Bold font showing up as outline system wide

At first I thought it was a browser issue.
Certain h1 elements were showing up as outlined when I knew they shouldn't be.
Ex:
http://markgretzinger.com/fontissue/fontissue_browser.png
...but then I noticed it in the dashboard as well:
http://markgretzinger.com/fontissue/fontissue_dash.png
It must be an incorrect system font, right??
How do I identify which one?

Hi digsafe, and a warm welcome to the forums!
How do I identify which one?
Go to that page, then view Source, see which font it's calling out.
I suspect Helvetica of some kind, likely Helvetica Nueue...

  • None of the fonts from /Library/Fonts show up in the system! :-/

    Hello all!
I have a very weird issue on 10.4.8 (Intel).
For some reason, none of the standard system fonts that reside in /Library/Fonts show up anymore. Neither in the system-wide font selector, nor in Font Book. Stuff in ~/Library/Fonts and /System/Library/Fonts is what's only left.
If I open a document in Pages it will say the fonts I used are missing. Likewise all web sites are displayed with Helvetica...
I tried removing all user fonts, re-logging in, re-booting - doesn't help... Any ideas what it may be?
    Thanks for any help,
    Artemiy.

Very strange! If you start up and as soon as you hear the chime press and hold the Shift key. When you see the splash screen with "Safe Mode" release the Shift key. A Safe Boot takes longer as the system repairs the disk, tosses font caches, and disables all third party startup items (and some Apple ones). After it boots try your programs and see if they now see the fonts. If so it may be there was a corrupt cache. Restart normally and see if everything is still OK.

  • Disable font-smoothing system wide

I want to disable font-smoothing (anti aliase) system wide for mavericks operating system. I already turned off font smoothing for LCD from system preferences (in general).
But it still shows blurry for small fonts in my editor (Zend studio for Eclipse). And it make totally impossible to read small codes.
    Any help would be great.

It's definetely the issue. This worked for me: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=382972

  • Bold font is too wide in browsers

I actually have Linux Mint installed, but searching google indicates that the Archlinux forum has far and away the most expertise with the gnome font system, including a very informative wiki page that I have read and tried to apply, unfortunately to no avail.
The reason I'm asking this question is that I feel like I'm so close to having a gorgeous desktop, but what looks like a rendering error looks like it may frustrate me every time I surf the web.
I've used advanced settings (which I installed following a tutorial) to set my system font to Sawasdee, which looks very good. In fact, I would call Sawasdee the best looking screen font, by my personal preference, that I've ever used.My problem is that bold text is too thick, but pretty much only in browsers, chrome and firefox.
The Sawasdee font family has a great bold but for one reason or another that is not what is rendering, instead it looks like the browsers are taking the regular, elegant Sawasdee font and making it two or three times as wide.
Is there a setting just to tell the system how to handle bold text?
Below is a link to an image of the linux mint forum where I think the text that is not bold looks close to perfect, but the text that is bold looks almost unreadable:
    http://imgur.com/owffN.png
Below is how the fonts look in the system and how firefox renders them:
    http://i.imgur.com/MXbuM.png
It seems to me that the problem is that the applications are making their own bold font instead of using the one available. I wonder if I could rename a file or alter a config line somewhere to correct that.
So far, I've added this to an /etc/fonts/local.conf file that I made using the header from font.conf but it did not help
    <match target="font">
        <test name="weight" compare="more">
            <const>medium</const>
        </test>
        <edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
            <bool>false</bool>
        </edit>
    </match>
I really appreciate any help I can get.  If there is more information that might be helpful, I am eager to provide it.

Sorry but we can give assistance for original Arch Linux only. Please ask on a Linux Mint forum for detailed help.
But there is quite some information about your issue in the Arch forums and the wiki. Some quick search should help.

  • OSX System Wide Font Size?

I just bought my first 27 inch iMac..
Although I'm lovin it, I do have it sitting at arms length away from me and am finding the font size vert small..
With this high res display the font is a bit tiny and am just wondering if its possible to change the system wide font size?
Ny eyesight is great but I'm finding that I need the computer right up to my face to be able to comfortable see the fonts..

    There are some suggestions here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17593815#17593815
including changing the screen resolution and the font size for folder and icons.
Another option not mentioned there is to enable the 'Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom' option in
     > System Preferences > Accessibility | Zoom
After that, you can hold down the 'control' key and 2-finger swipe to zoom the entire screen.

  • System wide font settings

I am a websdite designer / developer and I am noticing that I may have accidently hit a key combination that has changed my system wide font settings...
I have a co-worker, same hardware / software and my browsers render my code different. Same browser, same versions, etc.
It seems my fonts a slightly larger, etc.
Can someone please direct me toward the system settings to fix this? Ive checked my settings and have yet to come across anything that
seems like it has helped at all. Its every browser for me, safari, chrome, firefox, etc.
I have checked 4-5 other mac computers and all render properly.
    Thank you

    I found the issue.
The site I built is rendering RALEWAY from google fonts... but since i have Raleway installed in my fonts, in my font book, its using my computer to render the font rather than google fonts for some reason. I disabled my raleway font in font book and now it renders properly...

