Blurred Display, but Not with DVD Player

My 2 year old eMac went blurry about 1 month ago. I have since bought the video output cord for the eMac and have a 19" external monitor connected to the eMac. The eMac remains blurry, but the external screen is perfectly clear.
I recently discovered that when playing a DVD movie in the eMac's superdrive, the eMac screen shows the movie perfectly, i.e., no blurriness!
The eMac is blurry only when using the computer, it is not blurry when using the superdrive. The external monitor is never blurry.
It seems to me that if this is logic board problem, both screens would be blurry. It also seems to me that if this is an eMac screen problem, then it wouldn't be able to show DVD movies clearly.
Does anybody have an idea as to what may be going on here?

I have not received a reply with an explanation for this. I also have not pursued it further since the external LCD monitor is working fine. However, if there is an easy fix/explanation, I would be interested in it because it would free up some desk space. I also would have to buy a new mac to attach to my new external LCD.

any help would be greatly apreciated!

HD discs will not play in SD players. Also changing the prefs to SD will not change an existing HD project to an SD project (you cannot go from HD to SD in a project, you need to recreate it as an SD, though you can change an SD to HD project)

Let me know what other info you need.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
    3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.
    Good luck,

  • Burned DVD plays OK on computer but not on DVD player through TV

Did all steps through iMovie to make a DVD. No apparent problems surfaced during the process. The DVDs play fine on the computer but not on DVD player through the television. Suggestions were that I was using the wrong media, that the best was DVD-R. Same problem regardless of which was used: it may play well into the DVD and have problems when selecting a chapter, a slideshow or it can happen between chapters. There's no pattern to when it will malfunction or how it will appear. It manifests itself by slowing, going to jerky play or stopping completely; these problems may or may not be the same on DVDs that are made back to back but there is always a problem of some sort. I redid the DVD without a slideshow but the problem persists. I really don't want to do it without chapters but haven't tried doing it that way.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

    James-
I suggest you try the disc on as many players as you
    can get your hands on.
While it is good to have a player to test the final
disc on, you can't be sure that you're not facing the
    quirks of just ONE player.
Of course this is no help if you only own ONE player.
The one that is your home DVD player. Many people on
these boards will reccomend the least expensive
player to use for testing. Often newer, less
expensive DVD players are more reliable than ones
that cost three times as much.
Have you had any success making DVDs in the past?
Very limited DVD making in the past but no problems such as this.
I really appreciate the responses so far and will look at all options. The DVD is quite full (an earlier response made note that this could be a problem) Since this is a church program that will be used on a vaiety of players, a disclaimer may be included explaining the possible problems.
Interesting that a lesser expensive unit could be more reliable...

  • DVD Created with IDVD Will Play on Computer, But Not in DVD Player

I loaded some video into IMovie, then went to IDVD to create a DVD. It previews fine and the disk burned fine. I can play the disk back in the computer, but when I drop it in a Panasonic DVD Player, it won't play.
I've been burning for some time now and haven't had this problem before. Disks burned two weeks ago are fine, these are not.
I've tried a couple different brands of disks, it makes no matter.
    I'm at a loss.

One of the limitations of iDVD 4 is that 'out of the box' it doesn't support the creation of disk image files - just burning to writable media.
Your problems sound to be high burn error related. With newer versions of iDVD you can create a disk image file out of iDVD and use Apple's Disk Utility to burn the image to writable media at a low (4x or lower) speed. This reduces the amount of burn errors. None of the iDVD versions prior to the current iDVD '08 had any provision for reducing the burn speed.
What brand of media are you using? (Maxell and Verbatim have good track records around here.)

  • DVD Burned from iDVD 6.0.1 plays on iMac but not a DVD player?

After burning a DVD production on DVD-RW and DVD+RW CDs and both directly from iDVD and by first creating a disc image. In all cases they worked on my iMac but none of them worked on the DVD player. Only the DVD+RW is compatible with the player and it appears the DVD starts to load but can not finish the process. Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The iDVD production was made from scratch using Magic iDVD and some video files. The Map has no errors and there where no error messages.

Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The bug is probably the format you're burning to...
Use DVD-R. I'd recommend Verbatim DVD-R burned at 4x or slower. I'll bet that will play just fine...as long as the DVD player is relatively new (2-3 years old).

  • My DVD will play on my computer but not my DVD player

I created my first DVD using encore, and it seemed to work great. It would open and do what it was supposed to do on any computer. However, when I stick it into my DVD player for my tv, it Starts the loading process and the two blue horizontal line scroll down the tv screen and then locks my DVD player. I have to unplug my DVD player and then plug it back up and quickly hit the eject button to get the DVD out.

Something to try (if you are Windows)
Create a DVD output ISO file and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write the ISO to DVD (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Read http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1322583 for notes on installing Imgburn WITHOUT any toolbar add-ons
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help
Use Taiyo Yuden single layer or Verbatim Two layer Or Falcon Pro for inkjet printable Two layer

  • Buttons work in DVD Studio Pro, but not in DVD Player. Why?

I recently upgraded I movie I made to Dual layer disk. I had already built one for a standard 4.7 dvd but now I was putting on a director's commentary so I need more space. So I opened up the original DVD Studio Pro project, thats worked fine for over a year, then saved it as "director's commentary", then simply changed the settings for a Dual Layer. In DSP the buttons on the first menu work fine. But when I build it and open it up in DVD Player the buttons dont activate. Even when you roll over them there is nothing there.
    Whats happening?

You can find information on Reader Extensions on the developer center: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/livecycle/readerextensions/devcenter.html
For help with the buttons to navigate, go into Designer help and search for "Attaching a database script to a button" (without the quotes) and this should provide you with the information that you need.
Michael, is this where you found your information the first time?

