"Blur" effect results in hard edges

When I apply a "blur" effect to an object, it appears to be masked with a hard edge (in a square, regardless of the shape of the original object), slightly beyond the edges of the object itself. SEE SCREENSHOT HERE:

Can anybody tell me what's going on here?

A Blur Effect is a raster effect. All raster effects result in the creation of a raster image, even if they are recreated on-the-fly as you edit the objects to which they are applied. All raster images are rectangular.
As JC explained, the settings in your blur are causing the colored pixels in the raster image that is being generated to extend out to the edges of the rectangular image.
Be aware that the rectangular raster image of the "shadow" , and anything it interacts with transparently (colored objects behind it) will be flattened and rasterized into rectangular raster images when printed. Check your flattened artwork and print proofs for visible edges that can sometimes occur where the rectangular rasterized edges abut the portions of vector objects that do not get rasterized in this way.

Blurring "censor" effect fails at all edges of video

I have been using the Track Matte Key effect in combination with the titler to create a "blur" effect to blur out faces and expletive words on videos I've been producing. It creates the same type of effect you see on episodes of Cops where peoples' faces are blurred, and allows for you to control the movement of the blur to stay on the person's face/word/other censored object as it moves in a video.
There's only one problem I seem to be encountering with this effect. If the object requiring censorship extends to either of the 4 sides of the video (i.e. in a camera pan of the object), the blur effect fades away just near the edges, allowing the censored object to be briefly seen as it passed by the very edges of the video.

Hi,
I had that problem too....where the blur fails at the edges of the frame....was very annoying...
It seems to happen when the mask is created in the title window...but not if you create the mask in photoshop....
try this maybe ...
get your first mask made in the title window for your first frame of video that's going to use the mask...
That will give you the size and location of the mask for your first frame...
Put that mask on your timeline....and put CTI over it and " export - frame "....to location that you like ( desktop, whatever )
Open it in photoshop....
Now...because this mask is gonna move ( position ) you might want to use the "canvas" size adjustment to make your mask larger....so you don't run out of black.....the mask is going to be pure white to be transparent and the rest will be pure black for opaque...you make it what you want with gaussian blur etc...you know...adjust the thing so it works the way you want...
Save the file as PSD when you've finished and import the PSD file to NLE and clear the mask made in the title window...and use the psd file instead....
This should solve the problem...
I don't know why the title thing does that but suspect it has something to do with the " safety " ( tv safe , for titles ...you know ? )....

I do fine until I "Add the Layer Mask". When I go to Lens Blur afterward, the image is the same and it blurs the entire image. I followed this video exactly as it said. Anyone else having this problem?

Creating a Defocus pull matte for Compound Blur Effect

I was trying to make a defocus pull matte by starting with a black solid (comp size) and using the 4 Color Gradient effect on it, with the color points set to white and black so that I could place where I wanted the blurring to occure. I used the Compound Blur Effect on the Layer that I wanted to blur and chose my "defocus matte" as the Blur layer.
NOTHING HAPPENED.
I tried precomping the "defocus matte" layer and again NOTHING HAPPENED. Nothing Blurred.
What am I doing wrong.
Also is there a better way to create a defocus matte. The four points of the color gradient didn't quite follow the outline that I wanted. Do I need to create the Defocus matte in Photoshop or Illustrator.

Using CS4 on a Mac

The 4 Color is not the best tool. All compound effects rely only on luma values ad ignore chroma information. And remember the blur layer is sampled before all effects are applied, unless, as Andrew notes, you carefully precompose.
The best compound effects are the result of careful experimentation. Compound and grayscale effects are one of the more powerful control systems in After Effects. They can drive animation systems in Shatter. Very cool.

Blur effect in motion

Hi all,
I am trying to figure out a way to do this, it might be very easy or....impossible.
To simplify it, I would like to move a rectangle over an image (or whatever) and apply an effect to the part of the image that is seen through the rectangle. Imagine, moving a clear but tinted piece of glass in front of an object.
Let's start with a tint but what I really want is a blur effect. What do you think ?

