Boneheaded Install Leads to "Disk Error" Can it be fixed?

I installed windows following the instructions (sort of) but missed the note indicating that I should "format the partition using the NTFS file system." So now I get the infamous (based on the number of related posts I've seen) "Disk Error" message Is there any way I can "unformat" my partition or did I just throw away 25GB of my hard drive?
Note: unlike some others, I have no trouble starting up the OS side of the house.

Use the convert fs=ntfs (check on syntax and spelling)
I think it is safer to keep it NTFS. If you need to write to NTFS, use MacFUSE but be aware that it can or use to interfere with the OS X Startup Disk control panel even recognizing and showing "Windows" entry to change default.
Use WinClone in OS X to backup if you think you need to or want to restore an image later.

I have an iShuffle 512MB (purchase OUT2005), a mini iPod 6GB (purchase SET2005) and a PC running Windows XP SP2 (ADM Athlon XP 2600, HD 120GB, 512MB RAM, 6 USB 2.0).
My mini iPod 6GB (miP6) works correctly with iTunes 5 or 6, with its original factory software and settings and now with iPod update October 2005. I dont know if everything started when I first connected them two at the same time but they were working fine in the beginning.
One day my iShuffle, connected to my PC USB and transferring music from iTunes, , started to turn off and turn on, that is, iTunes showed it connected and then disconnected even I wasnt touching it. When it came back in iTunes I started to try to transfer music to it and this time it came off, and then came back without that music I tried to transfer in. This situation didnt go better even when I try to change my iPod to the other five USB ports, neither in my Notebook (PC WinXP SP2). I have reinstalled iPod with the original CD software, reinstalled iTunes and all the things I read at this forum. The situation was going worse until now, I dont know why, I cant use it anymore. The current situation, after all I did and I will explain what was - is:
1) When I connect it to a USB in my PC or Notebook, windows recognize it as a mass storage device and iTunes dont start automatically.
2) I go to windows explorer and there it is, Drive E: removable disk, but
3) But it looks like a Drive, with no disk in it. Its a kind of a CD-ROM drive with NO CD inside it. This way, I cant format it because I cant format a drive, just a disk, even partition it.
4) When I connect it to other PCs (winXP), with no iPod software installed, the systems first recognize it as Apple iPod and then as USB Mass Storage device, but the same way at my PC: OKB.
5) When I try to run iPod Updater I receive most of the times this message: Cant mount it. Some times it recognizes it as an iPod but I receive the message, during the restoring original software process, Firmware update failure. Disk write error, as you can see here: http://www.ivan.med.br/ishuffle.jpg.
6) So, to try to use Updater, at this time, is out of question. If there is anyway to save it, I think it must be through other software or adjustment, I dont know. I will show you a brief of what I have done until now:
Windows-try
- Current updater. Reinstalled old updater and run too. Reinstalled iTunes and all this stuff.
- Changed USB connection and reinstall USB drives.
- Installed iShuffle at another machine the same way described in iShuffle Manual.
- Tried to format it using windows explorer format tool and other no-windows native tools.
- Used partition magic and other tool to try to build anything in it.
- Used Click Administrative Tools, double-clicked Computer Management, and then clicked Disk Management in the left pane. Nothing appeared. When I connect my miP6 it is there, and everything works fine. Just remember.
- Used Windows tools (CMD tools) as DiskPart and MountVol. Nothing.
DOS-Try
- I used a bootable win98 formatted floppy disk, with USB ASPI support, and the system recognized the two USB devices I have connected that time: my Apple DEAD iShuffle and my Pendrive. But it could not assign a letter to iSuffle device, only for the pendrive. Ive used DUSE software too and the same answer, even with an instruction INT13 that allow me to use Fdisk. But even Fdisk could not recognize the iPod as a Disk.

Same problem in the US...after 1 week of use, hit the reverse button while playing and it stopped, never to resume. Tried the latest software updater for both the ipod and itunes, and received the Ipod Service and Can't Mount Errors. After multiple attempts, all I get is the updater screen stating Initializing.. Additionally, when I tried to reinstall, it stated that the ipod needed to be formatted, yet I received a message that the ipod couldn't communicate. Seems like too many people are having the same issue!

You got ripped off. You bought a hacked/jailbroken phone. That's what error 1015 means. Return it and get your money back if possible and buy a phone from a legitimate source.
Discussing jailbroken / hacked phones is forbidden by the terms of service. Jailbreaking / hacking voids any warranty and forfeits your right to support here or from Apple. You can not get help here.

