Blurry photos - Premiere Elements 11

(System) Windows 8 64 bit, Core i5 4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 8 GB DDR ram, GeForce GTX 650 - Nvidia/MSI - GeForce 320.49 Driver.
Hello I recently purchased Premiere Elements 11 and Photoshop Elements 11.  My first project was a success which included video and photos of my camping trip.  I burned that project to DVD.  My second project was created through PSE which was a slideshow from photos downloaded from Facebook (small images).  I burned that project to DVD.  My thrid project was another slideshow using photos from my camera.  I burned this project to DVD.  Unfortunately the pictures came out really blurry.
After reading the forums here I resized my photos to 1000x750 pixels however, my photos still came out blurry.
After hours of troubleshooting, I decided to try to re-create my first successful movie which had still photos that were not blurry.  I used the same pictures and this time my pictures came out blurry.  Is there a setting I changed for this to happen?  The photo size from my 1st project is 4608x3456 pixels 7.73 MB.
I'm new to editing therefore I apologize in advance if I left out some critical information.
Thanks,

Moonpie,
Glad that you are enjoying the journey. For me too, that is part of the whole process. Yes, handing off a successful DVD, or BD, to a client, who loves the work, is rewarding, but continuing to learn, in the process is a big payoff too - at least for some of us.
I started way back when video was relegated to the studio only, with either a direct feed to the studio's switcher, or to a 2" tape deck. Back then, the video could only be edited by making a 45 degree diagonal cut with a razor blade, and then applying tape to splice that back together. I was working in film, as the quality and the look were so much better, and my cameras could easily leave the studio. Still, I was limited to one Audio track, to a Butt-Cut, a Fade to Black (that name changed to Dip-to-Black for digital Video), or a Cross-Dissolve (we called that a "Lap-Dissolve"). To see any of those, one had to have the two reels of film "printed" in the lab, and took at least a day - a day, before we could see if we had done well. Our editing rooms were filled with "laundry carts," or "bins," with 100's of yards of little film clips actually clipped to a rack over the bins.
I did not get back to video, until it had gone digital. Oh my, how things had changed! Even with the rudimentary software of the day, it was easy to see the technical and creative power, and that power was intoxicating.
As I had a cine background, plus many years as an advertising photographer, the last decade spent with Photoshop, it was easy for me to define a workflow for my video editing.
I was shooting only SD (Standard Definition) miniDV tape-based material, so it was easy to learn what Project Preset I should be using - NTSC DV, in either Standard 4:3, or Widescreen 16:9, at 29.97 FPS w/ 48KHz 16-bit Audio. That was it, and was so simple. The NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs of the day were powerful, BUT were still quite simple, compared to what we have today.
As I explored more, I realized that I could bring my creativity from my film days, to video, and the program would empower me for so much more. I got better, and better, learning something with each Project, and soon opened my doors to do commercial editing. Almost immediately, I began being handed all sorts of footage by clients, and some of it not meant to be edited - but I still had to edit it. That is where I learned about various file formats, and CODEC's, and also conversion programs. Though I had faced myriad formats with Photoshop, I found that was nothing, compared to the formats, and CODEC's of video. Lot of learning, but that was fun too.
As I had spent so many years doing commercial still photography, it was natural that I also began producing SlideShows, where I got to experiment with Image Sizes and also formats. More learning, through my experiments.
DVD-Video we my most common final output, and that brought a strict set of specifications, that had to be adhered to, for the DVD-Video to work properly.
In my experiments, my eyes told me that I was best off, if I did the Scaling of my camera images in Photoshop, with either Bicubic Smoother, or Bicubic Sharper (depended on the original Image), and then Saved_As PSD's, for Import into Premiere (by then, I had used several other NLE's, but ended up focusing on Premiere, as it worked best for me). I eschewed JPEG (never really liked that format with its compression), and also took 90% of the Scaling load off of Premiere. To my eyes, the quality was better, and worth the effort.
Having worked in photography, doing analog compositing, before there was digital editing, I was aware of resolution, and Scaling, and most of the pitfalls. However, as DVD-Video was still the main output, I understood its limits of 720 x 480 pixels. When I started HD TV's, and as my computer monitors increased in their resolution, I realized that DVD-Video was limited, but there was a war going on between BD and HDDVD, so there was not anything better. Rather than complain that DVD-Video was so limiting, I embraced it, as it was so, so very much better, than what had gone before, regarding video.
When BD was finally decided upon, I was happy, but many clients still needed DVD-Video (and still do), so I had to continue with it, though "something better" was out there. Then, mfgrs. began adding up-rezzing chips to their high-end DVD players, and to most of their BD players, and DVD-Video display got even better, when paired with a calibrated HD TV.
For me, it was easy to understand that a 720 x 480 video image would NOT look THAT good, when displayed on an HD TV, or high-rez computer monitor. It was like shooting 35mm film, and having to blow that up for a double-truck (11 x 17 inch) magazine spread! I knew to not expect too much, in such a case, and also normally shot 8 x 10 (4 x 5 minimum), when I was going to a two-page spread. DVD-Video is akin to shooting maybe 6 x 6 CM film, and going to that double-truck, when displayed on a high-rez computer monitor, or HD TV - never as good, as one would want. That is the nature of the beast.
Soon, we will have 4K, and when it becomes common, those old DVD-Videos will look even worse. I do not think that up-rezzing chips will be improving all that much, especially when displayed on 4K. I also do not think that we will see any disc-based delivery above BD, as everything will go to streaming delivery for the new format. Still, like some people still have VHS tapes, and players, people will still have DVD-Video and BD (which never really did take off, like DVD-Video did). All of those will look pretty bad, compared to 4K material, shot, edited and delivered in that format. Still, those old formats will be around for a bit, and other than those up-rezzing chips, there is nothing that we can do about it - except to produce the best product in those formats, that is possible, and live with the results.
Many have tried to explain the differences between, say DVD-Video and HD TV, but some folk just do not understand it. Having worked in all sorts of formats, with different resoulutions, it was easy for me. The best example that I have seen, to compare the formats is this little image:
That should be clear to anyone.

