Bluetooth mouse battery type

Does anybody know of any official (Apple) recommendation not to use rechargeable batteries in the wireless mouse?
I have recently been having problems getting my mouse to reconnect with the iMac G5 after the batteries were recharged (required about once a month). I had to restart multiple times before it would connect. Once connected, everything was fine until the mouse was again turned off. I have been using Ni-MH batteries, marked 1.2 volts (although they measure 1.5 when fully charged), the same as in the keyboard - which has been problem-free.
Last time I charged the batteries the mouse wouldn't reconnect at all, and after discussions with Apple Support a new mouse was tried. Same problem! After another lengthy discussion with Apple, I was told that Apple do not recommend rechargeable batteries and I should use standard alkaline ones because of the slightly higher voltage. And I did install alkaline batteries and the mouse now works fine with them (although the first one didn't).
So what is the official position? Is there any Apple article or recommendation on this topic (my original Dec '04 mouse manual says that rechargebale batteries are OK) ? And has anybody else had similar experiences, or are there any particular types of rechargeables that are better than others?
I really don't want to join the legions of users who seem to be taking out mortgages to keep their mice in single-use batteries!!

Barry,
thanks for the welcome, and that pointer to the Apple position. And yes, I am using the Apple BT mouse.
But given that position, do you have any idea why my fairly new, quality, freshly-charged Ni-MH batteries will not reconnect when regular alkalines are OK, and why would the Apple technician state that rechargeables are not recommended (other than that it agrees with my experience) ? It's obviously related to the fact that the rechargeables measure 1.3 volts where the alkalines measure 1.5, but is the mouse operation that marginal? And if the mouse isn't marginal, is it likely that I have some faulty hardware (although two different Apple mice have shown the same problem) ?
Ni-MH batteries are no problem in the keyboard.

  • Missing Bluetooth Mouse Battery Indicator

After installing a new Kensington Bluetooth mouse, everything is working perfectly except for the Bluetooth battery indicator within the System Preferences app under "Keyboard and Mouse" and then under the "Bluetooth" tab.
Is there anything that I can do to restore this? Is this because it is a non-Apple Bluetooth mouse? Does the battery life signal emanate from the Bluetooth device itself?
    Thanks all in advance!

    To all concerned,
I just got off the phone with Apple Support and they told me that this was a known issue that happened with the last update. Apple is currently working on a fix .

  • Bluetooth mouse battery life

I got the Bluetooth mouse few months ago and do not find the battery to be very long lasting. the reseller told me that it could work for 1 year, but the first shot run like 3-4 months even if I do not use it on a daily basis.
I then decided to leave the mouse always connected because thought that maybe the connecting operation (every time you start the mouse) was consumming more, but after one week I realised it was worse.
Does someone know about the most efficient way to operate the mouse in order to maximise battery life?
    Thanks
    Yann

I had the same issue with an iMac G5 1.8GHz (first revision). The Apple Wireless Mouse battery would die rather quickly. Now I'm using the same mouse with an iMac G5 iSight and the battery lasts way longer. As a matter of fact I am still on the first set of rechargeable batteries and still have 3 green bars, and I have been using it for 25 days or so (which I believe is more than I used to get out of a charge). I guess the original iMac G5 drives bluetooth in a way that runs the batteries down rather quickly.
Perhaps this have something to do with the bluetooth 2.0+EDR version in the iMac G5 iSight, which probably makes the mouse work less hard. That's just my guess.
By the way, I also always leave the wireless keyboard and mouse on all the time. Keyboard has always enjoyed a long battery life.
I should also mention that I use NiMH rechargeable batteries. For people familiar with these, they should know that they lose charge every day (slowly but surely) even when they are not being used. So, getting the battery time I'm getting out of a charge is rather remarkable.
I understand Adam your frustration. Please consider using rechargeable batteries in your case so you don't have to go back to a corded mouse.
    My 2 cents

  • Bluetooth Mouse battery Power Status

    Re:
    ThinkPad Bluetooth Laser Mouse
How to check remaining power and set low power notification for Bluetooth keyboard and mouse
With Windows 7x64 running on a T420s, Control Panel > Mouse has a Bluetooth tab that shows battery Power Status.
However, with Windows 8.1x64 on a T450s, there is no Bluetooth tab or any other battery power status that I can find.
    Has this functionality been lost?
    Hope that helps,

Alkaline batteries will give you the longest life in the mice, but, you have to dispose of them properly, and, buy new ones.... (bad).
Apple sells the Apple Battery charger, that has 6 high capacity NiMH batteries for $30.00
They won't last as long as alkaline, but, simply put the pair of extra (charged of course), into the mouse, the old ones to be charged... Supposed to last over 1000 chargers.

