no ... aperture is not a pixel editor ... for that you need an application that is specifically designed to manipulate photos on a pixel by pixel basis ...

Edited pictures open in a zoom in portion of the picture

I quick edited pictures in iPhoto. When I open the pictures, they open with a zoom in on only a portion of the picture. All pictures that I edited performed this way. Those not edited openned correctly. I could duplicate the picture and that picture openned correctly. What would cause this to happen?

I save and replace into iPhoto. iPhoto is version 11
So you are importing the edited photo as a new file? If you are using PSE as the external editor, then you should save, not Save As, for the photo to become a version in iphoto. However, there's a problem with that, because you would need to set the PSE editor preferences>saving files>On first save, to Save Over Existing, and in PSE 9/mac there's a bug that just opening that preference window causes PSE to stop appending the file extension to the files. You must add it manually each time.
You need to pick one or the other: either let iphoto handle the round trip or export, edit in pse, reimport.

Loosing portion of the picture

This is my 1st post, hopefully someone will understand why I'm trying to explain (my english is not perfect and I'm not an expert in computer) I've done few iMovie and just finish another one but:
1st: when I open iDVD and want to use my iMovie project,
a) there is a frame in red on the theme and it cut a portion of the theme. So I have to manually move more inside the menu buttons.
b) in iDVD it cut as well a portion of the pictures from the project: I really do not want that as I loose sometimes people face or they don't appear if there are on the edge of the pic.
I tried widescreen and standard but I always loose portion of the pictures. I don't have that problem when I preview it on iMovie.
2nd: when I tried to open the file in iDVD; it shows in light grey, I cannot open the file.

Did you perhaps go back into the original iMovie and make any adjustments whatsoever after you encoded /burned to Dvd-R? I don't recommend making these types of adjustments after the fact since it more often than not confuses iDvd.
If so, you have 2 choices.
1. The best choice is to start over with an entirely new iDvd project.
2. Or you can delete the encoded assets from the advanced menu within iDvd. Now quit iDvd. Then drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash. Plist is located in your Home folder (the one that looks like a house) > Library > Prefererences >
com.apple.iDvd.plist
Now try your iMovie project again => iDvd and it will (hopefully) work as expected.
If not, just come on back.
Btw, one more recommendation if you are also having problems keeping all buttons and objects within the TV Safe area ... drag and drop your QT movie into iDvd's slidehow (you can now do this with slides as well as movies and it looks great 9 times out of 10..... it'll make all the necessary adjustments for you in terms of all items being located within this "Safe Zone".

How do I impose a portion of one picture in to another picture in PSE 12

I am new to the Adobe Photoshop world. I recently purchased PSE 12 and have not been able to find any tutorials on it. I am working on a class assignment but cannot figure out how to impose a portion of one picture in to another picture. Please, has anyone been using PSE 12 long enough or know enough about it to have figured this out that you might be able to give me step-by-step instructions?
I am also trying to create a collage in JPeg and can not figure this out either. I have tried using the templates provided but I don't necessarily want or need all the frames provided, etc. Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!!!

OK let's deal with the first problem.
1) Open both pictures in Editor and switch over to Experts tab;
2) Select the portion from first picture that you want to "impose" on to the other picture. To do this you need to select the appropriate tool from this section:
3) Copy the selected portion by doing CTRL+C or Edit >> Copy
4) Now switch to your other picture and click at the point where you want to put the selected portion
5) Press CTRL + V or Edit >> Paste
This should do something for you but in PSE there are many ways to skin a cat than what I have described here.
Hope this gets you started.

Blurring a portion of an image

Does anyone know how to blur a portion of an image in gradient-like fashion to give the impression of an unfocussed lens? Can you do it with a transparent layer mask?

IMO, it's better to apply a Depth of Field mask on the Lens blur itself rather than on a layer that's already been lens blurred.
With this Depth Map (in the lens blur dialog) the magnitude of the lens bokeh gradually changes, while with a layer mask gradient it simply gets fainter.
Create a new channel, make the gradient mask on that, and call it up from the Depth Map in the lens blur interface.

How do I modify the contrast/brightness/adjust color of only a PORTION of a picture?

I'm working with Adobe Photoshop Elements version #10.
How can I adjust the contrast/brightness/adjust color etc. . .of just a PORTION of a picture, and not the entire picture?
I've tried "defining" an area that I want to change by using a lasso tool, but when I custom draw an area of the picture, I don't see
any option that lets me adjust the contrast/brightness etc....of that section.

Once you select it, anything you do should apply only to the selected area, or you can create a new layer from the selection, too. So if you make a selection and apply levels, it should only change the selected area. The new layer gives you the option of going back later to change or delete your corrections.
For what you want to do you can also use the smart brush, which lets you select and apply corrections in one go. Just sort through the smart tool's options in the options bar's thumbnail's popout menu till you find what you want.

Is there a way to have a portion of a picture frame in a photobook be transparent?

I want to be able to have partial picture overlaps in a photo book. Something on the order of a "sticker" in other the applications.
Specifically, I am clipping a portion of an image in PSE, such that it has some transparent areas that would allow other image(s) to be seen through it. I've found how to do this in PSE books, but Aperture seems to insist on opaque rectangular photo frames.