  • Correcting blurred photos in premiere elements 11

I have checked several solutions to correcting blurred photos in premiere elements 11.  Most of them turn out to be different versions and does not help me.   I have had: in expert mode select photo, filter-other-high pass.  I tried this and doesnt work.  I believe if this is the way to correct blurred photos, I am missing a step somewhere.  I have gone to enhance-adjust sharpness or unsharp.   I must be doing something wrong. or can you correct blurred photo?

    j strengh
What is the situation - I do not really see the typical 720 x 480 resolution vs HD resolution type of question. I am seeing it as a photo editing (sharpening) question which may or may not be related to further use of these photos in Premiere Elements 11.
Which of the following is applicable to your situation..
    a. You have great looking photos saved on the computer hard drive, but, after you import them into Premiere Elements, they look blurry on the Timeline and you want to try to correct that
    or
    b. You have great looking photos, but, after you import them into Premiere Elements and burn them to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, the photos are blurry in the playback of the DVD-VIDEO with your TV's DV player
    or
    c. None of the above, rather you are trying to improve the sharpness of your photos in general using Photoshop Elements Full Editor/Filter Menu/Other/High Pass. If so, have you tried the Unsharp Mask under the Enhance Menu?
Consider the distinction between sharpening an image (contrast changes) and trying to correct a bad blur  in the original.
From all that you have written, I suspect that this involves "c" and how to get the best results for sharpening an image in Photoshop Elements. If that is the case, you might seek input from the Photoshop Elements Forum here on that. Another possibility is that you may be creating pixelation in your images if you are up-sizing your images in the search for higher resolution and better quality.
Please give as much more detail to make sure that your question and its answer can be targeted correctly.
Please do not forget the follow up which is the key to success.
    Thank you.

  • Performance problems when using Premiere Elements for photo slideshows

    Hello,
I had been using Premiere Elements 9 (PE9) to make a simple slideshow for my parents from their vacation trip and I ran into some serious performance problems.  I had used it to create similar projects before, but not nearly as big.  This one is like 260 photos, so basically it is 260 seperate clips.  I have a POWERHOUSE workstation (see below) so it isn't my PC.  Even when PE9 crashes, looking at my performance monitor my CPU and RAM aren't even halfway being utilized.  I finally switched to Windows Movie Maker of all things and it worked seemlessly, amazing really.  I'm wondering if I was just using PE9 for something other than what it was designed for since there weren't really any video clips, just a ton of photos that I made into video clips, if that makes sense.  Based upon my experience with this so far, I can't imagine using PE9 anymore for anything really.  I might have the need for a more professional video editing program in the near future, although it does seem like PE has a lot of features.  How can I make sure it utilizes my workstation to its full potential?  Here are my specs:

Intel Core i7-2600K 4.6 GHz Overclocked
    ASUS P8P67 Deluxe Motherboard
    AMD Firepro V8800 Video Card

Yes, this system is blazingly fast.  I have yet to feel it slow down, even with Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator and numerous other apps running at the same time.  HOWEVER, Premiere Elements 9 has crashed NUMERUOS times, every time my system wasn't even close to being fully taxed.

