Bluray burners in Macpro

I see that Best Buy now stocks Bluray burning drives. Is anyone using one in a MacPro yet?

Also the specifics of using one in a Mac Pro is mostly irrelevant, depending mostly on the connection. The first concern should be 1.) is it supported for the Mac (in general) and 2.) what software supports it.
Right now there's really only speculation. One fact is DVDSP does not support Blu-ray burning at this time but if you can still see if the blu-ray drive in question is supported for the Mac if you wanted to attempt to burn Blu-ray disks outside of DVDSP. Check the specifications of the drive to see if it's supported for the mac, but you already know DVDSP doesn't support it right now though.

  • BluRay burners.

I have been 'playing around', I like to call it educating myself, for the past 12mnths. with an expensive HD Vid Cam, an expensive computer and now I am itching to record a BluRay disc of my rendered video. I have purchased an expensive 'burner', in fact 2. I took the first one back because when I enter Share/Disc/BluRay, I get message in Status, 'No burners detected'. The Man at the shop thought I was 'avin a largh, but recomended I buy a dearer model, "because that's a real one" he says. After carefull installation, because by now, I thought I am doing somthing wrong here, I got the same message, but it only cost me $25 more. I have to say, using the same burner installed, when I enter Share/Disc/DVD or Share/Disc/ACHVD, the other 2 options, with the same file, I get an immidiate response from Status saying, Burner Location is D: Atapi--etc. This says to me, All is not lost, the burners are genuine but begs the question: Do I have to author them in PE10 some how.

I am with Steve, and would check the installation and the burner's driver first.
If you have a Windows computer, then start at Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, and look down the list, until you come to CD/DVD/BD drives (exact syntax can differ by OS version). Check the driver there, and also any warning, or error messages.
If everything checks out there, I would then see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3127429#3127429 for some of the most common casuses of "PrE can't detect a burner" errors.
One additional thing to consider is the BD burner's firmware. What is the make and model of the drive? Does the mfgr. have newer firmware available for it? If so, be very certain to read the installation instructions very well. As they can change model to model and mfgr to mfgr, I print out those instructions, to check off each step, in the order listed, when flashing new firmware. That is very important.
    Good luck,

  • Do Blueray burners work with a PPC G5 (dual 1.8GHz)

Do Blueray burners work with a PPC G5 (dual 1.8GHz)?

All BluRay burners are SATA, so you'd need either an External Firewire Burner or a SATA<->IDE converter if replacing the built-in CD/DVD drive.
Then you'd need Software like Toast 9 or 10...

  • BluRay with G4 Mirror?

Hello. I have a G4 Mirror dual 1.25GHz w/ 1 GB ram. My internal DVD/CR burner is dead (won't read or write). I was thinking about replacing it, but I would really prefer to just get an external BluRay reader/writer that does DVDs & CDs too.
Question is: Can I get it to work on my computer with my current operating system??
    My concerns:
My current OS is 10.3.9. I plan to upgrade to tiger but I can't because my comp obviously can't read any installation CDs right now. Are BluRay readers compatible with 10.3.9?
All BluRays I find use eSATA so can I install a PCI card to give my G4 eSATA, also without upgrading my OS?
If I can get a BluRay to work on my comp with my current OS, then any suggestions on which PCI cards or BluRay burners would be awesome.
    Thank you in advance!!

hmm.. it wouldn't let me type anymore.
    But anyway...
So what do you think about that combination? Toast 9 + the Mercury Pro Super Multi Blue Blu-Ray external drive?
I already have an external FW, and it's good for a mirror of my computer and a few offline archives, but in general, I want to find a way to archive photos from sessions that I have edited & completed but don't need online anymore. Right now, I have to burn all to a DVD which doesn't hold much. (And I've been working only from an old laptop because my MDD OS can't be updated to run Photoshop CS3 or CS4 and the laptop is the only DVD burner working.)
I wish I could upgrade my mac now, but since I can't afford it, I thought that getting an external blu-ray to at least use as a DVD/CD burner would be good so then when I can afford a new comp, I would already have blu-ray. It seems a bit of a waste to replace my dead internal DVD/CD-RW but I need something to be able to upgrade my OS. Right now I'm stuck - unless there's some way to install tiger onto my external FW drive & then install on my MDD?
What do you think the future of blu-ray is? Will I just be getting myself into a pickle if I invest in the external blu-ray only to have it not become mainstream like DVDs have become? (And then have problems retrieving my archives?)

