Blur in PS CC

How do I selectively blur one edge of a selection in PS CC? I have merged two photos together using layers (there was a big gap between two subjects) but the bottom edge of the upper layer is a bit obvious. I blurred the whole image and the bottom looked perfect but the rest was - well - blurred!

As always with Photoshop there are umpteen ways to achieve the same effect - this is how I would do it, I am sure others will have other ideas.
I am assuming that you have each element of the 2 combined images on separate layers.
Make sure the blurred image is above the non blurred image in the layer stack.
Create a layer mask for the layer that has the blurred image and then - using a black (probably soft edged) paint brush - paint over the part of the image that you want to make transparent.
You could also use smart objects - Before blurring the layer right click on the layer and convert it to a "Smart Object". Now when you apply the blur the smart object will automatically create a mask. You can then (making sure the you have clicked on the Mask and not the layer) use a soft black brush on the mask to paint away the blur effect.
Also do a search for tutorials in blending 2 or more images in Photoshop (the basic principle is that same across most if not all versions of Photoshop.

My lock screen just shows a black background and a User Name/Password dialog after opening the screen from sleep. How do I get it back to where it blurs my desktop image with the dialog and my account image displayed?

I'm not sure when it began, but now my Macbook Air only shows a black background and a User Name and Password dialog box when I wake it from sleep. It used to show my desktop background blurred with my user name and icon displayed with only a text field for entering my password. I'm currently using Yosemite (OS X 10.10.1) and all updates have been done. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I know this isn't a real problem, just an annoyance since I couldn't find how to change it back in the System Preferences.

I just have to point out that after looking at a related post (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22661092#22661092), it brought to memory that my issue most certainly began happening after I added some DoD certificates to the keychain. This obviously has something to do with it, but it still leaves me wondering what actually causes this to happen. :/

Adobe Flash CS5 - Blur effect & tween not working

When I try to create a tween for the blur, so it will blur into focus, the tween just wont work. I go to frame 130, keyframe, add blur filter, create clasic tween. But when i go to frame 131 it instantly pops into focus instead of going along the tween time span to blur in gradually(I have the next keyframe at 160). Anyone have any ideas?! This boggles my mind!
Any help or suggestions would be deeply appreciated

What type of textfield are you using? What type of symbol have you created it as? If you can show a screenshot of the stage and timeline for what you have it might help to identify the problem.

Photos in camera roll have become blurred, can't take new ones

My old photos in my iPhone4 camera roll have become blurred and I can't take new photos, as they aren't saved properly (either they look blurred or i see a blank or black rectangle in the camera roll). Any ideas? I do not want to reinstall the iOS please...

Yes I've tried it, several times. I've shut down all the apps, then put in "airplane" mode, then reset, then reset again..

IMovie 6 HD - TV Screen Images are blurred

How do I created iMovie DVD that plays clear images and text?
I do not want to keep wasting DVDs experimenting for clear result.
I created iMovie per instructions from another post:
imported screenshots of website using KenBurns effect;
set the effect to 1.0 to stop zooming, and did not allow iMovie to render movie when exporting.
Discussion indicated that blurred image in iMovie would be clear on TV screen.
Imported snapshots were crystal clear in Preview and Photoshop.
Imported iMovie to iDVD and burned DVD.
DVD plays blurred images and text.

Are you saying I should size any still images at 768x576 pix before importing them into iMovie since that is TV resolution?
If you are using PAL, yes. For NTSC, the resolution is 640x480 pixels.
Does it matter what dpi the images are?
No, the dpi is of NO concern in video.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA blurred

I'm using an early 2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch with a ViewSonic VG2230wm monitor using a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port.
The resolution of the external monitor is set to 1680 x 1050 which is the recommended but the quality of the image is poor. All text on webpages and documents has a slight shadow on it and is visibly poorer than the built in display on the MacBook.
My question is will I get a better result if I use a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter instead of VGA? The monitor supports both.
Is there a better way of getting a crisp clean image on my external monitor?

Edit: I've just tried the same monitor and adapter on my Mac Mini with the same results. The picture still looks slightly blurred and with a shadow.
The Mac Mini also has a Mini DVI port and when I use a Mini DVI to DVI adapter on the same monitor the picture is nice and crisp.
Will switching to a Mini DisplayPort to DVI fix my blurred vision?!?