    Andy,
There ARE some differences between PrE and PrPro w/ an approved CUDA-capable and MPE hardware acceleration-enabled nVidia video card, but those differences show up ONLY in the quality of the Scaling. The processing overhead is almost exactly the same, when it comes to handling the extra pixels.
As of PrPro CS 5, two things changed:
The max. size of Still Images went up from 4096 x 4096 pixels, to quite a bit larger (cannot recall the numbers now).
The Scaling algorithms have been improved, though ONLY with the correct nVidia cards, with MPE hardware support enabled.
Now, there CAN be another consideration, between the two programs, in that PrPro CS 5 - CS 6, are 64-bit ONLY, so one benefits from the computer and OS to run it. PrE can be either 32-bit, or 64-bit, so one might, or might not, be taking advantage of the 64-bit program and OS. Still, the processing overhead will be almost identical, it's just that the 64-bit OS can spread it around a bit.
I still recommend Scaling the large Still Images in PS, prior to Import, to keep that processing overhead as low as is possible. Scaled Still Images work just fine, and I have one Project with 3000+ Scaled Still Images, that edits just fine in PrPro, even on my older 32-bit workstation. Testing that same machine, and PrPro some years ago, I could ONLY work with up to 5 - 4096 x 4096 Stills, before things ground to a crawl.
Now, Adobe AfterEffects handles large Still Images differently, so I just moved that test Project to AE, and added another 20 large Images, which edited just fine. IIRC, AE can handle Still Images up to 10K x 10K pixels, and that might have gone up, as of CS 5.
Good luck, and hope that helps,

  • Problems exporting HD video from Premiere Elements 9 for Vimeo (program crashes or video is blurry)

I have a 10 minute wedding video I am trying to export from Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to upload to vimeo. I followed the directions from this video: Exporting for upload to Vimeo with Adobe Premiere Elements on Vimeo to figure how to accomplish this. The first time I followed the directions, the resulting video file was fuzzy and blurry, not at all like the HD video I could view in the program before export. Since then, I've tried exporting it multiple times with different settings, and each time the program crashes when the video is around 95% complete. How can I rectify this situation? This is a wedding video I made for a paying customer who would like their video on vimeo as soon as possible.
    Thanks for your help!

What are the properties of what you are putting on the Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 Timeline? Are you working with a SD or HD file?
What have you set as the project preset when you started the projec?
    1. So, video compression, audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, file extension, pixel aspect ratio...as
much information as you can supply....sometimes the brand, model, settings of the camera recording the video will give us all the
information that you need to set up the project correctly or to verify that it has been set up correctly.
    Case Study....
Let us assume that your video is 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second.
Project Preset in New Project Dialog
    NTSC

When you go to take your Timeline content to Vimeo from within the Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 feature
Share/Online, you will discover that there is no Vimeo choice in that version.
So, what you are going to do is to export your Timeline to a file (AVCHD.mp4) saved to your computer hard drive and then upload that file
to Vimeo at the Vimeo website.
    Share

Hi.  I have just started using Adobe Photo Elements 11 and Adobe Premiere Elements 11.  I have many pictures in my photo gallery that I would like to use in a project that I am working on.  When I opened the photo gallery it said I could not use the photo gallery because it has not been updated.  Can someone please help me with this...let me know how to do this...or...Thank you,

BNN, even though I understand what KT is saying, your thought resonates with mine. When it comes to building and maintaining my website, I see myself more as a photographer than as a web designer. Hence, even though Apple may not be actively developing (and we are guessing on this one, arent we) iWeb, the existing functionality should do plenty of good to me for next couple years at least.
That said, they released a point update a few days back and with the whole cloud thing building momentum and mobile me going for free, why would Apple want to pull the plug on such a fantastic product?

  • HOW TO GET ZIP PHOTO Files INTO Premiere elements 12

How do I extract photos from a zip file in order to drag them into premiere elements 12?

