Board rated wattage running a cpu at the upper limit

Whether it be Athlon II's or Phenom II's for AM3 MSI board ( have the MSI i 880gm-e41  )
the lower end of running temp availability of cpus for purchase is 95w.  Earlier I saw where the advice was to not run 125 w. etc cpus above the board's recommended value.
My question is:  Is running at the 95w maximum a danger of burning out the boards parts (regardless of air cooling)  on 24/7 operation going to burn out a board?
The only 45w or 65 w cpus seems to be only available as "refurbished" pulls.  That,  or way high priced.

I have not visited this thread in some time.
Henry, regarding price;  I can look for deals b/c all my stuff still works.  But my onboard video (which is all I ever use) may be failing on the Biostar board with a Sempron which will be replaced by the MSI board under discussion above.  It's still in the box and I bought some DDR3 memory a while back and still waiting assembly.
On reconsideration, no "pulls" for me even if I have to settle for a Regor (Athlon II x2) which will still be a major upgrade for this computer which runs 24/7 on a home network and takes nearly all the load of the connection.
When you say do not exceed a 89 w cpu that sort of leaves out any of the current generation of 95 watters.  And with current stock it limits the choice to Athlon II x2's rather than any threes at all.
I notice temperature climbs when trying to burn a cd copy while other operations are going.  It looks like I have to settle on the Rana.  My planned order date is next week and hoping for a closeout on the buying season sales but that prospect looks dim.
CPUs are not going on deal at all.  And the 45 watters and so on are unavailable due to lack of supply.
My question is for the future:  What MSI products will support higher wattages?
Any other advice you might have for the current build which is not assembled yet?

  • Dynamically set the upper limit of a numerical control

I want to dynamically setting the upper limit of a numerical control. The maximal value that is allowed to input is calculated by the code, so that if the value input by the user exceeds the upperlimit,  a warning comes out and the input value is automaticaly reset to zero.
I wired the calculated upper-limit to the property node of the numerical control using ''Data Range > Maximum" property, but it does not work as I expected.
Anyone has suggestion on this? Thanks a lot.

    Can you attach your code?

I cannot read your mind. What do you expect? What to you see instead?
Overall, you are in a catch22 scenario if I understand you right. If you set the max of the control to coerce to a certain value and you enter a larger value, it will be coerced to the upper limit and the code does not see the original out-of-range value and you cannot successfully test it with a comparison operation. Maybe you can set it to "ignore" instead of "coerce" or not even set an upper limit. Simply use "in range and coerce" and reset the value under the desired conditions (e.g. via  a local variable) before handing it to the rest of the code. You could even wrap this into an xcontrol.

  • After updating firefox I can not open the shortcut browser icon, but can open IE, and my whole system seems to be slow. solution please? Now when I open firefox the task manager says the process firefox is running 100% CPU in the background

Updated firefox to latest version with custom install, no task bar or startup (in past I think I usually included startup) late Friday nite. Then when trying to open Firefox shortcut on desktop Sat. could not, would freeze up. Then if I tried to open IE same would happen. After rebooting a # of times, opened IE 1st and worked but still could not open Mozilla within IE or the desktop. Also all our 3 wireless laptops including apple have no problem with this.

You said you tried the recommended solution, but didn't mention what that solution was. Try, from the Firefox menu bar:

    Hi All,
I understand, Microsoft file sync provider metadata file is nothing but a Microsoft CE database, which cannot grow beyond 4GB. I also came to know that this metadata file is nothing but entries (aka details) of the files in the file system.
Does anyone know, how many entries would this knowledge file could contain considering only file additions ? (forget about updations and deletion tracking).

  • What is the significance of Safety Upper Limit and Lower Limit

    Hello Experts,
I was trying to create a generic datasouce in rso2 , while setting the delta specific field I have selected date field and I need to know the significance of other two input fields provided over there:
    Safety Interval Upper Limit.
    Safety Interval Lower Limit.
and check box Real Time Enable.
    Thanks,
    Vijay

