Bondi Rev B monitor flicker

Hey Ron, Strider, dreed2, schadow---long time. I'm shep from the previous forum days.
I turned on my old Bondi Rev B this morning, went about had coffee, shower, etc. Went back to it and I thought well maybe I didn't turn it on. So hit thhe power button again, got the chime and everything and again went and did other stuff. Came back to it later and again nothing. It was like it was off.
I knew I turned it on this time, nonetheless I tried the power buttton again. No response at all this time. I unplugged it for about five minutes, replugged it and waited in front of it this time. The chime sounded and I watched it start up pretty much normally. I say pretty much because the monitor acted goofy.
When it was finally booted, the monitor would randomly "flicker" some, but mainly would distort. For example, it would get skinnier side-to-side, etc. Finally afer being on for about five minutes, it went out and I didn't hear the fan(?)/convection cooling (whatever).
While it was on I was able to open folders, etc. like normal. Rather than mess with it anymore, I have it unplugged right now.
I'm still not terribly great when it comes to the technical side of these things. I did talk to my local Apple Store on the phone, he said I think that it's possibly the video/audio power board(?). Does that sound right? Could it be the video card? Power supply? He also said they (Apple) no longer has any parts for computers of this vintage.
I still love and use the Rev B forr a lot of stuff so hopefully, I'm not totally out of luck here.
As always, thanks in advance.

PPC7410 & dreed2,
Thanks for the replies.
I won't go into all (3 or 4) of the calls that I made and input I received. I was going get a firewire enclosure and transfer things that haven't been transferred or saved previously to the G5 iMac---that's still an option.
But right now my plan is to bring it to a (non-authorized) repair place the next town over. The guy seemed pretty straight-forward and was really helpful. Anyway, he has a couple old Grape iMacs that he is selling for $100 each---only about $30-40 more than the firewire enclosure. He said he'd do the swap out of my 40G HD to one of those while I wait and even offer a 30 day warranty!
So unless one of y'all can convince me that I'd be better off getting the firewire enclosure, I'll bring it in on Monday and see what we can do. If I indeed end up with one of thhe Grape models, maybe I'll be visiting here more often again.
I sure will miss the Bondi. It was the first computer I ever worked on, much less owned.
Thanks again!

  • Adding iMac Bondi Rev B to AirPort network

Ok, I have an AirPort network set up at my house that uses an AirPort Extreme (g) Base Station (AEBS) to connect to the internet. I can use that connection by using wifi connections from my iMac G4 (10.3.9), iMac G5 (10.4.10), PowerBook (10.4.10), and iPhone. I currently have to use AOL dial-up to connect the Bondi Rev B (9.1.x) to the internet since it is not AirPort capable. For file transfer I have a cat5 crossover cable connecting the Rev B iMac to the G4 iMac.
So can I use either another AEBS or an Airport Express (AE) connected to the Rev B ethernet port to connect to my AirPort network. How would I have to configure the AEBS/AE to work with 9.1?

You should be able to use an Airport Express in "WDS Remote" mode. I have an Airport Exreme (n), and I repurposed my Airport Express in the living-room to connect my TiVo to the network. It works great; the TiVo just sees it as a wired Ethernet connection. I think your old iMac would also see it as a wired Ethernet connection.
How would I have to configure the AEBS/AE to work with 9.1?
You wouldn't. You configure them using one of your Mac OS X Macs.
You could connect the Bondi iMac directly to the Airport base station by Ethernet (wired), but you would have considered that already, so I'm assuming the two are not conveniently located to allow a wired connection.
Here's something you might try instead, since you have several other Macs, and one of them is already connected to the Bondi iMac via Ethernet. On the Mac OS X Mac, go to System Preferences > Sharing pane > Internet tab. Since that Mac is connected to the Internet via wireless, you should be able to share its built-in Ethernet port. So it would be "share your connection from Airport to computers using Built-in Ethernet." I think Mac OS 9 on the Bondi would see it as a regular wired connection. You have everything you need, so give it a try if the result will meet your needs.
The other option is to get a USB wireless adapter. Unfortunately, I think you mentioned that your Bondi iMac has Mac OS 9.1, so that would not work. I don't know of any USB wireless adapters with Mac OS 9 drivers. There are, however, Ethernet wireless adapters. They would work similarly to the Airport Express, but may be less expensive. Mac OS 9 on the Bondi should see it as a regular wired connection. I haven't tried any (other than the Airport Express) so can't give a recommendation for brand and model.
Thanks for the info. I have a second AEBS(g) that I picked up on closeout after the 802.11n models came out. But I had tried using my original one years ago just for file transfer and I couldn't get it to work. I'll try the internet sharing route; though I think I tried it before. Regarding the AirPort Express, I believe it says OS X only but that must for configuration since you have it working with your Tivo. I might be able to use the second AEBS as a Remote.

