Bluetooth, Airport, sound icons in Menu bar flashing

I just recently bought a new iMac and installed Leopard but I am having a problem with the Bluetooth, Airport and speaker icons on the menu bar, they keep flashing, and when I went into system preferences I found that each items checkbox to show in the menu bar was unchecked, and when I tried to check them they kept flashing to unchecked. I hope this doesn't sound too confusing, but it's driving me mad.

I don't know if this is going to help anyone, but I found this message after I encountered the very same problem. I had just upgraded to Leopard and everything was fine except the flashing Bluetooth, Sound and Login icons on the right hand right of the Finder menu. Also, the clock wasn't visible at all. As Kevwadd said, enabling these items in System Prefs did nothing, as they would uncheck themselves as soon as I checked them.
After trying just about everything, I decided to disconnect my external drives and hubs to see if it made any difference? Hey presto, when I disconnected one particular Lacie firewire drive, my menu items reappeared. The strange thing is that my Mac could read the data quite happily on the drive, but having it connected was definitely the cause of the problem. So I backed up the data on it and reformatted it. After that it's been fine.

  • Airport Disk Utility does not show up as icon on menu bar

Since I upgraded to Leopard, the icon for Airport Disk Utility which used to appear in the menu bar at the top of the screen has gone away. Any ideas please? Perhaps it's a coincidence but after the install of Leopard, the Airport Disk Utility application disappeared! I reinstalled it from the Airport Express Base Station SW and it has appeared in Applications again. I can start it up, select 'Show Airport Disks in the Menu Bar' but they don't appear ...
    Any ideas please?

I believe the disk Utility is now incorporated under FINDER/ SHARED / Airport network name. There should be an ejection/mount arrow beside the disk name. In my case I have two USB disks attached 1: "My Book" [NSTF format, 2: G-DRIVE [MAC format]. The "My Book" always mounted automatically but the"G-DRIVE" would not.
    The work around was to
    1. Connect the G-DRIVE with a wire directly to your computer [I used the firewire]. It will mount and give you an icon under FINDER/DEVICES. The hard drive was actively working on something for about 2 minutes (you could hear it).
    2. After the G-DRIVE hard drive stopped making noise. I Ejected it with the arrow beside the Disk name in the DEVICES Section.
    3. Then I plugged the G-DRIVE back into the Hub connected to the single Airport Extreme USB connection.
    4. Now both Hard Drives showed up under SHARED /Network name With the Eject arrow beside them.
    5. I verified there use by transferring a file and using Backup 3.1.2 (ver374) to backup my documents to the G-DRIVE hard drive.
Note: I had to go this once when I installed Leopard 10.5 and had to do it again when IK upgraded to 10.5.1
    Hope this helps

  • Please Help SL - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing

Please Help. Snow Leopard - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing.
Basically, I have been using snow leopard for about 1-2 weeks now without any problems, apart from the strange trackpad expose glitch, but I can live with that. But a new problem has arisen that I CANNOT live with. Basically I plugged in my MiniDisplay > VGA adaptor and a Wacom internet tablet for the first time. And when it booted up rather than just the usual spinning gear, their was a progress bar as-well. Then it booted into Safe Mode.?
Everything was fine in safe mode apart from spotlight didn't work properly so I rebooted and this time it loaded normally. EXCEPT about 5 minutes after I logged on the top menu bar started to flash on and off about ever 1-2 seconds and virtually every single application would quit unexpectedly before even loading. I haven't really looked into it apart from a quick search on google which doesn't seem to bring up anything similar, but atm I am having to use my bootcamp partition with windows installed (shock horror :D) just so I can browse the internet.
    Additional details -
I have tried resetting PRAM + NVRAM with no joy
While logging on (before it crashes), menu items (e.g. Airport, Battery Indicator, Facebook Notifier) all load up on the far right BEFORE the clock, which never happened before the problem, don't know if this will help isolate the problem, but its worth mentioning..
Don't really want to go down the fresh install route if possible, as I did this with leopard about 2 months before Snow Leopard was released

I noticed it some weeks after installing Snow Leopard, and didn't think much about it since I have a Wacom mouse, and the Wacom driver often has some little peculiarities at startup with the Mac OS--sometimes everything is perfectly ordinary, there will be an OS update and a little oddness shows up, the driver eventually gets updated and the oddness disappears until some other OS update, and so on. I just figured that was what it was until my brother asked about the missing the menu bar after startup, which reappears with a click. He doesn't use a Wacom mouse, but he does have some other 3rd party mouse. I don't know whether 3rd party mouse drivers are at fault or not. But it is not a problem with the SystemUIServer.....the entire menu bar is missing, not just a goof-up on the Spotlight end, where SystemUIServer is in charge of things. Since simply clicking the mouse brings the menu bar up I've never even bothered to check the logs to see if anything is noted there.

  • Menu Bar Flashes On and Off

The right side of my menu bar flashes on and off every few seconds. It's there for a second or two then disappears for a second or two. Is there a way I can get this to stop?
It did this when I first got my MBP a few weeks ago and simply opening an app fixed it, now it just keeps flashing on and off.
    Thanks

this means that SystemUIServer keeps crashing. delete the file
/users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and run the following terminal command
    killall SystemUIServer

  • No icons on menu bar

I previously had spotlight, time, language, ect. icons on the menu bar but now there is only the gmail icon. I tried clicking on the options of adding icons on menu bars, but it doesn't work. For example, i click "show time and date" and when i switch panes, it resets itself. Spotlight and others doesn't work either. So if anybody can help, I really appreciate it.