  • Burning BluRay Supported?

In the discussions here, I'm not completely clear to what degree DVD Studio Pro, Compressor, and FCS in general, supports us burning our own BluRay disks. I see comments to the effect that it only partly supports BluRay, but it wasn't completely clear what it does and does not allow me to do.
Does the latest FCS allow me to do so?
If so, are there particular BluRay burners (hardware) that work with it and others that don't? Which BD burner(s) have you folks had good or bad experiences with?
    Thanks for the ideas!

DVDSP does nothing Blu Ray since its a DVD authoring tool. The 2 formats are completely different. Compressor has an option to output a Blu Ray file format - never used it myself. Honestly though, try this tool:
    http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html
Snow leopard is not supported YET but it may work better than whatever Apple pisssed together. I use it on the PC end and like it alot!
Hopefully others will give you some advice on hardware.

  • BluRay Burner compatible with PE7

I am ready to try burning a BluRay Disc. Can you tell me what BluRay burners are compatible with PE 7. I have always burnt my standard videos to My Videos Folder and then had to use Nero 8 as my PE 3, and now PE 7, progs do not recognize my burners. Am I going to have to continue with Nero 8? I like to collect several Video clips in My Videos Folder (Windows XP Pro) and then I can make up DVD's with different combinations for different people. I do need advice on BluRay burners.

    Ros,
The first thing that I would address would be why PE7 does not see your current burners.
You mention Nero, also being loaded onto your system. Nero is a compilation of various "modules," that perform different, though often overlapping, functions. One "module," that is installed in the default installation is InCD. This is a packet-writing module. It allows one to "drag-and-drop" files to a CD/DVD, just like you do with on the hard drives on your system. If you have this installed, and it is very likely that you do, it will interfer with any Adobe program's burning capability. All Adobe programs, that allow burning to CD/DVD require 100% control of any burner used. InCD "hooks" all bunrners at bootup and will not release the burner to any other program at 100% level*. It is best to always do a "Custom" install, and uncheck the InCD module, so that it is NOT installed. Then PE, or Premiere Pro 2, or Encore, can find the burner and use it at the 100% level.
Usually, a complete uninstall of Nero, and then a Custom installation, will allow Adobe programs to use the burners, if they are installed correctly on one's system.
An easy check for InCD is to open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and look in the Processes Tab. Dbl-click on the Name column twice, to set the listing to alphabetical with ascending order. Scroll down to the I's in the list, and see if InCD is listed. If so, this is very likely your problem. If so, open Control Panel, and choose Add/Remove Programs. Your list might take a moment to populate. Uninstall Nero. Insert your Nero disc into the drive/burner and choose Custom for install, unchecking the InCD module. I also do not install Nero's indexing/monitor, as it has been known to "watch" burners and also get in the way.
While still in Control Panel, look at System>Device Manager. Check that your burners are, in fact, seen by Windows and that they are listed as working properly. If not, then you will want to remove them in Control Panel, and reboot. Windows should then find them, and install its drivers for each. Check in Control Panel>System>Device Manager again. Any warnings?
This should get everything set up so that PE sees your burners. I have to say that Nero can be very invasive on a system. When I uninstall any part of it, I always run a Registry cleaner to make sure that all is removed, before I do a Custom re-install.
Now, for rearranging your "scenes" from your tapes, well, that's editing. It is the work and for me the fun of using an NLE (Non Linear Editing) program, like PE. I take the material from the tapes and arrange them in the order that I wish, i.e. all of the "garden" material into one Project. In PE, you cannot have multiple Sequences (read Timelines here), so I'd just do an edit for the gardens as a Project. Same for "travel," etc. Once edited, you would just Export as a DV-AVI "Movie," and bring the ones that you wish to combine into a new "master" Project. That would be what I would output to DVD, or BD. I use Premiere Pro, which allows for multiple Sequences, and treat each Sequence as a Chapter. I use another Adobe program, Encore, to author the final disc, and just Import each "Chapter" into it. PE does the authoring in one program.
Hope that this helps you get your burners back.
    Hunt
    * Other programs can hook the burners, as well as InCD. If you have Quicken and use its Save to CD, it will first invoke Windows' version of InCD, which is also a packet-writing application. Once invoked, the burner will only be seen as a CD drive by the system, even if it's a multi-drive. So InCD (Nero) is not the only way that this problem can come about. Any packet-writing application will hook the burners, and Adobe cannot find them.
There can also be issues with the wiring of the burners, that will cause this too. If they are both set to Master on their controller chain, problems can arise. Usually, it's just packet-writing software, that is the culprit.

