Blurry Pictures Photo Booth/iSight

Hello
I suddenly noticed that Photo Booth is taking pictures that look blurred or fuzzy. I have the MacBook on a table (not moving) so it's not from movement. Everything has a soft focus (no, it's not from the special effect "glow", but it sort of looks like a more subtle version of that). I tried gently cleaning the lens. No luck.
Help!
Thanks.

Take the computer to an AASP or your local Apple Store for a check-up. Hopefully, you have Apple Care.

  • Recents.plist file in my User/Pictures/Photo Booth folder?

When I use PhotoBooth, a preference file named Recents.plist forms inside my User/Pictures/Photo Booth folder along with the picture. Why is this happening and can it be stopped?

Hello and thanks again BDAqua for writing. Yes, if I delete this Photo Booth Recent.plist file it will come back in the same place in my User/Photo Booth folder after I take another picture in Photo Booth. After deleting the one that was created earlier this morning, a Spotlight search shows no other file named Recents.plist anywhere on my HD. Spotlight also shows no entries named Photo Booth except the application itself and the one in my User/Pictures folder. I have no Photo Booth folder you describe to hold this preference file in my User/Application Support folder at all. The last four weekly clones I've taken also have no Photo Booth folder in that Application Support folder.

  • Photo Booth / iSight freezes the whole machine

    I have purchased a new 20" iMac.
Photo Booth seems to work fine but, so far twice while it's on, the whole computer froze twice, under identical situation. (My daughter loves playing with it.)
It's a complete freeze but not kernel panic, and only power cycling brings the machine back. I tried to "ping" from other Mac but no response from the machine.
Is there anything I can do to avoid the freeze?
    Tai

    Hello Tai
Is there anything I can do to avoid the freeze?
Depending on the age of your daughter, you might want to be sure that your Mac is protected from her when you are not watching.
If you do not force your iMac to run all the time without letting it sleep overnight, you should perform regular Mac OS X Maintenance.
Even if you keep your Mac running overnight or manually perform OS X Maintenance, whenever you have to force-shutdown or force-restart your computer you should do a Safe Boot and then restart. Do so now if you have not done so already.
If the only problems you notice are with iSight, you can try the relevant suggestion for built-in iSight in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight. Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific". Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
If your problems continue, if you have trouble with multiple applications, or if you notice that your Mac is behaving in any other unusual way, consider the suggestions in Isolating issues in Mac OS X and let us know the particulars. We will offer other suggestions based on the details in your response.

  • Photo Booth iSight "in use by another application" - possible fix!!!

    Hi everyone.
I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.10 and a few days ago I developed the problem of the inbuilt iSight camera in my new 20" iMac failing to work with Photo Booth, iChat etc. I kept getting the dreaded message "in use by another application".
After trying various fixes and tips from elsewhere I finally came upon a website which had a hint saying you could disable the iSight camera by moving the "QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component" file from the System/Library/Quicktime folder.
Even though this wasn't related to my problem I checked to see if I had the file and realised it wasn't there! So I downloaded it from another source, popped it in the folder mentioned above, and hey-presto! My iSight is now working again. I have no idea why the file was missing originally.
If anyone else has had this problem please check this out, it may just work for you too!

You can get it here. http://techslaves.org/index.php?page=17 It is in the first part of the page there are two links.

  • Photo Booth & iSight

My Core2Duo iMac is only 5 days old and suddenly I have a green image where my image should be. iChat AV works, but Photo Booth does not switch on the camera. I contacted Apple Australia and they worked me through some steps which involved taking out a file called "com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist". That did not work. I now have to take it to a Authorised Repairer. I bought an Apple for thier robustness, and after 5 days (the camera is not damaged in any way, niether is the computer) I have to get it repaired??? Can anyone help me, so I don't have to get a repair? it happened infrequently before and it suddenly came back, but it seems to me that Photo Booth can't switch on the camera, because iChat AV can..
    Help MUCH appreciated.

    This happened once before, so I think it is software related;
iChat or Photo Booth doesn't show video
I would download the 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel and install from the desktop. Stop all other apps and disconnect everything from Firewire or USB except the wired keyboard and mouse. Let the Mac concentrate on the update. Have patience, this update takes awhile to install itself and requires two restarts. After the second restart completely shut down the Mac. After about 15 seconds restart and in your user account go to Apps>Utilities>Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on your startup volume.
    Now try Photo Booth.