  • External Monitor flicker... HELP !!!

iMac9,1 with mini DisplayPort to VGA external LG-W2242 in extended screen model.
Used to work well; recently flicker at 1680x1050.
This problem happens only at 1680x1050, and it is now at 1440x900 and is working.
But, the resolution is not the monitor optimum resolution at 1680x1050.
Not keen with SwitchresX or DVI solution.
Grey unselectable at 56 or 75Hz, how to activate this selection?
    Or any other  alternative solution?
    Thanks

Finally, I did more research and confirm that the problem is not related to Hardware.
It does not matter if you have Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter or VGA Adapter.
I had in other thread, and understand that SwitchResX can solved this problem.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2387462
It has to be a OS problem, I tried it today with SwitchResX; and confirm that it can work with 1680x1050.

Sadly... Mac OS X10.6.8 brings back some of the older external montior flicking problem.
Apple technician... if there a patch fix, then, to purchase third party software to patch the OS problem??

  • XG270HU freesync monitor flicker and graphical artifacts at 100,120, and 144Hz

Hello, just picked up this monitor from Newegg and a bit bummed. looks like I might have a defective monitor, anytime I switch to the higher refresh rates (100,120, 144Hz) I get audiable pops and a horizonal line checkboard artifacts on the screen at random times. I bought this monitor for Freesync gaming so this is a must for me to get working. At 60Hz I do not get any issues only 100hz or higher. I tried testing with and without crossfire and and freesync enabled and still the same issue. Here are my system specs:I7-3820Intel DX79SR motherboard3 x 290x powercolor 290x Radeons (water cooled version) AMD Drivers tested:15.4.1 beta15.4 beta14.12 Omega official

I am having a similar issue after buying the Acer XG270HU for the FreeSync support.  I am seeing random flickering every few seconds if the monitor runs at anything higher than 60hz (freesync on, crossfire disabled). I created a short video showing what is happening, if you click at 1:15 seconds you can see the flicker twice, just keep looping the video.  Its not always in the same part of the screen and its really random but consistent.  It does not happen when I set the display to 60hz, it starts happening (even on the desktop) if the display is set to 120hz or 144hz or freesync is dynamically changing it over 60hz.  The first part of the video I zoom into show you that freesync is enabled noting the Hz changing dynamically. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfRVFiH6Cw4 HardwareAcer XG270HUAMD R9 290X (Catalyst 15.5 Beta)Using Display Port 1.2 cable that came with the Acer Is this something I need to send this monitor in for service/replacement? Its brand new.

  • InDesign CS3 and monitor flicker

I have already read this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/326464 and that did not come up with any useful pointers.
I have seen a problem occur on a couple of designers Macs (OS 10.4.11, InDesign 5.0.4) where the monitor seams to flicker slightly whenever they are using InDesign. I have launched the other CS Suite applications and swapped betweent them but the problem only ever occurs when InDesign is the active application.
More specically, the flickering only effects any windows (or usually just the desktop image/colour) that are behind InDesign.

The drivers are built into the actual OS so driver updates usually install as part of the OS updates. There were no more updaes to 10.4 after 10.4.11, before Apple moved on to 10.5 so that is not an option.
Thank you for your answer though.

  • G580 (20150). Monitor - FLICKER. Help me pls!