What is the file extension of this zipped folder.....zip or 7-Zip or something else?
If you have a ordinary .zip folder with a .jpeg photo inside it, you should be able to right click the zipped folder, select Extract All from drop down list, and then follow the instructions to get the unzipped folder that you open by double clicking it in order to see and use the photo.
Also, if this photo was edited in Photoshop and has a CMYK color profile, you will not be able to open it in Premiere Elements (any version).
Keep away from the Adobe Reader if all that you have is a zipped folder.
We will be watching for your progress.
    Thanks.

  • I am recording from my computer screen with an elgato game capture card.  Why is the video blurry when I import it to Premiere elements?

I am recording my computer screen with an elgato game capture card.  When I play the unedited footage on my own computer, it is clear and crisp.  When I import the footage into premiere elements, it becomes blurry.  It becomes even blurrier when I save the edited video.  How do I keep the video clear?  How do I fix it?

    Betharoo
    Thanks for the reply.
Please check out John T. Smith's information.
At this point, if you could tell us the file extension of the file involved, that would give us a start while you are
gathering the rest of the details.
You can easily get some information for us from Properties for your imported video that is blurry in the Editor.
    1. Click on Expert to get into the Expert workspace of Premiere Elements 13
    2. If you have not already, import your file into the program using Add Media/Files & Folder/Project Assets.
    3. Open Project Assets to see a thumbnail for the video that you just imported. Right click that thumbnail,
and select and click on Properties from the menu that opens.
    4. Tell us what is listed there is Properties - it should look something like this one which is specific for one of my wmv files.
Your information will be specific to the file that you right clicked in your Project Assets.
From what you have written so far, yours should show
    Image Size 1920 x 1080
Frame Rate either 59.94 or 60
Also, please go to Edit Menu/Project Settings/General, and tell us what you see for
    Editing Mode
    Timebase
    Frame Size
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
even if the fields look grayed out.
Your project settings may be contributing your Edit area previewing problems.
All of the above will keep us moving forward in the troubleshooting.
    Thanks.

I downloaded and installed Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements.  I then launched Photoshop Elements Organizer and imported approx. 28,000 photos (including some videos).  A window opened indicating that many of the photos had tags, and asking if I wanted to add the tags.  I said yes, and the process began.  When it reached 60% a window opened indicating that "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working", with the only option being to "Close program."
I've since tried to open organizer several times, but it goes immediately to "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working".  I was able to open Editor, and tried opening Organizer from Editor, but encountered the same problem.
FYI, I have an open case (#0214505556), but have not received the help I need.

This issue is with respect to Elements 13.

  • How can I mkae a simple photo edit on premiere elements 12 without using the video feature?

I was told when I spent $1000+ on my HP and all the software that I would have what I needed to edit photos and/or edit videos. I am a yoga teacher so I am posting my classes online as videos, as podcasts, and I also need to edit some of my personal photos to use for marketing material. I can see where I edit photos for a video and incorporate them in that said video but Im also needing to just edit the photos but adding text. Nothing fancy. I just want to make some flyers.

    yogawithlexi,
    Welcome to the forum.
Im also needing to just edit the photos but adding text. Nothing fancy. I just want to make some flyers.
For editing photos, to be output to the printed page (whether by a commercial printing service, or a desktop printer), I strongly recommend Photoshop Elements (PsE).
If you need to output to a video file, then Premiere Elements (PrE) can possibly do what you want, but not for the printed page - at least not easily, and with the ultimate results. First, Video is not dependent on DPI/LPI (Dots Per Inch, or Lines Per Inch), where printed material will be. Also, while PrE can output a Still Image, the quality, when printed, will be far less, than what one can obtain with PsE.
Do you currently have Photoshop Elements on your computer, or only Premiere Elements?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Want to know if Premiere Elements has the capability to show movement on a still photo? Such as zoom

I am thinking of purchasing PE 12 if it has the capability to take a still photo and move the camera around on it like many videos I have seen.  I am currently using PE 9.  Thanks for any help on this subject.

    Railfan Ken
What are you doing in Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1?
Are you keyframing the Motion properties of Scale (for Zoom) and Position (for Pan) to get a pan and zoom effect?
    or
Are you using the Edit Header/Effects/Presets and one of the presets for a pan OR zoom effect (the Presets allow for only a pan per picture or a zoom per picture but not a pan and zoom per picture).
    or
Have you been using the Elements Organizer 9 Slideshow Editor to create a slideshow with the pan and zoom feature there and then transfer the Elements Organizer 9 slideshow to Premiere Elements?
If it is the Premiere Elements 10, 11, or 12 Pan and Zoom Tool that is making you think to laterversion than 9.0/9.0.1, perhaps the following Adobe document may give you more information on that.

