Board performance

I haven't been looking in here in awhile, but today I noticed that just about every forum/thread I click on hangs and fails to load completely. Reloading, sometimes more than once seems to resolve the issue.
Checking the activity window on Safari 2.0.4 (419.3) indicates that at least this - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?...&tstart=0 seems to be one of the culprits as it fails to load (hangs with a question mark after managing to report a few kb in the status column). Other locations on the page as reported by the activity window seem to load okay until it apparently jams on discussions.apple.com/thread..etc., etc.

I loathe having to post "me too" posts, but I'm curious to know what exactly's going on. The frequency of these technical issues in the past few days is beginning to worry me.
Oh, all the needless load times... all those unanswered questions starved of attention. It's an obsessive-compulsive's worst nightmare.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini 1.5 Solo?

I bought a used Mac Mini. It is a 2006 I believe. It is a 1.5 Solo Core Intel. 2GB RAM. 60GB HDD.
I bought this for my kids, and wanted to wipe the drive and do a fresh install to ensure there would be no unexpected material to arise from a previous owner. I was given a Snow Leopard MAC OS X V10.6.3 Retail disk with the Mini. By starting from the install disk, I was able to wipe the drive. I did a simple zero data erase. Went smooth. I then started the install of SL. Chose language. Agreed to terms. Chose drive to install on. Told me it had 42 minutes to install. It then went to an error screen telling me the installation failed. Restart and try again. I have been through multiple attenpts at this.
I then decide to try my Leopard MAC OS X v10.5.4 Family Pack install disk that I have. I go through the same process to get an error telling me it could not install "essentials" and that I need to contact the manufacturer of the software.
Just out of morbid curiousity, I decided to put my SL disk in and give it one more try. Now when I get to the selct a disk to install on, it tells me there is a recoverable OS from a previous install that can be restored. Click customize to change install or click continue to recover the previous install. I got to 35 minutes and received the error screen. I have been thoughtful enough to include a picture of the error message I received.
It seems I have hit a wall. I am a mac guy. iPhone 4 / iPhone 5 / Mac G4 PPC Dual 1Ghz 2GB RAM / MacBook Pro 13" 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM / now this Mac Mini 1.5Ghz Solo Core 2GB RAM and a few others I have sold off over the years. I love them. Always have. But I cannot lie. I am ready to throw this Mini through a wall.
    Am I missing something here?

There is no reliable way to test RAM short of a dedicated tester. There are software RAM testers that you can try - TechToolPro can do RAM tests:
    http://www.micromat.com/techtoolpro
    or you can try Rember/memtest:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember
but they can often find only the most obvious problems, and if there is such a problem it usually prevents the RAM test from running at all. It's worth trying, though, as it may turn up useful information.
As to the logic board, TechToolPro can do some testing there as well, and authorized Apple service centers have additional tools. There is no single "tell tale sign" of a logic board problem since, given the many different functions the logic board performs, there can be many different symptoms.
If things work properly with an external drive but not with an internal drive, I'd guess a problem with the SATA controller chain on the logic board, but that's just a guess. But if that is the case, then a logic board replacement will be necessary, and as you say that's probably not worth it for a Core Solo mini.
    Regards.

  • Selecting from a SQL Server 2005 with long column names ( 30 chars)

    Hi,
I was able to set up a db link from Oracle 11.2.0.1 to SQL Server 2005 using DG4ODBC.
My problem is that some column names in the Sql Server are longer than 30 chars and trying to select them gives me the ORA-00972: identifier is too long error.
If I omit these columns the select succeeds.
I know I can create a view in the sql server and query it instead of the original table, but I was wondering if there's a way to overcome it with sql.
    My select looks like this:
    select "good_column_name" from sometable@sqlserver_dblink -- this works
    select "good_column_name","very_long_column_name>30 chars" from sometable@sqlserver_dblink -- ORA-00972Thanks

I tried creating a view with shorter column names but selecting from the view still returns an error.

  • What exactly is RAID and it's advantages?

    Hi,
I've been hearing a lot about setting up Mac Pros/G5's in a "Raid" configuration for better performence an i was wondering what it's all about and how to do it?

