Blurry stills on Playback

I know I am probably missing something very simple. I am using Premire Elements 9 and when I play my show the stills are blurry but if I pause it the are crystal clear. How do I fix it?

10.10.1 - final cut pro 10.1.2 - File > Share > "Save Current Frame" produces blurry stills now, jpg and psd. the source is not blurry (as i look at the frames in the Project window). i've done this for years on FCP and got acceptable results. any tips if i accidentally changed some preference. my source are imported old MiniDV tapes stored in default FCP library.
    thanks for any info!

this NEVER would have been solved if TW didn't solve it LOL! THANK YOU! in 1999 i was a windoz user and i wanted to make some movies. windoz required me buying special "media disks", special software, extra powerful mother board... and a friend in the media business said, "get the new imac dv with imovie 1". for the next 5 years i made incredible movies using the sony mini dv tapes and mac. people thought i was a professional but the simplicity of the imac dv was the genius (and it's creators). i started using fcp a few years back always made frame stills, i've never had a problem and never heard of "interlacing"  until tom's post above. i don't think i just set this as a default? and i don't know why anyone would want interlacing if it makes your still frames/movies blurry LOL! i can read up on it later.
here is a youtube showing how to turn it off. THANKS again Tom!!!!

below is a successful frame capture after changing to the Project Properties to 720p (and not 720i = interlace which seem to be the new default?)

    #2 Playback is blurry
    Shane's Stock Answer #2:
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.
And DPI is meaningless in FCP...in video altogether. It can be 300 DPI, or 5DPI and the picture would look the same. It is the DIMENSIONS of the picture that matter. 720x480 if you intend it to fill the screen with no moves, larger if you intend to do any push ins or pans across.

  • Panning and scaling image stills - jerky playback

when I render out a movie of my project that has still images that are

How can get the motion so its smooth and does'nt stutter

If your computer is up to the data rate required by the codec and frame size, and the image is still juddering then you're in the world of wrong panning...
Unfortunately that is not always the case...
Below a scenario that has been driving my nuts, nuts :
On ANY Mac when viewing in quicktime the following applies:
(Before anyone is tempted to say 'But my Mac will play back 1080p' - mine TOO.... But NOT when moving 1080x1920 pixels
over an extended amount of time!!!)
    1) Boot up you Mac
    2) Prior to launching ANY others apps, launch the quicktime player with the 1080p pan
    3) Use the Plus-Minus keys to set the QT window to half size.
    4) Hit play. Shot play wonderfully.
    5) Open Premiere Pro or After Effects and do an hour's worth of intensive work.
    7) Close all the adobe apps.
    8) Open the QT player and try step 3 and 4 again.
On my Mac which is about as fast as they come... THAT movies which used to playback VERY smooth now looks as if
someone is having an epileptic seizure !
Do a restart and it all looks smooth again. Work an hour in the two a.m. apps or other apps for that matter and your are back
    epileptic seizures....
No matter how much one would like his movies to playback on a computer..... As of today, I have yet to come accross
a CPU capable of moving 1080x1920 pixels SMOOTHLY over an extended period of time.
Hopefully, the future holds more for CPU-viewing of Video !!!

  • Still no playback to a DV deck... CS4

Similar to the recent "Export to tape CS4!!!" thread, I still cannot play firewire DV footage through my Sony DSR-30 deck. I tried the settings in sequence/sequence settings/playback settings, but that doesn't solve it. If the DSR-30 is on, and I hit the spacebar to playback, the time marker thing does not move, but playback happens on the program monitor - and a blank screen from the DSR-30. Here's another related question - when I turn on the DSR-30 I get a message to install a new device, but I always click on "ask me later" since I know of no known driver for the DSR-30. I'm using Vista 64 Business on a quadcore 9450 with 8 gigs of ram. I bought a separate PCI card for firewire, since I recalled having problems with my last computer and the built in firewire port.
My workaround is tiresome - copy an AVI file of the project over the network to my old computer with Premiere Pro 1.5 and export from there!

