Blurry Ken Burns effect and transitions problem in IPhoto6

I've never seen an answer for these problems, so i'm hoping someone can help. Whenever I use the Ken Burns effect (both the auto and when i do it manually) the photos are very blurry. I have tried large hig resolution photo's as well as lower es. Same result. I thought it might be proessing power or a graphics card issue, but even if i export it to Quicktime or IDVD it's the same blurriness. Is there a setting I need to change? Is my current set up just not capable of utilizing this?
Second problem is transitions. If I do different transitions between slide they frequently will be wrong. Mostly they default to dissolve. If I begin with say Mosiaic, it will work fine until i switch to dissolve, and then it will stay on dissolve, no matter what I change it to. Any help?
Sorry for two seemingly different issues, but I'm trying to do both at once.

Excellent. The generator suggestions worked like a charm. Just curious. What did you mean by adjustment layer. Surely it's something simple, but forgive me for not knowing.

  • Ken Burns Effect and Letterbox

I am hoping to find a way to combine the Ken Burns Effect and letter boxing. My problem is that my letterbox is moving with the Ken Burns Effect. I have tried lots of trouble shooting, but can not come up with a solution. Does anybody have any experience with this?

  • Why does iPhoto have Ken Burns effect and Aperture does not?

Does anyone know why this is? In fact, I can't figure out why DVD Studio Pro (I have version 2 still, perhaps version 3 has it) and iDVD don't have it either.
Why would the "Pro" level apps not have this cool slideshow feature that the entry-level app does? Is this buried somewhere in Aperture and I haven't found it?

Kevin Burns? Never heard of him.
We have this battle about once a week in one or more of the world's Final Cut Pro forums. Folks moving up from iMovie expect access to a collection of pre-canned transitions and image movements inside the expensive upgrade. "Why else would it cost so much?" one can legitimately ask.
Having Burns in Aperture might be important to you so please don't take the following observations personally.
The issue for most video professionals is one of pride and deep, deep resentment. Designing and programming of appropriately timed and composed rostrum camera moves in x-y-z space is far more complicated than the more or less random settings the K-B button will impose. And Mr Burns, bless his pointed little head, is somehow getting credit for an animation technique that was perfected long before his grandfather was born.
Including junk like the Ken Burns Effect in Aperture, come to think of it, might have been the deal breaker for us. Such tripe would have telegraphed the overall emptiness of the application.
Again, I don't mean to poke fun at anyone who feel they get useful movies out of the KB button. These are my issues. But consider the presence on your Nikon/Canon of the "Helmut Newton Effect" button. Would you be tempted to use it? More than once?

  • Limited ken burns effect and exporting out the slide show

im trying to create podcasts of photos ( perhaps 50 )
with OPTIMAL ken burns effects panning and zooming
with my own musical scores using garageband. Using transitions and Voice overs and eventually uploading to a web account with iweb.
Is it better to create this all in imovie?
Iphoto is too limited with its very limited KenBurns effect.
I also dont see the individual time setting option for each image. where is that in iphoto. It seems that every photo has to be the same duration.
some have recommended iphoto then garageband
but i see too many limitations with iphoto.
    anyone have similar experiences?

Yes you can do this with vertical photos.
Click on the little icon at the top left of the photo thumbnail in your project. This will bring up the photo editing panel.
If you want the vertical photo to show up full screen, click crop, and pick which portion of the vertical photo you want to show.
If you want to see the entire vertical photo, click "Fit" and the entire photo will be shown, but there will be black space on either side.
Now click on "Ken Burns" to add the motion effect.
    When finished click "Done".

  • I have an older version of imovie.  After I change the photos using the Ken Burns effect and save them, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' to change the zoom, the picture appears black and I can't change the zoom?

I have a five year old version of imovie that generally works fine.  However, when I add a photo using the 'Ken Burns' effect then save the movie, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' the picture appears black and I cannot change the zoom.  Any suggestions?

Have you rendered both iOS 7 and iOS 8 (both of which will work on your iPhone 5) out of the question entirely without trying every possible configuration? The animations can be disabled entirely, if that's the problem. And if the whiter-brighter user interface is the problem, there's reverse-contrast modes that darken everything. You can expose accessibility controls to gain immediate access to these functions to toggle them on and off. I guess my point is you may have decided against upgrading the OS based on an early experience with iOS 7 when Apple has since made changes in later revisions to address some of the usability complaints.
Now, Apple's instructions for downloading older versions of apps is to do so from the Purchased list, not from the app's product page.
    See here:
Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support
Let us know how that works for you.

  • MAKE A iPHOTO ALBUM ON A CD WITH KEN BURNS EFFECT AND MUSIC

I'd like to know how to save an album using the Ken Burns effect (pictures automatically panned or zoomed) and the music I've saved to the album from the samples given in Iphoto. When I try to open a CD with an album on it on a Windows pc, I get only the pictures and neither the Ken Burns effect nor the music, so all I can run is a simple slideshow, which looks anemic when compared with the full effect available on the Mac. Any ideas?