    Hi Vijay
Safety Interval Upper Limit of Delta Selection This field is used by DataSources that determine their delta generically using a repetitively-increasing field in the extract structure. The field contains the discrepancy between the current maximum when the delta or delta init extraction took place and the data that has actually been read. Leaving the value blank increases the risk that the system could not extract records arising during extraction. Example: A time stamp is used to determine the delta. The time stamp that was last read is 12:00:00. The next delta extraction begins at 12:30:00. In this case, the selection interval is 12:00:00 to 12:30:00. At the end of extraction, the pointer is set to 12:30:00. A record - for example, a document- is created at 12:25 but not saved until 12:35. It is not contained in the extracted data but, because of its time stamp, is not extracted the next time either. For this reason, the safety margin between read and transferred data must always be larger than the maximum length of time that it takes to create a record for this DataSource (with a time stamp delta), or it must display an interval that is sufficiently large (for determining delta using a serial number). Safety Interval Lower Limit This field contains the value taken from the highest value of the previous delta extraction to determine the lowest value of the time stamp for the next delta extraction. For example: A time stamp is used to determine a delta. The extracted data is master data: The system only transfers after-images that overwrite the status in the BW. Therefore, a record can be extracted into the BW for such data without any problems. Taking this into account, the current time stamp can always be used as the upper limit when extracting: The lower limit of the next extraction is not seamlessly joined to the upper limit of the last extraction. Instead, its value is the same as this upper limit minus a safety margin. This safety margin needs to be big enough to contain all values in the extraction which already had a time stamp when the last extraction was carried out but which were not read. Not surprisingly, records can be transferred twice. However, for the reasons above, this is unavoidable. these are used to determining the delta in a datasource: 1. Time stamp - The field is a DEC15 field which always contains the time stamp of the last change to a record in the local time format. 2. Calendar day - The field is a DATS8 field which always contains the day of the last change. 3. Numerical pointer - The field contains another numerical pointer that appears with each new record .

    2.
You can determine the upper limit of the time. To do this, you specify a time period relative to the current date. The time unit for the time period can be specified in days, weeks, months, quarters, years, posting periods, or fiscal years.
The upper limit can also be rounded down to the end of a time period by selecting another, additional time unit, so that, for example, only complete months or years can be archived when a date field is selected as a selection characteristic for the time slice. The time slice defined in this way contains the complete time period before the upper limit calculated.
    1. If delta field is Date (Record Create Date or change date), then use Upper Limit of 1 day.
This will load Delta in BW as of yesterday. Leave Lower limit blank.
    2. If delta field is Time Stamp, then use Upper Limit of equal to 1800 Seconds (30 minutes).
This will load Delta in BW as of 30 minutes old. Leave Lower limit blank.
    3. If delta field is a Numeric Pointer i.e. generated record # like in GLPCA table, then use
Lower Limit. Use count 10-100. Leave upper limit blank. If value 10 is used then last 10
records will be loaded again. If a record is created when load was running, those records
may get lost. To prevent this situation, lower limit can be used to backup the starting
    sequence number. This may result in some records being processed more than once;
therefore, be sure this DataSources is only feeding an ODS Object
    Hope this will help you

After replacing the upper CPU on a Power Mac G5 (June 2004), Dual 1.8Ghz PowerPC, model M9454LL/A, all the cooling fans constantly run at full speed. All other operations are normal.
I've read, "...after replacing or switching CPU locations the Logic Board doesn't properly recognize the CPU's in their new location and a "Thermal Calibration" is needed". Could a "Thermal Calibration" possibly correct the constant full fan speed issue?

Once it opens, type in the following command...
    netsh winsock reset
    hit enter
You should get a message that the winsock reset successful and you will need to reboot your computer.
Reboot and when I reloaded itunes the store loaded fine.

  • Could threads of a same process run on different CPU in the same time ?

    Hello,
probably stupid question..., but I would like to understand if several threads inside a same process can run in the same time on separate CPU.
If the response is positive, how can I bind a thread on differant CPU using C API ?
Also what is the algorithm implemented by Solaris for the laod balancing ?
Is there any white paper on this subject ?
    Thanks for any tips

Threads in the same process can run at the same time on separate CPUs.
You can bind a thread to a CPU using the processor_bind(2) API.
That algorithm is not public. You will have to wait for OpenSolaris so that you can look at the implementation at that time.
There is much public documentation on Solaris threading support on the web. Use google. The following document provides a good historical context of Solaris thread support.

  • Svchost.exe taking up almost all of my cpu after the computer has been running for a number of hours

My computer is almost a year old and it is a custom build gaming rig with the following specs
    Intel Core i5-3570k CPU @ 3.40GHz
    8.0GB of Ram
    AMD Radeon HD 6870
    running windows 8.1
The issue is that after a few hours my computer starts to drastically drop in performance. This is due to two reasons. Firstly explore.exe starts to use up my cpu. I can easily stop this by using process explorer to close the offending thread (only 1 thread
i causing the issue, the rest are using minimal cpu) killing this thread reduces the cpu and appears to have no concequence in terms of functionality of my pc.
After this on average ten minutes later what happen is that svchost.exe starts using from 40%-60% of my cpu at which point if I do not quit any game I am playing my computer will crash. using process explorer to find the offending threads lead me to a thread
with a TID of 1836. If I kill this process I lose internet connection. Yet before this happens there is no sign of this thread. It appears to not be present until the issue appears and when it does appear this process is essential to my internet connection.

