Bogus Safari 6.0 Bugs (Java?)

Having difficult nailing down exact problem or cause of seemingly random safari bugs. Text entered into boxes sometimes dissapear and reappear spontainously. Other times images and text appear 'on top of each other'. Ocationally whole chunks of text remain missing from web pages. A bug even occored in the few seconds I was creating an online Apple ID. Frequently the flashing text entry curson won't flash.
I have the latest Java plug-ins, Flash plug-ins, and already ran a check for flashback trojan.
Anyone else having simular problems? Suggestions? Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari keeps asking for Java 8 runtime environment even after multiple instals

In spite of instaling Java 8 Runtime environment 3 times & restarting safari after verification of Java I keep getting a popup telling me I need the installation to view web content .
I am getting rather bored of it I shall try shutting down the computer to see if this cures the problem.
Has any one else experienced this ?

Most likely, you have either the Facebook video calling plugin or the "NexDef" plugin for watching baseball streams. Both depend on the Java runtime distributed by Apple. If you no longer need the plugin, remove it. Otherwise, install Java.

  • After installing Java 7 version 21 Safari no longer sees Java

The Computer is running 10.7.5 fully patched. After installing Java 7, version 21 from Oracle Java and VPN no longer work. Everything looks OK in the Oracle Java control panel and Safari does not have Java plug-ins disabled. Removing and reinstalling Java have not solved the problem. Ive also went to http://javatester.org/version.html done the Java tests. However it does not even show that the Java plug-in is active or for that matter inactive. Any idea's other then not to use Java that I must use for VPN and WebEx?

I have the same problem. Called apple today since this seems to be a problem with Safari. Apple wanted 63 USD to help me solve this. Been trying to figure it out for a couple of days now but no luck.

  • Is there a way to reset safari and delete the java cache files automatically? Using an Applescript or automator?

I want to automate two things. 1) reset Safari. 2) delete java files from java prefs. At the same time with one action.

The preferences files generated by the Preferences API are namedcom.apple.java.util.prefs. The user’s preferences file is stored in their home directory (~/Library/Preferences/). The system preferences are stored in /Library/Preferences/and are only persisted to disk if the user is an administrator.

  • Safari iOS 7 bug: not rendering images

Safari has a bug, it does not render image from The Economist at all:
    http://www.economist.com/node/21586620?fsrc=scn/gp/wl/dc/politicsandpurse
Same goes for Safari modules that are used by other apps, e.g. Google+.
Chrome with data compression renders OK, but it does so because data compression goes through Google server, and only decoding is done on machine.
This all took place on iPad Mini.
    Shame on Apple Inc.

    Hi there,
    I can confirm this bug.
Not sure if this info is relevant, but this is my experience:
I am on the FIDO network, and so are two other people I know.
We all tried blocking numbers, and calls ring right through. Text messages are blocked successfully. (never tried facetime)
I also tried a ROGERS device running IOS7, and was successfully able to block my phone call from ringing through. HOWEVER, my call was forwarded to their voicemail, I was able to leave a voicemail for the person, and they did get an alert that they had a new voicemail.
I have not yet had a chance to test this on Bell, Telus, or any other carriers.
Spoke to Apple, and they advised me to do a hard reset (hold both buttons to shut off and reboot the phone), and if that fails to do an iOS restore.
I have yet to try this, but hopefully someone will have a better solution.

  • Safari 4 has bug(s)

I did not know that Safari 4 has bug(s), and went ahead to accept the Mac OS Update this afternoon. Now, I found out that I lost certain functions online such as I could not edit my webpage because Safari browser would not go to the webpage where I had to get on. Is there a recourse that I can reverse the Safari version to the older one?
    Thanks.
    Robert

    Hi, Dimaxum,
Thank you very much for posting back your good experience with Safari 4 in working with your website. Well, my website through Verizon does not need any software to upload or download. However, the problem was that I could not even click the icon for going to the window of my editable website. This happens in cases of both using Mac OS 10.4.11 and Mac OS 10.5.7. In the meantime, I could still go to my website with the old Safari 3.2.3. I checked the functions with different computers with Safari 4, which showed the same problems.
I believe that Safari 4 is far from perfect. Many users are complaining like I did. Worst of all, they could not uninstall Safari 4. I have spent more than a day, before I finally used 'archive and reinstall" to solve the problems. Now, I am happy again in using my computers with Safari 3.2.3 in both Mac OS 10.4.11 and and Mac OS 10.5.7. I hope that the bugs are only limited in these functions. But, who knows. One more thing that I realized is with Safari 4, the computer could not complete permission repair. I also hope Apple would move quickly to solve the problems.

