Bold 9900 - help please, upgrading from 8520 perhaps

Hi all
I have the 8520, and in the new year perhaps upgrading to the Bold 9900.
On my 8520 I use the side button every day, to jump straight to the Instant Messaging folder, to use BBM and WhatsApp.
I see the 9900 does not have that.  Is there any way on this phone you can setup shortcuts like that?
Is the keyboard as good as the 8520, or better, or about the same?
Any help would be appreciated, as "real world reviews" are better than what the shop tells you.

  • I need help please, upgrading from OS 10.6.8...

Please help me - I'm such a technophobe!! I need help upgrading from OS 10.6.8... I get part way through the process and get a box saying "The link needs to be opened with an application" and I don't know what to do next...

The only way to upgrade from 10.6.8 (which is high as Snow Leopard goes) is to obtain Lion or Mountain Lion from the Online Apple Store or Yosemite from the Mac App Store.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Yosemite (10.10.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only. Mavericks (10.9.x) is no longer available.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Yosemite are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Yosemite is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications). Mountain Lion can be obtained the Online Apple Store.
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • Blackberry Bold 9900 OS software update from version 7.0.0 to version 7.1.0

    Helo Everyone
I tried to upgrade my Blackberry Bold 9900 device software from version 7.0.0 to version 7.1.0 but having difficulties. I tried using the Blackberry Desktop Manager but there was no version 7.1.0 listed among the available updates. Even when I tried to do it directly via the Blackberry official website, Version 7.1.0 was also not listed. Finally I tried to do the update with my phone directly by accessing: Options>Device>Software Updates.
It displayed my Current Version of 7.0.0 Bundle 2406 and an available version 7.1.0 Bundle 1149. But when I Clicked Perform Update to download the new version it showed preparing to download but then displayed an error message such as "The download cannot continue because your device cannot connect to the update server using any of the following methods:Wi-Fi".
Meanwhile, I did not perform the upgrade with Wi-Fi because I have an active blackberry data subscrip of 2GB from my mobile network provider.
Please I need help on how to perform the upgrade from version 7.0.0 to version 7.1.0 with the latest Bundle.
Thank you all as i await your kind solution.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):
    1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below.
    2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
    3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
    http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
    4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
    5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
6a) For changing your installed BB OS level (upgrade or downgrade), you can launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC.
6b) Or, for reloading your currently installed BB OS level as well as for changing it, bypass the Desktop Software and use LOADER.EXE directly, by proceeding to step 2 in this process:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC.
If, during the processes of 6a or 6b, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Need help with upgrade from Adobe Creative Suite to PS CS4

My old laptop with Photoshop on it crashed and I ended up purchasing a new laptop.
I'm trying to reload my PS CS4.  I am using an upgrade from an educational Adobe Creative Suite Premium to the CS4 and when I loaded it on my old laptop I had to get installation help through customer service, but now customer service will not help me since it is CS4.
When installing the upgrade, it tell me to select the product I already own.  I own the educational full creative suite, but am only upgrading the Photoshop.  I chose Photoshop CS and tried entering the serial number for the suite.  It tells me that the serial number doesn't match the product chosen.  Of course the only products I'm allowed to choose from is Photoshop CS, CS2, or CS3 and not Creative Suite Premium.
The other serial numbers on this CS is Golive CO and Pagemaker Plug-in.
I was told there are Adobe customer service reps here on the forum, please tell me what it was I need to do to get my Photoshop installed.
    Thanks

i wasn't aware that you could get a ps4 at an upgrade price using an older creative suite produect.  i searched online and found this thread (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/476009) which makes it appear that was not a valid upgrade path.
but, if you're confident that was a valid upgrade path, i'm pretty sure something will need to be done on adobe's end and no amount of manipulation, on your end only, will work.
your best bet would be to get help in this forum from an adobe staff member like jeff wright who is very knowledgeable and goes out of his way to help adobe customers.  to that end, if i were you, i would start a new thread mentioning his name in your title and in your initial post explaining:
you have the educational Adobe Creative Suite Premium and purchased a photoshop cs4 upgrade years ago that required adobe support help to install years ago.
that worked well until a recent computer problem forced you buy a new laptop and you are now trying to reinstall that ps cs4 and again need support help but have been refused help because cs4 is not current.

