Bluetooth turns ON booting Ubuntu on Satellite L630

I'm using Toshiba Satellite L630-107 (PSK04E).
I installed ubuntu on it but whenever i boot ubuntu my blutooth gets turned on automatically.
When i turn off blutooth from the settings, its not getting turn off.. only way i can turn off blutooth is by booting into windows and using FN key...
Due to this problem i'm getting only one and a half hour battery backup when using Ubuntu and in windows i'll get around 3 hours..
Can anyone help me to solve this problem... pls.

Hi there
I do not have a perfect answer for You but maybe some information and some hints.
First - I doubt that the battery run time is so hard affected by the Bluetooth setting.
For sure, it consumes power, but not that much that it will reduce your run time by 50%. No way.
Instead, there can be other drivers which are not putting their devices to sleep properly or similar issues.
If you are using an old Ubuntu, You should try a later version because many changes are made to the Kernel and subsystems in regards of power-management.
Especially "older" Kernels could drain battery power quite fast. Do not remember which version was affected, but I believe it was 3.0 -> 3.2 or so.
We are now at 3.6 - 3.7 depending on the level of anxiety that You can stand :)
If a later Ubuntu does not help, You may want to try another distro. Different distros tweak the kernels differently and will use services differently. So You may want to boot up on a live media of Fedora (which I am using), OpenSuse or some other recent distro which is NOT built upon the same "base" as Ubuntu.
If that does not help out, and to tweak power-consumption, You may want to try POWERTOP.
It is a cool program which lets You tweak setting for devices which consumes much power and just do nothing.
It is a console-based app so it may not be for everyone.
Looking at the Bluetooth switch - if no distro will allow you to choose if the BT should be on or off, you may want to file a bug to your distro's bug-reporting system.
This may then be resolved after having done some communicating with the maintainers. Hopefully :)
But don't give up!

  • Dual-booting Ubuntu 13.04 with Windows 8 on a U410

    Hi!
    I have a U410 on which I would like to dual-boot Ubuntu 13.04.
I've run it up on a live flash drive, everything works OK.
When it comes to the actual install I'm a bit nervous as I've never had a machine like this before, it's only two months old, and I've never had a machine where I didn't have a Windows install disk!
The installer sees the 500 GB HDD, so I assume I can create a partition on that.
Where do I put the boot loader though? It's telling me it wants to put it on the SSD.
Is this where it should go?
Are there any detailed steps listed anywhere?
I'm assuming that because the installer sees all the partitions and disks, I don't need to turn off UEFI or RAID....
    Thanks!

I've been using Ubuntu on this computer since 12.04 was released and since this thread wasn't closed I'll provide some closing documentation for other u410 users. Ubuntu is growing in popularity and this should help with new users.
Please note that I bought a u410 Ultra with Windows 7 (intentionally) and things may have changed since the new Windows release.
    ________Intro________________________
It is best to know how Intel Rapid Start Technology works before messing with your partition table. Windows is installed on the HDD (500/1tb depending on model) with a 2nd partition holding the drivers necessary for one-push recovery. Note that modifying Intel RST, any files on the 30gb SSD or removing the recovery partition with the windows drivers will break one-push recovery. Because of this you should learn how to reinstall windows 7/8 using a USB driver before you continue.
    ________ Prep_________________
Assuming you know how to install Windows, and you backed up the recovery partition onto your USB drive (or got drivers from the laptops support page on Lenovo.com it is now time to install Ubuntu.
Download the Ubuntu ISO from their website, and download univeral usb installer from here:
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.3.6.exe
Usage of the USB installer is pretty straightforward, I can follow through with a how to if a reader needs it.
    __________ Prerequisites____________
Now that you have a bootable USB drive, reboot into the computers BIOS and disable 'Intel Smart Response Technology'. This takes frequently used Windows files from the HDD and puts them on the SSD for quicker access. Removing the SSD or modifying it's contents only has the side effect of Windows booting and running a little slower.
       Installation
    Now you have three options:
-If you primarily use Windows, you can reinstall it onto the 30GB SSD
-Install Ubuntu on the SSD, and leave windows untouched
-Your last option is to put both Ubuntu and Windows on the HDD and not use your SSD at all.
I chose the 2nd option, I put ubuntu on the SSD. In addition to putting Ubuntu on the SSD for SSD speeds, I split my HDD in half. 500gb for Ubuntu and 500gb for Windows.
When I got to "Where to install Ubuntu" I chose custom. Here you will see two devices /dev/sdax (x being a number assigned to the drive, usually 1) and /dev/hdax. SD for SDD and HD for HDD.
The SSD should have two paritions, one is a fat32 partition with the name 'efi'. Dont touch this, it is used to store secure boot keys so the computer will boot Windows. Ubuntu is versatle and can reuse the Windows efi file.
The rest of the SSD is a ~30gb ntfs partition. Since you disabled Intel RST the SSD isn't going to be used at all. So you can install Windows or Ubuntu here for fast boots, it can't however fit both comfortably.
In this guide I will install Ubuntu here, creat an ext4 partition here, and for the mount point choose /
Switch to /dev/hda and shrink the Windows partition to half this size, do this by dividing the total disk space by 2 (the partitioning software counts in increments of 1024 so if you want a different size you can choose so with some simple math).
Most seasoned Linux users recommend making at the very least a 2nd partition for /home. In Linux this is where all your personal data is stored, you can reinstall any Linux distro and if you mount /home all your files will be right where they used to be. Its similiar to having a Data partition or a separate Harddrive for data if you're using Windows. In linux the transition from SSD is HDD seamless, it's all done in the background for you. I have done exactly this.
Now that your Windows partition on the HDD is shrunk down. Creat an ext4 partition in the newly freed space, for the mount point, click the drop down menu and choose /home.
    Finish the installation.
    ________ Jumping through hoops______________
For me, 12.04.1 and 12.04.2 didn't install correctly because it didn't properly use grub-uefi. 12.10 installed and booted fine and when I used 13.04 on release day it didn't install properly (this could've been changed, if you check 'install updates while installing in present day it may go through.
Because of this issue, of not booting 13.04 (raring) I installed 12.10 and ran these commands in terminal:
    $ sudo apt-get update
    $ sudo apt-get install updates
    $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
When you reboot you will see an option for Ubuntu and an entry for Windows.
    ________ Conclusion / TL;Dr _______________-
My disk scheme looks like this:
    SSD:
    262mb efi partition
    30gb ext4 partition mounted point: /
    HDD:
    500gb ext4 mount point /home
    500gb NTFS partition 'Windows'
I recommend updating Ubuntu Raring and rebooting one more time, updates will push you to the newer 3.8 and 3.9 Linux kernels which a much more power efficient and run well on Sandy and Ivy Bridge Intel computers.
I hope this helps, if anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I hope this imformation is worth the nasty bump.

