Bogging down with large number of photos

I have over 115,000 (give or take a few 1000) photos in iPhoto at present. I primarily use it to organize photos so I can find them, make slideshows, and hope to eventually make photo books - they're our family history for the past 7 years or so. My iPhoto library is about 155 GB.
I'm running this on the iMac - bought a couple of months ago. 4GB RAM with a 1T HD.
My main grumble is that whenever iPhoto is open, my iMac bogs down. I frequently see the spinning wheel, beach ball, or whatever it's called, particularly when I have the iPhoto to the front and it's just starting up... (plus other times).
A local Mac person thought that if I moved to Aperture, it would handle this number of photos much better... I've never much looked at Aperture before, so I'm not sure... About 2+ years ago, I had PCs and used Adobe Photoshop Elements - loved the organizer, and the level of editing power was just about right.... These days, I have next to no time for any editing except the occasional red-eye, but I can enjoy doing it on occasion (mostly swapping out backgrounds, making collages, etc).
What could I do to improve things???

iPhoto is rated for 250,000 images and while you've a way to go just yet that is still a very big library.
With Libraries of that size I would expect a slowness loading or quitting, though not in normal use - viewing, organizing and so on.
You may be able to speed up launching by turning off all automatic syncing - looking for Shared Libraries, Checking with Mobile Me etc in the Preferences.
Aperture is indeed a Professional application, but I would caution that there is less value in it if you're not shooting Raw and that there is a learning curve in using it. You can download a free trial of Aperture [here|http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial>
You can have multiple libraries in iPhoto, however the downside is that you can only have one open at a time.
If you opt to go that way then to create a library: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and use the same keystroke to Choose between Libraries.
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 face recognition slow with large number of photos ( 20,000)

I have a new fast Imac with new Iphoto 9.5.1. I have >20,000 photos. When I use face recognition with people who have >50 photos associated with them, the rolling ball continues for 20-40 seconds. I didn't have this with the same number of photos with my old Imac2009 with Iphoto 9.4.3, 2011.
    Thanks.

That is probably still the initial setup for face recognition for you new iPhoto version.  Once the "Faces" database has been rebuild, the performance  should get better. Give it a day or two.  If the problem persists, back up your iPhoto library and rebuild it.
Hold down the key combination alt/option- command ⌥⌘ firmly and double click the iPhoto library to launch the First Aid Tools. Keep holding down the keys, until you are seeing the First Aid Panel.  Select the entry "Rebuild Database" from the panel and click "Rebuild".

I have a large number of photos imported into iPhoto with the dates wrong.  How can I adjust multiple photos (with varying dates) to the same, correct, date?

If I understand you correctly, when you enter a date in the Adjust Date and Time window, the picture does not update with the date you enter.  If that is the case then something is wrong with iPhoto or your perhaps your library.
How large a date change are you putting in?  iPhoto currently has an issue with date changes beyond about 60 years at a time.  If the difference between the current date on the image and the date you are entering is beyond that range that may explain why this is not working.
If that is not the case:
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: to get to the "home > library" hold down option on the keyboard and click on "Go" > "Library" while in the Finder.
    Let me know the results.

  • Selecting large number of photos

I have recently installed ilife 08. When I am in an event and want to select a large number of photos, I click on the first one and try to scroll down. When I stop scrolling, the screen jumps back to the first photo, making it very hard to select them all. Anyone else encountered this and know why?

Usually I find that when I want new events the photos I want to use are at the end of the event -- if you start up from the bottom until you find the first photo you want in the new event select it and click split -- that photo and all below it will now be in a new untittled event. You can continue on up the event and do this multiple times if needed.
If this does not do it select some of the photos you want in the new event and click new event. This will give you a new event with some photos in it - then go back to the original event and select more photos and cut them then paste them into the new event - repeat as necessary to complete the "move"

  • Problems syncing large number of photos while choosing all photos option

I have 17,800 photos and have experienced problems with trying to sync in iTunes since release day 1.
If I choose to sync using the all photos option, the iPad will reboot during synch and appears to finish. Ipad will become unresponsive and hang with the apple logo on screen and a hard reset will then be required.
Then when trying to launch photo app in iPad it displays "updating library" for a minute or 2 and then photo app crashes back to home screen.
Have tried many options in trying to solve this including restore iPad software, deleting photo cache in iTunes, rebuilding iTunes library, etc.
Only solution I have found was to break down my 17,800 photos into events and choose to synch events instead of the all photos option and that works, getting all 17,800 photos into iPad. Photos take about 5.8 gb of storage.
There is definitely a problem with iTunes here in synching large number of photos using the all photos option and I have reported this to AppleCare support via two support calls. There does not appear to be a awareness of this issue in tech supports knowledge base and I am surprised to that there are not a large number of incidents reported as there are a few discussions started here on the issues of photo sync.
Hopefully this post will help others with the same issue.

