Bluetooth dongles and Tiger

I have a G4 iMac running MacOS 10.4.10.
I've been considering buying an aftermarket Bluetooth USB dongle so that I can use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with my iMac.
I noticed a cheapie dongle on a mail-order web-site I source my blank DVD-Rs from:
http://meritline.stores.yahoo.net/usb-bluetooth-wireless-dongle-adapter.html
I notice the mail-order page lists compatibility with various flavors of Windows but no mention of the MacOS. Should I be concerned by this? Is there some specification I should look for?

The D-Link uses the same chip that Apple uses. It even works with the Apple Bluetooth firmware updates, so if Apple adds new supported devices, it will still work. Other models may work, but there is no guarantee they will handle the same devices as the Apple or D-Link unit. They may work with the devices you need, though.

  • Bluetooth Dongles and Headsets

I've got a Bluetooth headset which pairs fine with my Powerbook with built-in Bluetooth, but I need to get a dongle that with work with my iBook G4 for Skype.
I'd like to hear from people what dongles they are using successfully with headsets. I know that the D-link DBT-120 is recommended by Apple, however, when I called D-link Support, they insisted that headsets were NOT supported by it.
I'm obviously not having much luck getting consistent info, so I'd appreciate only personal experience, not heresay, on which dongles have worked properly with headsets.
    Many thanks,
    Allan

Use that little search box at the upper right…
Using a headset needs several steps even needed if you have the latest computer or Mac OS X release. Please make sure to follow them in order.
Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
    Install it
Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
Apply it to your adapter (takes very long).
Start the Apple Bluetooth Assistant and select Headset. Do not use anything else!
Make your headset Bluetooth visible. Look up the manual of your headset how to do that.
Now select the headset in System Preferences > Sound.
In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the already installed updater yourself (do not ask me why). Step 4 fails if your Bluetooth USB adapter is not supported by Apple and you have to go for a D-Link DBT-120 USB adapter.

  • Toshiba Bluetooth Headphones and Tiger?

I'm well aware that the product is meant for a PC, but has anyone successfully, or knows of any way, to use the Toshiba bluetooth headphones with a Mac? I can pair them using the D-Link DBT-120 adapter (pre-firmware updater as an "other" device, post-firmware updater, as a headset) and I also have a Targus Bluetooth 1.2 USB adapter that I can pair with the headset. In Bluetooth preferences it is listed as an audio type, but it never shows up in the Sound preferences.

I am also wondering about using bluetooth headphones to listen to audio from my iBook. I just bought a pair of Combi AP11 bluetooth headphones. I know they come with an adapter for the iPod mini, but I am wondering if anyone has been able to get a pair of bluetooth heaphone running through OSX?

  • 8Bananas Bluetooth Dongle and Stereo Headset Review/Opinion

Anyone using the 8Bananas dongle or stereo bluetooth headset? I have searched for a review but I haven't found anything informative yet. RIght now they are selling the pair for $99, which seems like a fair deal.

How about you go read my original post before offering your opinion. I am not asking for anybody to do anything for me. I want to know about any first hand experience from somebody that owns the product. I am requesting this because there are no reviews that I know of.

  • Satellite C660-108 does not boot if USB Bluetooth dongle connected

    Hiya,
I hope you would help me.
I am having an issue with my bluetooth dongle and satellite c660-108.
It works all perfectly. It connects devices via bluetooth and I can do everything I want.
But then when I am shutting down laptop and turning on again it won't go if the bluetooth dongle is still in the usb socket.
I see Toshiba screen and then it hangs with black screen and blinking cursor in top left corner.
I have to turn it off, take out the bluetooth dongle and then turn it on again.
And then windows starts. After that I have to put in bluetooth dongle again if I want to work with it.
It is not a huge issue but it is a bit annoying when I have to take out the bluetooth and put it back again to get the windows started.
I am currently running under win 8.1 but had it already with win 8.
    Anybody any ideas??

    >I see Toshiba screen and then it hangs with black screen and blinking cursor in top left corner.
Mostly the blinking cursor appears because the notebook cannot find an bootable device.
It looks like the unit cannot switch to the HDD while the USB dongle is connected.
I would recommend you checking the booting order in the BIOS.
Set the HDD at the first place and the USB as last possible booting device.
Save the changes and check if it helps.

