BOINC Seti@Home Core Duo Show Graphics Computation Error

I'm running BOINC, Seti@Home, on both my PowerBook and Core Duo 20-inch iMac. When I highlight a work unit and click on "Show Graphics" the PowerBook brings up the graphics just fine. On the iMac Core Duo when I click on "Show Graphics" the work unit aborts and shows a computation error.
Does anyone else see this difference and is there a fix?
imac Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

When I click on the work unit, the "show graphics" remains dim. Mine is set to run only after five minutes of inactivity.
The computation error may be due to the Rosetta translation. Maybe will see a universal version soon.

You need a "Core 2 Duo" for lion, and I'm guessing you only have a "Core Duo"  My wife's macbook is also a "Core Duo" and has Snow Leapord, but cannot install Lion.....

  • Temperature - BOINC - SETI@Home - MBP 17"

    Hello!
Is 91 degrees Celsius a safe continuous temperature for the 2.5 GHz Core i7-2860QM CPU in my late 2011 Macbook Pro 17"? Will that continuous temperature reduce the life span of the CPU or logic board components?
I would like to run SETI@Home / BOINC on my laptop for many hours at a time, and for many days in a row when the laptop isn't being used. BOINC by default uses 100% of the CPU in order to crunch science data. I can adjust the settings to cause BOINC to use less of the CPU, but I'm trying to not be over-reactive to temperature readings that may be perfectly safe, even for extended periods of time, and on a regular basis. Please note, the 91 degree temperature is with an external notebook cooling fan assisting in the cooling. The unassisted temperature would be much higher.
I've also included the temperature readings from iStat Pro temperature monitoring application to diversify the data. Please note, the data listed in the categories "CPU A Temperature Diode" from "Hardware Monitor" and "CPU" from "iStat Pro" seems to be identical. The application "Temperature Monitor" gave me the same readings as "Hardware Monitor," and so is not listed.
Temperatures with CPU at 100% Usage:
    Hardware Monitor:
CPU A Temperature Diode     : 91 degrees Celsius
    CPU A Proximity                   : 81 degrees Celsius
    iStat Pro:
    CPU                                     : 91 degrees Celsius
CPU Heatsink                       : 54 degrees Celsius
Temperatures with CPU at 20% Usage:
    Hardware Monitor:
CPU A Temperature Diode     : 71 degrees Celsius
    CPU A Proximity                   : 67 degrees Celsius
    iStat Pro:
    CPU                                     : 71 degrees Celsius
CPU Heatsink                       : 52 degrees Celsius
(Note: The BOINC application is likely also utilizing the computers Graphics Processing Unit, and adding to the CPU temperature readout as a result since both processing units are supposedly using the same heat pipes to stay cool).
Any comments, suggestions, or questions to help produce an answer are welcome and much appreciated!

    I like your style .
I, also, just installed boinc last night to help save the world with my computer while I sleep. I'm about to go do that right now-- yes it is 9 am here-- but I figured I'd make sure my computers don't melt before I do so.
Right now my MacBookPro5,2 duder is running at 68° C according to smcFanControl-- it should be noted that I find the sound of the fans soothing- especially in this case because it reminds me that I'm helping compute data that will be used to understand global warming, explore the causes of protein malfunctions to prevent  diseases and generate models of cognitive processes. That should be someone's sales pitch. I have fans set to 6000rpm (the maximum safe fan speed from what I understand)
    Whatever.
    I'm tired.
    my BOINC settings are:
-Computing allowed while computer is in use
-Use gpu while computer is in use only after the computer has been idle for 3 minutes and only while processor usage is less than 30 percent.
-Switch between Applications every 20 minutes
-use at most 50% of CPU time**
--Use at most 10 gigs of disk space
--use at most 75% of page file (swap space)
--Use at most 20% of memory when computer is in use
--Use at most 75% of memory when computer is idle.
--leave applications in memory while suspended.
---My energy saver prefs are set for better performance,
---the computer is set to go to sleep never
---display goes to sleep after 3 minutes
----In terminal I set my computer to go to sleep after 4 hours of processing:
    $ sudo shutdown -s +240
I'll report back when I wake up and let you know if my computer burned my building down.
I'm not too worried about it.
Anyone else running boinc or something similar if you could please post your settings/stats/temperature results, it'd be much appreciated.

