Bold fonts in many websites

Hi,
Since I removed Office 2011 and reset FontBook (booting into Safe Mode), many sites are displaying in bold fonts (google, facebook, cnn...).
It happens in Safari (but also in Chrome).
How could I get rid of this issue? Any idea?

FYI I had the same problem (bold fonts in many web sites). All my fonts checked out OK in Fontbook and FontDoctor. I could not find my Snow Leopard install disks, so I resorted to systematically moving fonts out of my /Library/Fonts folder.
After a very long binary search (remove half the fonts, reboot, check for issue, repeat) I finally narrowed on the problem font: Georgia Bold.ttf
*Take Georgia Bold.ttf out of your /Library/Fonts folder and the problem disappears.*
Why this happens? Well, all I've got is a theory. Georgia is a font developed by Microsoft that is supposed to be easier to read on-screen (a really bold version of Times basically). Some web sites design for Georgia, but if it isn't present they fail over to regular old Times Roman.
So if this Georgia font gets installed on your machine, you starting seeing a number of sites that have coded for it (for me it was Lifehacker.com) appear 'broken' – with really ugly bold text. Georgia displays ok on Windows, but on the mac it is really inelegant. See how it looks in different browsers/OS's here:

So really this font isn't 'broken' or corrupted, it's working just the was Microsoft and the site designer intended it to. This is why when you check for duplicate or corrupted fonts everything seems ok. The real problem is that neither Microsoft nor the site designers ever bothered to check and see how this franken-font displayed on a mac.
So how did this evil Microsoft font get on your system? For me it was Microsoft Office 2011. If you dig through the package contents Georgia is one of the numerous fonts it installs.
Long story short: like most things *it's Microsoft's fault*. Thank you very much for destroying my Sunday evening Mr. Ballmer (can't blame Gates anymore, he's out saving the world).
Hope this helps someone else. Just move/delete Georgia Bold.ttf from /Library/Fonts and you should see the difference when you open the sites in Safari.

Light (2)
Medium - Best for Flat Panel (3)
Strong (4)
If I set the command above to 1, 2 or 3 my fonts don't change at all and still look bold and horrible. If I set the command to "4" (Strong), do the usual log out and back in, then I get the correct looking fonts on the websites I had issues with BUT my system fonts and other websites now have a very soft, almost out of focus font, probably due to this being the Strong smoothing setting. Likewise if I set the command to "0" (turning font smoothing off) I get the correct looking fonts on the problematic websites but again system fonts look odd, not nice and smooth (due to font smoothing being turned off)
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can try next please? Could this be down to the resolution/DPI of the 13" MBP's screen?

Hey! I had exactly the same issue as you! Do you have an addon called WebSecurityKeeper installed into your Firefox, without your permission? Check your Addons list pls. I had this addon and when I uninstalled it, my fonts in Firefox returned to normal.
Its possibly a malicious addon. But I am not sure. I have no idea how it got installed my computer.

How can I prevent sites displaying in bold font in versions of FF later than 3.6?

Many sites (google, gmail, wikipedia to name a few) are appearing in bold font when they should not be. This started for me in FF4, and has persisted in FF5 and now FF6. I'm running Windows 7 x64.
I've seen many replies to questions about bold font problems telling people to reinstall, e.g. arial as the problem is corrupted fonts on their system. I've tried reinstalling several fonts (arial, verdana, tahoma, times new roman...) and it doesn't solve the problem. Also, if I reinstall FF3.6, the problem goes away, so it seems to be an issue with FF and not my machine.
I've also tried running FF6 in safe mode, with addons disabled, and restoring the default settings. None of this has helped.
I should add that I have another machine running FF6 with the same addons, but with Windows 7 x86 - all pages display correctly. Is this a known issue for FF4+ on 64-bit systems?

Thanks for replying. I'm using exactly the same profile as I did in 3.6, and reinstalling 3.6 does solve the problem. I'd rather use the latest version though.
I've just checked Tools > Options > Content > Advanced of the two machines side by side, and they're identical. The 32-bit one is fine, and the 64-bit one isn't.

Start by removing the inline styles from your HTML code. You've got quite a few of them.

Bold font in Labels?

I have declared this:
Font font = new Font("Times", Font.BOLD, 15);
But when i do this:
label1.setFont(Font.font);
The font does not appear in Bold Times font with a size of 15. The aim is that when the text in label1 changes, it should always be the same font, bold and size.
Ie. On first load, the text 'Welcome XYZ' appears in Panel1 - I want this in bold font. [In the game of Deal Or No Deal] when the banker makes an offer, the text changes to "XYZ, the banker offers you �abc" - but this should also be in Times, bold, size 15.
What am I doing wrong that is stopping this from working? I'm given a 'cannot find symbol' error, with the Symbol being 'Variable font'.

How can I combine one font with many styles to show up as one font? I have quite a few fonts, that instead of showing up as a single font with different font styles (bold, bolditalic, semibold, light....) each style shows up in the fonts dropdown menu as a separate font. Any way I can fix this?