I upgraded from Windows 8 to XP and got everything else working except for the sound. hi. if you want to that your sound device was in control panel after a reboot , here is only one solution for that, all you have to do is upgrade first  hdaudio bus controler. Driver must be copied first from computer with Vista os. if your xp is 32bit you have to copy this driver from any Vista x32 if  your xp is 64 bit then Vista must be x64 as well.  driver for forced upgrade through device menager you will find in any vista os  Windows--> System32-->DriverStore-->FileRepository-->hdaudbus.inf9689af2f
once copied that file from any computer equiped with Windows Vista , copy it on your desktop, next step go to the device menager  and find in system device tab 2 entries UUA High definition audio and update both by forced update. You have to point exactly where is located your driver copied from vista. after this update your sound device will be in the control panel and device manager always and permanent.
I had the same problem with my xp instaled on satelite p500 and only this solution solved my problem with disappearing sound device after reboot.
ps. if this solution help you please tell us about it.

    Hi,
You need to use a different IP address for the SCAN VIP. In your example, it cannot be the same as dlpqcora1.
Also, if you are not using a DNS to resolve it, then be aware that only one IP address can be configured (from note +[ID 887522.1] 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure Single Client Access Name (SCAN) Explained+ ):
    >
Instead of DNS or GNS, Can we use '/etc/hosts' to resolve SCAN?
Oracle strongly recommends that you do not configure SCAN VIP addresses in the hosts file. But if you use the hosts file to resolve SCAN name, you can have only one SCAN IP address.
If hosts file is used to resolve SCAN hostname, you will receive Cluster Verification Utility failure at end of installation (See NOTE 887471.1 for more details)

  • Help with upgrading from Photoshop Elements to Lightroom 3

Any tutorials/books/best practices on upgrading from PSE to LR 3? I have thousands and thousands of photos in PSE, and I'm sure the upgrade is not as transparent and smooth as Adobe promotes it to be.
Any suggestion, advice or past experience will be greatly appreciated.

here is a set of instructions on doing what you want.

Lightroom detects if your computer has a Photoshop Elements catalog and can import photos and data from the PSE catalog into a new Lightroom catalog. Lightroom imports photos and data from Photoshop Elements 6 and later on Windows. Lightroom imports photos and data from Photoshop Elements 9 on Mac OS.
Note: For help troubleshooting errors or problems when importing PSE catalogs into Lightroom, see the Adobe Support article Lightroom 3 cannot upgrade Photoshop Elements catalogs (cpsid_85517).
In the Library module, choose File > Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog. The Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog dialog box displays the most recently opened Photoshop Elements 6 (PSE6), Photoshop Elements 7 (PSE7), or Photoshop Elements 8 (PSE8), or Photoshop Elements 9 (PSE9) catalog.
To choose a different PSE catalog, click the Photoshop Elements drop-down menu.
To change the destination of the new Lightroom catalog, click Change and navigate to a different folder.
Click Upgrade to import the PSE catalog into a new Lightroom catalog.

  • Help after Upgrading from 08 to 11, Don't Do IT

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and also iphoto 08 to the current 11 (9.1.1) While 08 worked just fine, 11 is a complete dog with the SBB running almost constantly. I don't know if its faces or just my collection is too big (~30,000 pics), or my IMAC is too old, but is there anyway to make this better without going back to 08?
On a side note, I think the new interface is really poor, with 10X the amount of mouse travel from one corner to the other. I can't seem to edit with picture information viewable at the same time, and "full screen" apparently doesn't really mean full screen. Any thoughts on if Apeture will work any better? This whole upgrade experience to something that is clunkier, slower, 10x the mouse movements, all with "new" looks is so PC-like, it brings up bad memories.

I see you have been clobbered by the email changes within iphoto,
Since 9.1.1 you can email exactly the same way as you could in earlier versions.
but I always found it helpful to edit photos with photo information visible at the same time. Is there no way to do this now?
    None that I can see.
    Can faces be turned off?
No. Once it's finished the first scan you can just ignore it.
Does rebuilding your library using Library Manager have risks?
Everything has risks. Make a back up first. Note also what's not in the rebuilt Library.
n your opinion is Apeture likely to handle 35000 pics better or is it just a bigger monstrosity using more cpu and bringing things to a slower crawl?
I have no answer for that question. I use Aperture all the time and I have no issues with it. It's a much more powerful app. But wander over to the Aperture forum and you'll see a share of those "Aperture is a Disaster, the sky is falling and Apple is turning into Microsoft" posts there too
When Aperture was $199 I used to say that unless you shoot large volumes of Jpeg or are shooting Raw there wasn't much value n it. But with the price down at $80 you may feel differently.
It's tempting to think of Aperture as iPhoto Pro, or iPhoto's big brother, but it's not. It's a very different app. Iphoto is designed with the home shooter, a guy with a point and shoot camera who wants to manage his snaps, make a book or handy slideshow and make it easy for him to send the kid's birthday pics to GrandMa. Those are the features front and centre in the app.
Aperture is designed for the Pro user. It can do these things too, but they are not front and centre. Front and centre is managing very high volumes of images and processing the outturn from a shoot. If iPhoto is about importing, fixing and sharing 30 pics from the kid's birthday, Aperture is about importing processing and finishing 2,500 from the Wedding you shot today, and you need to get it done today because you'll shoot another 2,500 at one tomorrow.
There is an Aperture trial available at http://www.apple.com/aperture/ (see at bottom right) and that's the best way to tell.