Hi to all! Sorry from my English I have lenovo g580 (20150) and Windows 8 x64. Monitor -> flickers! This is very bad, im dont work ;-( help me pls!! Maybe im need driver or special custom setting?? i have full drivers from lenovo site.
Moderator Note; please do not duplicate threads in multiple boards as it will split the discussion and is also unfair to other users.  Duplicate posts have been removed along with unnecessary post bump.
Verry sorry. ---------------------------------------------- update: my problem ->>> Flicker like old monitors (60 Hz mode). Maybe im dont have 60 hz? in settings set 60 hz. im donwloading powerstrip and view. 59 hz! This is normal? maybe i need driver for display? or i need special system setting? help..............

I heard there is a nvidia driver installation conflict on Win8 because of windows update.
    Try this:
1). Disable windows Auto-Update and disconnect your internet connection.
2). Reinstall the geforce driver with Custom(Advanced) and checklist the Clean install
PS: You can use the latest optimus driver from lenovo or from nvidia site http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

  • Monitors flicker

The monitors on my new Power Mac flicker off/on periodically. Anyone know what the problem could be?
Using the new Power Mac 3.5 6-Core with 16 Gigs memory, and have two Apple Thunderbolt displays.

I do have sound turned on... and it's not associated with that. It's very sporadic, and sometimes happens to one monitor, sometimes both. Sometimes it happens twice in a row really quick, sometimes within 10 minutes of each other. Otherwise, its only one every few hours that I notice.
It feels like a bug, not a notification.

  • IMac, external monitor flicker/blink blue

I have an external monitor hooked up to my iMac and I have had no problems until today. It's the mini-DVI to VGA style connector.
During the day, I jarred my desk with my knee. The iMac and external monitor both blinked about four times, becoming blue like in the startup process. The view on the external monitor also went fuzzy for a second. No CPU functions appear to have been affected.
I shut down, checked all the cable connections, and restarted. The problem seemed to be resolved - until later when I was using the computer, and the same thing happened twice in about two minutes. This time the desk hadn't moved at all. Again, no CPU functions appear to have been affected.
In the Console, I see these messages at the time of the events:
    <Error>: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSGetDisplayBounds (display 3e41b5b9)
    kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSGetCurrentDisplayMode
    kernel
EDID does not contain Extended EDID, not valid for audio
A search seems to indicate that it may be cable-related, which is the best-case scenario, and I'm hoping it's not the graphics card or logic board.
Can anything be done to stop this from reoccurring?

Now it appears the problem has gotten worse. Much worse.
I've had the external monitor disconnected for five days now. I tried to plug it back in and the computer did not recognize it AT ALL. Nothing showed up on the display.
In addition, or however, the mouse movement on the iMac itself became very, very unresponsive.
Once I disconnected the monitor, everything on the iMac was functioning normally.
Have I messed something up inside the iMac?

  • External monitor flicker with ibook G3

I plugged in an external monitor into my iBook G3. At the highest resolution it flickers/ shakes. Is there anything I can do to resolve this?
    Thanks,
    Jacob

Is the monitor set at the same resolution as the iBook?

  • Sanyo LCD TV as 2nd Monitor flicks to black & pops

    Hey All,
2.66 Mac Pro running Mavericks 10.9. I plugged in my Sanyo DP42849 via HDMI using a(n admittedly third party) Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter dongle. I should mention, I've never attempted to use this TV as a 2nd monitor, but I have used the same dongle and a Panasonic 1080p 42" tv with no issue (albeit not on Mavericks)
When I plug it in, if it recognizes the signal at all, it alternates between the desktop background for anywhere from 0-4 seconds, and black for 0-5 seconds. Inconsistently, sometimes there will be a signal pop coming from the TV.
Is this a TV issue? A Mavericks issue? A dongle issue? A Graphics Card issue? What's going on here?
I have tested 2 different HDMI cables (same result), but I only own one dongle.
When I go to the displays menu, refresh rate is greyed out, and changing the resolution does nothing towards stabilizing the signal on the TV.
    Thanks for your help!!

Well the lcd that I provided the link for would be the production monitor to hopefully see how a television would view the finished product. I've got my eye on something like the Acer AL1916W - 19" LCD WideScreen for my widescreen #2 monitor. *just in case I confused anyone. As you suggested though, I will be researching more for the # monitor. Thanks again.