  • A Simple Working CPU for the Nexys4 Board

After lots of learning and some great feedback from this forum, I have finally got my microcoded CPU design working on my Nexys4 DDR board. Here is a link to the project.
This would be a good introductory project for new users, as the CPU is nice and simple, there's a web page describing how it works, and there isn't much VHDL code to look at. Also, I have managed to put all the board-specific code into one VHDL file. It should not be much work to port the code to other FPGA boards.
Anyway, thanks again for the feedback that I received here.
    Cheers, Warren

The rub is that most binaries are compiled using SSE, and that instruction set is missing on Galileo. On the other hand, most binaries compiled without requiring SSE use very, very old Windows APIs that are not going to be supported on Windows on Galileo.
So pretty much, you'll need to at least recompile everything.
However, if you can find driver source for this video camera, you may be able to compile it for Galileo. It's worth a shot!

  • MacBook runs extremely hot when the battery is in!

To start off... I'm a quite savvy user. I've built PC desktops, I repair computers for friends and family, and I'm interning at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. However, I'm having an issue that is totally stumping me. I recently took my MacBook apart to clean it and apply some Arctic Silver 5 to the CPU and Northbridge. All went well, and without the battery in, my CPU temperature maxes out at 155 Fahrenheit (versus the previous max of 185). When I put the battery in (with CPU load at 100%), the CPU temperature jumps from between 145-155 to 200 very quickly. I checked the connection of the battery cable to the logic board, as well as all the other cables on the easily accessible side of the logic board. I triple checked all the cable connections on the underside of the logic board since I didn't want to have to take it out again. Any ideas as to why my system runs so hot with the battery in?

Hmm, I never knew that, and thanks for the quick reply! I guess I'll be taking the logic board back out and checking the heatsink and thermal paste application again. It was interesting, one of the screws in my heatsink was totally smooth; never threaded in the factory. I had to order a whole new set of heatsink screws. Perhaps the threading on the logic board itself is off and not letting the heatsink sit flush? That screw did give me some difficulty getting in.

  • HP xw8600 workstation fans run at max all the time after upgrading CPUs and memory

Hello, This is my 1st post on the forums here so I would like to thank everyone for the help ahead of time. I have an HP xw8600 workstation on which I have upgraded the CPUs and RAM recently - after the upgrade the fans seem to spin at full speed all the time (not just under load). Before the upgrading the fans were barely heard but afterwords the workstation has become very loud. This seems odd that the fans always run fast now and seems like this is not "normal" - what needs to be done to allow the fans to again be modulated by load/temp settings as designed? I looked in the temp and fan RPM settings in the BIOS and it looks like all sensors are working (including ambient temp sensor - was stating around 20 deg. C). Hardware changes:Before - CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5460/ 3.16 GHz, 12MB L2, 1333 MHz, FSB,120WRAM: HP 32GB (16x2GB) DDR2-667 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser After -CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5492/ 3.40 GHz, 12MB L2, 1600 MHz, FSB,150WRAM: HP 32GB (8x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser NOTE: From the HP spec sheet it says that 32GB(8x4GB) is not supported by 5492... I am not sure why this is so and do not know if this has anything to do with my fans running very fast. HP 32GB(8x4GB)DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM RISER Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 HP 64GB (16x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 and 5492.
Acoustics waiver required. Other than the constantly loud fans the workstation works perfectly with the new setup. Please let me know if anyone has run into this issue with the fast fans and whether there is a fix for this (maybe flashing BIOS?). Any advice is greatly appreciated! [I originally posted this under Desktops section - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/HP-xw8600-workstation-fans-run-at-max-all-the-time-after/td-p/3929746]

The xw8600 has a motherboard firmware setting that if it detects high powered processors in place it wants to see the "double tall" performance heatsink/double fans per heatsink in place.  I have posted about that and how I rewired a double tall to use side by side in my xw8400 next to a single tall heatsink/fan to see how cooling was affected in that workstation. The xw8400 did not ever come with double tall performance heatsinks, to my knowledge, so its motherboard's firmware is different. In those posts I also explained how to do a simple jumper wire modification on a single tall heatsink to spoof the xw8600 into thinking it had a double tall/two fans in place over each processor.  Simple and quick. So, you might want to get a couple of double talls off eBay, or try the jumper wire trick.  I'd personally advise to get the double tall heatsinks given that you're running 150W max TDP processors.  If I remember correctly HP wanted you to use the double talls for 120W max TDP and above.  I'd feel comfortable using that trick on a set of 120 watt processors if I was not hammering them frequently, but it sounds like you're a high level power user. The all-fans-on-high can be due to a failed thermisitor in the front power cable reading ambient air temps too high, but you can check that in BIOS to see the temp and it sounds like yours is not elevated incorrectly.  You can search for my experience with that in a xw6600, and it is an easy $8.00-$12.00 fix with a new cable off eBay.  You'd want the longer version for the xw8600, versus the shorter one for the xw6600. Finally, maybe you've just gone too high in your total wattage use?  Those risers can run hot and draw lots of power.  Could you live with less ram and get rid of the risers using 4GB sticks?  Sometimes those prior prohibitions regarding what is and is not supported go away with later BIOS updates.  Is your BIOS the latest? Welcome, and let us know what turns out to be the problem so others can benefit too. Scott