Creating a symbol from shape with gaussian blur = problem

I am trying to create artwork to map to a globe using the 3D revolve effect...the problem is the shape/layer I'm using to create the "glow" effect (compound path filled with white and a gaussian blur applied):
When I create a symbol out of this, here is the problem (note the "excess" areas on the top and right):
...resulting in this messed up globe...
Doing an outer glow effect instead of gaussian blur results in the same thing (its definitely the blur causing this, deleting the shape fixes the problem). Expanding the shape with the blur results in an image the same size as the bounding box in image 2 above. Any ideas how to address this?

Resizing pixel art video without affecting the pixels with blur.

First I would like to mention that I did searched for an answer to my issue on the forum but only found a thread by Rowby Goren from Jan 4, 2010, who asked a similar pixel resize question regarding to still images in CS4. He was answered to use Photoshop for this kind of task. My issue on the other hand is for handling a video that can only be edited in Premiere. I'm using CS6. My issue is as follows:
I work a lot with pixel art animation in 320x240 resolution. Usually I'm making a 320x240 scene of background and characters and the final result should be a doubled sized. So each pixel is actually 2 times larger. Just like old adventure games from the good old days that most of us remember. It works great with old style games creation engines however when I want to make a video with my pixel art creation in Premiere, I couldn't achieve an exact and clean doubled pixel when resizing the source by 200%. It always gets blurry. Does anyone knows if Premiere has any switch off option for scalling blur?
I have created an image that describes the issue. It's just a simple pixel art image that I picked up on google search. I saved and uploaded it as PNG for best quality, I just hope it won't get compressed after the upload. Any assitance will be appreciated!

Thanks Jim, I am aware of the fact that it's a degraded image that doesn't have any antializing effect on it. And that's what I'm trying to achieve in Premiere, although it's currently impossible. Until now I'm doing exactly what you suggested, which is to double the size in Photoshop or other tool that doesn't affect any antializing on the image and then I import it into Premiere. However this also makes a problem when you want to move objects on the screen as the imported images which are doubled size, won't show well on the 1:1 pixel grid when you move them around the screen. So let's say each move on the X axis to the left or right (which represents a move by 1 pixel) should be moved twice in order to meet the doubled sized images pixel grid.
Take a look on the picture I created to see what I mean. I've duplicated the box image and I'm trying to position each box one next to another in a 3d space look. The left boxes is the original image of the 2 boxes, and the right image is the doubled sized image that was created outside of Premiere. Please note that I've the entire screenshot twice larger so you could see the difference. And please ignore the fact that there is no antializing on the right image as I made this simulation in Photoshop so the pixels will be clean to show the problem.
So, if you aware of how a pixel grid looks like, check the left image. The position of the boxes on each other is the way it should be as each pixel from each box keeps the relation of a 1:1 pixel grid. However on the right image I first doubled the original box image to prevent 'blurring' effect when scalling up in Premiere, put it on a 1:1 pixel canvas (where the image has 2:2 pixel grid by now) just like how it will be in Premiere, and tried to position the boxes one next to another. See that there's a confusion between the pixels on the 1:1 grid as they got merged one INTO another without saving the relation of a doubled pixel grid. Where if there was any option to work in doubled sized pixles in Premiere, it would have look like this:
So importing a doubled size images into Premiere like you suggested is way hard to keep tracking the moving objects in the scene, as you must remember to move them twice the times to each direction. Which means that if you want to move an object from one side of the screen to the other side, you'll have to do it frame by frame in a move of 2 pixels by frame, rather then positioning it in one place, make a keyframe, and then go to where the movement should end and place another keyframe.
Hope now my issue is clear.

I have been saving photos that have been emailed to me. They show up in the camera roll and then I put them in separate albums. My camera roll when I try to open it freezes and the thumbprints are a jumbled and blurred. This is on my ipad.

I can't get out of there unless I shut my ipad down and restart it. I can use other parts of my ipad ,but my camera roll remains frozen....help!

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
No data will be lost.

Blur with gradient tool / Lens blur

Hi everybody,
I want to make some blur effects like miniature effect or open apperature lens blur.
Currently I'm using the gradient tool with negative sharpness. But I think in 100% zoom, the effect looks a litte bit like on/off. Or is the visible effect just non-linear??
Furthermore it would be create to simulate a lense blur effect in the corners. Currently I have to add at minimum 4 gradients, one in each corner. That's no effective
Otherwise it would be possible to implementate a radial gradient mask additionally to the normal linear gradient. Also a reflected gradient mask, would be useful.