  • BOINC / SETI@home Problem with idle-Mode

    Hello,
I installed Boinc and connected to the seti@home project.
I tried both, the local preferences in boinc-manager and the online-preferences for boinc and seti@home. I told the client to start working after the pc has been idle for 3 minutes and to stop working when the pc is in use (keyboard or mouse movement).
Unfortunately it does not work. Boinc waits for 3minutes before it starts working, but it doesn't stop when I use keyboard or mouse...
    Any suggestions are most welcome!
    thx
    cl10k

The Boinc client is only set up for stopping if the non-Boinc processes throw the processor more than 25%.
Are you using boinc or boinc-nox?  I'm using boinc-nox because I don't really need the graphics.  This might be a solution if you aren't using it.  The problem I'm having and it might actually be my broad-failure card, but it might also be a race condition with my boinc.

Can I Upgrade my computer to Lion.  I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor.  My computer is 6 years old.  Right now I have Snow Leopard.

I have an old iMac about that age that I upgraded to Lion to test my 3rd party applications for compatibility. It upgraded quite simply. Please backup or save all your info/etc to an external CD/DVD/Hard drive, then try to run the installer. The Lion installer will analize your Mac for compatibility before it does anything, and will alert you to it's decisision. My 17" iMac is also 2 GHZ Intel core duo. Surprisingly for many of the things I use it for it works as good as my multi thousand dollar MacPro workstation. Best of luck. But Lion isn't compatible with many third party applications and drivers for printers; scanners; etc.

  • [Solved] BOINC (Seti@Home) Problem :(

    Hi guys,
I have installed Boinc with the intention of running the Seti project on it.
However there's where my luck ran out. I can't seem to do anything with it no matter what I try.
    I installed Boinc as per:
    pacman -Sy boinc
This went off without a hitch so I then add my user to the "boinc" group.
However when i run boinc_gui the interface pops up but It says
"(X) Error" above "retrieve current status"
I can't click "add project" or "attach to manager" or anything,
I'm sure its something obvious I'm missing but Ive looked all over the net and messed about
with a lot of permissions and so on. I'm lost!
    Any thoughts?

I'm sorry, but your sister, unless she had already turned on the "Find my iPhone" feature and the person who took the phone has not disabled it, is out of luck. She should report the theft to local police authorities, including the serial number of her iPhone. While her experience is unfortunate, there are good reasons why Apple cannot do anything else about it.
I hope she gets her phone back.
    Best of luck.

  • Mac Book Pro 17 Core Duo & Leopard: Graphic/Display Glitches

Since I installed Leopard, the display on my MBP has the strangest behavior. On a regular basis it displays many graphic glitches such as horizontal and vertical black lines, some pixelization, windows don't refresh properly and so on. The MBP is also connected to a Apple Cinema HD Display and the glitches appear on both monitors. I have to restart to make them go away.
I've been looking all over the place on these forums and on the internet, and found that it looks like a recurrent problem with some ATI cards, (my MBP has the Radeon X1600/256Mb). Some people were able to fix it by installing a missing extension from ATI, but it does not seem to apply to this particular model of MBP or graphic card.
I did a clean install, zap the pram, verify the cables, nothing has fixed it so far.
While in Tiger, I have never had such a problem, so I am really wondering if anybody out there has had the same problems, and if a solution has been found. Any hints?
    Thanks for your help.

