Blurry widgets on Nokia N8

Hi, I'm having issues with some of the widgets on the N8. For some reason, widgets that require permission to access phone data, after refreshing, will becoming blurry. For example, after the Nokia Battery Monitor and the Accuweather widget refresh, they become blurry. Anyone else experiencing this? I just experienced this after having the phone for over 3 months now. Right before this happened, I did happen to use F-secure app and turned on remote lock within the security settings on the N8. Not sure how to fix this; I have already tried uninstalling the widgets, uninstalling F-secure, reverting back to my original security settings, and soft resetting the phone. This problem doesn't hinder the display of the information from the widgets, but it is a slight annoyance since for some reason the widgets become blurred out a little and are off-center as well (shifted slightly down and right from the usual position).

Do you have Handy Weather widget? It's known for causing problems on the homescreen.

You can try MeteoNews from Ovi Store (free, but it doesn't update automatically, you have to tap on the widget everytime).

  • I have a Nokia N97. I'm looking for a smartphone that is Blue tick approved for reception in rural Australia, which means only Telstra Next G. I would appreciate hearing about any smart phone with gd rural reception, and esp new versions of Android

There are reports of some 3G, or NextG ph's without a blue tick, with as good a reception as the blue ticks. This may include iphone, HTC Desire, and a new to Telstra shop Motorola Defy, that has a blue tick. Telstra staff are not able to give any information re upcoming models of smart phone + good rural reception

I was just having a look back at this post on the Q + A Session and had two thoughts:
    - Did Nokia ever address the questions that they deferred by saying they will get back to them later?
    - On Q9 the answer from the engineers that it was not an easy task to get Virtual RAM is a cop-out.
They admitted that the c: drive has memory paging and that this make apps run faster and smoother. That implies that apps installed on the mass memory won't run as fast or smoothly. I suspect that a lot of problems with apps are caused by being installed on the mass memory.
So where does that leave N97 owners, Nokia are very unlikely (like a snowballs chance in...) to recall N97s to have more memory fitted, so it goes without saying that Nokia should work on Virtual RAM from the Mass Memory as long as this can be accessed as fast as the c: drive (I don't know if this is even technically possible).
The decision to put such a small c: drive on the N97 was a terrible one, especially when you consider the position of this flagship device in relation to Nokia's move towards service with the Ovi Store and the additional overhead of the homescreen with widgets. Nokia all but acknowledged this by increasing the c: drive in the N97 mini. All I can hope is that Nokia have learnt from the bad publicity that this penny pinching exercise has caused and that whoever made the decision has either lost their job or been demoted to the most junior position in the company.

  • E7-00 Transparent widgets

In new software Belle widgets of minicalendar and email cover a half of display. I looking for solution like some transparent widgests with white letters. The same problem is with icons. Probably the best way it is some theme with such settings. Who have the same problem and who see solution?

    @rpiskala
You can't have looked around much not to have been offered a choice of transparent widgets for Nokia Belle. Perhaps look at forum.dailymobile.se although implementation of transparent Email widget is probably outside most user's comfort zone and invalidate any warranty.

  • Social widget is now huge.

Why is it so big now? It takes up nearly half a home screen. I'm using facebook summary now but I have to click on it rather than just glancing at what's going on with the narrow widget info of my friends updates.
If you're happy with the narrow social widget for that reason then don't update, also if you're not into this fat Belle widget thing Nokia seems to have going.
There's a difference between giving us the option to have more home screens to actually forcing us to use them. Nokia, you're winding me up.
With Anna I had one home screen, now I need 3. Less is more.

For me it's rubbish and another annoyingly large widget. I liked Anna for the small neat widgets. I use to run all what I needed off of one home screen, now I need 3.  Why is this better? Like I said, Nokia gave us more home screens because you're forced to use them for the over sized widgets,
I'm not sure if just having one home screen allowed me to save power, but my N8 seems to run out quite quickly. Even when I close down all my apps and so on.