Basically speaking, RAID offered by Mac OS X (Disk Utility) has three distinct, functions…
    1) Large drive sizes. It enables the combination of multiple drives into one large drive. So, if you have 3 x 500GB drive you can combine them into one large 1.5TB drive. This is implemented under a RAID 0 (striping or concatenating) scheme.
    2) Redundancy. By mirroring two or more drives it is possible to have all but one drive sumulaneously fail and still maintain data operation and integrity. So, if you had 3 x 500GB mirrored drives (resulting in a single 500GB drive) all would be identical giving you in effect, 3 original drives. If one or two of those drives failed the reminaing drive(s) would remain in operation. This is implemented under a RAID 1 scheme.
    3) I/O performance gains. By having your data spread over multiple drives each of those drives are able to read and write to those drive independently and concurrently. So, if you had 2 x 500GB drives under a RAID 0 (stripe only - concatenating provides no I/O improvements) half of your data will be on the first drive and the other half on the 2nd drive. For a 100GB file each drive would have 50GB of that file. When it came time to read that file each drive would simultaneously give the 50GB piece it had which would essentially halve read time and the same would apply to the writing of that 100GB file as each drive would only have to write half of the file.
Under a RAID 1 (mirroring) scheme read speeds would be likewise be improved as you have multiple drives to read from whereas write speed would not change as the same data needs to be written to all drives.
Please be aware that I/O is not actually improved in multiples as it suggests as there are overheads that are incurred by the RAID controller in managing the RAID implementation. Additionally, under Mac OS X the controller is software based rather than hardware based so there are performance losses there as well. It is possible however that the Mac Pro does have a hardware RAID controller which is implemented as part of the Intel 5000X chipset and Disk Utilty only controls it. Someone who knows more about the Intel 5000X chipset might want to confirm or deny this.
While you do get across the board performance gains they are minimal, if anything, at best when booting due to large amounts of very small I/O operations. RAID does do best with large file I/O operations.
    <HR width="50%" />
Many RAID implementation are in fact a combination of RAID 0 and 1 to combine their effects. So, what you could do with 4 identical 500GB is to create two RAID 1 mirrored pairs, leaving you with 2 x 500GB disks, and then create a RAID 0 stripe those two resulting disks into a single 1TB disk. By doing this you in effect get the redundancy for each member in the stripe and also the combined I/O performance (2x write and 4x read) gains. This particular implementation is a RAID 10 (or 1 + 0) scheme.
To provide the most optimal RAID implementations is it highly suggested that all drives are the same size, make and model. Additionally, due to the negative effects of RAID, which I'll get into, it is even more highly suggested that you opt for an entrerprise/nearline class drive with higher reliability and lower failure rates. Enterprise class drives are design for high use and RAID implementations. Yes they are more expensive, though often not excessively so, and are sometimes smaller than their consumer/desktop class bretheren but are well worth the difference.
So what the downside? The largest downside is with RAID 0 striping. With each member/drive you add to a stripe set you add to the likelihood of a catastrophic failure. For instance, if you had a 4 drive RAID 0 stripe the possibilty of a drive failure is 4x that of a single drive. Additionally, if a single drive fails all data is lost as that one drive has a quarter of each file on your system. Now you can see why enterprise class drives are recommended!
Even if you implemented redundancy through a combined RAID 1 scheme, if there were damage to what was written to disk then all disks are damaged. Remember, with mirroring, what is written to one is written to all drives. RAID 1 really only protects you drive a hardware failure, not a software failure.
This does sound bad doesn't it. Just remember to keep it in perspective… a failure under RAID is more likely but that does not make it imminent. With a 4 drive stripe and an enterprise class drive with a 1 million hour MTBF that still gives an overall 250,000 hour MTBF. The likelihood of a single failure is still extremely low.
When you implement RAID schemes how you safeguard your data via clones and backups becomes more of an important issue. Bear in mind that not safeguarding your data with or without RAID is not a wise thing so if you are doing the right thing there's is really nothing extra to do with RAID.
I clone every day or two and backup weekly. Even without RAID, if I didn't do this a hardware failure would result in data loss so RAID isn't particularly worse than an independent drive setup.
    <HR width="50%" />
Would I recommend it. To some yes and others no. It really comes down to how you use your Mac Pro. My suggestion that if you have the drives and the time just give it a go and see how it feels.