Export the Slideshow as a Quicktime Movie (File -> Export) and burn that to the CD.

  • I made a slide show in imovie using ken burns effect and when i transfer it to idvd the background shimmers.  Is there a way around this?

If anyone has done this before and knows how to keep ken burns and lose the shimmer I would appreciate your help.

Add some blur to the image.  I know it sounds crazy, but blurring the photo will reduce the flicker on a TV.  DVDs are really low res. and by reducing the image detail will help prevent line flicker.

  • Trouble saving transitions and Ken Burns Effect

I have tried to reverse the Ken Burns effect and add panning and zooming in I-movie and it will not save. When I preview the photo (it's a still photo) the preview plays like I've designed it to play; however, the new effects do not save on the movie. When I add still photos to I-movie, they are all added with the same effects-in other words, they all are panning the same way. I want to switch it up, but can't seem to get my photos to save.

    Found my answer...
Don't use FCP to create slideshows of still images. David S. provided the real answer... use Fotomagico.
What had taken me five hours to create in FCP, downsizing images, creating start and end markers for motion and adding sound... took me TEN MINUTES in Fotomagico. It's nuts.
I don't even care to guess at the insane amount of hours I spent creating slideshows over the last 8 years in FCP. I could cry.
As a photographer, I'd much rather be spending time shooting than sitting in front of a computer. This program will allow me to do that.
Again, big thanks goes to David S. for providing the answer.

  • I need to do non-constrained crops for Ken Burns effect in photo slide show

I am making photo slide shows in imovie '09. I understand the Ken Burns effect and how to set a start and an end point. I want to use the effect on vertical or portrait mode photos. i would like to have the entire photo displayed in portrait mode and have it zoom in a bit. The problem is The start and end points seem to only be horizontal or landscape mode. I can't ever get the entire image selected. How can I do this?
    Thanks,
    Tim

You need to add the letterbox (black space) in another application. iMovie's Ken Burns effect will not do it for you. You can do it in Photoshop if you like.
However, there is a way to do it in Automator, and you can do hundreds of vertical photos very quickly. That is the way I do it.
    Here is more detail:
There is also a quick way to pad your images without using Photoshop. This method will pad hundreds of images in just a few seconds.
You do it with a tool that comes with OS/X called Automator. It should be in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Automator is basically a workflow tool. It allows you to string together commands and actions into a workflow and then execute the entire sequence at once. If you have Snow Leopard, you can even add these workflows to your contextual menus that come up when you right-click.
There are many workflows that would work to pad your images. Here is an example:
In Automator, start a photo workflow and drag the following actions into the workflow from the Action palettes on the left.
    You should have something like:
1)Ask for Photos (You must select one or more photos and hit Select - you can make this easier by putting them in an album beforehand)
    2) Copy Finder Items (give it a folder to copy to- so you can find them easily)
    3) Pad Images. (put a check mark in "scale image before padding" Pick the pixel dimensions of your project...like 640x480 or 960x540. or 1920x1080
Hit Run and a dialog box will come up asking you to select photos. When you are finished, press SELECT and the Automator script will keep running.
Then at the end you should have padded images in the folder you created in step 2.

  • Ken Burns effect won't work with imovie 6.0.3

I'm hopeful to find a way to use the Ken Burns effect in my 6.0.3 HD imovie. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I can't get it to work.

Did you empty iMovie's trash after creating your clips? Did you previously apply the Ken Burns effect to that particular clip and now want to change the settings?
If you already had the clip/photo imported using the Ken Burns effect, and then emptied the trash, you cannot redo the KB settings. It is a bug in iMovie. You will get the black frame when you try. The only thing you can do is reimport the photo.
Here is an explanation of the problem (Thanks to Matti Haveri) :http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#stillupdate

  • Using the Ken Burns effect in I Photo 5

The first time I worked on a slide show I was able to use the Ken Burns effect with no problems. Later on opening I Photo and clicking on slide show I no longer have the controls for the Ken Burns effect. There is just a blank space where they should be. Why did this happen ? How do I get the controls back?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Vernon

    Vernon:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What may have happened is that one or more items within the iPhoto application package have had their permissions changed so you do not have access. Run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. If that doesn't help try moving the application to the desktop and making a duplicate of it-select it and type Command-D. Now move the duplicated to the applications folder and rename to just iPhoto. Now see if the KB controls come back.
Next would be a reinstallation of iPhoto. You'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Now reinstall iPhoto 5 and immediately update to the latest version. Then repair disk permissions.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Trying to add a pause after Ken Burns effect to hold the photo

I am trying to set a pause to my still photos after using the Ken Burns effect.  So it starts zoomed in on an area of the photo and pulls out and then I want it to hold for a few seconds so you can see the full photo.   Any suggestions?  I can't find anything anywhere???

