Bluetooth + Airport disappearing - what's going on?

Hello everyone,
I bought a shiny new 15" MacBook Pro a few weeks ago, which ran fine for a week. Then, suddenly, my Bluetooth peripherals (mouse and keyboard) were disconnected. When I wanted to open the Bluetooth panel in System Preferences to see what had happened, it was gone - no Bluetooth panel, no Bluetooth option in the Network panel.
Several independent sites and help resources suggested resetting the SMC in this situation (by shutting the MacBook off and pressing Shift + Option + Command + Power), which I did, and after a restart, Bluetooth was available again.
The next day, my Mac suddenly froze - something I haven't seen in years.
When I restarted, my WiFi connection was gone, and the empty AirPort icon said "No AirPort Card installed".
Now I assumed this was a hardware defect, and made arrangements for repair.
But today, OS X's Software Update informed me about a 13 MB System update for systems were after a crash, turning Airport on or off isn't possible anymore. Great; just what the doctor ordered!
I installed this update right away and restarted.
And indeed, the AirPort icon now had a "Turn AirPort On" item in its submenu. Back in business!
But when I tried to turn AirPort on, the MacBook froze again, and now, I'm back to square one ("No AirPort Card installed").
By now, I'm pretty sure the AirPort hardware is actually broken, but maybe there is still a software issue.
So - is there someone who has experienced similar problems and can suggest what to do/try before sending the MacBook back to repair?

To anyone encountering the same problem: The WLAN module was broken, and it was replaced under warranty. The repair guy said that these modules may overheat, so you should try to keep your MacBook cool (not that I had put it on an oven ... ).

By reinstalling do you mean that you deleted the app and redownloaded it ? Deleting an app will remove the app and its contents. Do you have copies of the PDFs in the Books part of your computer's iTunes library so that you can sync them back ?

Flash sound stops working after I pair my Macbook Pro with a Bluetooth speaker. What's going on?

I have a 2012 17 inch MBP, and regularly pair it with a Jambox bluetooth speaker for music. After pairing it, sound frequently stops working in Flash - Youtube videos and the like. Only restarting seems to do the trick. What's disabling the sound, and is there a way to re-enable it without the hassle of restarting?

After removing adware, and do a safe boot of Safari and remove extensions, then reset cache history etc. You need to do a boot into Recovery Mode and run Disk Repair from there. Also boot the system in Safe Mode.
On startup it sounds like you have a problem with the directory which would also account for long startups and checking the directory. Along with or instead of DU Repair Disk you can use Single User Mode and fsck -fy to try to fix the directory but in some cases that may not be enough.
Backups from before you got this adware and problems helps and should always be ready and able to restore a system from known good backups or system restore image.
4GB of RAM may have been fine originally but "Early 2011" is now 5 years and 4 OS version changes. You can upgrade the memory and while at it consider a nice SSD internal drive which will help as well. Music temporarily disappeared - What's going on?

I have a 16 GB IPod Nano 5th Generation. I have lots of playlists, and over 14 GB of music.
I brought it to the gym today, and tried to play music with my headphones, but the IPod showed that I have no music and no playlists, and no songs. I said what??!! I went into settings, then "about", and it showed I have 0 GBs of audio and about 14.2 GBs of "other". I don't know what "other" is, but it appears that is where my music went. Normally "about" shows that I have 14.2 GBs of audio, not 14.2 GBs of "other". Later I tried to play the IPod in my car but it did not play music, probably because the music had disappeared.
I went home and plugged the IPod Nano into my Apple McIntosh computer. "Device" came up and it showed things back to normal - that I had loads of songs and playlists, and I was able to play the IPod playlist songs on my computer. Then I disconnected the IPod from the computer, and checked it. It showed that I did have all these songs and playlists, which had disappeared earlier when I was in the gym. I went into settings/about and it showed that I have 14.2 GB of audio, not 0 audio and 14.2 of "other" as earlier today. So it is back to normal since I plugged the IPod into the computer.
Please advise what happened at the gym today. I think I updated recently on my computer to the latest I Tunes 10.1.1(4). That shouldn't affect my IPod when I go to the gym, should it?

One thing I should mention. I was listening on the IPod's radio in the gym before I tried to play my music from my IPod's playlists. I almost never listen to the radio on my IPod. Could listening to the IPod's radio have something to do with the problem of the disappearance of all of my songs and playlists from my IPod?

ITunes cuts out when using Airport Extreme - what's going on here

I have a Powerbook G4 with both Airport Extreme (hooked into Comcast internet through ethernet) and Airport Express (hooked into stereo in the next room).
Where I used to live had the same set-up and had full 4 bars of reception. I moved this past weekend and had Comcast internet set up again in a different city (same set-up though)
Now I have maybe 2 bars of strength on the Airport Extreme and when playing music on the Airport Express it plays for maybe 5-6 seconds, cuts off, then comes back on. This cycle repeats.
When I hooked the ethernet directly into the Airport Express the music worked just fine.
Is the Airport Extreme dying on me? Please help.

