Bluetooth grayed out in preferences

In system preferences bluetooth is permanently grayed out, I can't check it on.  Same with the bluetooth symbol up in the munu bar.
If I go to mouse preferences, and can click on the button there to turn on the bluetooth, and it asks for my login name and password.  I enter them, and then bluetooth is on.  But then if I pick up my MacBook and walk away, breaking the connection with the mouse, bluetooth is again grayed out. --Until I go to mouse preferences and do the same password routine again.
What do I have to do to correct this?
If going into X11 will get the job done, then someone tell me exactly what to type.
Thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Radio option grayed out in preferences?

I do not have the Radio feature in my sidebar, and when I go into Preferences, the Radio option is grayed out and cannot be selected. What do I need to do to activate the Radio? I'm using iTunes 10. Thanks.

It was the same with me. It's strange because I had never even entered the parental control section, but checked anyways and it was blocked!
    Problem solved, thanks!

  • Macbook pro, magic mouse, bluetooth grayed out

    Hi all,
My macbook pro is about 4 years old now.  Works great except I just developed an issue with the bluetooth that is affecting the usage of my magic moust.
    Some info about the macbook:
    17inch
    Macbook pro 5.2
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    2.8GHz
    8GB ram
    Running OSX 10.6.8
The issue with the bluetooth is: when the macbook pro goes to sleep and then wakes back up, the magic mouse does not work.  If I go into the bluetooth settings from the top dropdown menu, it says it is connected.  I have tried turning off the mouse before/after closing the computer, but it does not help.  I also tried pushing down on the mouse and it still won't reconnect.
I attempted to turn the bluetooth off and back on, but I can't.  The "Bluetooth:on" is grayed out.  I went into the bluetooth settings in the control panel and it won't allow me to turn the bluetooth off there either.
The only way I can get the computer to work with the mouse is to turn it off an turn it on again, but if it goes to sleep, they stop working together.  I have fresh batteries in the mouse
Does anybody have any ideas of what I can do to fix this issue?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, unfortunately I do, and it seems (in my case to have to do with the laptop, not the mouse). My mouse is about two feet away from the laptop and it stutters often. Then, when I move closer it appears to work smoother. I tried another magic mouse (that I know to work well, when paired to an iMac) with the same result. Unfortunately, my desk is setup in such a way that I have to change hands in order to move the mouse closer, so this is not an option. I think it must be a bluetooth issue with my Macbook Pro (2007 with a recent motherboard because of the nvidia bug issue), but it only started after using the magic mouse.
Is this a known issue, or does anyone know an easy fix?

  • Podcasts, Radio and Genius grayed out in Preferences

I'd like to try getting into Podcasts. I have one that I'd like to listen to but don't know how....as there is no Podcasts section in the iTunes window to click on. Can't seem to download. Perhaps I unchecked these 3 sections when I first installed or reinstalled iTunes but there's got to be a way (though I can't see it) to check one or more of these sections to bring them back. There's probably some very basic mistake that I'm making.... but right now I'm so confused about what to do. After (or if?) I have the podcasts in my iTunes I'd like to listen to them on my iPhone too. Thanks for any help....

Oops.... asked the wrong question before in search....but got it moments after the post (go to Parental prefs)....sorry I didn't search properly to begin with, and thanks to this Discussion!

  • Grayed-out airport and bluetooth options (pulldown-menu)

    Hi,
since the last week, i got some trouble with pulldown-menus of the desktop menu-bar.
everything in an apple (no third-party stuff) pulldown menu is grayed-out.

still i can change these options through the system preferences.
i tried the basic, "switch of and on" but this does not work.
because i do not have any more ideas and this problem is a little peeving, i hope someone here can help me.

  • ICal uses up my screen showing grayed-out hours of the night when I do not have appointments - support instructions about Preferences do not work.

iCal has preferences that let you decide how many hours per day you want to see, and which hours of the day you want to make appointments. For example, I need to see 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and I don't need to make appointments for the night. If I specify in my prefs that my "day starts at 7 am" and "day ends at 8 pm," when I look at my screen it still shows me all 24 hours---with nighttime grayed out.
This also happens if I change the number of hours I ask to be shown, in preferences again. For example, if I specify that I want to make appointments for 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., that totals ten hours. Whether I click "Show 24 hours" or "Show 10 hours," I still have those grayed-out, useless nighttime hours taking up my screen and forcing me to scroll when I don't want to scroll. I don't want my day to start at 1 a.m. When I click onto a day, I want to see 7 a.m. at the top of the screen.
I'm on Snow Leopard, iMac intel duo, running iCal 4.0.4 .
Here are the official support directions/instructions for this.
"To change the time range that appears in the main calendar view, choose iCal > Preferences and click General. To change the range of time when you’re normally available each day, choose your daytime hours from the “Day starts at” and “Day ends at” pop-up menus. All times outside that range are shaded in the day or week calendar view.To set the number of hours that are displayed when you view your calendar in Day or Week view, choose a number from the Show pop-up menu."
It mentions these unavailable hours will be "shaded," but my issue isn't whether or not they are shaded (I don't much care) but the fact that I don't want to see them on my screen and be forced to scroll a lot.
I took screen grabs of these calendars and corresponding Preferences settings, but apparently I'm supposed to go into Photoshop and resize them, etc etc, in order to upload them to this forum. Not going to do it. I hope my description above is clear enough.