  • What is required for Bluetooth mouse and keyboard?

I am thinking of buying a wireless keyboard and mouse and want to make sure I can do it on this iMac G4 computer, bought in 2003. I ran the system profiler and see no information on Bluetooth. If I bought the Apple wireless mouse and keyboard and the D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth Adapter, would that be all I need? Is the installation of these things straighforward so that I could do it at home? Is it likely to work well?

    Hello James:
The Bluetooth dongle and the BT mouse and KB are the only things you would need. I found that setting up (pairing) the mouse and KB are straightforward and easy.

I have just bought the MSI BToes Bluetooth Dongle and when i tried to install it, it kept saying that the device cannot be found, i downloaded the latest driver and software and that installed it fine. But it asked for the serial number on the dongle but i do not have one. I went to the WIDCOMM website and it asked for the device address, but i cannot gather mine because the software that i need is not installed because it needs the serial number, and the serial number needs the device address
Can you please help me get out of the never ending circle, PLEASE

  • Re@lted t0 bluetooth dongle, stack and configuration.. .......

    Hi to all,
Those r new or require some more info realted to STACK and statring the prohect read the following page
    http://www.cs.hku.hk/~fyp05016/kyng/bt_j9.htm
This is may be benifical to u.
Anyhow, i am making the my final year project related to Bluetooth and i am trying to use AVETANA which can be dowloaded from the following link:
    http://www.avetana-gmbh.de/avetana-gmbh/downloads/relicense.idmexieubncmqxqphuvrohkpjcgwbv.eng.xml
After u visit this link u will see that, avetana require three bluetooth address. I have inputed the address 22:22:22:22:22:22 ( or 22-22-22-22-22-22). I have extracted this address from start-run-ipconfig/all after i install the device dirver software "BlueSoleil_1.6.2.1" in Win XP OS. My bluetooth dongle is "ISSC Bluetooth Device" which i extracted from Device Manager (Start - Right Click My computer - Properties - Hardware - Device Manager). Moreover my VID and UID of the bluetooth dongle is "USB\VID_1131&PID_1001". I have even cheked the microsoft XP site
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841803/
for the sake of conformation that whether my bluetooth dongle is supported my Win XP sp2 and the above VID and UID is not present there.
Now the problem is that site doesnot accept my above written address, and so i am unable to download the avetana,,,
In the end(after searching on the net) I have concluded that might the following reason may be there:
    1) my bluetooth dongle is either of some local company manufacturer which is not recognized by win XP
    2) i am using wrong device driver
    3) i am unable to configure properly the bluetooth device.
Moreover, even after installing the device driver (BlueSoleil_1.6.2.1) i am unable to see any bluetooth icon in the Control panel so that i can see/change the bluetooth property.
    Plz help me up..
and if i am thinking correct, which company dongle i should purchase or which other bluetooth stack (say like atinav, BlueCove) i should use...
I even want to know that with respect to stack (say atinav) i need to purchase the dongle or not..
moreover, i donot want to buy any stack as this is only my academic project so i donot have so much money to buy a stack (like atinav)
    thx in advance..

  • 6233 and bluetooth/dongles

i also think the 6233 is a great phone - i tried an N70 before that and hated it - it was slow and kept crashing, i sent it back and got the 6233
My problem is that if i try to connect to my computer with bluetooth it tells me (the PC) that it can't. do i need a dongle?? and what's a dongle for (sounds rude, to me)
    thanks

your PC need to be equipped with Bluetooth hardware. It can bee inbuilt Bluetooth radio receiver or you can go and buy a Bluetooth USB "stick" or "dongle" and attach that to your PC USB port in order to make it work as Bluetooth device.
Bear in mind, that there are several Bluetooth softwares available for Windows and not all of them are compatible with Nokia PC Suite.
    PC Suite is compatible with:
Bluetooth Microsoft Windows XP Bluetooth (included in XP SP2), Toshiba Bluetooth stack for Windows XP/2000 version 4.0, Widcomm BTW 1.4, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, IVT BlueSoleil Bluetooth stack for Windows XP/2000, driver version 1.6.1.4*

