Blurry/fuzzy fonts on external display (Dell 2209WA)

Hi, I recently bought a Dell 2209WA and I'm not too happy with how the fonts are displayed on it. All the fonts seems blurry/fuzzy/jagged.
I have tried to change the sharpness of the display as well as the font smoothing style(I get best results on Medium) in OSX. It gets a little bit better with these settings than with the defaults but far from good.
I'm running the display on a black MacBook through DVI, native resolution 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz.
Anybody else with this problem?

I'm not sure if my problem is related, but I'm also connecting my MacBook to a Dell LCD panel via the mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter and I'm getting weird on-screen artifacts and intermittent flickering.
There's a known problem if you're using the mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter and Apple has provided a firmware update to fix the problem. If you're using that (and connecting to your Dell monitor via an additional VGA-to-DVI dongle, then you might want to grab the update.
But as far as I know, there doesn't seem to be a solution for the DVI adapter.

  • Mac applications have blurry/fuzzy fonts and other display issues

About two days ago my MBP display started acting funny. To start, I noticed my itunes font started going blurry. The words in Word are fuzzy as well. Other apps like firefox and safari I can read just fine. Next, I noticed this (http://i.imgur.com/Hfhq0.png) happening. When I move a window in any application the window would automatically start getting larger. Next, this (http://i.imgur.com/6ySCT.png) became an issue. Notice the white at the bottom of the box. Finally this (http://i.imgur.com/wYdUe.png) reared it ugly head in firefox. I have no idea what's going on. Other forums and google have been no help at all and you guys are my final hope. If you need any more information please let me know. Thanks in advance for saving my baby.

OK I don't use a two-button mouse but control-click brings up that window for me and it displays fine just pulling the background image as the border with no white space ...
I'd guess it's something related to the background image you're using, have you tested the effect when you go back to a plain colour or an Apple supplied background ? What format is the image you've set as background png, jpg or something unusual ?

  • Fuzzy fonts on external monitors

I have LG IPS226 and Dell 2312hm, and both have fuzzy fonts when connected on HDMI or mini-DP -> DVI. How can I make that fonts look good like it should be?

  • Blurry/ fuzzy fonts in pdf  when export from indesign

    Hello all,
i have done alot of research/ readings via the internet (& forum) but i still can't find a solution to this:
    - I have saved my pdfs (line drawings, texts, graphics) in illustrator.
    - i 'place' them into Indesign.
    - In indesign, i click 'export', 'adobe pdf (print)', ' high quality print'.
Result: the texts on the embedded pdfs are fuzzy. I have used 2 fonts- one is fine & editable in the exported pdf (garamond);  only 'arial' seems rasterized & fuzzy.
    What have i tried:
    - i tried exporting as 'pdf X 1a 2001' settings as it is mentioned that it is good for printing.
    - i have tried  clicking 'do not downsample' in all the 'compression categories'.
    -  i have also checked 'find font', to see if the 'arial' is true font. It is.
What else can i do? kindly advise. Thank you in advance.
    *software:
    adobe cs5
    Best,
    Jessica

    Oh no...
    i see your point now.
That text is from the usual font folder.
    - i checked in illlustrator: 'type', 'find font', 'arial'; whereelse in Indesign, it is 'arial regular'.
    - In control panels, 'font' folder, i see i only have 1 arial regular file, so both illustrator & indesign should have the same 'arial regular'...
OK UPDATE: I GOT IT RIGHT NOW:
    - In illustrator file, to create pdf: 'print', 'printer: cutepdfwriter', 'output', 'printer resolution: 100lpo1200dpi' (initially it was 72lpi), and 'graphics', 'fonts: download'- 'none' (initally: subset).
I don't know which made it work: Pinrter resolution or fonts download.
But now i could edit the illustrator pdf 'arial' font; and when placed in indesign to export, it is not blurry anymore.
Never knew something like this can make such a big difference, thank you Bob!
**but can you let me know what was it i changed that made it worked as well? thanks!