Thanks - went to the Extreme and Express and turned on interference robustness. This helped in that now I have all 4 bars of signal strength.
Still getting the cut-off on the ITunes though. Have gotten the "error 3256" twice now and Itunes freezes. Looked it up online and it said the cause is a 3rd party router or firewall - I dont believe I am using either. Error 3256 means something is blocking the UDP traffic which causes the Itunes to turn off and on.
Am very frustrated Itunes wont work. Its only 15 feet from the Extreme Base Station. I moved the 5.8ghz cordless phone (8 feet away)and the Comcast VOIP phone modem (10 feet away in closed closet) but to no avail.

We use an Airport Extreme in my office, which works fine for me. Occasionally we need to have more than one computer running on it, but for some reason it won't connect to the internet. It says we have internet, but won't connect to wifi. What's going on?

I use my computer everyday in our office and have no issue connecting to the internet/wifi, but when my boss comes in and tries to connect it doesn't work. It tells her she has internet, but won't connect to the wifi. We've tried a few different tactics(the basic ones I've seen on here), but nothing seems to be working for us. My computer automatically connects to our wifi.
Just recently the Airport Extreme has started with the blinking amber colored light on the front, which I believe means something is wrong? Can anyone help us figure out what's going on and why we can't get my boss' computer to connect as it should?

Here's an update:
Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.

I just updated Creative Cloud and it disappeared from my desktop. In my profile, there is no longer a subscription to Creative Cloud--Just Photoshop for CS3 customers. What is going on?

A few minutes ago I got a Creative Cloud update notification. I ran the update and Creative Cloud disappeared from my desktop. What happened? I still have Photoshop CC and Bridge CC. But will I still get CC updates? Also I no longer seem to have a Creative Cloud subscription--just something that looks like a monthly fee for keeping Photoshop for customers with Photoshop CS3+. What is going on?

I just had an online Chat with Adobe Support, and we uninstalled CC Desktop and reinstalled it. That fixed the problem. I have no idea what CAUSED the problem though.

I had restored my iPhone 5 to factory settings and that cleared the problematic "Other" problem. Flash forward a couple weeks and the problem has once again resurfaced.
I tried updating iTunes and iOS to the newest versions and the problem still persists.
I'm officially ready to switch to Windows Phone or Android now...

All of my bookmarks have disappeared. I have tried all of your suggested remedies with no luck. PLUS I can't even new bookmarks. What's going on?

The day after Thanksgiving I had access to all of my bookmarks. There were no updates I entered for Firefox. In the late afternoon I tried to continue my work and all of my bookmarks had disappeared. I thought it was just a glitch. Went directly to the site and tried to re-enter my bookmark and Firefox will not accept it. What is going on?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

i watched this happen several times...i requested an email notification from wordpress over and over to see if i could click on the email in inbox fast enough to open it before it went to never neverland but nada. could not be done. i turned off the junk mail sorter in preferences. even though it was not to be found in junk mail on my mail app or icloud mail or iphone nada...what else is dissappearing?

The missing Albums may be ones where the Artist is not listed as also being the Album Artist in the tag. Try going to Settings>Music and turn Group By Album Artist to Off. See if the missing albums now show in the Artist view. If so, you can either leave the setting this way, or if you prefer it to be on, go to iTunes on your computer and put the correct name in the Album Artist field of the tag (on the Info tab of the tab) for the albums in question and sync your phone.

Actually all are affected, but i manage to solved it running Virtual test version to trace the issue and finally able to fix it. Thanks for asking.

There are reports of similar behavour but generally it is due to battery connections. Is the indicator light working steadily or does it blink or even not function. Here is the Apple document dealing with some of the problems.

Is your machine within the guarantee period or under Apple care. If so, return it to any apple retailer for examination and possible replacement.

10.4.9 upgrade - now missing Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight..

This week Software Update invited me to upgrade from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9. I accepted.
But when I restarted, all the info on the right hand of the menu bar - Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight. - had disappeared. Additionally, the iMac was working very slowly indeed.
I initially used Disk Utility to Repair Permissions and Verify Disk to no avail- no problems reported.
I then used the Combo Updater after reading concerns about the Software Update: still no improvement.
I have since run Onyx, which has speeded everything up - but still no Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight, etc. I am very disappointed by this, and have warned colleagues NOT to take to upgrade to 10.4.9 until we know what has happened and how to fix it.
Question to Apple: IS THIS UPGRADE FLAWED?
Meanwhile, repair suggestions gratefully received.... I really would like my Clock, Bluetooth, Airport, Volume, Spotlight etc. back.