I've had similar problems, now with the additional problem of frequent, unrecoverable crashes. "Freezes" may be a more appropriate term. I get strangely colord single-pixel lines across the screen both in regular browsing in firefox and when playing back video in Final Cut Pro. Sometimes these lines stay on the screen when I move the windows around, sometimes they can be "erased" by moving the window away and moving it back. I have had a very bad time indeed, and no apparent solution.

  • Can't set up a Homegroup on this computer, error 0x80630203

Has anyone had this problem? A google search seems to indicate that this has something to do with the "peer name resolution service" failing to start.  The machine that gets this error has two network adaptors, and shares the internet(ICS) with the rest of my home network, it is also an upgrade from Vista Home Premium.
    Jon

I know this is a really old discussion. I thought it might help somebody anyway, so here goes.
Even though I don't use Homegroup myself, I got tired of seeing the Peer Networking errors in the event logs.
It seems that error code 0x80630203 indicates a problem with the file permissions in one or both of the following directories (for Windows 7):
    C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys
I have written a small batch file to automate the commands needed to fix my computer and hopefully someone else's. This file should be run from a command prompt with elevated privileges. Or right click in Explorer and choose "Run As Administrator".
Just copy and paste the following lines into Notepad and save with your choice of filename and the extension .bat
    @rem *************************** Start of Batch File *************************
@rem This batch file will hopefully fix one of the possible problems with Peer Networking
@rem Step 1: stop the services that might be using the files and directories we need to work on
    Net stop p2psvc
    Net stop pnrpsvc
    Net stop p2pimsvc
@rem Step 2: take ownership of the directories
    takeown /f C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking /r /d Y
    takeown /f C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys /r /d Y
@rem Step 3: grant Everyone full access to the files/directories involved
    icacls C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking /t /c /grant Everyone:F
    icacls C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys /t /c /grant Everyone:F
@rem Step 4: start the Peer Networking services
    Net Start p2pimsvc
    Net Start pnrpsvc
    Net Start p2psvc
@rem Step 5: the icacls commands above open a hole in the security of these files/directories
@rem         need to remove Everyone from the ACLs
    icacls C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking /t /c /remove Everyone
    icacls C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys /t /c /remove Everyone
@rem will pause here so I can see if there were any error messages
    pause
rem **************************** End of Batch File *******************
Be sure to run the HomeGroup troubleshooter afterward and let it fix the permissions.
It is also possible that you may have to delete everything in the 2 directories mentioned above. Doing so may (probably will) delete your HomeGroup if you have one.
I hope this helps someone out

Is there any know hardware error?

I had the same problem you are having. My bluetooth would always go in and out and my computer wouldnt be able to sleep because of this problem. I finally had Apple phone support send me a box.
Apple support sent me a box for my Macbook repair. I received the computer back 2 days later with a replaced bluetooth module and I havent had a problem since.

  • IMAC 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 bootcamp  graphics driver error bluescreen

Purchased iMAC 27" 3.4 GHz i7 because I wanted MacOS as development environment and Windows for playing games - thought I'd found the dream machine.
Installed bootcamp, Windows 7, and finally bootcamp drivers
Checked and updated Apple / Windows until no new updates available
System operates fine under Mac OS, but frequently crashes under Windows 7 with bluescreen of death (graphics driver fault)
This occurs when gaming (Batman Arkham City, or simply using Google Earth, IE)
Updated driver for Radeon HD 6970M from ATI AMD website with same result.
Windows 7 now recognised a new driver was available for Radeon HD 6900 series and updated (this has the most recent release date being late last year)
System still has fault under Windows but driver appears to reset and continue without requiring a Windows restart (mostly).
A quick Google reveals I am not alone with discussions concerning the indentical proplem spanning several years and apple machines - generally pointing the finger at the lack apple SMC temperature control under Windows. Is this true? If so I not sure if I should expect a solution from Apple.
Is their a solution? I am reluctant to use third party software to control minimum fan speeds - mainly because I expect more from this machine (no matter which OS is running it).