    Hi pziecina,
    Thanks for your reply,
I suspect my problem is the installation or setup of my system or software. as the result i tested is not by doing any scripting at all. All I did is following one of their example exactly (http://www.forum.nokia.com/Tools_Docs_and_Code/Tools/Runtimes/Web_Runtime/Dreamweaver_Exte nsion/QuickStart.xhtml) and package strightaway without modifying the code. because I want to make sure i got the extension install correctly. even so by packaging one of their ready make example already yield this error.

  • N97 V2.1 - Observations

As all the other N97 V2.1 threads seem to have gotten off topic I thought I would start this post for people to add their observations on the new firmware update.
    My observations:
    * RAM - Up to 10 MB more free and better RAM management, unfortunately the internet based widgets and Nokia messaging still use a lot of RAM which I suspect has a negative effect on the stability of the device (shame that Nokia didn't put 256MB RAM in the device as it's not living up to the Nokia marketing of the N97 and it's not reasonable to be expected to not use these features).
    * Widget UI - The widgets seem to be more stable and refresh properly.
    * Kinetic Scrolling - I still have sticking but it occurs only initially when I navigate down into a folder with a lot of icons (I suspect this has to do with the underpowered CPU, another design fail by Nokia).
    * Web browser - Seems to be more responsive and stable.
    * Photo gallery - Seems to be more responsive but still has a little lag (again probably due to the poor choice of CPU).
    * Music player - Seems to be better but still slow (CPU again).
    * General system - Seems more stable but still slow and I have had to restart the phone three times in 12 hours.
    * Other observations
Menu>Settings>Phone>Application sett. - has a bug that just drops you back to the Menu level.
No option to turn off auto-rotation for phone calls.
Bug with the caller image not being constrained within the proper area.
    Contacts still doesn't exit properly.
No improvement on free space on c: (Nokia should have put at least double the NAND memory in).
    Music player back UI inconsistency.
No virtual keyboard in landscape mode.
Nokia messaging still not properly integrated into the phone.
Useless, unremovable trial apps still included in the firmware (Nokia listen to your customers and get rid of these).
These are just my first observations and I'm sure over time I will notice more things but at the moment I would say that this firmware update is an improvement.
Unfortunately IMHO nothing will overcome the poor design choices in relation to the CPU, RAM & NAND memory. I guess we will just have to live with the major shortcomings of this device but Nokia could definitely make it easier by clearly informing N97 owners about the roadmap for the device.

Updated today and i must say it seems to make the device run alot smoother One thing i noticed though was that when you go into applications it slows down alot though this is probaly due to the amount of stuff i have in there lol. We i can say for the mean time the update is one of the best
have to give it a couple of days i guess and see if it turns bad or not lol

  • Facebook not loading

Hello, I have a Nokia 701. Since I own it I was using the Fb touch widget to sign in facebook. I have downloaded the widget from Nokia store and for months I have not experienced any troubles but recently it stopped working properly - it opens but I can only see 2-3 of the latest post and nothing more. The links are not opening (e.g. photo albums, videos, etc.) and none of the buttons is functioning (add a comment, menu, profile, etc.). I am expecting suggestions for solving the trouble. So far I have uninstalled the widget and reinstalled it by downloading it again from Nokia store, I restarted the phone multiple times but with no success. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Or there is the option to use Opera Mini, but in this case you loose some html5 features (but still better than m.facebook.com).
Hopefully Nokia will bring an updated version of the Belle html browser to handle also the touch.facebook.com website properly.
Anyhow, I think we are closer and closer to change our phones...

  • N8 push email not working.

Hi, just got my new N8 and have set up email to my gmail account.  I'm having some problems with push email.
Going through the email wizard it appears to set up the mailbox as a "Nokia Messaging" account.
I have set the syncronization time to "soonest" however I get no notifications of any emails coming in.  The email client does create a data connection to the server, and I can see my looking at my gmail account that an IMAP connection is made from 67.220.123.* (em.outgoing*.messaging.nokia.com) so all the connections seem to be in place, however there is no notifications getting sent to the email client.
If I change the sync time from "soonest" to "Every 15 mintues" then it seems to work OK, but obviously I'd like it working "soonest".
Anyone have any ideas ?  I presume other folk have got it working OK.
As an aside, when I used Nokia messaging in the past (on my N97mini) you could administer it on the web by logging into email.nokia.com.  The messaging that the N8 uses doesn't seem to give you this feature.  Anyone able to confirm?
    Thanks,
    Ian