  • Mini bluetooth dongle

    Hi all.
For my g4, 12 inch, it already has bluetooth.
I recently was given a small, JVC-NX PS1 stereo system that's ipod compatible. As I don't have an ipod, I wanted to buy one of those tiny bluetooth dongles to play my music through-- it's mp3, and wma compatible, and was curious if the Tiger 10.4.11 would have any issues with recognizing those. Most of the reviews I've read on them are windows based discussions.
Has anyone done anything like that, and has some experiences to share?
Thanks in advance for your feedbacks.....

drivers are built into your version of OS X (tiger).
here are the ones compatible for sure: http://eshop.macsales.com/search/bluetooth

  • Need advice on bluetooth driver and software download

*PLEASE HELP*: just bought a Nexus bluemicro pro bluetooth v2.1 dongle. and ive damaged the disk it came with when I was opening the packet.
The disk says: Toshiba bluetooth driver and software bluetooth BT1.2/2/0/2.1.
Does anyone know if there is a download for this online somewhere or will I have to go out and buy another one? I'm not clued up when it comes to computers and would very much appreciate any advice and help.... I;m using windows vista so it would have to be compatible.

On Toshiba support and download page you can download Toshiba BT stack but it is for usage with Toshiba notebooks.
You bought non-Toshiba product so for download contact Nexus or visit Nexus support page.

  • How can I tell whether my Mac Pro is using the bluetooth dongle or not?

I got myself a bluetooth dongle to get around the terrible internal BT signal. When it's in use, it alleviates all my troubles and I can actually stroll halfway down the hall and still type accurately.
However, it seems that every time I reboot, it must stop using the dongle and use the internal, because I then get the terrible signal of the internal antenna. The only way to convince my computer to use the dongle, is to unplug and plug it back in. Then I have to delete all my bluetooth devices and pair them again!
So yes, I am seeking a two-part solution.
Firstly, I'd like to know if there's anywhere in System Profiler, BT Preferences, Terminal, etc that will just inform me of WHICH bluetooth my computer is using.
Secondly, I'd ideally want to set it to default to the dongle. If this isn't possible, at least the first part would let me know when I need to arduously re-do my settings.
Thank you very, very much. Usually this isn't that big an issue, as I only rarely need to move my peripherals off my desk, but I got a Magic Mouse earlier this week and its extremely clear it doesn't have as strong an antenna or whatever as the Mighty Mouse, and it starts going erratic if I move it so much as a foot from the Mac Pro tower.

I have the same problem and I cannot find any way to turn off the internal bluetooth without killing all bluetooth including the dongle. If someone has a way to turn off the internal bluetooth I want to see it.
    Thanks

    Hi X42:
Your last paragraph intrigued me as I had the same impression:
I thought unlicensed BT devices were legally limited by the FCC to about 30 feet (3 meters)
Actually, 30 feet is 10 meters.
Anyway, I researched and found this as part of a Wikipedia item:
Bluetooth is a standard wire-replacement communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range (power-class-dependent, but effective ranges vary in practice; see table below) based on low-cost transceiver microchips in each device.[7] Because the devices use a radio (broadcast) communications system, they do not have to be in visual line of sight of each other, however a quasi optical wireless path must be viable.[2]
    Class
    Maximum Permitted Power
    Range
    (approximate)
    mW
    dBm
    Class 1
    100
    20

    Class 2
    2.5
    4
    ~10 meters
    Class 3
    1
    0
    ~5 meter
The effective range varies due to propagation conditions, material coverage, production sample variations, antenna configurations and battery conditions. In most cases the effective range of class 2 devices is extended if they connect to a class 1 transceiver, compared to a pure class 2 network. This is accomplished by the higher sensitivity and transmission power of Class 1 devices.[8]
Apparently there are BT devices that will transmit about 300 feet.  I did look at the FCC site, but quickly became confused in the technbabble.

  • Inbuilt bluetooth + Bluetooth dongle on macbook pro

    Hi,
Is it possible to use an external bluetooth dongle + inbuilt bluetooth on macbook together.
Idea is to connect bluetooth mouse and speaker to inbuilt bluetooth and keyboard to external dongle... Experiencing crappy connection when all is connected to my macbook at once especially the keyboard.
I'm running mavericks. Heard that bluetooth dongles don't work on it anymore...??? Is it true???

I have certainly never tried what you depict. IMHO, that would not work.