Hi I am looking for the Windows 8.1 (64 bit) driver for the display adapter on my Satellite L630-12C SYSTEM UNIT. The part number of the laptop is PSK04E-01W00FIT. The display adapter is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 made by AMD. I have searched for the driver both the Toshiba and the AMD website but couldn't find anything that worked. Does a driver exists for this adapter for Windows 8.1 (64 bit) or do I have to roll back to Windows 7? I would greatly appreciate your help in this mattter. Thanks Hussain

  • Linux not being install on Satellite L630

    Hey everyone,
    Can you please help me?
I am trying to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 in my Laptop i.e, Toshiba Satellite L630, and I am getting the error, It is asking for the driver disk, I have tried with the DVD and bootable pendrive, and I've also updated the BIOS of my system, but still the same problem.
    Plzzzzzzzz Help..........

    Hi there!
Are You sure about the version?
RHEL 6.0 seems not to be the current release? Maybe it is an outdated release?
    Current RHEL is 6.3.
What exactly is the installation asking? Please be exact since it makes things a lot clearer.
Also please specify which steps in the installation that You have passed.
BTW - is there a special reason for using RHEL 6.0?
    Thanks!

  • Pre-configured dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows

Of possible interest to the Linux folks: A newly opened Laptops with purpose store is now offering several popular ThinkPad models fully pre-configured with dual-boot Ubuntu Linux and Windows.
These systems come with a lot of pre-installed applications, see Dual boot Linux and Windows page for details.
At the moment, we are working on specific solutions for students, educators, scientists, designers...
Would love to have some feedback from the community on the existing offerings as well as suggestions/wishes for the future ones.

That would be fine if some hp machines didn't have broken UEFI that don't respect setting the default OS.

  • I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.  Why?

I am trying to boot Ubuntu 12.4 on my iBook G4, but am having trouble getting my iBook to recognize the boot disk in the CD Drive.
I have pressed "C" during boot to force it to boot from the Optical Drive.  It boots normally.
I have pressed "option" to get the boot menu.  The only option available is my hard disk drive.
I have pressed "option""command""shift""delete" at the same time during boot to force it to skip booting the hard disk.  I get a blinking smily face/question mark for a while, then it shows the boot menu, at which point the only available option is my hard disk drive.
In system preferences in OS X I have looked to change the boot drive, but the only option, again, is the hard disk.
Can I not boot from the Optical Drive?
    Why?

