BO XI 3 Creation of SAP universe

Hello,
We have BO Xi R3, we have installed the SAP integration kit both on the server and on a client machine. I have installed Crystal 2008 and through that have been able to write some reports on some SAP tables through the Open SQL drivers provided in the SAP integration kit.
Now what I really want to do is create a universe on an SAP table that could then be used in a Webi report, but I cannot see anywhere that this is possible. The same open sql drivers or source connection options just are not available in the universe designer as they are in Crystal.
Is what I am doing just not possible through Webi/universe designer yet?
The reason I don't want to use Crystal is that I need end users to be able to run adhoc reports on some tables directly in SAP through a nice front end tool like webi. Crystal is far too complex for end users.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

The drivers that the Integration Kit installs for Crystal Reports are not used for universes. There is, however, a driver installed that adds the possibility to create SAP universers with Business Objects Designer.
When you create a new connection in Designer you should see a connection node SAP > SAP Business Warehouse 3.x. Don't worry about the 3.x this node can be used for BW 3.x and BI7

Designer hangs during universe creation against SAP BW

Hi,
We are trying to create OLAP universe against SAP BW 3.5 and we are running into issue wherein the designer just hangs and is not able to create the classes and objects, in most cases we have waited for about 30-35 mins and still it doesn't come back. We tried this for both against an Infocube as well as against BW query.
I have couple of questions regarding the process flow for universe creation against SAP BW,
Does universe stores/extracts any data from BW, like storing LOVs for the hierarchies? I know it does reads the rows, columns, free characterstics etc. in case of BW Query.
The time to create the universe depends on what factors, size of the cube or amount of metadata? The customer is concerned regarding what is the guideline on how much time would this process take when the universe comes back with the classes and objects. If there is any such guideline, what is it?

I had similar problems, setting the "Connection timeout" on the SAP/BW connection within Designer (default 10 minutes) from 10 min. to 60 or 120. ALSO: uncheck the universe limits on "number of rows (5000)" and "query duration (10 min)".
This solved the problem.
The connection timeout which is set directly on the SAP-BW connection in designer seems to be used in a wrong way. The definition of the "close connection after xx minutes" means that the connction should be closed after xx minutes of not being used by any process.
With SAP BW the connection seems to be closed regardless of it's use after the specified time period.

How to restrict Duplicate Customer Creation in SAP

Dear all,
How can we restrict duplicate customer creation in SAP SD.
We are into retail sector, across the store customers are being created by different employees.
in this way for many customers more than one business partner records are being created.
we are looking for a sytem wise functionality to restrict the customer master creation (for Sold to party only) if name1, telephone number and street field values are same, then system has to stop customer creation by giving an error message.
Is there any standard functionality to address these requirement. If so how could we configure it.
Any of you can help us to solve the issue. your solutions and help will be highly appreciated.

- Procedure manually (no SAP) ;
- Use extension SAP (SMOD : SAPMF02D) to check with differents data before recording.
No solution in standard.

Service activity creation in SAP from MSP (Microsoft Project)

Dear All,
As we are planning to integrate SAP & MSP, I have one query regarding service activity creation in SAP from MSP.
In case of service activity in SAP we have to assign respective services also otherwise it does not get saved.So when we transfer service activity from MSP (after maintaining the respective control key in MSP ) how we will manage with all services because we can not define these service in MSP.
Apart from that we have some procurement parameters also like material group, purchasing org, price, outline agreement....we have nothing in MSP for these...so how we will manage with this.....

I agree with you that by flexible field mapping we can do but my concern is that service activity should have services also defined in MSP because when this will come to SAP , it will ask for services & if services are not available then this will fail.

Visual Composer - MDA in SAP universe

Hello all,
OMG released a bunch of standards around model driven architecture (MDA). From my point of view Visual Composer is the tool inside CAF to design solutions according to the MDA philosophy.
But Visual Composer uses its own proprietary standards to save and execute models (GML and XGL). How do Visual Composer supports OMG standards? How do buzzwords like MOF, PIM and XMI match into our SAP universe?
Any documentation around these topics?