  • Annoying Photo booth/ iSight problems

I often record videos using photo booth. and today....
The videos cut out before i pressed stop. They lasted about 37 seconds and then just cut out randomly, when i was recording however, it say it was still recording and ive set it so my screen doesnt dim withing 30 minutes whenever im recording.
And then when it finaly fracking worked, the ONE THAT ACTUALLY WORKED had no sound!!!! the other ones had sound, but stupid mic just decided not to work?
The only programs running was photo booth and the always running finder.

    Some ideas you can consider:
    (1) Your system info shows Mac OS X (10.5.6)
If this is correct, use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions. Then download and install the latest version of Leopard:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
Immediately after the restart that completes the update, repair permissions again. Then test to see if the problem is resolved.
    (2) Verify that you are not clicking anywhere outside the Photo Booth window while recording. When running Photo Booth in Mac OS X 10.5.x on my G5 Mac, Photo Booth immediately stops recording unless its recording is the currently active window.
(For other readers, Snow&Leopard Photo Booth does NOT stop even if its window is not the active one.)
    (3) Test recording with iMovie and QuickTime Pro if you have it to see if they also quit early.
If apps other than Photo Booth record properly but you do not want to use one of those that work properly, it is possible that a corrupted Photo Booth Preferences file is causing your problem. Quit Photo Booth (and all other applications) and throw away the Photo Booth Preferences file (com.apple.photobooth.plist) from your Home / Library / Preferences folder. A new preferences folder will be generated when you restart Photo Booth to test whether it works now.
    (4) If resetting preferences did not help but you still want to use Photo Booth, reinstalling the Photo Booth app might help.
    (5) You might also see if any of the suggestions here help you:

  • Photo Booth doesn't show all pictures taken

I reformatted my iMac and now the pictures taken before the reformat don't appear in PBooth. Only the newly taken ones appear, although I can see the old ones in the Finder in the same location as the new ones (User/Pictures/Photo Booth). There are over 100 pics in that location, but only 7 show in PB.
Why can I not see them all in PBooth?

Check the Recents.plist that Photo Booth uses to keep track of its images: ~/Library/Application Support/Photo Booth/Recents.plist. I would guess that your Recents.plist currently shows only 7 entries. To fix the problem: (1) Duplicate the file, just in case you need it back. (2) Open Recents.plist in TextEdit and then add a line for every item in ~Pictures/Photo Booth following the pattern in the array section: for example, insert "<string>Photo 4.jpg</string>" to add Photo 4.jpg to the images PB recognizes. (3) Save the file.
As an alternative, you could recover your old Recents.plist from a backup and then modify that file to match the content of ~Pictures/Photo Booth.

  • Photo Booth is unable to save picture!

    Hello!
Photo Booth was functionning for a year without any problem, but now I get the following error message:
""There was a problem saving the photo file /Users/claire/Pictures/Photo Booth/Photo 1.jpg. This photo cannot be saved.""
I cleared all the images from the Photo Booth library, memory space should not be the problem.
    Any ideas?

  • Lost Photo Booth pictures

    Hi friends,
We got a new iMac with Photobooth. The kids made hilarious movies the first day. The next day (after we restarted the machine or mounted migration assistant a second time - I'm not sure), all of the Photo Booth entries were gone. Is there any way to retrieve lost PB pictures?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you looked in the following location:? Macintosh HD/Users/yourusernam/Pictures/Photo Booth Folder.
If it is not there, I believe that it may be gone...

  • Where to Locate Initial Setup Photo Booth Account Picture

My wife accidentally selected a different Photo Booth picture and set it to our account picture. She is now very upset because the initial picture was one she really liked and it was from Christmas morning... Anyway, the picture is not present in /Pictures/Photo Booth. Anyone know where else this might be located?

I don't know if this will help but open Accounts in *System Preferences*. Now choose the account the picture was with. Click the current picture on the little down arrow that appears when you do a mouse over and a drop down window will appear. Choose *Edit Picture*. At the top of the box you will see a choice that says *Recent Pictures*. Click it and see if the picture is still available there.
I checked this out and it stores at least 18 pictures here. I have four different snapshots that show here that were taken while trying to get a good one. Still trying:->

  • Photo booth effects in imovie

Is there a feasible way to use effects from photo booth in imovie? I would like to have the background-effect and use my isight-camera. There is no effect to choose. Unfortunately the quality is too bad if I record directly from photo booth. I did not found a way to optimise the quality in the application itself. Thank you for your help! I would like to use it for a project with my students.