I am not sure if this is of any use, but I recently posted the message below
    in the forum.
I was unable to capture from a couple of Sony decks. My PC was simply not
seeing the decks and because the PC couldn't see them Premiere CS4 couldn't
capture the video. I had the same problem on a Avid system too.
It seems to be fine now that I've rolled back a driver to an earlier
version. I realise you are running Vista while I was running XP but it might
    be worth looking into.
You could also try disabling the 1394 Net Adapter in Device Manager (does
this still exist in Vista?) under Network Adapters, to see if that helps.
I have a sneaking suspicion that something somewhere has been broken in a
service pack driver upgrade, but I suspect it's at a very geeky deep level
as I found some devices still worked while the Sony decks didn't. So it
might be something with how Sony implements the protocol.....

    -----Original Post-----
I recently found my PC wouldn't recognise either a Sony DigiBeta J-30 or a
Sony HDCAM JH-30 deck (although it would recognise a Sony HDV camera and a
Samsung DV camera) and because the PC wouldn't see them I couldn't capture
anything in PremierePro CS4. It isn't the decks, as I plugged them into an
iMac and iMovie was controlling and digitising from them without any
    problems.
I found a site which suggested a problem with a Firewire drive not working
properly after installing SP3 might be down to a driver, sbp2port.sys, and
recommended rolling it back to the SP2 version*. I've done this and it seems
to have worked for now, although it took a few goes turning the decks on and
off before they were seen which makes me wonder if this was the complete
solution or not as I never had to do this in the past with these decks.
Has anybody else had any problems capturing over Firewire on a Windows XP
    system after installing SP3?
    I'm running a Dell Dimension 9200, 4GB RAM (3GB switch enabled), PremierePro
    CS4 4.0.1, Windows XP Professional SP3

  • Blurry Stills and Titles

    Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum so go easy on me
I have used Premiere in the past and just recently came back to it. I have Premiere CS 5.5. I just created a very simple sequence consisting of stills and a few titles that I created with the Title tool. The stills are hi res images, yet when I render out the project, they are no where near as clear as they should be.
The Image sizes are 576x 874
I am using the motion effect to move across some of the images.
I am exporting to H.264 so that I can post it on our You Tube channel
I have tried resizing in Photoshop and that didnt work. I have tried to de-interlace, that didnt work.
I have exported the media out and played it back and it still looks blurry. I am viewing on a flat screen computer monitor.
I know there have been countless posts about this, but I have tried what seems to have worked for the others and I have not been as successful.

Once the Sequence has been set, it stays. Just create a New Sequence, per your desired attributes, and then Copy your Assets, pasting them into the New Sequence. For Titles, I would NOT Copy/Paste those, but create them anew. The new Titles will be created to match the New Sequence.
If your Video Assets are not HD, up-rezzing those can be problematic.
    Good luck,

  • Blurry Still Photos in PE 9 (Windows XP –SP3)

When I take sharp still photos, at any resolution and in any format (tif, jpg, psd), they look sharp on a standard def. TV from a burned DVD with a Project Setting of NTSC-DV – Standard (4:3) ONLY.  Using NTSC-DV – Wide Screen or NTSC – Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder Standard or Wide-Screen, the stills are slightly, but definitely, blurry.  Not a problem if I just want a DVD of stills, but a problem combining video (my camcorder is memory card, std. def., wide-screen) with stills.  The video looks nice and sharp.  Any suggestions? Thank you