  • Leopard "Forgets" External Display Resolution

I have a 17" MacBook Pro C2D (Oct 2006 revision) that I use at work with an external display (Dell E197FP) that is connected to the laptop via the DVI-to-VGA adaptor. The Dell has a native display resolution of 1280*1024 @60Hz and this is set via the System Preference's Display panel. The problem is that quite often when I connect the display in the morning OS X (10.5.6, at present) "forgets" the resolution that has been set and reverts back to its default for the display, which is 1152*864 @75Hz. It is baffling to me that it keeps forgetting the selected resolution for the display, despite recognising it, and that it selects such an odd resolution as a default. This happens about once per week at the moment.
Does anyone have an idea what is causing this and how I can stop OS X from being so forgetful?

Are you getting one to extend your desktop? I don't, I use my MacBook with the screen off using my external only with a keyboard and mouse plugged in. I run my Late 2008 2.1GHz MacBook with a GMA X3100 using a 23" Samsung wide ratio no problem in 1680x1050. It is high resolution. Make sure you click "mirror" in Display Prefs. Be certain that you don't simply boot to both because the external will appear grainy and only be putting out the native 1280 X 800 13" MacBook resolution on the new big LCD. There are many different ways to achieve this. With the LCD on and hooked to the MacBook, turn the MacBook on then quickly close lid after the chime. Give it some time. After it boots to the external, I open the lid to provide proper airflow, some may argue it's not needed.

  • MBP Retina shows wrong resolution on external display since 10.8.4

I have a MBP retina and I'm using it with an external display, Dell U2711, connected via a Mini-DP to DP cable. It all worked amazingly well until 10.8.4 came out. Now, when I connect the display, it no longer shows the correct 2560 X 1440 resolution, but shows 1080p. The displays preferences pane does not allow going over 1080p. It does recognize the display model, though.
It started with one port. The machine has two TB ports, so one of them worked fine and the other didn't (the one closer to the user was acting up). Then it degraded further to the second port. Now, if I plug and unplug several times and fiddle with the displays control panels, I might just get it right eventually. It takes some time, but eventually the machine gets it right. At least that's what I've been experiencing in the last few days.
I don't think it's a hardware issue. It's possible that my cable is at fault, but I seriously doubt that. I'm wondering if anyone else got the same problem, just checking before I go and splurge on a new cable (these cables are not easy to find).
    Thanks,
    Z

    This worked for me:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • MBA not always recognizes external display after sleep

    Hi,
I have a 2011 MBA and use it on a external display (Dell 2709w) with the lid open. The issue with this MBA is that after sleep it often (every second time I wake it up) doesn't show anything on my external monitor. In order that the external monitor works again I have to plug the DVI cord out and in or press recognize monitors under monitor settings.
I also did a PMC and SMC reset but both did not help.
I have also done a complete reinstall witch did not help as well.
I also did a test with a MBA from a friend (exact same model) and his always works with the external display after sleep while mine only works every second time.
Could this be a hardware defect? sound pretty strange to me, but who knows...

I have managed to make the Apple Hardware test by just pressing "D" while restarting. The test, however, did not find any error - but this does not surprise me as I think it only tests the ram.

I have posted this annoying Robles to bugreport.apple.com. Hope I can get locution (although Apple normally will not respond):
On a software name Appfresh, it alerted me to update my MBPr 15 inches running latest OSX 10.8.2, with Chinese Word List Update 1.2. When I clicked on Software Pdate, app Store return No update available.
My system have Chinese Word List Update 1.0 installed, and on October 5, 2012, Chinese Word List Update 1.1 was released by Apple, as alerted through AppFresh. However, this update never get updated on m system. I have to manually download chinesewordlistupdate.pkg from reviews.cnet.com/macfixit and install it manually. By doing so, I have Chinese Word List Update 1.1 on my system.
The same problem occurred again today on November 5, 2012, where Chinese Word List Update is released by Apple. again, it fail to update from Software Update menu.
    Can you please:
    1. Explain why this problem occurred. This is so annoying.
    2. Advise me how can I get this Chinese Word List Date to update to version 1.2. Can you please send me the chinesewordlistupdate.pkg for version 1,2 so that I can manually install it on my system?
    3. How can I prevent similar problem with he subsequent version?
Why Apple don't make this update standard as other update?
Support please. Thank for response in advance