  • HELP PLEASE: Upgrade OS X 10.5.8 to 10.6.7

Hey everyone, thanks for taking time to read this.

So I have a MacBook Pro purchased in 2007 running OS X 10.5.8.
I have resisted upgrading for many years in fear of slowing down an already "aging" machine; however, I need to upgrade my OS in order to install software required by my graduate school.
I am attempting to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 directly to OS X 10.6.7
Note: My CD/DVD drive is busted!
I was able to get an OS X 10.6.7 disc formatted properly onto a USB drive to install on my MacBook Pro.
I insert the USB key, reboot my computer, hold ALT/option, and select the option to boot the OS X install disk from my USB drive.
    The following occurs:
    - Select Language: (English)
    Preparing Installaton ...
After 5 seconds or less, a small error message pops-up:
Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer.
If you want to restore your system from a Time Machine backup click "Restore from backup." (Restore from backup) / (Restart)
I've researched allover and cannot find any answers to my problem. I suppose I could have a "bad install," but I am nearly positive everything was transferred/formatted properly and the error message itself seems to indicate the matter is with the computer.
According to my research, my laptop meets all the system requirements for Snow Leopard, so I really don't know what to do.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this I would sincerely appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Need Urgent Help on Upgradation from 10.2.0.3 to 10.2.0.5

    Dear Gurus,
Please help out on this to get some documentation
Steps to Upgrade the DB version from 10.2.0.3 to 10.2.0.5--------
    a) What are the specific server patches, kernel parameters required
    b) Do we need to apply any application patches
    c) High level tasks required for achieving this.
    Thanks,

this is patching activity, which you should perform. first you should download the patch set#4(10.2.0.5) from oracle support and patches on this (CPU or PSU's). Then just follow the instructions given in the patch set readme file. the more generic steps can be described as below:
    1) back up your databases running under this oracle binaries
    2) back up your oracle_home
    3) back up your oracle inventory
    4) apply patch set, usually strightforward by invoking setup.exe
    5) in case of success, apply CPU's or PSU on the base of version 10.2.0.5
    6) perform the post upgrade tasks described in both patch set readme file and CPU's readme file. Usually first includes running catupgrd.sql and second the corresponding catcpu or similar named script.
    7) make the necessary checks to make sure upgrade were successfull(usually checking component's status via dba_registry or registry$history views)
    8) run utlrp.sql script to recompile invalid objects(this script usually needs to be run before upgrade/patching also, in case you have invalid objects on your database)

  • Googlemail / Bold 9700 Help Please....

    Hi folks.
I have been sat at my computer for hours now trying different things to try and solve this issue I have, and with no luck!!!
I have a Bold 9700 on the Orange network in the UK. When I set it up, the email side of things worked perfectly. I could send and receive emails from Googlemail.
I then registered my device on the internet, connecting via USB, and it asked me to update my device, which I did.
Now, I cannot seem to send or receive any emails, plus my Facebook application seems to have disappeared....
    I have tried:
    1. Adding and then deleting email accounts.
    2. A full reset with the battery off.
    3. Sending service books.
    4. Banging my head on my desk......
The email icon on my device doesn't want to delete when I remove the email address from the system, is this right?
The device is connected at home with UMA/Wireless.
Any suggestions please or is it best to contact Orange?

    Hi there!
I suggest the following steps, in order, even if some seem redundant to what you've already tried:
    1) Register HRT
Homescreen > Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table > (it does not matter which line is current) > Register Now
    2) Resend Service Books
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
    3) Batt Pull Reboot
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should try again deleting and re-adding your BIS conduits for the affected email accounts. Failing that, contacting your carrier would be the next step.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Help needed upgrading from 4.1 to 6.2 for transfer to new Pre

I have a Sony Clie PEG-SJ22 that I sync on two computers using Palm Desktop 4.1.0 on each.  The version on the computer in front of me lives in D:\Program Files\Sony Handheld.  I just bought a Palm Pre and learned that in order to sync my data to it, I would have to first upgrade to Palm Desktop 6.2.  I downloaded the 6.2 installation file and ran it.  It recognized that Palm Desktop was already installed and prompted me to click "Yes" to upgrade it which I did.  However the installation froze with the progress bar about 3/4 of the way through.  I End-Tasked the installation, but now I can't run either the new version or the old one.  (In fact the new version seems to have disappeared from \Program Files.)  When I try to run the old version I get error messages about missing dll files.  Before I try re-installing (or anything else) what should I do to make this go properly?  Is there a problem because my old version of Palm Desktop was a Sony-Clie-branded version?  Or is it something else?
    Thanks