    1) copy the photo with the Ken Burns effect
    2) place the copy after the original photo
    3) edit the copy, reverse the order of the Ken Burns effect using the arrows next to the word "Start" so the end point is now the start point, change "Ken Burns" effect to "Crop", and change the duration of the copy
If you want the pause at the beginning
    - place the copy before the original photo
    - edit the copy by just changing the "Ken Burns" effect to a "Crop"  (i.e., crop using the start point),and change the duration of the copy
If you have a "pause, ken burns effect, pause" don't use a transition after the 1st pause and before the 2nd pause.
With a group picture, you can simulate a real Ken Burns effect with
transition, pause, zoom in, pause, [pan, pause] ... [pan, pause,] zoom out, pause, transition

  • Ken Burns effects in iWeb

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Im new to iWeb and am trying to to build a home page with photos as the background that rotate from one to another and have the Ken Burns effect on them while they are on screen. Any way to do this?

Lew ~ Welcome to the discussions. If you're referring to the background in iWeb's Inspector > Page pane > Layout tab, it's not possible to use anything but a static image — although perhaps someone could figure out how to use a moving image as a background outside of iWeb's Inspector.
An alternative is a large movie slideshow with the Ken Burns effect — but it may take some time to begin playing in a browser and, if it was a Flash slideshow, would tax the viewer's processor considerably. (A QuickTime movie would be less taxing on the processor.)
A compromise is to avoid the Ken Burns effect and simply create a QT movie slideshow having a basic fading transition. Here's an example (not mine) — note how fast it loads in your browser:
    http://www.heese-cadieux.com
    ...and it's done like this:
iPhoto > select photos > File > Export... > QuickTime tab ...set width and height, etc.
Then iWeb > Media button > Movies tab ...drag in your movie created above by iPhoto.
Then iWeb > Inspector > QuickTime tab ...settings.
Note: The above generates a QT slideshow pseudo movie of small file size and thus appears quickly in a web browser. By pseudo, I mean that the non-fading parts of the movie sequence are actually one single static frame timed to stay on screen — not a series of movie frames.

  • IMovie 6.0.3 won't render Ken burns effects or Themes

I'm working in iMovie 6.0.3. Whenever I try to apply a Ken Burns effect or a theme, the red "render" bar completes, but then I just end up with a frames of empty black the same length as whatever I had tried to put there.
I tried deleting the com.apple.imovie file in the Preferences.
I used the disk utility to restore permissions.
    I emptied my caches.
    I've restarted my computer.
Do anyone have any suggestions of what I could try?
    Thanks!

Just saw this June thread - I have iMovie 6.0.4 and am having this exact problem. I can't believe that there aren't more threads about it. This is the first video I've done since upgrading to OS 10.5 and iLife 7 and then importing the old iMovie 6.0.4 for obvious reasons.
I filled the timeline with photos, set them to the music, then previewed Ken Burns Effect and it looks great. But when I tried to update using KBE and all I get is a BLACK clip that acts like a blank in my timeline. If I apply KBE directly to a photo in the photo tray the same thing happens. KBE is completely unavailable to me!
Let's keep this thread going until we find a solution. It's not the version. Thanks!

  • Won't render ken burns effect

When I try to apply the ken burns effect to a picture, after I check enable and click apply, the red loading bar appears on the image in the time line, but then instead of rendering the effect and showing progress like it should, it makes a "bing" noise and the red loading bar disappears! The end result is no ken burns effect, and the duration of the image is set to 1 second. I have never emptied the trash in imovie, which I know doing so can cause problems. So with the "emptying the trash" bug out of the question, I have no idea what could be wrong. Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the response!
Earlier today, I actually tried just for testing purposes creating an imovie project on a different networked server we have and it worked fine. I don't think the problem is happening only because I am storing my imovie on a server. If I could, I would just keep it on the server it works on, however, due to differences in disk capacities, I am only allowed to store it on the server which I have the issue with. On a side note, imovie also works fine opening the project file from different shares on the same server I am having trouble with. It seems like The problem is only happening on the one particular share on the one particular server that I have to store my imovie in/on.
Also, just wanted to mention that the reason I was able to test it on different servers, and different shares on the same server I have to use is because right now my imovie is very small (all it is is a few pictures) so I can move it around fast for testing. Even then, I have to delete it from the other places after testing (can't leave my imovie anywhere but this one share on this one server). I'd like to get this solved, because right now what I do is move it to my local hard drive, edit it, and re-upload it to the server. Once I start adding video in, I would like to be able to just leave it on the server, because I don't have enough room on my hard drive for all the video, and plus the network transfer to move the file back and forth would take forever. Once again, any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!