  • Jacket Picture displays in simulator; not in DVD Player

I added Jacket Picture as described in the manual. It works in the simulator (when you press Stop, the picture is displayed instead of a black screen.)
After I build the project, it doesn't work in DVD Player. Should it?
The build folder does indeed have a JACKET_P folder, containing 3 files:
    J00_5L.mp2
    J00_5M.mp2
    J00_5S.mp2
There's also an empty PAR folder in the JACKET_P folder as well.
The log file during the build shows the jacket pictures being built....
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hey Stephen!
Yes. You have to format a disc image to hard drive and then mount and play it; or write a disc first, before the Jacket Pictures display in the Apple DVD Player - most of the time after you hit stop.

  • I can import (RIP) my music CD's but not my DVD movies. Huh?

All I want is to be able to watch my DVD movies through iTunes/Apple TV on my HDTV. Is that so much to ask for? Apparently so. At least with iTunes (although from a quick Google there are "those we do not speak of" third-party apps that'll do the job). And yet oddly enough it's no problem importing my CD music collection. So what's the difference between the music industry and movie studios copy-right protection in this case and Apple's position?
I've wanted to import my DVD movies for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I thought it would be a simple process. Little did I know, and should have realized after an early try to play a DVD movie in iTunes and the fact that Apple TV would not allow it either (main reason I didn't purchase it when first released). But isn't that the point of it, to play movies? Before the advent of Apple TV and other movie download sites there were DVD's. Or have they forgotten this? It didn't make any sense except greed. That Apple and the movie studios want us to have to repurchase all of our DVD movie collections. But not music CD's?
It's my DVD movie. I paid for it. I own it. I should be able to copy it to my Mac for playback either from iTunes or Apple TV, more so since I no longer have a DVD player. That's the whole point of all this digital technology. All my music and movies,..etc in one place, transportable, streamable. Which brings me back full circle to my question; "Why can I import (rip) my CD music collection into iTunes but not my DVD movies? This is a contradiction.
    < Edited by Host >

I've wanted to import my DVD movies for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I thought it would be a simple process
It would be if the law didn't make it difficult and/or illegal.
So what's the difference between the music industry and movie studios copy-right protection in this case
CDs generally aren't copy protected. Commercial video DVDs are almost all copy protected.
    and Apple's position?
Apple's position is that since breaking the copy protection is illegal, there's nothing they can to vis-a-vis iTunes and the Apple TV. If you want to read up on one company's attempts to come up with software that can import a DVD and the movie industry's reaction, read this:
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2345931,00.asp
    It's my DVD movie.
No, it's not. It's your physical DVD. It's not your movie.
I paid for it. I own it.
No, you don't. You own the physical DVD. You've purchased certain rights to use the content on the DVD.
I should be able to copy it to my Mac for playback either from iTunes or Apple TV, more so since I no longer have a DVD player.
Yes, you should. But the movie industry doesn't want you to do it and as such has gotten legislation written in the US and some other countries that prevent you from legally copying the DVD to any other medium. The answer the movie industry has come up with, though with only limited adoption thus far, is the "digital copy" included with some DVDs.
Bottom line, as has been said many times: US law makes it illegal to break the copy protection on any medium, be it CD, DVD or anything else.
Enough said. There's absolutely nothing Apple can do about this unless and until such time as the law is changed.

MY dvd rw drive read cds but not read dvds.it is happen suddenly when i am trying to read an dvd with read error.i am tried every solution recoverd pc to its factory condition but it will not help.could i need to replace this dvd rw drive or it will be fix?

    Hello @ahmadhaseeb31,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I have read your post on how your notebook is not able to read DVDs, but can read CDs, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
In terms of the type of DVD that can be played on your computer, is it able to read DL (Dual Layered) or SL (Single Layered) discs? Do the DVDs that you have tried on your notebook work on a separate DVD player or another computer? I would also encourage you to post which operating system you are using; and whether your operating system is 32 or 64 bit. The more information you can provide, the better!
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the necessary information, this way I will be able to research this further for you. I look forward to your reply!
    Cheers!

  • Problem with DVD Player

I inherited this computer and have spent the last couple of months upgrading it. Put a gig of ram in and added a PCI card to help with a multi screen setup but now I have hit my first major head ache. I bought a Pioneer DVR - 104 off of ebay and installed it no problem. The only issue is once I went to test out my dvd feature I found I had no DVD player. I tried updating the system but it would not install it. So I finally was able to get 3.1 off of this site and it won't start up. It just blinks on the dock once and dissapears. I checked the specs and this machine came with the superdrive but my father opted out of it, why I don't know, so there should be no issues with the hardware, can anyone help me on this?

    Hi-
I'm sorry the extras is in OS 10.4- my mistake. In OS 10.3, I believe the DVD player is in the main package. I couldn't find it to install seperately. So.......
    Let me recap-
1- The DVR reads install discs
2- DVD's won't play because DVD player does not run
3- DVD-R discs show no response
    So-
    1- The DVR is reading
2- The version of DVD player may not be compatible
3- There is no burn support
To check burn support, in System Profiler, check if under Burn Support "Yes" is showing.
My current thinking is, that since there was no DVR in the origional configuration, you may need to reinstall (Archive and install) the OS 10.3 to get the proper DVD player installed. this should also configure burn support.
The other way to get burn support is to use the patchburn that I gave you the link to.
BUT, I think you should do things one at a time. My advice is to first get the DVR to read, play and burn in that order. There is obviously a problem with DVD player, so, unless some else can advise differently, I would try the Archive and Install of the OS 10.3.
It may also be good to run the OS 10.3.9 Combined Update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
trying the combined update now wouldn't hurt. If it does not remedy the situation, try the Archive and Install, then update.
    Best-