    Hi, Dale —
Seems as if there've been a lot of folks lately who've encountered problems with SystemUIServer — the process that manages the right-hand side of the menu bar.
Troubleshooting this may require several rounds of interacting. For now, try these:
    (1) Delete the preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist, restart, and reset as required in System Preferences
    (2) Disable all "system enhancers" — including especially any 3rd-party Menu Extras — that you may have installed. Some of these may show up in System Preferences »» Other. In particular, disable or uninstall Application Enhancer (APE) if it's there.
Please post back to share your progress, and we'll take it from there
    HTH!
    Regards,
    Dean

  • ITunes icon in menu bar

I was looking at a friend's Powerbook G4, he had an iTunes icon (rewind/play-pause/ff) icon in menu bar, next to clock etc.
I can't work out how that icon gets there.
    Any clues please?
    My iTunes is 5.0.1 (4)
btw - my friend has gone away, so can't ask him!

It' not an iTunes feature. Some 3rd party applications can put some items in the menubar.
Go to versiontracker.com and search for 'itunes menubar'.
You will find a few applications that can do what you have seen.

  • Unwanted MobileMe icon in menu bar

    This is what I did:
I went online and ordered a power adapter replacement for my iPhone. I was asked for my Mac Support username and pw.
Then, after doing so, the MobileMe icon suddenly appears on my menu bar. (I've never subscribed to this).
I then went to system prefs then MoblileMe (wanting to remove said icon from menu bar). I was told that I had changed my password and that I should type in my new one (?). I tried a few of my pw's (for the heck of it) to no avail. I'm now unable to get into MobileMe prefs and I seem to be stuck staring at this (ugly) icon. I checked my keychains, nothing.
(I did do the 6-month trial on .Mac when I got my MB last Feb. but I wasn't into it. The pw I had for that's not working either.)
    Any suggestions?

This is the iSync forum. The MobileMe forums are here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=116
Anyway, an 'ugly' MobileMe icon in your menu bar? Do you mean the Sync icon, which looks like 2 arrows in a circular formation?
If so, to get rid of it just hold down the command key (to the left of the space bar) and drag it out of the menu bar.

  • No airplay icon in menu bar

no airplay icon in menu bar (Apple tv 3, mavericks)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You will see the AirPlay icon on the menu bar by two reasons:
    1. Your computer is compatible with AirPlay Mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
    2. Your computer has detected an Apple TV in the network.
If both things are done, you will see the AirPlay icon. You can see which Mac you have got in  > About this Mac > More Info. If your computer isn't compatible, you can use an application like Beamer or AirParrot

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

  • Missing airport icon in menu bar HELP PLEASE

Okay, I have a g4 powerbook that came with tiger.
I am missing the airport icon that once was there in the menu bar at the top right-hand side.
What I've done: ran disk utility, = all's well, check for software updates = all's well there too., and the most obvious, check the box under system pref. for airport config.
I check it and it is does, nothing. I go back to system pref. and is unchecked again.
IM AT A LOSS. Anyone with this problem PLEASE help.
    thanks...

    muecyl,
Do not concern yourself with the other files that you found at that location. Just leave them where they are.
Since your problem is also related to some extent to System Preferences, you may benefit from trying the procedures outlined by Dr. Smoke in Try the following....
Another possibility is to download and reinstall the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo for PPC.

  • Bluetooth icon in menu bar always showing

When using a wireless keyboard and mouse, the checkbox "Show Bluetooth in the menu bar" in the System Preferences has no effect. When turned off, the icon still shows up after any restart.

    Hi again:
I am puzzled (no help to you). Mine is always on, but I have not tested turning it off and then restarting (I almost always sleep my Macs). If I think of it, I will try what you have done to see if it is "normal" or not.
I do not know of another setting (besides the plist file) that would affect that function.

  • Bluetooth icon in menu bar vanished after 10.4.4 update

Like the subject says, in short, the bluetooth icon on the menu bar (or whatever idiom is used for it) vanished. I'm using a 12" 1.33 GHz iBook, just updated to 10.4.4. I know for a fact it's just the icon, and nothing's broken with bluetooth, because I can still activate it from the preferences panel. Any ideas?

I have turned on all of my menu bar items (AirPost, Bluetooth, Displays etc.). Sometimes I do find that a few disappear, though they either disapperar entirely, or just leave a blank space where they were. In the latter, I just have to click on the space and it reappears. However, in the former case it is a matter of going into System Preferences and deselecting/selecting "Show Bluetooth Status In Menu bar".
    Hope that fixes it

  • Bluetooth icon in menu bar, how to remove?

I have a Ti 500 PB. I exchanged HD's with my son's Al PB for a while (long story). Well we exchanged HD's back and now I have the bluetooth icon in the menu bar. How do I remove it since in system preferences there is no bluetooth preference to set it up? This PB does not have bluetooth. I am sure there is a terminal command to do this, I didn't see anything in CockTail.

Click on it with the Command key held down and drag it out of the menu bar.