  • What's the best choice re video file format in a camera for iDVD production

I currently am using a Sony DSC H1 digital camera which does shoot video in MPEG 1. I use MPEG Streamclip to convert those clips to MPEG 4. The results on my TV screen after processing through iMovie and iDVD are "acceptable" but I will want to upgrade to a good video camera at some point to expand my capabilities. My question is - what video file format should I look for in a camera in order to produce the easiest to work with and best quality result from my iMac?? I am using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and iDVD 5.0.1. Thanks for any suggestions.
    iMac G5 20" 1.8 GHz - 400GB HD - 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   300 GB & 160GB Ext drives, QT 7.1.3 Pro

    miniDV
that's what the iApps are meant for...
a superior pic quality can be accomplished with socalled 3ccd cameras, as from Panasonic...
HD (=HiDef) offers much more detail/quality, but is (yet) not supported natively to any disk-delivery format (Apple supports the BluRay consortium); external BluRay Burners (=$$$$) come bundled with a special HD-edition of Toast7...

  • Is there an External Superdrive dvd burner available for an iBook G4?

I'd like to make DVDs of a presentation, but my iBook doesn't have a SuperDrive.
Should I use the iMovie or iDVD application to create the presentation?
Do peripheral external DVD burners or SuperDrives exist?
Or is there another way of making DVD copies...(Like ordering iBook picture albums from iPhoto?)
    Thanks!!

You can simply google for that; I'm sure there'll be plenty - just make sure it specifically states that it is compatible with Mac and the OS version you are running. I've had a LaCie for a number of years; it is self powered with FW port (they no longer make this one unfortunately); here is their non-Bluray option they have now:
    http://www.lacie.com/products/range.htm?id=10058
(Personally, I prefer self powered instead of bus powered). They also sell Bluray burners.

  • How can I archive 5,000+ photos in iPhoto

i have managed to accumulate over 5,000 photos in iPhoto and i think they are slowing down my mac mini. they slow down opening iPhoto.
is there a way to archive them so i can access them if i want but don't have to have them all show up in iPhoto?
i have an external hard drive and am tempted to move them onto that although i don't know how i would get time machine to stop overriding them.

    Jane,
The size of your library doesn't sound like it would be a problem, but to try to give you a suggestion to the premise of your question...
This probably won't help you on your immediate issue, but you may want to consider occasionally closing a library and starting a new one. This keeps the size manageable and easy to backup to a dvd size disc.
Of course it depends on each user and how and what they are doing, but for example, I shoot my son's rugby team each year. Each year I start a new iphoto library (ie: rugby09, rugby10, etc), separating last year from this year, etc.
This gets the old picts off your computer as you are finished with them.
Only rugby pictures go into these libraries. I have other separate libraries for other topics (grand-daughter, race cars, etc).
I can justify my method since I don't ever run into a project where I would need to be working with rugby, grand-daughter, and car picts at the same time.
This method may not work for you or everybody, but it works for me and allows me to keep topics/libraries to a manageable size and easily backed up. It's not perfect, but it works for now.
Of course with today's larger MP cameras, images and libraries are forever growing larger and larger, so even using my method, a dvd is very much out dated in regards to it's capacity. Hopefully BluRay burners will become mainstream soon and allow daily backups of 25GBs of data per disc.