  • ActiveX 3D Graphs slowing down loop

I have a rather large VI to record data from 4 USB DAQ boards, perform
kinematic calculation on the data, and plot real time 3D graphs of the
system.  I need the program to run at 30 hertz and this is done
except when the graphs are displayed on the screen.  If I move to
a section of the VI that doesn't have any graphs, it runs fine.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

PPLLC a écrit: According to this thread: Tips for tweaking graphics hardware acceleration of Mesa & the mesa.dll implementation on Win32 plat... using the property node will not help because the foundation of the ActiveX graphics in LabVIEW, Mesa, does not support hardware acceleration on Win32.
Playing with the 3D graph shows clearly that hardware acceleration is indeed supported (although partially only : try with the attached vi and use the window task manager to look at processor use). This does not means that the plot can be updated at a rate compatible with the above 30 Hz exigences, but that once created, it can be manipulated without overloading the central processor. In LV 8.2 the 3D picture control can make full usage of harware acceleration but lacks the tools to create graph scales.
As proposed by PPLLC in his first reply, the best solution is to use separate loops for data acquisition and display, exchanging data using a queue.

  • Adding a floppy drive

Is it possible to use the floppy drive scavenged from my old (dead video board) Performa 6115 in my 933mhz G4 workstation?
Any chance it's plug and play?
I have a box of floppies and I'd like to move their data to cd without having to buy something I won't need when I'm through!
    Thanks,
    Gary

    Thanks Grant.
I guess maybe I can buy a used USB floppy off of EBAY and then resell it when I am through with my archiving.
As for the 6115, the video went out some years back - after a near-miss, lightning strike. The guy at the mac repair place said the video board was dead. That being said ... it wouldn't cost me anything to try another battery in it.
I also have IIsi that works from floppy but won't see any hard drives. I suspect it lost it's SCSI hardware.
Yes ... I have problems "letting go" .

  • Apple Replacement policy

Could anybody tell me what Apple's replacement policy is when you have a PB which has had multiple repairs ?
How serious do the repairs have to be before Apple will consider just replacing the unit ?

Contact AppleCare. They should be able to give you
    an honest answer.
No question that they should, no guarantee that they can or will. Keep in mind that Applecare reps are restricted by their administrative policy directives. Also be aware that class action looms.
There seems, however, to be a de-facto acknowledgment by Apple that fatal flaws exist within the original AND replacement logic boards available within certain range of serial numbered 15" PowerBooks.
After the second logic board failure, and a HD replacement, Apple is replacing my PowerBook, which lies within the serial# range of their extension program, with a Pro Book of comparable configuration.
My PB was just over 1 yr. old when the first failure occurred, normally performed for a few days after repair, then resumed the previous symptoms of memory drop out, intermittent booting failure, etc.
As one peruses these discussions, there are a host of issues that directly relate to logic board performance on a wide range of Books, and it seems Apple has no viable hardware remedy. The replacements are apparently as fault prone as the original. For those out of warranty it's salt in the wound.
I'm now aware of logic board issues with the Pro Book as well, so there's no guarantee that future performance of that model will be more reliable, time will tell.
It's beyond unfortunate, inconvenient, and costly to everyone affected to have system failures so ill understood by Apple, and if understood, so narrowly acknowledged. For a company that promotes itself as above the norm, it's credibility is seriously threatened by it's apparent limited sense of honesty and responsibility to it's customer base, or for that matter it's investors.
Anyone experiencing repetitive failure related to logic boards should not have to be subjected to stonewalling by Apple for a suitable replacement, nor be misdirected to a course of time consuming repairs that are known by them to be futile, by reason of the benefit economics of deferral .
If you have experienced multiple failures of logic board related function, either be resigned to live with it's likelihood of becoming a lifestyle, or resolve to press Apple for the appropriate replacement.

  • Asus A7N8X Del. or MSI K7N2G-IL?

Reviews praise both mobos and give them (on average) a score of 9/10.  Benchmarks show that both boards perform on par with one another (sometimes one board will perform slightly better than the other board and vice versa).
Reviews also show that both boards are good overclockers but do not go into specifics.  Do any of these boards have a PCI lock for overclocking the processor FSB?
Is there any reason for purchasing one board over the other, or should I purchase the board with the cheapest price?