Hi all.  I want to thank each of you for taking the time to continue to help me.  I really appreciate your efforts.
To minimize duplicate responses, I am pointing each of you to this response.  I hope I address all of your comments.
First, I am viewing the photos on a 2 NTSC TV’s.  One is a traditional CRT picture tube, the other is a rear projection from individual color CRT’s.  I will be checking them out on a state-of-the-art LED-LCD in a few days.  Simply, when I set the Project Setting to NTSC-DV Standard Definition 4:3 (meaning full screen 640x480) the stills look quite good.
The problem occurs when I use the Project Settings listed as NTSC-Hard Drive Camcorder, etc. (meaning mpg coming into PE9 like via a card based camcorder (mine is std def)) Wide-Screen 16:9 with input set by PE9 as 720x480. The still photos are recomposed with black bands on each side (either by me manually in PS9 or by PE9 automatically – no difference in image projection).  I want to use this setting since I want to combine widescreen video with 3:2 still images in the same project.  These are distinctly blurry, but not horrendously so. (I know, not a very scientific/objective description)
And, while I agree with comments made regarding down-rezing, my actual tests showed the best results from a large 3000+ x 2000+ pixel tif file than from any other size and format (I have tried many combinations).  In fact, 480 pixel (height) jpg looked to me just slightly better than 480 (height) psd, which made no sense given that psd is supposed to be lossless and jpg is lossy (although I used the least compression available).
Re. interlacing, I did freeze frame and there was a slightly better image displayed, but not as good as the full screen not frozen.  I have not yet tried what I would normally consider excessive sharpening to compensate for the still image problem.  However, this is still troubling given that full screen looked good.
I am gong to continue to test as time permits, but I wonder if there are 2 compounding problems.  First, NTSC TV has 1440 lines of scan, exactly, 3 times 480 pixels, whereas, based on my calculations, 16:9 widescreen letterbox does not yield the number of scan lines an integral multiple of 480.  Second, PE9 lists widescreen as 720x480, yet if I take a pixel height of 480, 16:9 should yield a width of 853.  While I understand CRT TV’s cut off part of the picture, that oversized width from 720 seems a bit high.  (I also know that some number of scan lines are not used in the image, but don’t remember whether these are within the 1440 or in addition to.)
Ted, you mentioned that the stills should be multiples of 640x480 up to 1920x1440.  Why not 1920x1080 which gives the 16:9 widescreen format?  I have not tried these numbers yet, but will when I get back home.
One last complication is that a project setting of NTSC-Hard Drive, full screen 4:3, was also blurry.  I would be willing to believe there is a problem with PE9’s resizing calculations or an issue with using the “right” pixel resolution for widescreen if all full screen settings looked good and only wide screen looked poor.
I know that’s a lot to digest, but better more info than less.  And, again, thank you very much for your help.

I'm trying to play some movie exported from final cut pro HD from another computer- these files were using the codec HD 1080i and i'm thinking this might be why i can only hear the sound, whilst the image shows up as a white screen.

  • Blurry / Pixelated R3D images in Premiere CC 2014

FYI, for anyone else (like me) who has experienced pixelation / blurry images when viewing certain R3D files on the timeline or in the source window in Premiere CC 2014: this issue can be solved by right clicking on the problem clip(s) in the timeline or in the project files panel, selecting "Source Settings," and clicking "Save to RMD." You'll see the image become fully sharp again immediately.
This blurriness happens even when the still and playback resolution settings are set to "Full" in the program and source windows, and it isn't fixed by adjusting sequence settings. It was still visible even after exporting to Quicktime files, which created a huge headache for us as we tried to figure out what we were doing wrong in our sequence or export settings. Turns out both of them were fine, it was just this "Save to RMD" glitch.
An Adobe staff member replied and said they will fix this in around a month: Red footage pixelated on Import into AE.

Update: Unfortunately it's not all good news.
Trying to render out to H.264 wiht Mercury CUDA still gives a crash rendering with the typically uninformative 'Unknown Error'. Software rendering does not, but it's very slow.
Miraizon Codec and the Premiere native Cineform also crash with 'unknown error'. However I can render out using Cineform Mov at 12bit using my registered copy of Cineform. Not fast, about 1/8 real time.

  • Voice memo playback low volume, ipod touch 4th gen bluetooth

After recording a voice memo on my ipod touch 4th gen.  I play it back on my bluetooth JBL flip.  Now when I playback sound levels are sometimes extremely quiet, and other times play at normal volume.  Volume on Ipod touch and JBL flip will be maxed out and still volume playback are extremely quiet.  I have tried turning off and on Ipod and not found anything work consistently at solving this issue.

Do you have a Phone? In your case i would save some money for an iPhone. Like i am doing now - i also got a 4G iPod.
Anyways if you really wanna go for another iPod, take the 5G now. The 5G is a big update from the 4G and Apple released it last year, so i think that the 6G will come in 2014.