Can't install window xp (disk error)

i want to install my window. but after i install it and it say disk error and tell me to press any key to restart.But i can't press any key,the keyboard is frozen.
what should i do.any advice?

1) The installation works fine on a separate internal empty disk drive. Just insert a SATA drive format it -Mac OS Extended (Journaled)- partition it with Boot Camp and install windows xp pro w/sp2 - OEM. It works. Windows evidently needs lots of uncluttered space with no competition. The more disk space it has the better this works. Obviously you need to have a computer that will accept more than one disk drive like a Mac Pro.
2) The answer I am looking for, however, is how to successfully install windows xp on a partition of the main hard drive that is the Boot drive for OSX.
3) There are two softwares on Version Tracker (Paragon NTFS 7.0.2 & NTFS-3G 2009.4.4) that can format the drive in NTFS but I have had no success in making the Windows start up after installing on the NTFS formatted partition.
4) The answer needs to be either a utility that creates the right atmosphere for windows much like Parallels and VMWare do or a way to enter a couple lines of code that would direct windows to reformat the Boot Camp Partition in NTFS rather than immediately loading windows onto a FAT32 drive that will not boot. I'm not smart enough to create either of these. ----HELP----
5) I am disappointed that Apple was not more specific in their "Boot Camp Setup and Installation Guide" by telling the user what versions of Windows will not work. I have one piece of software that has never been written for an Apple computer in the last ten years or longer and it is not going to happen in the foreseeable future so I need to run windows. ---Come on Apple solve the problem.----

Adobe photoshop lightroom won't install on my Mac - error can not open file

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom4 will not install on my Mac. "Error can not open file" when trying to open will installer. If I cannot get it to work I would like to return product.

What version of Mac OS are you using? What is the exact name of the file which you are double clicking on? If you right click on the file and select Get Info what does it state under the Open With section?

Can't install newest reader. Error: "Can't retrieve essential parameter"

I get this error: Can't retrieve essential parameter (12250.305.770).
Then the installation just hangs at 66% completion and nothing more happens. Win XP, latest patches, IE 7.

If possible, temporarily disable your AntiVirus/Windows Smartscreen and run it. You can also boot into Safe mode with networking, download and run it.
Virus scan of the file showing it's clean. Flagged by Symantec/Norton as being non popular. Though not on this list Windows 8+ Smartscreen will also tend to block the download if Smartscreen is enabled (system-wide)

Disk error - can't repair

Hi,
When I startup my Imac it takes forever to get up and running. I sit and wait for the spotlight icon and the other icons at the right top of the screen to open up. When they are present I can begin working, but it takes approximately 10 minutes.
I tried a few times to run the disk-repair app. but I get a weird message that I can't understand. This is what it says ( please note - this is a translation from Danish, so bear with me )

Try to get your hands on a program called DiskWarrior.

If the problem is not totally hardware it should get you back going.
If it is hardware it may help you get going again so to archive important files before replacing faulty equipment.(I had some problems with a ALS iMac that DiskWarrior helped provide time to archive before computer retired.)

Hello - tried to upgrade to Lion (software all up to date) could not carry out as disk corrupt - tried to fix using disk utility, no luck, tried through install discs, noluck, screen went grey, went through all the troubleshooting steps advised - could get hard drive button up but wouldn't launch - took the last troubleshooting step (before wiping hard drive) and transferred data to MacBook Pro - all fine except for iPhotos - comes up as "locked volume" - have been through all the trouble shooting steps to all read/write access - file info says I have read/write access- any ideas - otherwise I have lost a bucket load of photos :-(

Disk error - How do I fix this?

I was running Onyx, and while verifying the HDD, it told me I had an error on the startup disk and needed to run Disk Utility off of the CD to fix it. I ran the utility while in OSX (not the CD) and it says this:
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Volume needs repair
I do not want to mess anything up. I have heard the Disk Utility on the CD/DvD is either old or has problems. SO i just need to know for sure how to fix this.

As long as it is a MacBook Pro labelled DVD analyzing a MacBook Pro, Disk Utility should be fine as far as analyzing basic directory structure issues with the Repair Disk and Verify Disk functions. I say basic, because Alsoft Disk Warrior when it repairs the disk directory is much more thorough in its efforts to construct a brand new directory to replace one which is damaged than Disk Utility or fsck. Regardless of the method used, directory damage can have the same symptoms as a dying hard drive. Even a modern MacBook Pro is not immune from its drive dying quickly. And since repairing the directory is a much more invasive routine than pure data recovery, I only recommend fixing the directory on a machine that has been backed up, or you have at least attempted a data recovery with Prosoft Data Rescue.