  • Apple Bluetooth mouse battery replacement

What is the best procedure to replace the batteries in the Apple blue tooth mouse? When ever I get the "LOW BATT" signal on the mouse, I need to shut down the computer first, replace the batteries, restart the computer (G5). If I try to flip the mouse over to replace the batteries while the computer is still on the mouse will not re-connect to the computer.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Hi again, Max!
I heartily apologize — on two fronts:
    • I neglected to voice a warm welcome to Apple Discussions!
    • Absolutely no apologies are required on your part. My mistake in assuming; I'm happy to explain what I know.
To find out about your Bluetooth Firmware — and lots more! Go to the blue Apple menu and select the first choice, "About This Mac." Exciting, huh? Then click on "More Info." This will open a very useful application called "System Profiler." (Fyi, the application is actually located inside the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on your HD.)
With Profiler open, look at the left-hand part of the pane. Click (if necessary) to turn the gray triangle beside "Hardware" so its point is pointing down instead of to the right. Select Bluetooth from the list thus uncovered, and you'll see a lot of data on the right-hand side. (This procedure also holds for a lot of other data that may be viewed via the System Profiler. Relevant parts of this info may be helpful to know and convey when you ask for help here or from a technician.)
Now, this may be a little confusing... Your iMac G5's Firmware version is shown within the Bluetooth data we've just found. Yours probably reads "3.1xxx" (xxx perhaps being 965, but I'm not sure). Anyway, you may want to download and run Bluetooth Firmware Updater 1.2 as a check that your firmware is up to date. More in a minute on this.
But for some reason, the Bluetooth software version isn't clearly shown here. (I guess because it's the "Hardware" part of the profile — Duh — but still.) Since we're here, move down within System Preferences to Software. There are quite a few Bluetooth-related software components — let's just check one or two: e.g., under "Applications," you'll see "Bluetooth Explorer" and under "Extensions," you'll see "IOBluetoothFamily" among others. I believe the current versions for these apps 1.6 (it is for my eMac).
Fyi, the current Bluetooth software download page is here. You can check for future updates via the main Bluetooth Support page.
Back to Firmware Updating for a moment. Fwiw, I had an interesting experience running the Firmware Updater myself recently — some of the minutae may help explain the process if and when you decide to try this or future updaters. You can read about it here.
I hope this makes sense, and adds more clarity than confusion. Ask away as needed,
    Sincerely,
    Dean

  • Bluetooth mouse battery run out in 1 day

hey can someone please explain to me why does my batteries for the wireless mouse run out in one day? i don't get it so please explain it to me thank you
    Carl

What sort of batteries are you using, Carl? I'd strongly recomment something like 2500mAh NiMh rehargeable Energizers.
Regular old fashioned carbon zinc batteries (often called "heavy duty") will last very little time. Alkalines will be better, but expensive and still fairly short lived. Lithiums are good, but stop performing before they are really depleted (though you can extend their life by then using them in something else) , and cost a lot. NiMH rechargeable is really the way to go with BT mice and keyboards.
    Cheers

  • Bluetooth mouse shows inaccurate battery charge

Ever since updating to OSX 10.6.7 my Bluetooth Mouse Battery Charge Indicator has been showing an inaccurate 100% charge all the time until the battery is completely discharged. I tried zapping the PRAM but that doesn't help. Any ideas?

This is a known issue with 10.6.7. The reading will eventually start to drop near the end of the battery life cycle. Nothing we can do but look to Apple for a fix. In the meantime here is a widget you can use in Dashboard:

  • Bluetooth Mighty Mouse battery consumption

I have a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse and have had it for 3 months (Christmas present). Last week, I noticed one bar had disappeared in the mouse battery life window in System Prefs - "wow" I thought "only lost 20% charge in just under 3 months".
However, yesterday, I got a "Low Battery" warning and noticed that only two bars were remaining. A couple of hours later I got a "Critical battery level" warning and only one bar remaining.
I don't use my mouse all that much - probably at most 6 hours per day (in short-ish intervals, turning it off in between) and I can't remember accidentally leaving it on. I'm using it with the two original AA batteries it shipped with.
Is this normal battery consumption? I find it strange that from "Low battery" to "critical battery" would be a couple of hours and that it would suddenly lose almost 50% of its charge in a week.
Do these mice eat AA batteries? Is it a good idea to get some rechargeables to use instead?
    Cheers for the help

    Hello thomasp:
In answer to your question, the battery life of a wireless mouse is mostly dependent on usage. When not in use, the wireless devices go to a very low power mode. IMHO, it is a waste of time to turn mice/KBs off. I would postulate that your experience is about normal.
I use rechargeable batteries (2500 mAh) in all my wireless devices. They do not last quite as long as the Lithium batteries - they have a lower voltage. However, I use an Energizer recharger that recharges batteries in 15 minutes - very little waiting time. In addition to being less expensive in the long run, rechargeable batteries are environmentally friendly! I bought a bunch of them on eBay. By the by, the rechargeables lose some charge every day - even if they are not in use.

  • Horrible Bluetooth Keyboard Battery Life - Since Magic Mouse?