  • When I insert photos into Premiere Elements timeline they become pixilated.  Has anyone a remedy?

The photos I insert into the timeline in Elements become pixilated.  They looked fine in the organiser.  Has anyone a remedy to this problem please?

    Judie Sutton
    Thanks for the additional information.
If rendering the Timeline content of those photos does not resolve the photo pixelation issue as per SG's question, then please read on.
    a. Do you have a mixed Timeline of photos and video? If so, what is the format of the video and how many of these
2799 x 3500 photos are included? Do you get photo pixelation whether you have 1 or many of these photos on the Timeline?
    b. What happens to the Edit area monitor view of one of these photos if you right click the Edit area monitor, select Playback Quality, and then compare the choices of Automatic vs Highest Quality? If you right click the Edit area monitor and select Magnification, do you find the Magnification set at the default "Fit"?
    c. Have the photos been edited in Photoshop before being imported in Premiere Elements. If so, what was the extent of the Photoshop editing including effects applied and color profile?
More later depending on your results and follow up.
    Thanks.

Install the excellent 'Search Everything' utility and enter 'extreme' as a search term. Note that when you first run 'Everything' it takes time to index your drive(s). After that though it is a nearly instantaneous start.

  • Premiere Elements 4.0 shuts down 15 minutes into my photo slideshow

I have created a photo slideshow in Premiere Elements 4.0. I'm using a Gateway Laptop - 2.00 GB, 32-Bit operating system. I checked available space on my C-hard drive and it shows: 43.6 GB of available space.
At approximately 15 minutes and 44 seconds, the end of one of my songs starts to skip, and an error message pops up that says: Microsoft Windows: Adobe Premiere Elements has stopped working - a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
I checked the song where the issue occured. It plays fine in other applications. I checked the format of the photos - all are Jpeg. I even deleted all files from that 15 min 44 sec point in my project and it still hits something it doesn't like and shuts down with the error message. I defragged and performed a disc cleanup. I re-started the computer and tried it again - same issue.
So I started over. I checked it every time I added something new. Photos worked; transitions worked, the theme worked..... and then I got to music. I added 3 tracks and at 15 min 44 sec, my issue started again. I thought that maybe I had run out of hard drive space (I've read several threads on here that suggest a laptop is not ideal for PE 4 - a CPU works best). But if that were true, shouldn't my project have worked when I deleted the songs from the project? I've tried everything and am a loss. I've contacted Tech Support and am still waiting for an answer. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

When I have program closed due to DEP I have always had a warning message saying that DEP is closing the program... and then given the option to disable it for the program.
What format is your audio by the way... MP3 can sometimes make PE7 do funny things... best to convert to WAV. You could also try the Render and replace for your timeline (under Audio) this will do what it says, render your timeline and replace it with a WAV file.

  • Loss of still photos in Premiere Elements 10

I have recently installed Premiere Elements 12 and have Prem El 9 & 10 also installed. I am using the book "Classroom in a Book" to gain experience in 12. To undertake the exercises I had to use the project setting NTSC-AVCHD. My normal setting is PAL HD. When I went back to projects in 10 the still photos were shown as "media off line". The videos were still correctly present. The stills were quite OK in Elements 10. How can I get the projects in 10 back? (I have tried re-setting the project setting to PAL HD).

    Wendy and Scott
Please clarify from where you are missing stills - in the Elements Organizer and/or the Premiere Elements workspace (media area and/or Timeline).
Are you moving, deleting, renaming files and folders involved in a project after you have saved/closed the project?
Premiere Elements 10 project.prel (provided its source media are connected) can usually be opened in Premiere Elements 12 by right clicking the 10 project.prel file, selecting Open With, and then Premiere Elements 12. Since 12 edited project.prel cannot be edited again in 10, best make a copy of 10 project.prel for the editing in version 12.
Also, if you have important entries in the Elements Organizer 10 and you want them in Elements Organizer 12, look into 10 catelog conversion in Elements Organizer 12.

    Thanks a lot !
    Olivier

As Steve G. says, yes, and for most earlier versions of PrE. I recommend his great Basic Keyframing Series on Muvipix.com: http://muvipix.com/products.php?searchphrase=basic+keyframing&btn.x=19&btn.y=9
Keyframing can be applied to most Effects, whether Fixed, or applied, so it can do much more, than Pan & Zoom. The application of it is almost limitless.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