  • Safari Frame Rows Bug (white block)

    http://www.selfcrew.com/websitetest/album_dubberneck.html
I'm building a site that uses framesets (outdated I've heard). None the less, on load, Safari will sporadically add a giant white space between the top and bottom frames. The big white space will disappear if you resize the window (by dragging the bottom right corner). It won't happen every time which is especially weird, but if one refreshes the page again and again it happens at least 1 in 5 loads. This does not happen in any other browser, and I downloaded Safari 4.0.2 this morning.
I'd love to know if anyone knows a fix for this, either Java or just some html that I overlooked. I'd be happy to post the code by request. Thanks in advance!

You've got a bigger problem.  See attached screenshot from Firefox when text size is increased in browser (Zoom, text only)
Start by using the code valiation tools below and fix reported errors.  90% of browser rendering problems are code related.  If your code is clean, chances are good that your pages will perform reasonably well in all the major browsers.

Conditional Comments are only recognized by MS Internet Explorer.  You can't use CCs to target other browsers.  But this is a moot point since your problem isn't caused by bugs in either Safari or Chrome.

  • Bug: Java applet cannot print, even with print permission granted.

I was not able to file this bug report at the official Apple bug report site, so...
    Summary:
When a java applet initiates a print job, the user is (correctly) presented with a dialog requesting permission for printing. Once permission is granted, the printing subsystem attempts to communicate with CUPS at localhost:631, and permission is denied. To the naive user, it appears that the applet is broken.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    Go to
    http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/921427/WordleCore_SourceCode
Once the applet has loaded, click the button labelled "Print...".
    Expected Results:
After permitting printing, the user should see the print dialog, and printing should proceed as normal.
    Actual Results:
Here is the relevant section of the stack trace generated when this happens:

    at sun.print.IPPPrintService.opGetAttributes(IPPPrintService.java:

    Regression:
This problem was introduced only with the most recent Java update.
    Notes:
There is no workaround for the applet author, other than to use a signed applet, which is prohibitively expensive, and which should not be required for printing, anyway. It's difficult to instruct the user in how to grant the appropriate permissions via policy files, since the finder will not allow a user to create a file named ".java.policy" in their home directory, and since the system policy file is write-protected.

You should file a bug report with Apple at http://bugreport.apple.com if you have a developer account or at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html if you do not have a developer account.
Good luck w/your issue and please update this thread if you encounter a solution.

  • Safari 6.0.4 - java applet keeps running when not in use?

    Mac OS X 10.7.5
    Safari 6.0.4
all the latest updates (software) as of 4/27/13
    Oracle's Java r 21 also installed (latest)
    website: http://javatester.org/version.html
NOTE: I have seen this on more than 1 computer that the 1st time running the Java applet (after clicking on the plugin missing placeholder, the app appears to begin loading, but 'hangs' as far as UI is concerned, although it is using CPU and accessing the disk the whole time.
Refreshing the page then allows you to see the Oracle java version displayed in the pink box
However, what I notice is that if you enter a new URL and go there, blowing away the Java applet page, guess what's still running in the background (via Activity Monitor) "Java Applet - javatester.org", occupying memory and using some small CPU.
this seems like ridiculously bad behavior in general. Has anyone else seen similar issues? is this related to an outstanding memory leak (bigger problem) in Safari? Any way to get java to behave if you aren't possibly using an applet?
could it be lazy cleanup/garbage collection in Safari? meaning it might vanish from the process list at some indeterminate point in the future? closing the tab it was running on (before a new URL was loaded) outright doesn't seem to kill it.

I have not used Onyx recently, although i use a number of other utils, and reset safari periodically.
It seems that it may be a delayed garbage collection issue. If I leave it for a bit and then come back it seems that the process is disappearing. If I can isolate anything more reliably I'll post again, but for now I'm going to stop worrying about it.
It was lingering long enough I thought maybe was a leak, but i guess I'm just not patient enough...
Also, I haven't reliably reproduced the high CPU cycle / hung applet condition on the 1st load. that may be something that shouldn't be going on (regarding the new security around java probably) but low pain point once I reload the page and tell safari to let the app run all the time.
    so just to recap
    - looks like the applet persistence in the process table is a delayed disposal issue that eventually gets done
    - hanging applet on 1st load post security patch may be something, but hitting cmd-R is a lot more satisfying than devoting a lot of time to tracking that down right now
    thanks for your suggestion

  • Safari 6.1 Breaks Java at the USPTO Again!