    thanx Hatter,
I see InputRemapper had fan control added, not sure if it will be suitable for later machines. I'll see if I can find anything newer.
Last night used Windows for gaming - in the end the top edge of the iMac was to hot to touch - can't be good for the machine.
Wonder why Apple don't include a fan control function as part of bootcamp - it would seem a critical function to protect the hardware.
Is there a down side to running the fans harder (like wearing them out). I have been able tu use smcFanControl under OSX to raise the minimum fan speeds.before I reboot to Windows.
smcFanControl has speeds for ODD,HDD, and CPU. Does the iMAC graphics card (HD 6970M) have its own fan?
sorry lots of questions - to be honest kind of got hooked on Batman Arkham City ... and it runs very nicely, just a shame it cooks the hardware.

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz with 1GB+2GB memory module

Is it possible to install an 2gb modulle along with my 1gb module witch came standard with my macbook pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz?
Im thinking about the following modulle:
    Kingston KTA-MB667/2G
    (Any other suggestions?)
And just for my information is it possible to install 2x 2gb memory?
    Thanks!

But i still have a few questions:
Is the 2gb modulle not supported or the total of 3gb
    is not supported?
I want to know it absolutely 100% for sure becouse i
would love the 2gb addition. And i don't want a buy
    something wrong :P
From what I have read in various forums a single 2GB module will work in the Core Duo machines. 3GB is not supported however. People who have tried adding 3GB (2GB +1GB) to a Core Duo report the computer would not boot.
I am not sure why you would want to use a single 2GB module though. Perhaps if you were wanting to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo later?
I would say if your going to try to use a single 2GB module understand the risks. i.e. I don't how much people actually tested for stability etc. other than to try it and say yeah it works. You do loose the dual-channel configuration for whatever that is worth.
I would make sure you purchase from a place that has a liberal return policy if your going to try it. Just in case your not happy with it.

  • Graphics corrupted / garbled display on Core Duo MacBook Pro (ATI)

My first-generation (Core Duo) MacBook Pro (with ATI chipset) is having video problems.
When this happens, the graphics become corrupted / display becomes garbled and the computer freezes shortly afterwards making it basically unusable. You can just about follow a garbled mouse pointer around, but it is unresponsive.
The only solution is a hard reset (power button for seven seconds).
    Has anyone encountered this problem?
At first, I suspected that the computer was overheating as it seemed to occur only after prolonged use - but in the past two days, it could freeze immediately at login screen basically making it completely unusable.
Apple Hardware Test (on original CD) says "No Problems Found", but I still suspect hardware trouble as this only began occuring a week or so after my computer had the left fan replaced (it stopped working after an earlier problem in January at the Apple Store in Highcross Leicester.
I suspect something ELSE is wrong and that it requires service again, so am planning to go to the store in Birmingham on Sunday (which is closer to me -- I went to the Leicester store last time). What should I ask Apple to look at? The graphic corruption occurs even when running right off the Leopard CD, or even on the Apple Hardware Test!

Hi - thanks for your help with the issue. Just as an update, I brought my Mac in for service on the 8th February at the Apple Store Bullring – and oddly, it worked perfectly in the Store. However, I showed them this thread and the pictures they had – and they replaced the logic board and apparently it's one of the costliest parts ever possible to place, shockingly expensive that it's like the cost of a new laptop! However as it's under AppleCare (well, higher education parts and labour warranty) it was covered. Phew!
I got my Mac back today, and so far, it appears to be working perfectly (though as the graphic problems were intermittent, I'm making sure I do backups!), and fingers crossed, I should now have a working Mac once again!

Hi. My parent's computer is an older, white iMac with a GMA 950 integrated graphics. Currently it's running Tiger and it runs very well.
However, I am in town for a short bit and was thinking about updating their system while I'm here. Does the iMac 1.83 with integrated graphics run Snow Leopard very well? Or should I just leave Tiger on it?