  • External Display Blurry when Mirrored

I have a 20" viewsonic VX2035 that is hooked up to my gaming rig. If I use it with my MBP and choose the mirror displays setting, when the Viewsonic is at its proper resolution (1680x1050) everything looks blurry. When at its correct resolution and not mirrored it looks normal. And it looks normal but slightly distorted if mirrored and at the 1440x900.
    Any ideas?

I've found exactly the same thing.
In "mirror mode", the external display (for me a 23" cinemadisplay HD) uses the macbookpro's internal screen's resolution (though it does uprez it), even though on screen preferences it may be set much higher (1920x1200 on mine). Hence the fuzziness.
In "dual display" mode, and in lid-closed mode (where the external display is the only one on), it works perfectly.
Not sure why this is. If anyone has a fix, please post.

  • Blurred fonts on external 1080p display

I have Samsung S24C650PL 1080p (connected with HDMI), which I bought one year ago. I used it a lot with Windows without any issues. Two weeks ago I bought my first Macbook Pro Retina 13 with Yosemite and since than it is a pain to use the external display.
All fonts are significantly more blurred than with Windows. It very unpleasant.
Especially scanned PDFs are horrible, very difficult to read, much worse than the rest of the system.
What is, however, really weird, if I move the Preview app with the PDF from the internal display to the external, it shows the right and sharp image for cca one second before it becomes blurred. So it is obviously software-related issue.
What I tried to fix it:
Deactivate "Use LCD font smoothing when available" --> no effect at all
Deactivate "Smooth text and line art" --> no effect
Use any possible settings in "Displays" --> no effect
Call the Apple support and talk with them for 40+ minutes --> no effect and no help
As last hope, I tried "Force RGB mode in Mac OS X to fix the picture quality of an external monitor" (see http://www.ireckon.net/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-os-x-to-fix-the-picture-qua lity-of-an-external-monitor) --> no effect
What is even more weird, if I use Parallels with Windows, it is okay! Even in the a window and not in fullscreen, the Windows show everything just as they should - crisp and sharp lines and fonts, while the background in OS X is blurred.
The unique "workaround" I found is related to PDFs and their readability.
Installation of Acrobat Adobe, which uses obviously a different rendering engine than Preview app. (However, I don`t like the app.)
Installation Foxit Reader for Windows under Wine (even that is much better than Preview app.), however, it has its own issues.
However, I don`t have any workaround for the rest of the system... and I just don`t know what to do...
I would appreciate any help. I do like hardware from my new MBPr, but I am pretty frustrated from bugs of this kind...

  • IMac Retina 5K (2015) with 1xTDM iMac (2011) and 1x Dell External Display possible?

I have 1 x 27" iMac Retina 5K (2015), 1 x 27 " iMac (mid 2011) and a Dell P2715Q. I'd like to know if it's possible to run the 2011 iMac in Target Display Mode and my Dell as a secondary display from my 2015 iMac? My desired configuration is the 2015 iMac running two external displays. The 2015 iMac has an AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB Gfx card and both iMacs are running Yosemite 10.10.1
I have verified that running the 2011 iMac only via TDM works. Also running the Dell as an external Display only works (either at 4K resolution or the same resolution as the external iMac (2560x1440) via SwitchResX). With the Dell running @ 2560x1440, trying to put the 2011 iMac into TDM, causes a slow grey screen, then some display artefacts when coming out of TDM. Going in and out again appears to refresh the screen. But it doesn't seem to work.
I was wondering if anyone else has a similar configuration working and if so what settings or configuration changes to make?
    Thanks!