Thanks for this. Actually, I looked at this after the earlier posting. These menu items were not apparent in this folder, nor discoverable through the Find menu.
Back to my earlier concern. We ALL want more people to embrace Macs as a genuine alternative to PCs. True or false? If true, isn't one of the real sales points that modern Macs are now robust, and don't go wrong? Virus-free, solid, beautifully designed, built to last and so on.....
I have been using Macs for almost 20 years. I have contributed software reviews to various Mac publications. I have advised international companies on adapting their products for Macs. I battle to persuade institutions like banks to make their software products available on the Mac platform. With colleagues, I have built a very influential international media business using Macs alone. We run a hugely successful radio station using Macs.
But if, with all our experience, we can't sort out a problem triggered by a Software Update, what earthly hope has the average new Mac user? 9/10, he or she will not even know about these Discussion forums. There is NO warning message with the update. No-one tells you you may have to dump a .plist, There is NOTHING on the official side of the Support pages - even if the average new Mac user knows they even exist.
If Apple wants to be taken seriously, spend a little more testing upgrades before releasing them. Yes, Steve, this is for you, though I doubt your subordinates will dare show it to you.... prove it by replying!

CANNOT properly update from 7.0 to 7.01. WHAT is going on?

I notice that FIREFOX has been releasing browser updates quite frequently as of late. I have been updating my browser as they come along ... until 7.01 came out. It not only does NOT fully install on my IMac (iMac 10,1 - 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor - less than 1 year old) ... but is being incredibly vexing:
I did the usual update process for 7.01 when presented with the SOFTWARE UPDATE WINDOW (as I recall; less than 1 WEEK after I rcvd an UPDATE for 7.0, which installed normally enough) - but the 7.01 dropped a Firefox icon on my desktop, which I put in my APPLICATIONS FOLDER. This did not MOVE the icon. Inexplicably it only COPIED it to the folder - leaving a FIREFOX icon still on my desktop. I then put THAT ONE in a special FIREFOX folder that I keep for general Firefox info, etc. SAME RESULT ... only COPIED icon to that folder. ALSO a Firefox "volume" appeared on my desktop. Normally these disappear upon exiting my system and coming back. in THIS CASE, both the Firefox ICON - AND the VOLUME icon remain - for weeks now. I can't REMOVE them without taking them to the trash, which I am loathe to do, fearing I would LOSE FIREFOX COMPLETELY from my system.
I find that FIREFOX 7.o is what my system is still running - it does not seem to recognize the 7.01 that arrived, in any way.
Meanwhile, I continue to get the SOFTWARE UPDATE (for 7.01) window appearing when I open my (7.0) browser). I tried AGAIN to install from that - and only got MORE icons growing on my desktop.
By the way, I have a YAHOO/ATT eMail - AND a YAHOO Homepage. YAHOO often causes interfering and/or site-specific browser problems. THIS may be a factor. I have NO idea.
MY GUESS is that something(?) did not complete - or get recognized in the INSTALL PROCESS (with the install window/process/move to app. folder sequence.
WHAT I NEED is:
1) to be able to successfully, completely UPDATE to 7.01 -and
2) have these fool icons quit reappearing (and multiplying upon dragging them to folders).
I assume that once 7.01 IS fully installed, that all of this nonsense will stop; I will not see "NEW UPDATE TO 7.01" windows appear / I will NOT have "sticky" icons crowding my desktop / my SYSTEM WILL then SHOW "FIREFOX 7.01" as my current browser.
WHAT IS GOING ON? WHAT DO I DO FROM HERE?
I am at a complete loss (baffled, frustrated, kicked to the curb).
I am not familiar with sophisticated programmer / developer terms/shorthand. PLEASE, anybody answering this (thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!) write clearly and simply, so I am not stumped by being told to do something that I cannot figure out the meaning of ... I see that kind of answer in some other posts I viewed, trying to find what to do, though none of those posts were exactly my scenario.
All I want to do is get 7.01 to fully install, as/per the usual installation package process that appears when an UPDATE is downloaded.

I have no idea if I have a 'users.js file' anywhere; let alone in my 'profile' ...WHAT profile? where?? why? I have never needed to know anything about a users.js file to download or update a browser of any kind.
Nonetheless, IF a 'users.js file' is something that exists, behind the scenes, appearing something like "general.useragent.override" I would have no idea how to locate - or check whether or not I have one. You say it would be in my "profile". A "Firefox" profile? A MAC system profile? A hard disk profile? A Utilities profile? I have no idea what / where this may be.
I will try the suggestion by cor-el: Download a 7.01 - SAVE the dmg (slippery suckers, hard to find again, once arrived). Then I will isolate that in a special folder and remove my current FIREFOX from my computer; and open/install the 7.01 clean.
The only problem is I don't know exactly WHAT is mucking things up for the 7.01 to fully install. THEREFOR it seems I will have to search out and destroy all the parts of my CURRENT browser (icons/volumes/files/ et al) ...hoping that I DO remove the nasty part - and that I DO NOT remove something I need to either (A): keep my extremely deep bookmark files and/or (B): allow 7.01 on my system (as it IS an UPDATE - if I have NO "7.0" - can a "7.0.1" load / install without something already in the 7's to work from?)
I was hoping to avoid this 'search and destroy' raid on my Firefox, for the above reasons; but since I have NO idea what the "user.js file" or its attendant "profile" are, I see no alternative. Unless somebody has a better idea before Monday; I'll go in there and tear it out - after bringing in the dmg of 7.01 first. It'll be a crapshoot; maybe I'll luck out. I HOPE so, 'cause I really hate Safari. Wheeeeeeeeee!