In reference to Grog's post I don't know that I would go with his recommendation either way yet...he's got his friend doing testing on his components still and from what I read it looks like his processor is faulty or that he got a bad MB out of the box...both of those failures, while really frustrating to the typical consumer because of lack of extra parts for troubleshooting, can happen to anyone. The K7N2 boards are decent boards with lots of features packed into them. They are VERY picky about memory that you can use in them. They have exhibited issues with ATI based video cards, Sapphire in particular and IMHO it's an initialization issue at bootup.
I just got back from a month vacation and I'm not up to par with current BIOS releases that were done while I was gone, if any, so I can't say if the temp issues still exist or not. The boards were reading over by 10C then under by 10C and I'm not sure what they're reading to date with whatever recent BIOS that's been released as I said.
Overall those folks that have the boards working and setup properly seem to be quite happy with them...there are a few that have issues still such as the AGP 8X issue. Seemingly there is a fix in the UK for it but you have to send it back to MSI UK Tech Support to have it repaired...
My ASUS board has been rock solid forever now but I do miss some of the -ILSR frills that aren't included on this board that I have...I do like it's stability alot and am happily enjoying gaming on it. I play SWG, MOHAA, Splinter Cell, DoD, BF1942, EQ as well as others and haven't had a glitch in the bunch once I get each game's settings set properly. Overall I'm happy with this board.
It's really a crapshoot and personal preference IMHO. You may have great results with either or bad results as well...it really all depends on what components you use in the system and how they play in the sandbox with each other...
    That's my take on it...

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01867418&cc=us&destPage=document&lc=en&tmp_docn...
    I have two questions:
    1)    HP Recovery Manager is not on my ProBook 4530s. Is it available for this laptop?
    2)    How can I do a "no-format non-destructive reinstall"  of win 7 64bit on my ProBook 4530s - (using Recovery Manager if possible?) -  i.e. reinstall without formatting, loosing data or settings ?
If HP Recovery Manager is not available to my ProBook 4530s, then I wonder if the link below is a preferable way to do a no-format non-destructive reinstall - or is there a risk, that it will hamper some HP-installations or settings?

  • FX5900Nu: msi x gainward x Bios and why ppl flash their cards.

I have a gainward fx5900 1100 400/700 2.8ns 128 and I cut off some board tracks testing water cooling fittings (more like drunk friend nests board on top of cutting tools).
Anyway, it's the simplest fx5900Nu model from gainward.
I had to finish the tests with the cooler, so I went out and bought a "MSI SUPERIOR PRODUCT fx5900sp vdt256".
I also have an old MSIti4600 4x and its a totally awsome board, so I though the SP would be great too. It's also has similar clock/mem specs 2.8 as the gainward, exept for the memory size. Before bothering to dismantle the huge cooler from the Msi I ran tests so I could compare both boards "stock cooled".
I tested both with 56.55 and these are my "results":
With the gainward I was able to IN AN EASY WAY to find ZILLIONS OF BIOS FILES, and they are nice ppl too, they write a little bat file so all u have to do to flash the bios is SIMPLY type : flash -> enter and it's done . If you try to flash to a diferent model they prompt you to confirm..DoNe...u dont have to D.O.S. your way into Nvflash wich is also a dread to less experienced users. (I wont even mention my feelings about Msi's "live update" feature)
Boot a floppy, type "flash", Boot.
30 seconds later I'm back into windows with the new bios.
I flashed 2 5950U , 2 5900U and FIVE 5900Nu bios files thus finding the best set for my card (one of the 5 5900nu testeds) increasing the card's performance at least 20~30% default AND overclocked.
    Getting scores like 55k Aniso off/50k Aniso on  Aquamark, 6,8k Fm2k3 , 19k 3dm2001se...etc just from changing bios was great, that stock cooled with Agp4x on a 533 p4 3.06 @ 3.6 512 + rambus 1250mhz almost 2 year old setup.
Similar performance with temperature drops were obtained using both 5950 roms, but overall 2 of the bios writen for Nu's were absolutely perfect.
I could EASILY take it from the original 400/700 to 510/970 benching @ 507/960 without artifacts and rock solid, even with the crappy stock aluminum cooler (wich is the reason for the watercooler, that board DESERVES a Watercooling kit.).
    Msi Superior Product:
Now I just finished "testing" the Msi's SP :
    - Could not raise the memory past 820 without artifacts and didn't even test that for too long.
    - The core would quit @ 470~480, even with the bios flashed @ 5950 and now i can't even use that bios becose the memory (go back to default bug) resets to 950 and doesn't even hold long enough to be downed.
    - The scores (@480/850) were ludicrous like 49k in aquamark no Aniso and 42k aniso on...and no, it wasn't performance-drop-for-being-too-overclocked.
I didn't even bothered runing other tests, doom3alpha had terrible locks and bugs (runs fine on the gainward @ maxfps 1024 going to 30 on the heaviest parts against 17 on the Msi)
    - Why is it SO HARD to find Bios for Msi's Vga's????...my guess being becose they (Msi) simply don't make them...they do one or 2 (most likelly 1),  and that's it. No further work is done to improve boards performance even though EVERY Nvidia enthusiast aways expect driver AND bios optimizations and improvements FREQUENTLY, and I think it's a real shame...Msi is falling behind while other companies are employing more resources into fine tunning and improving their current range of cards.
The reason of this post is that, as it never crossed my mind it would be hard to find Msi bios files, I never backed the original one and I need it urgently so I can flash the right bios for the Fx5900VTD256 and return the card with it's original features.
After reading about 20 posts begging for various bios (the ones asking for my model had no answers) and pll saying flat out " Why you wanna change your bios?? It's meaningless, not needed etc.." I decided to post these words on my experience on flashing bios, especially after the Dx9 paranoia and I mean..we all flash mobo's bios frequently...
Good bios files and good drivers are a card's soul, I do not care for extra Cd's and stuff I won't even take out off the box.
I care about good performance and hard working on tunning/feedback/updating and I aways thought since Msi had resources to give heaps of cd freebies (and I apreciate that too) it was becose it had the "tunning/updating" part covered.
I also would like to sugest that the all Bios files avaiable for all boards should be made publically avaiable, even if it hurts Msi's image for having less files than other manufactures. As consumers/enthusiasts we deserve to have easy access to all that can be used to improve our cards.
I apologise for my bad english, I'm from Brazil and I hope my post is constructive and sparks an effort on Msi towards improvement on the issues mentioned.
Other interesting fact I'd like to mention is thar Msi's SP has a HUGE cooling solution, on both sides, 1 fan each side for the aditional memory while Gainward's collers and sinks are basically aluminium "full cheapo mode" on, so I find it amazing that the Gainward card is so superior in performance.
So if some kind soul could post the Bios file for the FX5900SP VTD256 I'd aprecciate very much, I couldn't find it anywere in the web and tried the forum search too, but requests for the file haven't been answered and I really need this file so I can return the card as soon as possible or if there is more than one bios for this board I'd like to see if there is significant improvement. Both ones I tested (original and 5950) are plain very slow.
    regards