We have to login to the USPTO website using their custom encyrption that relies on Java operating properly.
The latest version of Safari has broken the USPTO java applete that is executed.
The Load File window to select the location of the digital certificate is broken.
The folder icons have the "not" symbol on them and no file is present in the selection window even though their clearly are files save in the folder.
It looks like Apple did not thoroughly test the latest version of Safari again.
This seems to happen everytime there is a Safari update.

    PJ\'sPal wrote:
    OK. I figured this out.
Safari 6.1 upgrade changed my secuirty settings.
I had to go back into Security Preferenes and select the Manage Websites button.
I then updated the security settings for the USPTO web pages to run in "unsafe mode" so that the USPTO java applette had access to my files on my computer.
It can now gain access to the digital certificate file.
I can see how many users are going to have problems.
I wish Apple would have warned us that we would have to update our security settings after this upgrade.
Just installed Java 7, Update 45 to my iMac running Mavericks.  After installing Java, I configured my Safari settings as PJ noted above, and it worked, giving the computer access to my folder that contains my encrypted key to the USPTO site.  I can now access Private PAIR and the EFS web filing service!
    Thanks to PJ!

  • Safari 3.1 bug on Gmail

Just upgraded my old version safari to 3.1, but today I found a bug when using Gmail.
I was trying to compose an email by using web based Gmail, when I put the cursor into composing area, it will jump to address field once when I press the SHIFT key.
A lot Mac fans in China reported this bug too on some Chinese Mac Forum.
Hope Apple could fix this bug ASAP!!!

    Discessed at
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=87447
    Summary:
I assume Google will fix this shortly. meanwhile,
    Work arounds:
    1) Click the "Newer Version" link when logged into your Gmail account. Holding down the shift key when typing a character will display it's capital correctly (if available). Newer version is available in "English" language only.
    2) click on the "Plain Text" option for the message field. I know this is cruddy, but it will allow you to use gmail (in Safari) again with capital letters as well as allow you to paste text into the message field. Hopefully either google or apple will fix this annoying bug, soon. There are other similar issues with the google apps, in spreadsheets and docs, hopefully they will address those as well.
    3) You can use CAPS lock to get a capital letter

  • Why is Safari blocking the latest Java plugin?

Today, I fired up Safari to access my work server but the required Java applet wouldn't run. Safari displayed "Blocked Plugin" and clicking it said my Java was out of date and/or a security risk. I upgraded to the most recent Java (7.10, I believe) and restarted everything, but Safari still blocks the plugin. Firefox does not and confirms it's installed correctly and works.
There's no higher version of Java or my Safari (6.0.2). What is going on and how can I resolve it?
    Thanks!
    Jeremy

I too am having this problem, and have tried every conceivable workaround.  Firefox is not an option, as it seems that the Juniper SSL-VPN product won't fire up the ncproxyd or pass the "host check" with Firefox 18 and Java7 -- so whilst other Java sites work, the VPN I need to use won't come up.
I've tried removing everything, reboot, checking permissions -- even ran Instruments in the Developer tool to figure out how Safari makes the determination if something is out of date or not.
There is a major Java security hole out at the moment, in the latest version, so the only thing I can think of is that perhaps Apple fired a "kill everything" command that is telling all Safari versions that no version of Java is safe.

  • Bug:Java install should remove old uninstall entries when updating in-place

Assume I have installed an (old) version of Java (under 64bit Win7)..
Now I download a newer/newest version of Java JDK and start installation process.
When prompted I tell the procedure to install JAva JDK in the SAME directory as the previous version.
So the old version does NOT exist any more afterwards.
Everything works fine except the fact that afterwards there is still the uninstall entry of the old version alive.
Java installation procedure should automatically remove these old uninstall entries.
I guess Oracle Java development team thinks users will install new Java versions always in different directories (which is not a must).
I think this is a bug or at least a feature request.
Where can I officially tell oracle to fix it?
Is there an official bug/feature request form?
    Thx
    Peter

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 20.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