  • I can't log onto facetime on my mac.  My apple ID and password is correct and it is working on my ipad/iphone.  My facetime preferences is grayed out and I keep having to turn facetime on.  My screen gets stuck on signing in or verifying.

I have used facetime on my mac recently and have not had this problem until today.  Facetime seems to have logged out on all of my devices but after putting my password in on my iphone/ipad it is back to normal however my Macbook will not allow me to log in.  I also noticed that facetime preferences is grayed and I keep trying to turn facetime on and that is graying out as well.  I put in my email and password and I get stuck on "signing in".  Or I get past that and I verify my email and password and I get stuck on "verifying" only to get booted back to the sign in page.  My OS is up to date, my wifi is on and working and I have no firewall on my home network.  I cannot figure out how to fix this.  I have tried some previous message troubleshooting such as updating the DNS entry to add 8.8.8.8 and that did not work.  I have tried to toggle facetime on and restart but that did not work.  I can't delete and reinstall facetime as it is connected to the OS and will not allow you to do that.

I have the same problem. Unfortunately, the troubleshooting link you added has the first step listed as "Verify that FaceTime is enabled in FaceTime > Preferences" which we (the original poster and I) can't do as our Preferences are greyed out. We can't click on them to verify anything.
In FaceTime itself it's verified my apple id (also double checked via the site) and then it says the email is "verified" but then it freezes and after a minute or so it says "Could not verify the email address. Please check your network connection and try again."
After checking the network connection, it still doesn't work. It's rather frustrating as it all worked fine until about a week or two ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello, I cannot get my iPhone 4s to connect to any wifi. When I look in my settings it doesnt give me the option to turn it on. It is just grayed out. I am having the same issue with my bluetooth. Does anyone know how to fix this.

Hello, I have just done a download of the new iPhone software and I am still having an issue with not being able to connect to WiFi or BlueTooth. Both of these under my settings are grayed out, so I have no option to even turn them on. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue.

  • My issue started as ACR grayed out in Bridge using PS CC. No option in preference to open in Camera Raw.

My issue started as ACR grayed out in Bridge using PS CC. No option in preferences to open in Camera Raw. After browsing this forum I downloaded the most recent ACR and installed. Now Bridge stalls on the "building crieria" screen. There is a message to purge the cache but that screen stalls as well. I have force quite multiple times and re-started. Any suggestions?

As far as i know, photoshop cs2 and adobe bridge 1 (cs2) could not open jpegs or tiffs into camera raw, only camera raw files.
I believe photoshop cs3 was the first version to allow jpegs to be opened in camera raw.
Are you sure you had photoshop cs2 before?
If on the other hand, you can't open camera raw files that you used to be able to open, then you probably just need to update the camera raw plugin to version 3.7

  • After restarting with ios 7.0.2 - bluetooth spinning beach ball and wifi grayed out

im now not able to use wifi and bluetooth and resetting network settings didn't work. I went ahead and backed up my data and erased all content, tried restoring as a new phone using itunes by recovery mode and to no avail, it still keeps doing this.. any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks..

    Hello djrv2012,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
Verify that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Ensure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If your issue is still unresolved, perform a software restore in iTunes.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • I am trying to set up e-mail on a second user account but mail preferences is grayed out.  I have looked at some posts which indicate it could be corrupt file and say to deletee .plist but I cannot find that at all.  Any suggestions?

I am trying to set up a Mail account for a second user.  I have made the user account but when I try to set up Mail, it fails as if the password or e-mail is incorrect but I know it is correct.  When I try to go to Mail preferences, it is grayed out.  Any suggestions?

    1. If you haven't tried this already, just delete the user account entirely, and then try setting it up again.
    2. To find the permissions file:
         a. hold down the option key
         b. go to the Go menu in the finder
         c. scroll down to Library and open it
         d. in Library, go to Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
         e. drag it to the trash and restart.
    3. if that doesn't work, go to Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access. In the Keychain Access menu, do Keychain First Aid, and repair.
This should keep you busy for a while.

  • TS1559 iOS: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim

I have done everything from "Reset Network Settings" to "Erase All Content and Settings" and finally restoring the iOS Software (7.0.6), but the Wi-Fi settings are still grayed out. Bluetooth is also not getting enabled. Can anyone suggest what can be done?

    Powell360 wrote:
This has happened to me very recently too. Is it a know hardware issue or do we need an update?
Follow this article: iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
If that fails to resolve the issue, follow this article: iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
If that fails, the device has a hardware fault.