  • Why does my external monitor flicker

My Samsung monitor wiggles sporadically. I have adjusted the timing and color on the monitor. Ran updates, restarted, unplugged, reversed the cable.  Any thoughts?

I have the same problem with my MacBook Retina 13... my LG monitor loose signal. Please help!

  • Why is Adobe CEF Helper.exe stoping Autodesk Revit Worksharing monitor from starting

    Hi,
My worksharing monitor wouldn't show. It was there in my tasks and processus manager, but not visible.
Then I looked up Adobe CEF Helper.exe and found that is was related to Adobe Creative Cloud I had installed to go with my Adobe Captivate licence.
So I uninstalled Adobe Creative Cloud and have no more problems... any ideas on how they can coexist?
    Thanks,

  • Mac Pro monitor keeps flicking off then on.

I am currently having a problem with my monitor flicking off then on. Mainly while gamming but other times as well. Sort of looks like the energy saver is trying to put my monitor to sleep. Takes about a second for it to come back but is very annoying. several times after it comes back the current image on screen turns into a jigsaw with the pieces mixed up. i am currently using:
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    Display Type:          LCD
      Resolution:          1920 x 1200
      Pixel Depth:          32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
      Display Serial Number:          2A92715H0K0
The graphics card is new and i had this problem before with the apple card installed so know its not that.
I actually had this problem not long after i bought the computer from next byte but they could not replicate the problem so gave me the computer back.
Flicked off then on as i was typing this. Only programs that are running are safari and itunes.

System preferences > Desktop and ScreenSaver > Screensaver pane > ( Hot Corners) ...
... make certain all controls are set to Minus, to preclude accidental movement of the mouse in to a Hot Corner from activating the ScreenSaver and thereby momentarily blanking the screen.

  • Very weird monitor problem, betcha can't solve this one.

OK I have a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz with 4GB of Ram, it's fully up to date with Lion, and is connected to a Formac W2300-1U 23 inch TFT Monitor (DVI, VGA, 1920 x1080, 1000:1, 5ms, 400cd/m²) through a HDMI to Mini port adaptor.
Now, the problem is the monitor flicks off, then on, at first I thought it was just randomly, but today I isolated the problem to something specific that make it happen. When I open the preference panel, and click on 'Trackpad' as soon as the video demo starts to play the monitor switches off then on.
It's totally weird, what on earth could be causing this? Any ideas?

ok well i have no idea what happened. i started out again with a fresh installation of JBoss, and it worked. no clue as to what was wrong. musta been some JAR that was out of place or something.
    thank you for your help!

  • External monitor issues with new OS

Since switching to the new OS Lion I can't get my external monitor to work through my Toshiba docking station.  It used to work??

I have to use an external monitor with my macbook pro because the screen stopped working a couple months ago. I think the problem with the screen is just a loose connection for the light source because the computer works fine otherwise.  The repair people in town say that it's a bad logic board which will cost 700 euros to fix so I've been using it closed with the monitor and a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad.  I installed 10.9.2 the other day because I had been using 10.6.8 and there was some software I wanted to use but it needed 10.7 or later. I just assumed 10.9 was safe or better than 10.7 or 10.8 and I didn't do any research or even try to buy or DL them because the links on the apple site led me to 10.9 and I just blindly followed.  So NOW when I open the lid to my macbook pro, the menu at the top of the monitor goes gray and the monitor flicks off for a second, and when it comes back all the running applications have vanished from the desktop, (all the open windows) and I can't type, scroll, mouse.  When I close the lid it works ok, but I really like the isight camera and I think the microphone is better than the one on my external camera, so it was nice to still be able to use them.
I chatted with someone at apple for a while and he told me to erase my HD and install it again. He said the problems were because I installed it on top of an old OS and that a fresh install will fix all the problems.  I have an empty partition on my mbp and I'm about to try to install on that drive and see if it makes a difference, but I don't totally trust that guy.  I read the transcript of the chat and he gave me a lot of conflicting info.  Does anyone know if it makes a difference to install os 10.9.2 on a totally blank drive, or will the problems on the other partition corrupt everything else?