Sorry, no, that cannot be done in Aperture photo books. Aperture does not have any tools to deal with transparency and to mask images with arbitrary shapes. If you want to include pages like that, create them in other applications (Pages, Keynote, iBook Author, PSE, ...) and reimport them and use them in full page spreads.

How can I get QT Pro 7 to blur a portion of my video

Trying to make a video of a rack install on a Jeep. I need to blur the license plate. I tried adding text but it seems to be anchored to the top left of the screen. How can I move the text where I want?

After you've added the new track (text or image) you can adjust its dimensions and "offset".
Default offset value is 0,0 (upper left corner). You can change these values in the Movie Properties window.
Open the file and then open the Movie properties window. Single click on the video track and you'll notice the tabs in the lower half of the window will change names. Click the "Visual Settings" tab and enter new values for the dimensions (if needed) and the offset to position the new track where you want it.

How do I mask over a portion of a picture and insert a video,

I am on Final Cut Pro X, a newbie at it though, maybe running before I walk...
but I have this picture of a ball, a glass ball with a sunset behind, inside the ball I want dolphin swimming,(I cannot seem to insert video here even though there is a symbol for doing that?) something I shot recently, kind of this mermaid theme, I have the mask plugins but mask option seems to be giving me either a white or black background... I have the still image and the clip, seems no mater how I configure them, I get this unsatisfactory result... as and can put "effects" on the still image and it becomes transparent but not exactly what I want, a clear still image, with the shape of the "balll" feathered so that it looks like the dolphin are swimming inside of it...

Generalizing for now...
Two essentials to accomplish the task of selective export of Timeline content...including the export settings having the option of
"Share Work Area Bar Only".
1. In the Edit area, set the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar to span just the segment for export.
2. In the Export area, make sure there is a check mark next to Share Work Area Bar Only in the export settings.
The screenshot is from a version earlier than 11, but the principles are the same. In 11, 12, 13, the Share is called Publish+Share.
To set the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar, you can use
a. mouse cursor to move them in place
or
b. shortcuts...
Move Timeline Indicator to beginning of the segment to be, as you hold down the Alt key of the computer keyboard, hit the left bracket key [

When I use the outine tool to cut out a portion of a picture it locks up, is this a program problem

Working in photo shop 10, when I use the outline tool as I am outlining the picture to cut and paste
the screen drops down about one inch and locks up. Is this a Photo shop problem or a HP computer problem?

Sorry, but I don't know what the outline tool is. Are you using the lasso tool? There is a bug in the lasso tool in PSE 10 windows, explained here:

Restoring from a backup and only a portion of iphoto pictures showing

I had my Mac re-formatted at the Apple Store yesterday. I went to restore from the Time Machine backup which was on an external hard drive and only photos from 2008 and before are there. I made the mistake of not verifying my Time Machine backup to ensure all my data was on there but it seems that there must be another place where the photos are stored after 2008 since they are not in my iPhoto library. I also checked our Carbonite backup which was current and it is also not showing any photos past 2008.

exactly how did you "restore" the iPhoto library? the instructions are here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If neither TM nor Carbonite have your photos then only you know where they might be - from an iPhoto standpoint everything is in the iPhoto library - and note that few if any users have found that Carbonite can successfully backup and restore the iPhoto library do if you restore from there do not overwrite your library - you probably will need it.

Picture used in Chapter portion of Theme getting cropped

I am using one of the themes in iMovie. When I go to put a picture in the Chapter portion of the theme, the top portion of the picture is getting cropped off. This picture was taken vertically. A picture taken horizontally fits fine. If I try and constrain the size using iPhoto, the picture just gets larger and the heads of the people are still missing. How can I photos taken vertically to fit in the chapter theme without being cropped?

iMovie lets us drag the image in the Drop Zone to move it left/right or up/down, depending on the Theme. (Place the mouse over the image in the Drop Zone and press the Option key. Drag the image.)

Lighten a portion of picture

I am trying to lighten a portion of a picture. I have copied the layer, applied the blend mode screen to lighten the whole picture, then added a layer mask so I can pain on parts I do not want to lighten. I used the brush tool with black selcted and painted on image. Nothing happens. Any idea of what I am doing wrong. I am using elements 10.

Well, you can always reset the tool: When the Brush tool is selected, click on the tiny arrow at the far right left of the Options Bar, and choose "Reset Tool".
If that doesn't solve it, post a screenshot of your Layers Palette.

JPG blurring in FCP

I know there have been a lot of posts on this topic, but i still havent found the answer i'm looking for. Whever i import PSD,PDF or JPG files into FCP I have the same problem. When I open a picture in the viewer it looks exactly as it should, it keeps that same quality when i drag it to the timeline and it has the green line for the preview render. When playing on the timeline with the green preview line the image becomes blurry. When i render the preview some of the blur goes away, but the picture still isn't as clear as the original. This is most obvious when importing a photo shop picture PSD, JPG or PDF that has text. I tried de-interlacing and that didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions?

If you are working in a DV timeline you are compressing your still 5:1. In other words, it will not look good. Still and titles in a DV timeline don't do well.

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.