  • Google Chrome showing sites in Bold font (after deleting MS Office 2011)

    Hey guys,
Seen a few threads about this but i haven't been able to really find a solution for myself.
I deleted MS Office 2011 a few days ago and ever since Google Chrome has been showing a lot of websites in Bold font, i resolved all duplicates in my Font Book and still nothing.
    Thanks in advance

Office 2011 installs a bunch of fonts that conflict with those installed by OS X. Read section 3 of Font Management in OS X to see which to remove, and which to keep.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • System-wide blue to purple color switch bug

I've been having a very confusing and inconsistent color issue which has persisted for years on both a PowerBook G4 and my new MacBook Pro using Panther and Tiger respectively. The MacBook is only two weeks old and still has a very clean system.
Seemingly at random blue colors will switch to purple in random places in most apps. Restarting the computer used to solve the issue, but it no longer does - I am permanently stuck with a purple color scheme (screenshots further down).
    - The default unvisited link color in all apps has switched from blue to purple.
    - The finder icon has switched from blue to purple in both the dock and the command-tab switcher (but the icon is the correct color when viewed inside the CoreServices folder). All other blue dock icons are unaffected.
    - Some toolbar or sidebar images in most apps which were blue are now purple, but other blue icons have stayed blue.
I have screenshots just to show that I'm not imagining this. Mail and the Finder use the same drag-and-drop sidebar highlight color. However, Mail has now taken on a purple theme:
And here is the Finder icon as seen in the dock, and then as an alias in the Finder:
Here is what I have tried thus far (nothing has worked):
    - Logging out and in
    - Logging out and in while holding shift (safe login)
    - Restarting the computer
    - Restarting the computer while holding shift (safe boot)
    - Repairing permissions and restarting
    - Zapping the PRAM (command-option-p-r)
    - Creating a new user account and logging into it
    - Running daily, weekly, and monthly cron scripts using Onyx
    - Deleting all caches for applications, fonts, system, and kernel
    - Pulled everything out of the main Library (Macintosh HD/Library/), cleared caches, and restarted
From this I've concluded that it's probably a bug or corrupted file in the core system since safe boot, clean user accounts, and a bare library didn't fix the problem. The obvious solution would be to re-install the OS, but I'm afraid that the problem would just happen again since it has been occurring with multiple versions of the OS on two different computers.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I should add that this has been a slowly developing problem, one which is only getting worse. The first effect was a system-wide change in the default unvisited link color. Restarting the computer solved the problem whenever it would occur (about twice a day). The next to be affected was image colors, and once this happened for the first time, restarting the computer no longer fixed the problem.

  • Missing Fonts when fonts are activated on the system.

I created an Indesign CS6 document (334pg book) and used ITC Garamond Bold for the document subheads. This was done with a paragraph style. After editing the document I get a missing font warning for ITC Garamond Bold. The font is activated on the system using Suitcase Fusion 4. If I create a new document the font is available. Both documents open. One shows the font missing. On a Mac OSX 10.6.8. Any ideas on fixing this missing font error?

Why not obtain FontFingler or FontNuke and run these font cache burping utilities and see if the problem goes away? Is it installed in more than one place? Does one of your documents have a Document Fonts subfolder and the other doesn't? Did you maybe try to Export the afflicted document to IDML, and then turn around and re-open that file?

  • PLD - Bold font subtotals

    Hi.
Can someone please answer if it's possible to make the subtotals in printouts appear in bold font? I can manage the lines of type Text, because this is a seperate database field inside the PLD. But subtotals are not available in the same way.
To clarify my question: I want all the subtotals to appear in bold font when printing sales documents.
    Thanks and regards, Runar Wigestrand

    Hi Runer,
Yes this is possible, its a bit tricky though.
I am using the Sales Order Confirmation (system) template for 2005A so you should be able to follow the same steps.
Open up the layout and try these steps, all within the Repetitive Area.
Add a Variable field (Variable Number 157, Comment 'Row Type', this can be hidden if required and will display an 'S' if the line is a subtotal).  For me the unique id is Field_169.
Add two formula fields, firstly the formula will be Field_169=='S' this is Field_170 (untick Visible), secondly the other formula wil be Field_169!='S' this is Field_171 (untick Visible).
Now the field that displays the subtotal value is Field_025 which also shows the Total amount of the row.  At first i copied Field_025 and linked the new field to one of my formulas and the old field to the other one, this didn't work.  To get around this I added a new Variable field (Variable Number 299, Comment 'Subtotal Amount', make it bold and move it to where you require it.  Link this field to Field_169).  Link Field_025 to Field_170.
This should now work for you.  variable 299 is actually the Row Total in the document currency and i'm not sure why using the different variable works.  I hope this has resolved your issue.
    Regards,
    Adrian