  • 30 gb iPod/no video playback:-(

I've tried "resetting" the unit by holding down the "menu & center button" and still no playback. I've rebooted the computer...didn't work. I even tried changing the playlist (i.e. taking the video off the iPod and then reloading it)...this didn't work either. The video/tv show(s) were purchased from iTunes and it used to work. I'm currently running the 7.7.1 (11) version of iTunes and I just checked for software updates... there were none. any other suggestions? I sure hope so:-(

You have to add the artwork yourself.
Here are a couple of methods.
First off, make sure you have "show album art" enabled in iPod options.

Go to Google Image Search and type in the artist/album name and click on search images.

Double click on a picture you like, then at the top of that page click on "see full size image".

When you get that image, simply copy/paste it into the space for album artwork in iTunes.

Make sure you select the album in the browser of iTunes before you copy/paste.

You'd be surprised what Google Images can bring up. There are literally millions, and even obscure album artwork can be found.
In the unlikely event that Google can’t find an image, you can also get artwork from Amazon.
If you’re happy using images from Amazon, and don’t want to copy/paste, then iTunes Art Importer is a nice free program to do it for you.

  • Terrible Video Playback in Photoshop CS6

I'm working on a computer that is more than fast enough to play 1080P video from DSLR. Specs are Intel Quad Core Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz, 6 Gigs of DDR2 800 RAM, Quadro 2000 GPU, and RAID 0 7200rpm scratch drives. Photoshop has 4 gigs of RAM dedicated to it and GPU acceleration is turned on. When I open up a video recorded from my Canon 60D that consists of 1080P video at 30fps, I can not get playback to be better than 17fps. It is terrible and I have no idea why this is happening. Last night I installed all available updates for CS6, updated to windows 8.1 and did a clean install on my GPU driver from nVidia for windows 8.1 64bit. STILL terrible playback. As soon as I add an adjustment layer to the video, it drops to 4fps. What is happening. I don't think these videos should be playing back this slowly. If I watch them in another stand alone player, the frame rate is perfect.

I don't think these videos should be playing back this slowly.
But then again, PS is not a video editing app like Premiere, is it not? Not to dismiss your point, but expecting things to be realtime in PS is a bit optimistic, even more so once you add effects and adjustments. It simply isn't meant for this. Actualyl processing video is different from just playing it back and whatever evil combination of circumstances prevents RT playback on your system is probably not something that can be fixed or at least not easily. As a start you might wanna run some system monitoring tool to detect potential bottlenecks and e.g. try different screen resolutions, turn off color management and so on - anything that may contribute to consuming processing resources, even if not in an obvious, conscious way. Also check the storage location of the video. While it may have enough I/O speed for buffered playback, it may not be sufficient for directly playing the footage in PS...

  • CS6, Spacebar not enabling playback.

So I was up all night editing this promo video, and while my video is rendering I decide to go on the internet and download this plugin engine from CoreMelt for transitions.  I Install the plugins and I restart my computer, and all of a sudden, Premiere won't playback.  So, after restarting and troubleshooting I decide to just uninstall CoreMelt's plugins but still no playback when I hit the spacebar.  I can scrub through everything and hear audio and even render.  However, when I just want to play, it will not cooperate with me.  I then updated my MAC OS 10.9.3 and still the problem is not solved.  I just find it weird it was working perfectly all this time and now all of a sudden it's not working.
    I've tried restarting.
I've tried changing my audio playback device from my PreSonus StudioLive mixer to my internal speakers.
I've tried disconnecting from my external video monitor.
I've tried opening up other sessions to see if playback works, and no.
I've tried updating all my software.
I've already wasted a good 2 hours trying to troubleshoot. I am running out of ideas on how to trouble shoot, anyone out there experience the same issue?

For some reason, when I hit Return, my video still renders and plays back perfectly but when I hit the Spacebar, nothing!  I can pause, fast forward & rewind with J, K & L but the spacebar does NOT work.  It's driving me nuts!  I'm bypassing it right now but reassigning my L (play forward) to the spacebar and it WORKS, but it's not right to have to do it this way.
