone connected first time--so the iPhone was eliminated as a source of the problem.
I didn't do a lot of troubleshooting at his house, but I did notice that his network was set for both dynamic DHCP and dynamic DNS. I know that either or both of Windstream (my ISP) and my broadband modem requires a pair of static DNS addresses.
Sure enough, delving real deep into Windstream's support site, I discovered a LinkSys router DNS help page, specifying how to set static DNS addresses in LinkSys routers. I then accessed my router, enterd the known static addresses, saved the router settings, then rebooted the iPhone and connected to the network.
    SUCCESS!!!
Thanks to Jane, who suggested it was an ISP issue, Jason, and all at Apple support. dumonj, I'll email you directly. Try this suggestion and see if it helps.

  • IPad 2/iPhone 3GS Personal Hotspot - Rogers - Canada

I have an iPhone 3 GS on the Rogers network with a 6 GB data plan. I just bout a 64 GB 3G iPad. I didn't really understand the "personal hotspot" technology when I bought my iPad last week and have since read up.
Speaking to Rogers, if I want to share my data plan, I can do so for $30.00/month and get 1GB of data from my phone plan. This seems to be a bit of a waste. The only other option is to buy a separate data plan for the iPad, but 250 mb is too little and 500 mb is only offered on a one year plan.
So I read about the personal hotspot option and set it up for a test via Blue Tooth (the only option available for iPhone 3GS). What I found was a perfect solution for accessing the internet with my iPad via Blue Tooth. the connection is fast enough to stream video from Netflix without any stuttering or freezing.
My question is: How will enabling Bluetooth and Personal Hotspot affect battery life on both devices? Also, I'm thinking that I could have done without the 3G model as I can always get access via my iPhone.

The speed would be about the same from seeing usage of both with speedtest.net to test the speed that is Bluetooth and wifi out. The only real difference is that the wifi is easier cause all it takes is connecting to the network rather than pairing devices but wifi out eats battery life. Bluetooth while still a battery killer compared to nothing on at all is nowhere as bad as wifi. As for speed compared to direct 3G on iPad I can't really say cause everyone that I know that has a iPad has wifi either cause they all tether through their phone. But from the speeds that are seen on speedtest on phone compared to iPad I'd say that the difference in speed if any is that great. I get about 1.5-2.5 Mbs down on phone and identical speeds on iPad when tethered. This is with att in us so I don't know what Rogers speeds are but I would suggest getting speedtest app if you want to find if there is a difference.

  • HT1338 My macbook pro is not recognising or connecting to the personal internet hotspot on my Iphone 4. How do I rectify. Was working fine yesterday.

Since yesterday my macbook wont accept or connect to my personal hotspot on my I phone 4s. Any suggestions fellow applemeisters?

    Problem resolved
I was unable to use iPhone  4 ios 6.o.1 as a WIFI Verizon cellular hotspot to give my with my Macbook PRO OSX 10.6.8 internet access
In the past I was able to do so but this function quit working several months ago.  I blamed it on either defective hardware or IOS 6 upgrades.
My iphone showed an active hotspot and connection but I was not showing a connection on my Macbook.  I was getting an error on my Macbook saying bluetooth was not active on the device.
As a result I was not able to tether my Macbook to my iPhone hotspot through bluetooth or via USB
After MANY MANY hours researching  I found an idea for the solution in the website below by Girl.luvzer.Mac
    http://chimac.net/2010/10/21/your-connection-failed-because-the-communication-de vice-is-unavailable-make-sure-its-connected-to-your-computer-and-try-reconnectin g/
    My instructions are below:
Go to Macbook System Preferences>Network . At the top of this window, it probably will say Location:Automatic. Click that drop-down box and choose “Edit Locations”. Click on the +, and create and select a new location.  You do not need to name the location you create.
This was the key for me to get my iPhone hotspot bluetooth and tethering working with my Macbook
    Some other notes:
Your cellphone provider needs to enable hotspot capability on your cellphone service
Your iPhone settings will need to have both bluetooth and cellular hotspot turned on
You will have to pair your iPhone and Macbook
    Go to ...Settings/ Network/Bluetooth
Click the ON and Discoverable boxes
If your iphone is already shown in the box on the left press the - button to remove it
Click sharing setup to pair your Macbook with your iPhone
In your Macbook ...Settings / Network
      Turn off Airport
Select Bluetooth Pan and use the connect button to connect to your iPhone
It will take a moment for the connection to complete
Once you have done that your iPhone should provide your Macbook a wired USB or a Bluetooth hotspot!!!
Good luck, I hope this works for you as well
This was submitted via my Macbook through my newly fixed iPhone hotspot ;-)