So your saying if it wasn't set up that way be the font creator there is nothing I can do. That's a shame.
Most of the fonts that do this were free fonts, such as Walkway.
But I do have some fonts (hebrew fonts) that I purchased that do the same thing.

Are you zooming those pages. because that can cause Firefox to use a bold font if you zoom too much?
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

No you can change your wallpaper to make the font stand out more on your homepages and folders or you can adjustr the font size, bold and contrast here:
Settings > General > Accessibility
NOTE: Turning Bold text on will force your phone to reboot.

Google Chrome showing sites in Bold font (after deleting MS Office 2011)

Hey guys,
Seen a few threads about this but i haven't been able to really find a solution for myself.
I deleted MS Office 2011 a few days ago and ever since Google Chrome has been showing a lot of websites in Bold font, i resolved all duplicates in my Font Book and still nothing.

Office 2011 installs a bunch of fonts that conflict with those installed by OS X. Read section 3 of Font Management in OS X to see which to remove, and which to keep.

Italic bold fonts

I am using firefox 23.0.1, Windows 7.
When I go to mercurynews.com or sfgate.com and click on one of the articles, the text of the article displays in italics and bold font. The rest of the page looks fine.
I have already tried the Microsoft European Font Update.
Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you.

This can be a problem with the font that is used to display the text.
You can select this italic/bold text and use "Inspect Element" to open the built-in inspector.<br />
If you click the Fonts tab in the pane on the right then you can see which font is used.
You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).

How many websites can i host with a webCommerce plan?

I'm wondering how many websites I can host if I have a webCommerce plan? I see that it says 3 users, does that mean website essentially? I currently use Dreamhost and they allow me to host an extremely large number of websites for a low yearly price. I do want to be able to incorporate eCommece with Adobe Muse so the webCommerce sounds inticing but it's hard to justify without being able to host a wide varity of sites since the webCommerce plan is almost 5x's at much than Dreamhost.
If the answer is yes only 3 websites unless you pay more per site, then does that allow you to have sub-domains off of a website? For example if I had 3 sites total and one of them is www.bubslove.com - can I host www.party.bubslove.com without it taking up 1 user?

First off, aside from being a registrar, through its parent company New Dream Network, Dreamhost just offers hosting. A place on a server to store the website(s) you build from Scratch.

To conclude, the base of starting this comparison between Dreamhost and Business Catalyst is not justified. For whatever you would pay at Dreamhost, you'd only get storage. You'll add development & support costs To that. With BC's e-Commerce plan you get a complete business setup

I'm using the @font face to embed fonts on my site. Everytime I use a heading tag Firefox adds extra emphasis (making a bold font even bolder). How can I resolve this? The heading tag renders fine in Chrome/Safari.

It is always a good idea to reload and bypass the cache after you have made changes and uploaded new files.

I am having the same issue listed above on my new Mac Mini i just bought, I also contacted Express VPN support and got the same instructions with exception of the command to run in the utilities terminal. I tried the steps listed, and both commands (posted here, and sent to me directly by Express VPN support), and still unable to connect on my Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.2, but I am able to connect on my iPad and my MacBook which is running Mac OS X 10.6.8. Usually Express VPN is spot on with their customer support, but this is taking longer to get resolved. Here is the steps sent to me

take for example facebook & ebay, the fonts have changed to a distorted block type font, very un-readable, Only after I installed adobe CC, this took place...

I have tried to fix it by tinkering with some settings in google chrome but had no luck!

Unless a web page uses a “web font” that it supplies itself, web pages typically provide a list of fonts, in priority order, of fonts to be used to render text. Typically, this list of fonts represents “system fonts” of MacOS, Windows, iOS, and Android - fonts that can be counted on being installed. Helvetica Neue is a MacOS system font that is not typically found on Windows systems. And even if a user licenses recent versions of Helvetica Neue OpenType fonts and installs same on Windows systems, they are in the “Helvetica Neue Std” family which would not match “Helvetica Neue” which is native to MacOS. Thus, I suspect that the Helvetica Neue you have installed on Windows is an older font offering.
There are three issues here:
The first is that web pages provide a priority list for font usage. I suspect that the web pages you are seeing Helvetica Neue actually used on your system are requesting fonts in the order of Helvetica Neue and then Arial. The typical MacOS system would display the content with Helvetica Neue and the typical Windows system would display the content with Arial. Since you have Helvetica Neue on your system, you are getting rendering similar to what a MacOS system would have.
The second issue is that there is no way to force a web page to reverse the order of priority of the fonts it lists.
And finally, the third issue is that there is no way to hide a font selectively by application.
The only way you can avoid Helvetica Neue being used on web pages preferring Helvetica Neue to let's say Arial or any other font on its list for particular text rendering is to uninstall Helvetica Neue.
That having been said, other than perhaps personal type design preferences, are there any other issues with regards to use of Helvetica Neue for display of these web pages?