Is there a feasible way to use effects from photo booth in imovie?
    Not directly from either app.
Here are a couple of alternatives you can consider:
    (1) Record the clip in Photo Booth (PB) using the effect you want. Then quit PB and launch iMovie (iM.) Import a copy of the clip located in your Home > Pictures > Photo Booth folder and named "Movie xx.mov" into iM.
    (2) If you have iMovie HD (before iMovie 7.x), record a clip and add Editing > Video FX after the clip has been recorded. These are not identical to the effects PB adds during recording, but they can approximate some of them on clips you have already made.
I suggest a short test first to determine whether you like what you can do before you record an entire project without knowing if you can approximate the effect you want.

  • Going on a Trip! Photo Booth help?!

Hey guys I recently bought my macbook white after tons of saving up. I LOVE IT. Iv'e had very little problems transferring from windows to mac, especially since Ive grown up with windows. Anyways. I am going on a huge road trip, and I want to take video journals with photobooth. I already have a ton of pictures on there, and I want to start fresh. Here comes the question: How do I delete photos from photobooth, without it deleting right off my mac?
    Thanks so much!

    You're welcome, Sami56
    And thanks for the star!
I have one more question for you...
I accidentally deleted photobooth ... re-installed ... ever since, I have trouble with ... sound...
Sometimes ... sound comes back after a couple of days... sometimes not.
Intermittent problems can be difficult to resolve. I suggest you try the easiest things first, but you can use these suggestions in any order you like.
    (1) Because the problem occurs only occasionally, it might be due to changes in your system settings. System Settings _should not_ change unless you modify them, but, the next time you find that Photo Booth (PB) is not recording sound, IMMEDIATELY verify that the microphone you think you are using is selected as your input device in System Preferences... > Sound > Input and that the input level is adjusted appropriately there. Additionally, System Preferences... > Sound > Output settings must be set to the correct output device, balance, and output volume. Also, be sure your speakers are not muted via the keyboard. Now try PB again to see if the sound works. If all settings are correct, but the problem remains, consider (2) below.
    (2) If you have not restarted your Mac today, do so and check the recorded clip again to see if PB will play sound now. If not, use PB to record a few seconds of you saying something. Then play it back with PB to test whether sound works in this clip. If so, you may simply need to restart your Mac more often than you usually do to keep simple apps like PB from becoming problematic. If the test recording does not play sound in QT either, move on the the next possibility.
    (3) Restart your Mac. Then open your Pictures > Photo Booth folder and find the test video file that you just created. (Unless you made other video clips after you made the test video, its name will be "Movie xx.mov", where "xx" is the highest number you see in a movie file name.)
Now hold down the <control> key while you click on the test movie clip file. Open the file with QuickTime Player. Click the QT play button and see if sound plays in QT. If the sound plays in QT, PB is recording sound, just not playing it back. If no sound plays in QT either, move on the the next possibility.
    (4) Restart your Mac. Then use iMovie to record a few seconds of you saying something. (Use your Mac's iMovie > Help if you need assistance on how to record video clips into iMovie from your built-in iSight.) Then save and play back the test clip with iMovie to test whether sound works in this clip. If iMovie works reliably for you, you might want to use iMovie for your "important" video recordings, at least until you can find and fix the cause of your PB problem. Remember, PB is a basic, "fun", application that makes quick snapshots and videos, but serious video recording is most likely more reliable in iMovie.
    (5) If you want to consider some other possibilites, use your Mac's  > Software Update... to be certain that your system software and all your Apple apps are up to date. If your software is up-to-date, but the PB problem remains, you can also consider anything relevant from the list of suggestions in this post:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7089133&#7089133
    (6) Because you say the problem began when you reinstalled PB using Pacifist, you might want to reinstall all of your Mac's Apple applications software to verify that your software is not damaged. If you need help, see the instructions in the users guide (manual) that came with your MacBook. If you do not have the manual with you, you can download the manual for your model from this page:
      http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macbook
If reinstalling only your applications software does not resolve your problem, backup all your important data and reinstall all your MacBooks software. If you need help, instructions on a complete reinstall are also in the manual. (Reinstalling all your Apple software takes a LONG time, so don't start it when you will need to use your Mac soon.)
Anytime you use an installer that asks for your system administrator password, I suggest that you repair permissions *before AND after* running the installer.
Once you have reinstalled and repaired permissions, use your Mac's  > Software Update... to apply any needed updates. Finish the update process with another permissions repair. If you need help but cannot find what you need in your MacBook's Disk Utility > Help, see this Apple document:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh17.html
Don't be concerned that the instructions are for OS X 10.4. Permissions work the same in 10.5.
    (7) If your problem continues and you need more suggestions, when you post back be sure to list which of the above you have tried. Also include any new info you found while applying those suggestions. We will try to offer specific suggestions based on the details in your response.
    Cheers,
    EZ Jim