  • Yoga 13 Bluetooth Tethering Problem

I am having a problem with my new Yoga 13 when trying to tether my Samsung Galaxy S3 via Bluetooth.
I go to add a device in Settings.  The devices pair successfully, but the 'Offline' message immediately shows beneath the Phone in devices.
    USB tething works fine.
    Can anyone help please?

    Hi All
Try the following steps which seem to have worked for me (Apologies for the numbering. It went wonky when I tried to past from a word doc):
Disconnect any existing Wi-Fi connections on your Yoga 13.You can do this from your standard Desktop (bottom right) Wi-Fi Signal strength icon:
Swipe from the right to open your Charms menu and select “Search”
    Type in “Devices”
    Select “Settings”
    Select “Devices”
If your iPhone 5 already exists in the “Devices” list, REMOVE IT:
    Highlight the list item
Select the small minus sign and confirm removal of the devic.
    On your iPhone 5:
Make sure you have 3G on and functioning as normal
First make sure Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Personal Hotspot are turned off.
Then select and switch on your Personal Hotspot
You should be prompted to turn on Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth. Just turn them both on.
Keep your Personal Hotspot page open
Back on your Ideapad Yoga 13
Ensure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on:
    Then open Charms menu again
                                                                   i.      Search “Bluetooth”
                                                                 ii.      Select “Settings”
                                                                iii.      Select “Add Bluetooth Device”
Your iPhone 5 should come up in the list of detected devices
                                                                   i.      Select your iPhone 5
Open your standard desktop and select the small bars icon representing your wireless network connections.
Your iPhone 5 should now become available in the Wi-Fi list.
Connect as normal and you should be prompted for the Wi-Fi Password on your Personal Hotspot page on your iPhone 5.
Enter the password and that should get you up and running.
    Best of luck
    Claude

  • 3G won't work after updating IPad3 to iOS6

After having upgrade my iPad3 from 5.1.1 to iOS 6 the best connection I seem to get is E. The same upgrade on my iPhone 4 worked perfectly fine and it connects by 3G where the iPad does not.

Maybe I have got a hint (and maybe not): On the iPad settings (I run a German version, hence I probably don't use the correct english items, but I put the German names in brackets, here Einstellungen) there is a "Mobile data" (Mobile Daten) item between Bluetooth and Personal Hotspot, on the iPhone this item's not there.
On the iPhone in settings / General (Allgemein) the first item on the second block says Mobile Net (Mobiles Netz), on the iPad this does not exist. With the Mobile Net item I have the sought after "Activate 3G" toggle, which does not exist on the above mentiones Mobile data item on the iPad.
I am not sure, if this has anything to do with the problem, but it sure is a difference.