    Hello,
From the link I provided it says:
Nearly all open-source software is available to download from the Ubuntu repositories, but the amount of proprietary software available for PowerPC linux is limited. You will have the same version of Firefox, LibreOffice, etc as other architectures.
Notable absentees are: Chrome/Chromium, Adobe Flash (although open-source alternatives are available, see below), Wine (however Qemu can be used, see below), ndiswrapper, proprietary video drivers and Dropbox (but, you can use Ubuntu One).
I do recall it being very limited when it came do downloading Linux software that supported PPC.
You wouldn't be any better off than using firefox or safari on Mac OS X 10.4.11.
If your looking for a faster and more compatible web browser then I would suggest the following, which I've recently found very useful on Mac OS X 10.4

    Hope this helps.

Your iphone is right, it is not supported. The iphone's bluetooth protocols do not include file transfer, but are intendes only for headsets, stereo headphones, cars, and keyboards.

  • I have a 3GS. Am trying to sync a plantronics explorer 232 Bluetooth headset and can't figure it out. I have Bluetooth turned on but it searches for devices and the headset never shows up. Anyone know exactly how to do this?  My tech skills are lacking

I have a 3GS. Am trying to sync a plantronics explorer 232 Bluetooth headset and can't figure it out. I have Bluetooth turned on but it searches for devices and the headset never shows up. Anyone know exactly how to do this?  My tech skills are lacking

I have the same blueparrott headset headset with the directions. Actually reading them just fixed my iphone pairing issue.
Here they are in case u still need them along with what I needed to do to get mine to work with iphone 4
    Pair Headset with Phone
    Turn off headset off
Hold down headset's MFB (large top button) until red & blue lights flash and you hear 2 rising tones, followed by 4 more tones. Must wait for all before you release the MFB button!! (I had my hubby hold the MFB while I waited for the tones since both come from the headset
Release the MFB and follow your phone's instructions to place it in 'bluetooth' discoverable mode.  With the iphone4, go to "General" and then "Bluetooth" and turn indicator to "ON".
This is where my issue occurred as the phone could not find the bluetooth, although it worked with my LG phone.  So after trying it several times thinking I was nuts and that the issue was with the iphone, I looked further in the blueparrot's directions and found this step that fixed the issue.
    Reset Paired Devices List
On the bluetooth, press and hold down both the volume up & volume down buttons for 5-6 seconds.  A double beep will be heard and the list will be reset.  Pairing info for devices previously paired will be lost.
The bluetooth directions provide this as step 4 but that did not work for my phone (see below)
    4. Once the phone discovers the headset, select "pair" and enter "0000" code and that when pairing is complete the blue light on the headset will stop flashing and phone will prompt you to 'connect'.
This is what I had to do after resetting the device list on my bluetooth
    4. My iphone instanting discovered the headset and displayed it under 'Devices" but showed a message that it was 'not connected'.  Once I selected the device on the iphone by pressing on it then it changed to "connected".
Even when I turn the bluetooth on and off the device remains on the list and alll I do is select it to connect and disconnect after I turn on my blueparrott bluetooth
    I hope this helps others!

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

  • Bluetooth turns off

The bluetooth turns of automatically when i turn it on
    Just after 10 seconds
And when i send afile also after short time it turns off by itself

Try performing a system repair using PC Companion as this will often fix issues - This will factory reset your phone and erase all data so best to backup before you begin
Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds)
Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the on screen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process
If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP

  • Satellite L630: unsupported bios message while installation of ECO Uti

    Hello everybody ,
anyone can help me to solve this problem ?
I have Satellite L630. After installing new OS and all the drivers during the install of the Eco utility it gives me this "unsupported bios"
    What can i do?
Note : I've updated the bios to the last VERSION

    Hello
As far as I know not all Satellite L630 were delivered with Eco utility so maybe you have model that was delivered without it.
Please dont worry about this Eco utility. If you cannot install it is not so important. Instead of Eco utility you can use Power saver plan in power settings and switch between power plans quickly using FN+F2 key combination.
    Bye and good luck.

  • Satellite L630-107 - Speakers produce tiny voice

I bought my new Satellite L630-107 few days ago, it has really nice features. But what stop me are the speakers. They produce very tiny voice even with the volume is maximum and the sound is very sharp and sorry to say is bad. Even when I compare it to my mobile phone the result is amazing. The small phone speaker is better than the laptop speakers.
This is disappointing, i didn't expect such thing from famous company like Toshiba. I want solution for this.

    Hi
Go to Control Panel and then click on Audio Devices and Sound Themes.
Here you would find speakers and other audio options.
In audio output (playback) device click Properties.
Please check the volume level control level for all devices which would appear in Playback.
You can also click right on the speaker icon in the task bar.
Then a small widow would appear where you could choose the first option; open sound mixer.
There you could set all volume controls to max.
However, you should not expect too much; L series is not a multimedia notebook