  • Photo Booth Not Working

Hi there! OK. Seasoned user here, just can't quite figure this out... My Photo Booth application isn't working correctly. It is not saving the picture. After I take a picture (of myself, for example) it will freeze on the picture and not show the photo down below, its just blank. Then, I have to close the program. When I restart it the photo is not there... I tried trashing the plist file for Photo Booth to no avail. I tried restarting, repairing permissions, etc. Nothing works. I even tried reinstalling the "bundled apps" dvd and no go... Ok, can anyone help me with this? Am I going to have to reinstall Mac OS X? I would rather not since it's fully updated to 10.6.3 (and since I recently had to wipe everything out and start over already) someone please advise... Oh! Another tidbit.. I checked the Console log after Photo Booth freezes up and it keeps reporting this in Console:
"* -[NSCFArray initWithObjects:count:]: attempt to insert nil object at objects[0]"
    Help!

To all those having the same freezing issues in Photo Booth (not allowing you to save photos within program) Discussions user "maahs_k " has helped me. Here was his solution for another user that ultimately helped me! maybe it will help you too...
check your photo booth folder permissions
    macintosh hd/users/your_user/pictures/"photo booth"
I've had a number of the machines at my building have that folder's owner become blank or change to system.
once you have the folder selected in the finder go to
    File->"Get Info"
and if your user isn't listed as the owner with
    read & write
privileges then click the + to add your user and/or change your privilages then try to take a picture in photobooth.

  • I can't use Photobooth - when I open the app, I get the message: "Photo Booth couldn't save your photos - Photo Both encountered an error when trying to save your photos. You photos cannot be saved at this time."

I can't use Photobooth - when I open the app, I get the message: "Photo Booth couldn't save your photos - Photo Both encountered an error when trying to save your photos. You photos cannot be saved at this time."
i tried adding user macintosh hd/users/your_user/pictures/"photo booth"  but still photo booth is not working and even images in photo booth cant be deleted they keep coming back

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use  another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Photos from photo booth being saved with weird titles?

On my imac, when you save a photo from photobooth, its named the same as it was in photo both (such as Photo 1189.jpg)
But on my macbook, when i save photos they save as Photo on 2010-10-13 at 15.54 #3.jpg
Is there any way to change how they are saved? Its an organization issue.

Any way? Yes, but the solution may create even more organization issues. Apple has changed the way Photo Booth assigns filenames. Are you running different versions of the OS on your iMac and MacBook?
What not to do . . . . A file within the Photo Booth application can be modified to change its filenaming conventions. But before you begin to tinker with the MacBook, you'll want to have a backup so that you can easily return to where you started. Or, at the very least, work on a copy of the Photo Booth application so that you can toss it if you don't like the results.
    Steps to modify the application:
    1. Close Photo Booth.
    2. Control-click on Photo Booth.app and select Show Package Contents.
    3. Work your way to:
    Photo Booth.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localizable.strings
    4. Open Localizable.strings in a text editor such as TextEdit or TextWrangler, scroll to the "Default/photo file name format template," and change the next line from:
    "Photo on %@ at %@" = "Photo on %@ at %@";
    to:
    "Photo on %@ at %@" = "Photo";
    5. Save the file.
The next photo you take with Photo Booth will be called "Photo.jpg" and it then will be followed by
    Photo #2.jpg
    Photo #3.jpg
    Photo #4.jpg
    Photo #5.jpg
    etc.
But note that if you later decide to delete Photo #3.jpg, its number will be used for the next photo you take. In other words, with a gap in the sequence, the sixth photo will be named Photo #3.jpg, and the seventh will be Photo #6.jpg. After several rounds of deleting, the numbers attached to the photos will become nearly meaningless.
What to do instead . . . . I'd advise that you adapt to Photo Booth's new naming conventions rather than try to return to the old. Resisting Apple's changes to Apple software is a losing game. System updates have a way of silently overwriting application modifications.
Or you might consider a method of postprocessing the files that Photo Booth stores in Pictures/Photo Booth. A folder action that watches Pictures/Photo Booth for new additions and automatically changes their names as they're added might be the best approach. Perhaps someone in the Mac OS X Technologies/AppleScript forum can help with a folder action script.