I stopped by the Apple Store yesterday, and they were nice enough to try the Screen Sharing solution with me.
Indeed, we were able to share the screen of a MacBook Pro and display it on the iMac Retina 5K over a Thunderbolt Bridge network. (should also work over WiFi)
As I expected, (based on the native resolutions) the MBP window maxed out at about 55-60% of the height and width of the 5K display.
I didn't try experimenting with lower resolutions on the 5K.
I'd actually be OK with that solution except as we increased the font sizes, (e.g. 48 pt) we noticed a *lot* of ghosting around the characters.
I will have to try it again at normal font sizes and decide if that is something I can work with all day long.
Otherwise, I am leaning towards buying last year's iMac, which kinda' grates me the wrong way.
    Thanks,

  • Lion, Dell External Display, no higher resolutions !!!!!

    Hi,
Apologies if this is the wrong area for this to go into... but i think this is a problem with Lion rather than anything else.
Recently got a new MacBook Pro 15" (woo hoo !!!) and its running Lion.
When i go into the System Preferences > Display, the highest resolution is showing up as 1680x1050. That's fine.
Now when i plug my Dell 3007WFP external monitor into the laptop the maximum resolution that i can select is 1280x800. It recognizes the display, but just doesn't have the higher resolutions for me to be able to select.
I didn't have this problem with my old 17" MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on what the problem might be, and how i can fix it ???
Thanks in advance for all suggestions...
    Silver

    Update...
Found the solution to the problem...
Basically, its nothing to do with Lion or a fault on the MacBook Pro...
All new Macbook's ship with the Thunderbolt port. So if you want to plug an external display in which is 30" or more then you need to use a Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI adapter. I was using a Mini Display to DVI adaptar, so i was basically getting half the resolution (1280x800) !!! Now with the dual link, i have full 2560x1600 glory !!!
Liink to the device at Apple Store... http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Hope that helps someone else who has the problem.

  • External display font size

I guess this is a request for the next software update - please enable users to enlarge the font size/screen layout for the messaging previews that appear on the external screen.  It is very hard to read as is.
    Thanks!

I'll second that!  Can't believe BB loaded a gazillion fonts and sizes for the interior display but no way to apply them to the external display too.  What were y'all thinking?

  • DELL 2007WFP as External display

For some reason - and I've called both Apple and Dell about this to no avail - I can not use a DELL 2007WFP on my Macbook. The lights on the DELL simply go amber.
If anyone has anything that might help me, please please let me know - since both of these products are brand new and I would really love to get them working.

I don't have a MacBook yet but I found this info in the online manual:
To connect an external display or projector with a DVI or VGA connector to your computer:
1 Turn on the external display
2 Make sure the display cable is connected to the external display
3 Connect the display cable to your MacBook using the appropriate adapter (the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter or the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter).
Your MacBook automatically detects the external display.
4 Adjust the resolution on an external display by using the Displays pane of System Preferences or by using the Displays icon in the menu bar.
Note: Your MacBook supports external display resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 on Apple DVI displays and up to 1600 x 1200 on VGA displays.
I'D SAY STEP #4 IS THE IMPORTANT ONE HERE!
I use 2 displays on my iMac and I have to use "DISPLAY PREFERENCES" whenever I switch between an extended desktop or desktop mirroring.
    HOPE THIS HELPS!

  • Dell external display

I'm trying to hook up my macbook pro to a new Dell display i got via DVI to DVI. I've never had a problem hooking the laptop to other displays before, but when i plugged into the Dell the background image shows up but not anything else. No mouse, no applications.. nothing but the background image. It isn't oddly distorted in any way, and the screen on the laptop looks fine. I tried detecting displays, but nothing happened. My laptop and the external display are both set for 1920x1200 pixels. I tried hooking it from DVI to VGA, and when i did that the same thing happened with the background picture - only this time it wasn't the correct proportions. What's wrong?

    smartalec452,
What you saw was normal. Evidently, you had it connected in "Extended Desktop" mode. Connect it again (using the DVI-DVI cable), then open your displays preferences. You can either configure where the extra Desktop space will be in relation to your built-in display, or you can select "mirroring," which would show the same image on both displays (probably what you were expecting).