After spending hours on the phone with them, the verdict was that YES there is a bug with Gmail and we will have to wait until it is fixed.
Nokia at their best again. Nokia support is abysmal and in many cases non-existent. Take for example a level 2 tech telling me to do a 3 finger reset which then wiped all my Web Video Widgets - which Nokia can't supply - and removed Qt from the phone so I can no longer install or use Ovi Store - which they, too, can't supply.
As to this being a bug with Gmail they are talking nonsense. I have my E71 sitting alongside my N8 and the E71 has always worked flawlessly with Mail for Exchange on my old phone, even my N95. On the other hand, N8 crashes when you reply to emails using MfE and Imap doesn't support push mail. They released this phone without thorough testing to stem the flow of negativity and to please their shareholders. They forgot about the most important link in this chain - us. Without us the company will not last. Period.

  • Email-notification on C7

Hello there, I have a new C7 and configured one email-account (IMAP). I also enabled the email widget and messages are synced once every hour. Under "events" for the notification light, everything is checked (missed calls, new messages, new mails). However, the notification light does not inform me (ie it does not blink) about new mails I have received. It works for SMS and calls, but not emails. In the widget, the new mails are displayed. Can anyone confirm this? What can I do about it? Thanks.

We have the same problem with the N8. Emails are not registered in the notification box, while texts and missed calls are. Unless one hears the tone heralding the email arrival, he is out of luck. Email widgets are impractical if one has more than a couple of email accounts. Who wants to fill his homescreen with six or seven email widgets? nokia's setup is very poorly designed.

  • Mobile version now available via WidSets

    Hi all,
I am happy to tell you that we recently joined forces with the Nokia WidSets team to create a "widget" for Nokia Support Discussions.
With WidSets, you can get your favorite web content straight to your mobile device. WidSets works on over 300 phone models from all manufacturers. Using WidSets is free of charge apart from any data traffic charges by your operator.
The Discussions widget is basically a light, mobile version of Nokia Support Discussions. Although the boards work pretty well with device browsers, the pages can be quite heavy to load and there's a lot of data traffic. The widget only downloads the texts, making the experience very fast and user-friendly on most mobile devices.
The new widget lets you search and read messages posted by Nokia users on this global discussion board, which is available via several Nokia websites around the world. There are almost 250 000 posts in 40 000 different topics, so you won't run out of things to read.
Note that you won't be able to login or make posts, but you can search and read all posts.
The widget was created by utilizing the board software's API interface. This enabled us to create an elaborate and feature-rich widget that aligns very nicely with the online version of the service.
If you haven't yet discovered the fascinating world of WidSets, you can start by visiting
    www.widsets.com
If you already have installed WidSets, just add the Nokia Support Discussions widget from
    http://www.widsets.com/widget/227607834
I wrote all my posts from 2005-2011 as an "Admin" for this community. I still work for Nokia as an external consultant, so my rank in all posts is now "Employee".

    Hi dani2xll,
thanks for that, excellent question. I agree it's not that easy to distinguish between widsets, widgets and gadgets.
The new mobile version of Nokia Support Discussions is indeed based on the java launcher of WidSets.com. The WidSets applications - they're called "widgets" - work on over 300 phone models from all manufacturers. You need to register at WidSets.com before you can add any of the thousands of widgets that are available.
The .wgz applications - apparently they're also called "widgets" - you mentioned are a similar but newer thing. Theyre based on WRT (web run time) technology, which is currently supported by N95, E90, N82 and N78 (N95 and E90 may require the latest sw update for this.) These WRT widgets can be run independently, straight from the device desktop.
And yes, we are certainly looking into the possibility of getting Discussions to work also via a WRT widget on all compatible phones.
(And if it was up to us in the Nokia Support Discussions team, such a widget would naturally be preinstalled in every compatible device )
edit: and with gadgets, I don't mean physical products but applications that run on a Vista or a Mac desktop or Igoogle. Stay tuned - more news about gadgets in the next few days!