I downloaded this App for ringtones (Ringtones 500.000) , purchased a full version of it, so I should be able to download unlimited number of ringtones. The problem is, it won't let me download any ringtones after 10, which is how free version of this App performs.

I would like to get $1.99 back instead of troubleshoot this any longer, because it seems App help support people are not understanding the problem.
I did try re-loading the App -didn't help either.

I want to use the system restore disks that came with my iBook when I originally purchased it. Is this possible since I have had my logic board replaced?

The simplest way to reinstall iPhoto and iMovie is to download Pacifist and then extract the relevant applications from the Software Restore Discs.
Pacifist comes with instructions; this is not a difficult operation and there is no need for erase & install to recover the applications.
Pacifist is Shareware, but you need not pay the fee in order to use it. Every time that you open Pacifist you will be prompted to purchase a licence. If you feel that Pacifist is worth the money (and I think that it is), you can purchase a licence at any stage.
If you're a plonker like me, then purchasing a licence will provide justification for third party developers like CharlesSoft to save the day for the rest of us.
    Good luck!

  • I am using a DAQ board to get the singnal now i need to perform frequency analysis and this system doesn't employ any filters etc it's just a signal

Iam using AT-MIO-16E-2 board to retrieve the signal now i need to perfrom a frequency analysis and this process doesn't employ any filters etc.

There are a lot of shipping examples that you can look at. They're under Analyzing and Processing Signals>Signal Processing. There are software filters and window functions that you can use but if you are having aliasing problems, then the only thing you can do is add hardware filtering.

  • Does the logic board affect battery performance?

Anyone know of any issues at all?
    Cheers

Yeah sorry. It's just that i had my macbook pro repaired due to a faulty logic board. It's a known problem and covered by Apple, so the repair was free. Since it's come back the battery is not working properly. Never had a problem before with it. I suspect that that they've given me someone else's duff battery. However, I'm investigating the possibility that the battery is fine and it's a faulty logic board that is causing the power problems. The battery used to tell me at about 10% to plug in my power cord, and even when i didn't it just went to sleep - as in after getting a dose of power all the programs were open that i was using etc. Now it shuts down at about 35% power.
Does anyone know if the logic board repair could be causing the problem?
    Cheers