  • ITunes 11.1 wont sync music to iPhone 4s

I'm having a problem with getting iTunes to sync music onto my iPhone 4s after updating to iOS 7 and iTunes 11.1. Tried restarting both devices and it didn't help. Hoping someone can help me with this problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    J_Workman

Hey everyone, I have also been having this problem and have finally found a solution that is not quite what anyone else has posted yet.
I actually haven't seen the "Syncing Music to iphone" since the new ios update so im quite happy..
Here are the steps that I took to solve:
    1. Turned off auto lock and password on iphone
    2. After connecting iphone on the summary page the only three boxes I have checked are Automatically sync when iphone is connected, sync only checked songs and videos, manually manage music and videos
    3. Now, click the On this iPhone tab. In the bottom right there are "setting" and "Autofill". Under "Settings" select replace all items when Autofilling. I also arbitrarily selected "reserve 1.12GB for disk use".
    5. Then I clicked "Autofill" and selected Replace Songs.
    6. Lastly I pressed "Sync" while I was still on the "On This iPhone" page.
    7. I was actually about to leave the computer and then I saw something magical..."Syncing Music".....Holy Sh...!!!
Notes:On the iPhone: WiFi, Bluetooth, Cellular, personal Hotspot and VPN are all disabled. I use PC. I have about 5000 songs. I do not use Match.
Before today I was also having a disc space issue with a large block of "other". I deleted the music data from my iphone and that fixed that problem, however, the phone was still not syncing the majority (4800 of 5000) songs.
I do not pay for icloud storage, I have never restored my iphone
*I also do not have the "Sync Music" box checked under the Music tab, however, simply doing this did not solve the problem

  • Itunes keeps turning on 'sync music' to iphone

Everytime I plug my iPhone in to my computer, iTunes will by itself toggle on 'sync music'. When I untoggle it and go back and hand add songs to the phone, it starts a sync process again and low and behold the sync music button is toggled on again! And the songs that I've just added by hand are removed from the phone again.
I recently used the sync to be able to delate some songs that had auto-download to my phone when I upgraded it to iOS7. These songs weren't appearing on the list of music when I hooked my iphone up and I wasn't able to delete them striaght from the phone either. I turned the sync off as soon as I got the songs deleted so I could go back in and add only the small number of songs I wanted to be on my phone.
I'm really at wits end at this point. I'd stop plugging the phone into my computer if I could, but its my only means of charging at the moment. Anyone else have this problem?

  • How do I install drivers to my iBookG4 13"?

My iBook G4 13" is not able to start and displays no kernel , driver
    found?

Sorry I didn't include the details.  I am using an iPhone 3GS, with iOS 5.1.1 installed.  I am trying to connect to a Windows 7 pc for internet access.  I have enabled Bluetooth AND personal hotspot on the phone, and can successfully tether using USB.  When I try using Bluetooth, it will not pair to the pc.  When I troubleshoot the issue, I receive a pop up box telling me that I need to install a driver for the device (the phone).  When I try to install the driver for the device, I get a message telling me that the driver device software was not successfully instatlled, because no driver was found.
iTunes IS installed and functioning properly.
I did not view the included documentation, as I did not find it during my search for the resolution.  Thank you for posting it, and I will review it now.  If I get a resolution, I will come back here and remove my question.

  • Handoff Iphone 6+ with brand new Macbook air

My iphone 6+ is managed by a device management profile. I verify with my corporate security and "Allow Handoff" is enable in the policies and I have the latest policies.  My macbook air can connect directly to my Iphone  6+ using Bluetooth and personal hotspot option. So I know I have Bluetooth connectivity with my Macbook Air. I also have my Ipad 2 connect via Bluetooth to my Macbook air without any trouble.
When I try to par my iphone 6+ to my Macbook air, I get the pairing notification on my phone. I click pair and it times out. On the macbook air I get the notification that network device is unavailable. I tried everything. I restart both iphone 6+ and Macbook air. I sign out and sign back in to Icloud. I am unable to pair my iphone 6+ to my Macbook air.
Anyone have any suggestion on how to resolve this connectivity issue ?

...I was planning on running Windows 7 on an external USB drive...
On other Macs, [it is not possible to run Windows from an external hard drive.|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3777] Something about Windows resetting the Firewire and USB ports during boot so Boot Camp only worked with a partition on an internal hard drive. I do not know if that had changed with the Macbook Air.