I'm having a weird issue that is driving me nuts. I've noticed that over the past couple weeks I've had to replace the batteries in my Apple bluetooth keyboard several times because it is draining at a rate of about 18-20% a day, even when I'm not at home using it or using it much at all. I have the first version of the mini keyboard, the one that takes three batteries. I used to get great battery life and only had to replace them maybe once every few months so something is definitely wrong. The only thing that I can think of that has changed is that I went from the bluetooth Mighty Mouse to the Magic Mouse. As a result I had to install the update that came out to support it and then shortly after, 10.6.2.
I have tried all the typical stuff like removing both the keyboard and mouse from Bluetooth setup, doing fresh pairings, etc. Nothing has helped. At this point I've deleted the Magic Mouse and gone back to the Mighty Mouse to see if that makes a difference, but I already hate it and greatly prefer the Magic Mouse. I'm hoping that someone here has seen or had this issue before and can point me in another direction that helps.
    Thanks!

    Cross posting:
Perhaps inquire directly of Apple Care. Gizmodo's review (http://gizmodo.com/5386202/apple-magic-mouse-review ) relays a claim about the Magic Mouse battery life saying, "it's powered by two AA batteries, which get up to four months of use per charge, according to Apple."
Engadget's preview (link follows) included the same reference, the related headline read, "Apple's Magic Mouse: one button, multitouch gestures, Bluetooth, four-month battery life."
    http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/apples-magic-mouse-multitouch-gestures-blueto oth-four-month/
Finding support for Gizmodo's reference ("according to Apple") and Engadget's headline may be a little more difficult. Perhaps I haven't read the press release carefully enough. Clip below, from that Apple press release:
"Apple Introduces Magic Mouse," press release, 20 Oct 2009, Apple.com (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/10/20magicmouse.html : accessed 24 Nov 2009), in part, "Magic Mouse uses Bluetooth wireless capabilities to create a clean, cable-free desk top and its secure wireless connection works from up to 10 meters away. To extend battery performance, Magic Mouse includes an advanced power management system that works with Mac OS® X to automatically switch to low power modes during periods of inactivity. The wireless Magic Mouse is powered by two AA batteries which are included."
    Hope this helps.

  • Bluetooth magic mouse battery

My magic mouse battery hasn't lasted long, are you supposed to switch off the mouse underneath when not in use?

    Hi s:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I never shut my BT devices off unless I am going to be away for an extended time. Apple BT devices go into a very low power mode after a brief period of non-use.
As a thought, you might want to consider using rechargeable batteries. I have a drawer full of Duracell 2650 mAh batteries and a 15 minute Duracell charger. I got both new on E-bay at a very reasonable price. Rechargeables do not last as long as Lithium batteries (lower voltage, I think) but they are environmentally friendly and you are only 15 minutes from fresh power.

  • U410 Bluetooth mouse problem

    Hi
    I have a brand new U410 running Windows 6.
I also have a brand new Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 mouse.
I am not able to connect the two.
I have tried "Add device" in Settings. I only get a "device not found".
I have tried updating the bluetooth driver (Device Manager) but windows says that the driver is the latest.
The Microsoft Mouse/Keyboard software is installed.
Any ideas what to try next.

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing,
Press and hold the Connect button on the bottom of the mouse. If your device has a battery indication light, it will blink and alternate between red and green to indicate that the device is discoverable.
On the computer, open the Bluetooth software. The Bluetooth software is typically located in Control Panel. For more information about opening the Bluetooth software, see the "How to open the Bluetooth software" section.
Click the Devices tab, and then click Add.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
A Microsoft Bluetooth mouse does not require a passkey to connect to the computer. If you are prompted for a passkey, select No passkey. If you do not get the No Passkey option, try to enter 0000 as a passkey by using your keyboard.

  • My apple bluetooth mouse is not being recognized by my macbook air - and it was yesterday!

My apple bluetooth mouse was working perfectly with my macbook air until I had to change the batteries.  Now it is not discoverable and I really can't operate without a mouse.  I tried another logitech usb mouse and that was not discoverable either.  Please help!

Today, when I turned on my iMac, neither my bluetooth mouse or keyboard were recognized. I had to connect my old USB keyboard-mouse to type this message.
And yes, I restarted my iMac, didn't help.
    Can someone help?
PS: Barry, "resetting SMC" doesn't help

  • Issue with Logitech Bluetooth mouse

    Hi everyone!
I have some problems in correctly configuring my Logitech v270 bluetooth mouse. I followed all the steps in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bluetooth_Mouse, but I still can't connect automatically at startup. Each time I boot my laptop, I must type
    /etc/rc.d/bluetooth stop
    /etc/rc.d/bluetooth start
at the root prompt to get it work.
Please note that I also completed this step: I added to my /etc/rc.local this line:
hidd --connect <enter here your bluetooth mouse address (No capitals!!!)>
    Some ideas?
    Thank you!

Same issue,  been a problem since I purchased last Christmas.  Sometimes I want to throw this piece of crap out and buy a mac.  Lenovo, get your head out of your ass.