Solved problem of synching iPad with desktop containing large photo library (20,000 photos): In summary, solution was to rename, copy and live iPHoto Library to XHD and reduce size of library on home (desktop) drive.
In the home directory, rename "iPhoto Library" to "iPhoto Global" (or any other name you want), and copy into an external hard drive via simple drag and drop method.
Then, go back to the newly renamed iPhoto Global and rename it again, to iPhoto 2010. Now, open iPhoto by holding down the Alt/Option key and opening iPhoto. This provides option to choose library iPhoto 2010. Open the library, and eliminate every photo before 2010. This got us down to a few thousand photos and a much smaller library. Synch this smaller library with the iPad.
Finally, I suggest downloading a program "iPhoto Library Manager" and using this to organize and access the two libraries you now have (which could be 2, 10 or however many different libraries you want to use.) The iPhoto program doesn't want you to naturally have more than one library, but a download called iPhoto Library Manager allows user to segregate libraries for different purposes (eg. personal, work, 2008, 2009, etc.). Google iPhoto Library Manager, download, and look for links to video tutorials which were very helpful.
I did not experience any problems w/ iPhoto sequencing so can't address that concern.
    Good luck!

  • Help in sharing a large number of photos?

I am looking for a reasonably quick way of sharing a large number of photos with other members of my church as well as on other occasions family and friends.
The photos are all loaded onto my iPad at their original resolution and are high quality .jpegs taken with a Nikon DSLR (D7000).
I would prefer to use something "cloud" based rather than a commercial enterprise if possible but don't know how to do it.
Can someone give me some suggestions?  I am a long time PC user and am pretty adept at Windows but a stymied by the Apple system, particularly my inability, seemingly to really delete individual photos without finding them all over again somewhere else on the iPad.  Delete "everywhere" seems not to be quite accurate to describe what happens.
    Thanks for helping me out.

Try sharing it via photostream. It makes a link so people with non iOS devices can view them all you do is forware it to their emails........
heres a link for photstream.  Good luck!
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4379
Follow the steps below to create a shared photo stream. Note that you cannot share all the photos in My Photo Stream at one time. However, you can select images from it to create a shared photo stream.
On your device using iOS 6:
From the Home screen, tap Photos.
Tap the Photo Stream tab. (Note: You can also share images from your Camera Roll or an album in your Camera Roll. Tap the Albums tab, then tap Camera Roll or an Album. Continue with steps 4-7 below.)
Tap My Photo Stream, then tap Edit.
Tap each photo you'd like to add to the shared photo stream. A check mark will appear on selected photos. Tap Share.
Tap Photo Stream. (If this is not your first shared photo stream, you'll need to select New Photo Stream from the Add to a Photo Stream list.)
Enter the email addresses of the people with whom you'd like to share this new photo stream. Type in a name for your photo stream. To share this photo stream on iCloud.com, move the Public Website slider to the ON position. If you will be sharing your stream with someone who does not have an iCloud account, you will need to make the stream public. People without an iCloud account can view the stream in a web browser. Tap Next.
Optionally, you can add a comment for your new stream to introduce it. Tap Post.
To share a Stream with someone who wishes to view it from a web browser, or to post a shared photo stream to Facebook or Twitter:
Find the name of the shared photo stream from your list of photo streams and tap the blue arrow on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Tap Edit on your iPad, then tap the name of the shared photo stream.
    Tap Share Link.
To share with Facebook or Twitter, Tap either Facebook or Twitter, and tap Post.
To send the link in a message or email, tap Message or Email.
You can also opt to tap the Copy a link URL so that you can post it elsewhere.

how can I remove large number of photos on my iPhone 4s from iTunes using a PC - Lenovo Think Pad - so that I can reduce the space used on the phone by 50%?