G3 iMAC   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

Upgrading is an individual thing involving various factors, the chief one today being expense. With a MacMini being available SO inexpensively, especially now that even a used market has developed on them, spending money to upgrade an old computer will still leave you with an "old" and probably much slower old computer, as the bus speeds have dramatically increased in the past few years, all other things being equal (RAM, HD space, OS), will still make a faster computer in a new(er) one.
If one likes to tinker with computers, then cost is not as much as factor as it is partly a "hobby," by definition not an economic matter.
If you have programs you like and work and you don't "need" newer versions and they run on your old computer presently, then there is something for leaving the status quo and simply get a second computer (say a MacMini) and use it for the newer stuff as it comes along and as your old stuff "breaks" (however, my MacPlus still has yet to break!)
Some models of Macs lend themselves to upgrading much more than others. In general, those which came with extra RAM slots, extra PCI slots, extra bays space for hard drives, CD burners, and had a few different built-in ports, are more worthwhile to upgrade and are easier to do. I would think, for example, an older iMac is more likely better left "as is" and to save for a newer Mac. A tower with pci slots available might be worth some inexpensive upgrades, such as an USB card to run a printer.
Finally, one needs to remember that a computer is just a tool, not a status symbol, so if it is useful as is, then let it be. If it is not useful as is, then the cost analysis for any replacement purchase kicks in: how much to "fix" versus buying "new" (or "newer" on eBay or from a reseller)?
The OS X issue is a separate problem: OS X is a completely different operating system fundamentally (UNIX) from the traditional MacOS up through 9.2.2. OS X's Classic Environment lets one load OS 9.x to run older traditional Mac programs (assuming THOSE programs themselves will work on OS 9.) Technology is moving so fast that the bottom edge of "current" is getting way way past what will WORK on the older Macs. This means at some point one needs to plan on getting a newer machine which will work on the internet things out there. Most system requirements these days specify high end Panther (10.3.9) or Tiger (10.4.x) bypassing completely the MacOS, OS X puma and jaguar. Processor speed is hovering as a minimum requirement aroung 500 mH often. RAM is around 256MB bare minimum, more recommended. Mac processors are more frequently specifying G4, G5, or Intel, leaving behind even the G3s (although that may be a case of them just not spending time and money to test on a G3 than a true mandatory requirement.) As Tiger is now a nicely mature version of OS X, it does like (require?) a much more powerful computer to work satisfactorily. Thus, your old computer may still work for years well on its contemporaneous setup, and at some point, one gets a newer computer to do the newer stuff, making for a smooth transition.

  • HELP! upgrading from 10.2.8 on a powerpc g3 500mhz 640 mb

Please help! after my computer sadly died, i had to wipe it then reinstall old os x 10.2.8. (originally came with os x 9, however the apple store kindly put on a newer os x when i had problems last year (the orignial os x 9 discs were damaged)
now my safari browser 1.0.3 (v 85.8.1) fails to work on 99% of websites. is there any way i can upgrade my operating system so it supports a newer version of safari.
i am unfortunately not very computer literate, but very able to follow instructions! i'm not in a great position as the apple people would no longer help with my "vintage" mac :o( but im convinced it can be fixed as they managed to do it last year.
    thanks
    Jo

    Hello joaadams,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
a pal had a copy of 10.4.10 but my computer just spits the discs straight back out
I assume this disk was probably machine specific disk for 10.4 and not full retail disks? Remember, also, that Tiger disks are dvd and not cd (there was a special dvd to cd exchange program originally offered but this is no longer available form Apple to my knowledge). So if your machine is cdrom drive and not a combo drive or dvd drive then you would need to install via another Mac and Firewire using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
10.4 Tiger full retail disks sell at a premium these days but can be found through a variety of online resellers such as on ebay etc. Be careful when purchasing as you need "Full Retail Install" disks and not machine specific or upgrade disks.
If you upgrade to 10.4 and then update to 10.4.11 you can use a later version of Safari browser.
If you find you cannot upgrade to Tiger 10.4 you might try upgrading, after purchasing some OS 10.3 Retail install disks (again on a source such as ebay and update-able to 10.3.9) and then you could use a slightly more updated browser such as Firefox or my recomendation would be Camino 1.6.6. Be aware though of System requirements for any of these browsers....read carefully. Panther Full Retail Install disks can be found much cheaper than Tiger 10.4 disks but are still limited much more than the later 10.4 OS.
post back with any further questions and/or comments,
    LS