Its quite straight forward. one way to do it is like this.
Start with your video layer, and then duplicate it. To the top one apply a tint, or blur or both. Now draw a mask to the top layer. it will only show the section in the mask. If you animate the mask around it will look like a rectangle is moving over the image and bluring tinting it as it goes.
You could also do this with some shape above the blurred level and set it to stencil so that its shape only shows the video below. You could then animate this shape.
Of course if you want to get really clever you can blur the edges of the shape or mask to blend it in more. or you could combine two masks or shapes. make one a frame and increase the level of blur in it. with the normal blurred mask in the middle and both moving around it will look like the blurred shape moving around has a bevel that distorts more.
if it were a peice of glass it might magnify the image seen through it slighly as well. You would need to increase the scale of the top layer to acheive that.
Does this point you in the right direction?

PSE 9 Rotate with "Hard Edges"

Hi there,
I am working with pixel art in Photoshop and am trying to rotate parts of my image to help speed up the process. However, whenever I rotate my selection and click the confirm button, it blurs out my selection as if that's the best method of rotating it. This would be fine if I was working with photographic content, but for pixel art it compeltely messes up my image. So I am wondering if there is a way to roate using something like the "Preserve Hard Edges" option on the Resize Image window.

Premiere Pro CC crashes after 25% rendering, has particular issues with directional blur effect

I've only been using Premiere for a single project as my university specified we should use it, I'm not used to such a complex programme, or even video editing to be honest, so bear with me. (I'm following that guide on what information to add to questions on this forum)

Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above. Select the new disk on the list at the left. Click the erase tab. Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice. Then click the erase button.
That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase. You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition. Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click Apply button to create the partitions.
Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them. So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose. You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.

How do I turn on the GUI controls for the Focus Blur Effect in Final Cut Pro X

I can't find the setting that enables the GUI control overlay to manipulate the parameters of the Focus blur effect in Final Cut Pro X. When I have the clip and the focus effect selected I only get a center element overlay. At one point I had controls for all the other elements of this effect.
anyone know a shortcut or how I can toggle these controls back on?

I don't see any other screen controls either.
Maybe there was a change sometime, or maybe you were using a different effect?

Trying a simple CC Redial Blur Effect over an image !!

Your issue is quite simple. Tutorial author is using a PSD file with no background under the text (file with transparency) - you are using a jpg - file with gray background that is covering your rays. You have to remove background in photoshop and export it to AE without it or remove it in AE using some Keying plugins or simply masks.

Script to Edit Gaussian Blur Effect

I have a complex piece of artwork which has to be scaled up by a factor of 10. No problem except the Gaussian Blur Effect will not scale.
Rather than go through each path and edit the blur amount (by a factor of 10) I had hoped I could write a script which would iterate through every path and if it had a Gaussian Blur Effect edit the value.
Looking in the AppleScript dictionary and online I can't see any way of accessing a path's Appearance or Effects.
I would be very grateful for some advice on this before I start the tedious process of manually changing the values.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I thought as much. It's disappointing really.
The select filters will not unfortunately be helpful because the blurs are different so I can't select all blurred items because I don't want to set them all the same and equally I can't pick one and select all with the same blur amount because I don't know if I have changed all of the items.
I've just got my head down and am selecting them all individually and editing them!

That's unfortunate it was removed in Java 5. We use Web Start for headless applications (no GUI windows) and so at times would have multiple instances running on the same machine each using a different JNLP. Previously, we could see which instance was which by the console displaying the description tag information on the console's title bar. This was a great feature of JWS that now appears to be less functional. Sun, is there a way to get this back if you are listening?
The s: command doesn't display the JNLP description tags which we helped to identify the application. We want to use Windows task manager to see a list of all applications and from this list end any JWS process easily from the window. Without the title on the console window, there is no way to uniquely identify a particular application.
Regardless, our frustration in using JWS has increased with this new introduced limitation.

Before flash 8 we would use two images, blur and regular.
Blur can be very low quality so it's small in KBs and you
can't
see the quality while tweening. Tho in that particular site
you can actually see how low quality it is as the tween
happens
too slow. So, we would place blur image made in photoshop for
zoom
animation, and jump to frame with clean sharp one once the
tween
is done.
Flash has has BLUR filter. You can convert your image into
movie clip
and apply the filter to it.