You don't need iTunes for that. Simply connect the iPhone to the PC where it will be recognized as a camera. You can then select the photos you wish to transfer, transfer them, and delete them.

You should be able to do this via the iPad directly.  Open the Photos application and the forward arrow, then select all of the photos you want to delete and click the red delete button.

  • How to Capture a Table with large number of Rows in Web UI Test?

    HI,
Is there any possibility to capture a DOM Tabe with large number of Rows (say more than 100) in Web UI Test?
    Or is there any bug?

    Hi,
You can try following code to capture the table values.
To store the table values in CSV :
    *web.table( xpath_of_table ).exportToCSVFile("D:\exporttable.csv", true);*
TO store the table values in a string:
    *String tblValues=web.table( xpath_of_table ).exportToCSVString();*
    info(tblValues);

  • Lookups with large number of records do not return the page

    Hi,
I am developing an application using Oracle JHeadstart 10.1.3 Preview Version 10.1.3.0.78
In my application I created a lookup under domains and used that lookup for an attribute (Display Type for this attribute is: dropDownList) in a group to get the translation fro this attribute. The group has around 14,800 records and the lookup has around 7,400 records.
When I try to open this group (Tab), the progress shows that it is progressing but it does not open even after a long time.
If I change the Display Type for the attribute from dropDownList to textInput then it works fine.
I have other lookups with lower number of records. Those lookups work fine with dropDownList Display Type.
Only I have this kind of problem when I have a lookup with large number of records.
Is there any limitation of record number for lookups under Domains?
    How I can solve this?
I need to translate the attribute (get the description from another table using the code).
    Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Syed

We have also faced similar issue, but us, it was happening when we were using the dropDownList in a table, while the same dropDownList was working in table format. In our case the JVM is just used to crash and after google'ing it here in forums, found that it might be related to some JVM issue on Windows XP machines without Service Pack 2.
Anyway... the workaround that we taken to get around the issue is to use LOV instead of a dropDownList in your jHeadStart.
    Hope this helps...

Lightroom 5.2 running Video (MOV) sometimes gets bogged down with dynamiclinkmediaserer.exe taking up 88% of the cpu time.  This was a bug in Lightroom 4.  When will it be fixed?

  • Barcode CODE 128 with large number (being rounded?) (BI / XML Publisher 5.6.3)

After by applying Patch 9440398 as per Oracle's Doc ID 1072226.1, I have successfully created a CODE 128 barcode.
But I am having an issue when creating a barcode whose value is a large number. Specifically, a number larger than around 16 or so digits.
    Here's my situation...
In my RTF template I am encoding a barcode for the number 420917229102808239800004365998 as follows:
    <?format-barcode:420917229102808239800004365998;'code128c'?>
I then run the report and a PDF is generated with the barcode. Everything looks great so far.
But when I scan the barcode, this is the value I am reading (tried it with several different scanner types):
    420917229102808300000000000000
    So:
         Value I was expecting:     420917229102808239800004365998
         Value I actually got:         420917229102808300000000000000
It seems as if the number is getting rounded at the 16th digit (or so, it varies depending of the value I use).
I have tried several examples and all seem to do the same.  But anything with 15 digits or less seems to works perfectly.
    Any ideas?
    Manny

    Yes, I have.
But I have found the cause now.
When working with parameters coming in from the concurrent manager, all the parameters define in the concurrent program in EBS need to be in the same case (upper, lower) as they have been defined in the data template.
Once I changed all to be the same case, it worked.
    thanks for the effort.
    regards
    Ronny

  • FR Layout issue with large number of columns

    Hi!
I'm developing a report in FR 11.1.1.3 with over 30 columns.
The issue is that when I run the report in web preview, the dropdown of dimension in page goes to the far right and disappears from the display.
If I reduce the number of the columns I don't have this problem.
I've already tried to maximize the workspace to the maximum without any result.
Can anyone help me to deal with reports with large numbers of columns?

IE8 could be the reason. According to the supported platform matrices (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/oracle-hyperion-epm-system-certific-2-128342.xls), check tab EPM System Basic Platform, row 70, in order IE8 to work, FR and Workspace should be patched.
    FR Patch number: 9657652
    Workspace Patch number: 9314073
Patches can be found on My Oracle Support. Just search for the patch number.
    Cheers,