-51 to -100 sharpness is lens blur. It's power is limited by the amount of time it takes to calculate this sort of effect - bigger = longer.

Is there a way to remove the blurred background wallpaper effect when using the phone in iPhone 4S' iOS 7?

A few nights ago, my picky client finally upgraded his iPhone 4S' iOS 6 to iOS 7. He doesn't like the blurred background wallpaper image when using the phone feature (e.g., calling and talking). Is there a way to disable this new visual effect like in iOS 6? I am pretty sure this is by design by Apple.

I've been having the problem of safari not showing pdf's, this is partially solved now. But since I've followed the steps on another thread here,
I can see the pictures in a pdf, but not the text. The text seems to be blurred out as shown in the picture below :
Another awkward issue is that when I open the same pdf in Google Chrome, de pdf shows normally, but when I try to open the pdf from chrome in preview, the same blurred text appears.
Any solutions?

Did the person that made the PDF use Word for Windows to make the PDF?* It's now possible to make PDFs directly from Word with File > Save As but one of the default options, "Bitmap text when fonts may not be embedded", makes the text (by now a graphic) unreadable in Preview or the built-in Safari view. I don't know if this is Microsoft's fault for making the bitmaps in a strange way, or Apple's fault for having a bug in Preview.
* You could always find out by opening the PDF in Preview and doing Tools > Show Inspector

HT1583 When burning a DVD of photos and music from iDVD, the photos blur right before the transitions and the music has about 5 second glitches here and there before the music starts again. Is there any way to burn the DVD without this happening?

Each year I am in charge of making a slideshow of photos and music for my annual company meeting. I always use iDVD to set up my photos and music and then burn the DVD to play at the meeting. Every time I burn the DVD, it blurs right before the transition of the photo. It has always done this and I'm not sure why. It will also make the music glitch in a few spots for about 5 seconds or more. If I burn another DVD to try it again, the glitches will still be there, but in different spots. I've tried the highest quality of DVD's possible and this still happens. What can I do to fix this problem?

Try disabling transitions altogether!
There is a technical reason that this breakup happens - it is to do with how slideshows can be saved within the DVD specification, they can either be recorded as 'video streams' or as a collection of 'still images'.
When you add transitions iDVD has no option but to use a video stream, this can result in terrible 'breakup' because the mpeg 2 encoder isn't designed to handle scenes that are static with a sudden short change. You can see 'artefacts' in the video stream…

'Still image slideshows' avoid the issue altogether by only showing a static image, no video compression is used & because the scene doesn't transition so it shouldn't breakup.
NOTE: Music on the slideshow is irrelevant, both types can use a soundtrack.
I cannot remember if it is possible to force iDVD to only make still image slideshows, I always use DVD Studio Pro to correctly setup DVD's. I'd suggest you use the option to save the DVD to a disk image & then open that disk image so that DVD Player can preview it, that should save on the number of test disks you burn.
If you cannot make it avoid using video streams you may be ether off making your own video slideshow in iMovie & then import that into iDVD. It may eventually look better despite being a video stream!
iDVD isn't really condusive to professional levels of control.

How do I change the blurred background image on the Select User Screen

I have changed the desktop image on all of my users, as well as the screen savers. However, when I logout of one user and the screen where you select another user comes up, there is an image on the background of this particular screen that I cannot figure out how to change.
This is crucial because I do not want to see my crazy, abusive ex-wife every time I select a different user...even if it is a blurred image.
This blurred out image does not appear anywhere else on any of the different user accounts as a background/desktop image.
How do I change this background image?
Please help.

This seems to work.
"The only way I was able to fix this problem was to go Mission Control and close all extra desktops I was using except Desktop 1 (which you cannot delete if it is the last one). After deleting the extra desktops besides Desktop 1, I went into preferences and set my wallpaper. Once I complete both of these steps I returned to the login screen. The wallpaper I used for Desktop 1 was now my background for the login screen. Hope this helps."

Before ordering your calendar preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered calendar will match it.
What is the printed size of the image and what are it's pixel dimensions - it need to be no less than 150 DPI for a good, clear print
You can contact Apple at the address included in your order confirmation email and see what they will do - but if the picture is too small reprinting will not help