  • Arial Narrow and Arial Narrow Bold Font issue

    Good afternoon,
We currently have Adobe Creative Suite 5 and the issue I'm having is with InDesign. Here's a description of the problem:
We've been using InDesign on Windows XP for some time and have not had any issues using the Arial Narrow or Arial Narrow Bold fonts. However, we recently purchased a Windows 7 PC and installed CS5 on it. Whenever the user on this new PC opens up an InDesign document, that was created on Windows XP w/ the mentioned fonts, an error comes up stating that the listed fonts (Arial Narrow and Arial Narrow Bold) are not available on the system and that substitute fonts will used. So then I have the option to replace the missing fonts with other fonts, which I am able to replace with the Arial Narrow and Arial Narrow Bold fonts that are already in the Windows 7 font folder. So it's almost like InDesign see's the fronts from XP and Windows 7 as two different things. I checked the version numbers on both fonts and they are the same (2.40).
Does anybody have any ideas? I've googled the issue and Adobe actually says that this is a Microsoft problem and is related to Office 2007 installing the Arial fonts with extra properties, wherein a hotfix is provided by Microsoft to resolve the issue. I've applied this hotfix and it does not do anything. I've also copied the fonts from the Windows XP machine and replaced the Windows 7 fonts with this, as well as vice versa, but this also does not resolve the issue.
Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!
    LMK

I found a solution for myself. Regenerate in ttf by defalt all 4 arial narrow fonts with Fontlab Studio without any changes to fonts info or structure. Then install them into system (Windows/Fonts). Clean old arial narrows files before. Then do search for adobefnt*.lst on system disk. Delete those files (only .lst not .db or any other). Great! Works perfectly in all adobe apps! Shows all names in arial family submenue.

  • [Solved] Gnome monospace bold font

For some reason my monospace bold font in gnome seems to be messed-up (see image below). It's starting to get really annoying and I'm not sure how to fix it. I've read through most of the font wiki material but I still can't figure it out. Does anyone have any idea how I can change it?

emphire wrote:Do you know if there's a way to change what fonts are returned by fc-match?
This is complicated by my unfamiliarity with Gnome.  Gnome has been known to have its own way with font configurations (I think due to pango).  I could never find the following information stated plainly enough for me to understand on first reading.  This is my attempt at clarity.  Any corrections are welcome.
The fc-match command shows which font an application will be given when it requests a particular font.  If an app should ask for 'monospace', fc-match will show the best match it can find after applying the system and user configuration rules.
The font is matched according to the rules in the configuration files: '~/.font.conf', '/etc/fonts/local.conf' (deprecated), and '/etc/fonts/conf.d'.
The font cache (the coded results of the applied rules appear in '~/.fontconfig/') is rebuilt when the user logs into X.  You can also force a rebuild with the command:
    $ fc-cache -f
If the file exists, it is safe to rename '~/.font.conf' to another filename and rebuild the font cache with the command given above.
If that doesn't help restore fonts to a sane state, rename '/etc/fonts/local.conf' (if it exists) to something else and rebuild the cache again.
The rules given in '/etc/fonts/conf.d/' should be symlinks to a larger list of rules in '/etc/fonts/conf.avail/'.  Check with 'ls -l' to make sure they are just symlinks.  The rules are applied for font substitution and display in reverse numerical order.  That is, rule 99-* is applied first and then rule 98-*.  The lower numbered rule is the rule that "wins" if there are any conflicts.
The easiest way to go back to Arch's default rules is to delete the symlinks in '/etc/fonts/conf.d/' and then reinstall the fontconfig package.  If you want to do it manually, these are the symlinks created using the latest fontconfig package:
    20-fix-globaladvance.conf
    20-unhint-small-vera.conf
    29-replace-bitmap-fonts.conf
    30-metric-aliases.conf
    30-urw-aliases.conf
    40-nonlatin.conf
    45-latin.conf
    49-sansserif.conf
    50-user.conf
    51-local.conf
    60-latin.conf
    65-fonts-persian.conf
    65-nonlatin.conf
    69-unifont.conf
    80-delicious.conf
    90-synthetic.conf
If you don't reinstall fontconfig, you will have to rebuild the font cache with the 'fc-cache -f' command.
Finally, go to the Gnome font selection tool and select some variation of the DejaVu fonts for each font face.  If this works, then make your preferred choices over DejaVu in Gnome.  I could easily be missing some configuration file for Gnome in these instructions.
The wiki contains much of this information.