  • Read/burn Blue Ray discs in MacBook Pro

Does anyone kows if it is possible to read/burn Blue Ray discs in a MacBook Pro (it have a MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-898)? Thank you

No, the superdrive in the macbook pro cannot burn bluray.
There are some external 3rd party bluray players that will work, however consumer level bluray burners are, currently, incredibly unreliable

  • Sharing to iDVD

I'm presuming that the only way to burn a DVD of an iMovie is to share with iDVD and burn from there. I have just done this and iDVD tells me 'the project can't be used because it has not been prepared for sharing yet." It then tells me to share in media browser. Why does this occur when I tell it to share with iDVD from iMovie and exactly what is 'sharing with media browser'?
    Pardon my ignorance.
    Scott

I should have mentioned that you should use Professional Quality setting when burning to DVD in iDVD. It takes longer, but anything else is bad.
You can set the Quality level in iDVD. Click PROJECT/PROJECT INFO... and choose Professional Quality.
I have a Pioneer Elite 1080P TV, along with Pioneer Elite BluRay and Pioneer Elite Receiver.
I watch my home movies through Apple TV at 960x540 and they look awesome. I have played with burning BluRay movies through Toast 9, and they look really good, but they are maybe 2% better than the AppleTV solution, and it is such a hassle to boot up the BluRay player, find the disk, put the disk in, etc. that I almost always use the AppleTV unless I am testing something. (Note: If your TV does not have good upscaling circuitry, you may not be as satisfied with the Apple TV as I am).
I also have an extra HDMI Input Port for my Receiver which is reserved for a direct connection to my camcorder. The picture looks great, but I have only used it once. It just seems a waste of time to watch unedited video.
I am pretty happy with the quality of the DVDs I make, given the limitations of the format. With 1920x1080 source, they don't look nearly as good as the AppleTV. But I make them for people who have no other choice.
In terms of DVD, you can obviously get more quality out of a DVD, because the movies you buy from Hollywood look pretty good on 480i. The key is that they have high end equipment. You can get a Pro-level camcorder, say one costing $3,000 up to $50,000. (Or up to $100,000 if you go High definition). Then you would use Pro-level editing software like Final Cut Studio, which includes FInal Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro for authoring.
You could go to Final Cut Express, but AFAIK, you would still be using iDVD for authoring. People say it does a better job with DV source. For AVCHD or h.264, it will still be using Apple Intermediate Codec, but you might have more control. Can you tell I'm not an expert on Final Cut? You would be correct.
Rather than spend a lot on standard definition equipment, you might want to look into BluRay.
If you really want to use your 1920x1080 in native resolution, you need a BluRay burner. You probably need a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro, because most of the BluRay burners on the market use the eSata bus. (I think you can get an eSata card for the MacBook Pro). You can find USB burners or Firewire burners, but they are expensive, and the USB models I have seen only work on PCs.
You can burn up to 20 minutes or so of BluRay on a standard DVD in AVCHD format using TOAST 9 or TOAST 10 from Roxio (with the BluRay plug-in). This is the cheapest option, with Toast costing maybe $80. You need a BluRay Player to play the standard DVD you author using Toast.
Other folks may have better ideas.