My iPod won't sync music due to a disk error, how do I fix this?

I just got a new iPod 4G and it won't sync any of my music or apps. I really don't need anything else on my iPod so I have everything else unchecked. I have tried a system restore and to reset all settings but nothing works. I also have tried deleting the Photo cache folder and that didn't help either. I am going on a trip in less then a week and I would really like my iPod to be working for that trip. Please help!! Thank you in advance.

I just got off the phone with senior level support at apple. There are two things she had me do to fix this problem.
1. Uninstall itunes and then re-install version 10.7 from the apple website here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/
2. Then go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl837, this will take you to the Quick-time version 7.7.3 for Windows page, download & install this version. You will need to reboot after this install and once you have finished you should have no problems opening Itunes.

Rapidwiz input error, can it be fixed w/out a re-run?

- doing rel12 upgrade. made an error on rapidwiz input.
- some services on the apps-primary and app-additional should have been disabled.
- rapidwiz has completed the "create upgrade file system" on the "apps-primary" node.
- Is there a way to change the services on the "apps-primary" not to start specific services?

In Oracle Applications Manager, click on the Auto Config link, then oa_services. Disable any of the enabled services you do not want to run and run autoconfig on that node.

Disk error when installing

i downloaded os x mavericks cant install, i get disk error that i have go to disk utility and fix error, i have done this and now it says errors cant be fixed.cant use pc at all until i can fix it

Then, you need something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or Drive Genius. Post the exact error message and we should be able to point you in the right direction.

Disk error that I can't repair despite logical steps

1. I ran Disk Utility within OSX and detected a disk error but the option to repair was grayed out
2. I ran my back up system to ensure I have an up-to-date clone on my LaCie external HD
3. I booted Norton Utilities from CD which couldn't repair the error
4. I ran Apple Hardware Extended test which said there were no hardware problems
5. I began wondering if it was a software issue rather than a hardware one...
6. I booted Disk Utility from my Tiger Install DVD which also detected a disk error but could not fix it
7. Thinking that reinstalling Tiger might do the trick, I tried to 'Archive and Install' Mac OS X Tiger from the DVD twice, but each time it was unable to complete the install and asked me to start over again

I am working quite intensively with iMovie at the moment, which crawls on my 3 year old 1 GHz PowerBook. One file has grown to a whopping 18 GB in size. Could this be part of the problem? I performed permissions repair, disk verification and defrag successfully last week before starting on my iMovie project, so the system was pretty well optimised, I thought.

Thanks, Miriam. I regularly run Utilities to ensure my system stays in good condition. Especially as I work with images a lot and sometimes - like now - with video. So, it was routine maintenance I guess. However, some applications have been a little slow to open or struggled to open files recently as well.
Regarding Disk Warrior etc, being an individual rather than a corporate user, obviously I'd rather avoid spending the money unless I absolutely have to. In addition, being in UK, it may take time for the disk to arrive and I don't think my nearest Apple Store stocks Disk Warrior - it's not on the UK online store anyhow (strangely). TechTool Pro is more expensive still. Sorry if I sound stingy, I just am being careful with my money. If I need to buy Disk Warrior, of course I will.

Since the Apple Hardware Extended test indicated no hardware faults, am I right to think it is probably more to do with software? Or should I be concerned about my hard disk or other hardware?

Hard disk error on Toshiba Satellite A505 56980

Hello,
Windows keeps bringing up a notification that the hard disk on my Toshiba laptop(A505 56980) has errors. It recommends for me to get hardware technical support to determine if the disk can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
My disk name is TOSHIBA MK5055GSX and I have only one volume C:\ drive.
I am running my antivirus scan just to make sure I don't have any active viruses or trojans damaging my hard drive. My computer freezes for a few seconds on and off. Not sure if this is related to the hard disk error.
I have backed up all my info and also created system recovery disk. I also have the recovery disks from when I got the laptop.
My question is how do I go about diagnosing the hard disk error and geting it fixed? What is the warranty for hard disks? I bought this laptop beginning of last year.
I appreciate any help I can get to resolve this problem.

Restart your system, when you see the Toshiba logo start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until you enter the Advanced Boot Options Menu, choose 'Repair Your Computer'.
This should take you to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRe)
Select 'Command Prompt', and type in this command, hit the 'Enter' key, and restart your computer:
chkdsk c: /r
This will check your hard drive, try to recover any corrupted files/data it can, and repair any problems it can. It takes a while to run anyway. But, if there are problems with your hard drive, it could take many hours. Just keep checking back, it will give a report as it goes, and when it's finished.