It seems anybody has a good and fast answer for my question. So I will try to draft an answer on my one and looking forward for your comments!
From my point of view Visual Composer is a domain specific tool to design process flow and ui of business applications. What we do with VC is (in fact) domain specific modeling (DSM) using a specific modeling language (DSL). VC generates a model for design time (GML) and for run time (XGL). The model transformation is executed by deploying the application.
I think GML defines a platform independent model (PIM) and XGL defines a platform specific model (PSM). GML defines the graphical syntax for our model, too. I suppose it also defines the action semantics.
OMG uses UML as a modeling language based on the meta model MOF. UML and MOF a very generic approaches for modeling. In fact GML serves as a meta model for every instance of an application in VC. Iu2019m quite unsure, if there is an underlying meta model for GML (perhaps in form of a public XML schema?).
Unfortunately I didnu2019t found any documentation about the transformation process GML-XGL. Perhaps SAP adopted the QVT standard for model-2-model transformationsu2026?

Resources for customizing SAP Universe objects with MDX

Hello,
Are there any recommended documents out there that provide a comprehensive resource regarding MDX syntax? We are customizing objects in our SAP Universe using MDX, however the "customizing" chapter in the pdf..."Using SAP BW in Universe Designer" is not that thorough.
Any recommendations?

Ingo...here is an example from one of my team members....
We are able to create simple calculated measures such as:
<EXPRESSION>(@SELECT(path\ObjectA)) + (@SELECT(path\ObjectB))</EXPRESSION>
<EXPRESSION>(@SELECT(path\ObjectA)) - (@SELECT(path\ObjectB))</EXPRESSION>
<EXPRESSION>(@SELECT(path\ObjectA)) * (@SELECT(path\ObjectB))</EXPRESSION>
<EXPRESSION>(@SELECT(path\ObjectA)) / (@SELECT(path\ObjectB))</EXPRESSION>
No problem. Anything more complex than that does not work, e.g.
<EXPRESSION>Sum(YTD(), @SELECT(path\ObjectA))</EXPRESSION>
or even
<EXPRESSION>Sum(@SELECT(path\ObjectA))</EXPRESSION>
gets me an error when I try to include it in a Webi report at query execution time. It gives me an error:
A database error occurred. The database error text is: the MDX query ... failed to execute with error Unknown error. (WIS 10901)
Ideally, I would like to get something like <EXPRESSION>IFF(period = this period, amount, 0)</EXPRESSION> to work. Without this kind of control, either the number of BEx queries, BO connections and universes that will be required will grow to an unmanageable number or Webi reports will become very complex with all kinds of formulas and will not be be suitable for any end user modification. I think that resolving this is critical to having further success with BO implementations on top of EDW.
I am not sure if there is some patch level in EDW that is required or if I should be including some kind of specific date or time characteristic in my queries for this to work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Universe creation against SAP Cubes/Queries with same connection

Hello,
I am creating universe against the connection for SAP BW system, once I have created a connection and selected a cube or query and built a universe on top of it....If I go back and create a new universe and this time change the connection to point towards a new cube/query the old universe stops working.
Is it a limitation for SAP database where we need to have a new connection setup for each universe...or is there a different way to use same connection pointing towards different cubes/queries for different universes.
Please let me know.

when you build a universe based on the connection and want to use the universe with reports you can not change the underlying connection because then your universe will not work anymore.
You can have multiple universe on a single connection.

CR2008 connectivity issue with BOE Universes(sap and non sap universes)

Hi Experts !!
Recently we tried to build/connect to a Universe in Crystal Reports2008 via 'Make a new connection tab'.
The universes are of SAP BW or non SAP Lying in BOE Servers and we are trying to build reports on them by conncting/utilizing the universes as a database for Crystal Reporting.
Our issue is most of the time we are not able to connect to the Universes and the connectivity blows out by some 'communication Error' thing initially.
While at some other points in time, the connectivity takes us to the Universe and we are able to select few characteristics and key figures from the Universe but the moment we go futher and try to run by pressing 'OK' button it blows out and say' LOGON FAILED'.
Apparantly, it is an connectivity issue with BOE server and from the different blogs it looks like it is a known issue for long.
The proposed issue resolution were like either CR2008 should be SP2 with BOE SP3 or there should be some additional .dll files defined in the paths in case of MSSQL database. None of this applies to us as we are on CR2008 with SP3 and going back to SP2 is probably not a viable option for us, and we are using Oracle as underlying database in this specific case.( i would like to tell you here that we are able to connect to Oracle Database directly though).
We have raised a message with SAP and was just wondering if we do have some solution/workaround already available to this known issue in place please?