  • HiDef camcorder choices

Hi. This is my very first post. I have been reading for days here and on other sites. So confused. Is there a HiDef mini dv camcorder out there that anyone has used and can recomemnd? What about the Sony HDR-HC1? That recieved great reviews, but will it work with imovie HD? Will it be true HiDef quality? In other words, can I shoot footage, plug it into my imac via firewire, have the footage transfer into the computer, edit it, burn onto a dvd, then play it on any TV available at this time? Some say to avoid HiDef all together for now. So what about Panasonic GS400? Also great reviews but from what I gather is better than the later version the GS500? I know the GS400 is harder to find and more expensive. Around $780 compared to GS500 for $470. I want to be able to edit. I also want hi quality images. Also I noticed that at the Apple store they sell the Sanya Xacti VPC-HD1A Digital Media Camcorder. Why sell something that can't be edited with a mac product like imovie HD? I am flexible as to prices. Up to $1200 or so. I want quality, value and not too many headaches. I just need help, as you can see. Sometimes I think you can just read TOO much info, from TOO many sources. I'm confused. Some clear help would be SO appreciated. Thanks for reading this long question.

there's actually no disk-delivery format for HiDef... Apple is part of the BluRay consortium, but no BluRay in Macs yet.. ext. BluRay burners are available ($$$$ again), including a special edition of Toast; but BluRay-r media...?? not here..
so, to store your HiDef projects you need to playout back to your camera...
or, burn a standard res videoDVD, iLife will convert.. David told us, he had better results, to playout from camera in standard.. but wait until he's back from Bloomingdales...

  • Utter confusion with HD  editing

I am considering purchasing a HD camcorder.
The choice is narrowed to 3
    Panasonic sd5 AVCHD
    Canon MV20 Tape
    Samsung hmx10 h.264
They all seem pretty acceptable to me.
I love the imac imovie 08 editing suite and it is the editing compatibility that may determine my purchase.
    1. I know I will be able to edit the panny and canon on imovie08
Will the samsung h.264 be editable( I guess it should be as quicktime uses it?)
    2. Next I need to get the films made to HD and SD TVs for family viewing.
Can any of these formats be written to dvd and played on a HD/BR
player in high definition quality?- Optimal choice I know such software is available for PCs - Boo (Ulead)
    or
Will i need apple TV to stream the HD files to my 1080p TV?-Costly! Further does anyone know if apple TV is AVCHD compatable or at least if there is a reliable file converter to allow HD streaming of compatable files?

You can use Apple TV. Apple TV will be in 720P (720i?), but most people cannot tell the difference from what I hear.
In theory, you can export your HD movie to Quicktime in 1080i format. In theory, you can use Toast 8 to burn this to a BlueRay disk if you have a BluRay burner. I have not tested this because last time I checked, bluray burners were running about $1000.

PCI 1.0 - open (covered by NVIDIA Card)

2 internal BluRay burners, 1 internal DVD burner, 1 external BluRay burner
    Video drives - SATA 3 & outboard USB 2.0 (9 1/2 TB total space)
    OK Here the story…
I have a new Sony NX5U camcorder, I first shot in in HD 1080/60i, then I used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
On the next shoot, I changed to SD 480/60i, as the final edit was to be shown from a DVD, used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
I dragged the clip to the new item (New BIN)...  to set the presets the same as the footage.... the footage still looks jaggy
I even played back the footage on the camera, captured through the HDMI port on my Black Magic MultiBridge Pro, with the same results...
I exported (re-encoded) the footage as a H-264, also as a MS AVI...brought the footage back into Premier.... looked the same..
I set the sequence presets the same as I shoot… but to no avail…. My Sony PD150 footage looks better.
The footage jerks... not smooth... forget trying to pan...
Notice the telephone wires...not smooth... I call the effect "The Jaggies" (I believe the same as aliasing)... What am I doing wrong? See picture below (the video looks much worse than the picture shows)
the telephone lines look like stair steps... (but on the Sony flip out monitor... it looks great... also much smaller monitor, though)

    Try This:
copy footage from SD card to your HDD then use a Blackmagic preset AVCHD for a new sequence (don't use Standard def footage from these cameras). If you have a BM card you should have a TV connected if so what does that picture look like. When you putput via Encore burn a DVD  not a Blu-Ray and that will downscale for you.
