Bonjour not working

Hi everyone,
I hope someone out there can shed some light on this problem: I have a G4 AGP with an upgraded OW Computing processor running at 1GHz. I had never needed to utilize Bonjour until I recently purchased a new printer that hooks up via Bonjour (not Appletalk). I cannot get the computer to see the printer either via Bonjour, or via the printer's static IP address. I was running 10.4.11, and everything seems to work BUT Bonjour. Networking with other computers was fine, internet access was fine, email was fine. My computer and the printer are hardwired to a Belkin router.
I am at my wit's end trying to figure this one out. I even wiped my drive, and reinstalled 10.4, but to no avail. The 2 laptops I also have (running 10.4.11) does not seem to have any problems connecting to the printer via Bonjour. I even tried changing ethernet cables, and moving to different ports on the router. Any ideas on what I can try at this point?

Thanks for the reply, but no, I did a FRESH system install, no printer sharing. I also tried to see if Bonjour is working by showing Bonjour in the Safari bookmarks, but still no response. Did it to the laptop, and the printer shows in the bookmark without a problem. Not sure what is going on. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why is bonjour not working?

I have been able to run iTunes on my laptop, which runs Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit edition, just fine and sync my iPhone 3g without any problems . but since at least February 1 iTunes has been telling me that Bonjour has been disabled (I found this out under the sharing tab in preferences), and so I haven't been able to sync anything on my iPhone with iTunes. When I checked under services it says that Bonjour was started and running. So i stopped and restarted the service but that didn't help. I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes (20 times in fact) but that didn't work. I tried installing only Bonjour but that didn't work either. I've also tried installing an older version of iTunes and updating my iPhone on a friends laptop but neither helped. So right now only my laptop identifies my iPhone. Is there anything in Windows 7 that could possibly make Bonjour not work properly?

but since at least February 1 iTunes has been telling me that Bonjour has been disabled (I found this out under the sharing tab in preferences), and so I haven't been able to sync anything on my iPhone with iTunes.
What security software do you have installed on that PC, Hi? (Firewall, antivirus, antispyware?)
Even if it is not currently installed now, has a Symantec security product like Norton *ever been* installed on the PC?

  • Bonjour not working in 64-bit OS's (Windows)

I am writing an app that finds all the printers on a network so I can install the correct printer. I can do this fine in any Windows 32-bit OS (XP-Windows 7rc). However, when I try in any 64-bit OS it does not work. My call to DNSServiceBrowse() returns BadParam. I do the generic call:
    err = DNSServiceBrowse( &client,
    0,
    0,
    "printer.tcp.",
    NULL,
    browseReply,
    NULL );
    client is declared as:
    static DNSServiceRef client = NULL;
If I compile the mDNSResponder.exe provided by developer.apple.com it works fine. Also, dns-sd.exe allows me to browse for the printers on the network. So what is wrong with my call? Why does it work in 32-bit and nto 64? Do you have to define client differently in 64-bit?
    Thanks for the help.
(NOTE: I DO have the 64-bit version of Bonjour installed on the OS).

64 bit bonjour works on my Vista x64 without a problem. I had to make sure Bonjour services were started in services manager. I had to set Bonjour to Automatic load and start.

  • BonJour not working WLC5508, I tried other forums instructions

Hi All, I have the attached diagram and I followed the instructions from another posts / forum cases and the Apple TV is still not working.
    My questions are:
1.-The WLC controller and AP must be in the same subnet?. This is not my case, the AP 3500 is operating in a remote location and I have a centralized WLC 5508.
    2.- I already configured the Controller --- > General --- > Broadcast forwarding (enable) + AP Multicast Mode (Multicast / IP: 239.20.226.197).
3.-I already configured the Controller --- > Multicast ---- > Enable Global Multicast Mode (selected) + Enable IGMP Snooping (selected) + Enable MLD Snooping (selected). Please see the attachment.
4.-Do I have to configure something in the Mobility Management --- > Multicast Messaging --- > (Enable Multicast Messaging + Local Group Multicast IP Address) ?????
The  Apple TV Device and Ipad are authenticated in the ISE using certificates with no issues and both got IP's from the DHCP for the WLAN Vlan assigned to the SSID activated (see pictures attached).
thanks in advance for any orientation,
    Abraham

#When both appletv and ipad on wireless on same ssid and vlan then Multicast to Unicast works perfectly without any wired side configuration. Because the packet never leaves the wlc/hits the wired interface. To conserve RF bandwidth, if you prefer to use Multicast to Multicast for this scenario make sure to have Multicast routing enabled on wired side for all involved vlan interfaces from WLC. With M-U, wireless Multicast source and destination should be on same vlan for bonjour however AP and WLC can be on different vlan. Since the Multicast source and destination of the actual traffic belong to same vlan and it is also encapsulated on unicast capwap it will forward the packet without an issue, basically it dumps the Multicast traffic on same vlan.
#With the above scenario if you prefer to use Multicast to Multicast then keep the WLC Management, AP and Wireless client on WLC's management vlan. this way it doesn't require Multicast routing on wired side. So here, if AP is on different vlan than management then the intermediate wired device need to know how to dump the Multicast packet that is sourced from Management of wlc to AP's Multicast group address that's why we need the Multicast routing for WLC and AP vlan on wired side.
#AP Multicast - Multicast is required When we've wired apple device on same vlan like wireless then need to enable Multicast routing on wired side E2E for all the WLC involved vlan interfaces i.e, wired(wireless) client, AP, WLC management VLAN.
#Difference is, as WLC receives the actual multicast data packet, when using M-U it sends out the actual Multicast data packet encapsulated in unicast capwap to AP's ip (sourced from WLC's management interface ip) and with M-M enabled, it sends the actual Multicast data packet encapsulated in unicast capwap but send to Multicast AP group ip (sourced from Management ip of wlc) that is configured. It is applicable only for Downlink traffic ie., WLC to AP, the uplink is always unicast from wireless client to ap to wlc.

  • Bonjour not working with new Cisco Gateway from Shaw

I have a PC running Windows 7 (64 bit version) and a 2nd gen iPad.  On the PC, I have AirPrint for Windows, Shairport4w, Calibre (for e-books) and AirVideo Server installed.  These used to allow me to print from my iPad to the Samsung ML-1670 connected to my PC, stream videos from my PC to my iPad, play my iPad's music through my PC's speakers (and vice versa through itunes homesharing) and download my PC-hosted e-books to my iPad's Stanza app wirelessly. It was a like a little Bonjour paradise in my house.
Then I upgraded to Shaw's new Broadband 50 internet and accordingly swapped my old SMC gateway for their new Docsis 3-capable Cisco DPC 3825.  As soon as my new gateway was installed, all Bonjour-dependent apps ceased to function properly.  I can no longer find any of my PC stuff from my iPad.  Even my PC's shared iTunes library doesn't show up in my iPad's iPod app anymore.  I've disabled all firewalls (even though firewalls should not be causing this issue), restarted PC, iPad and gateway many times, restarted the Bonjour and Airprint services alone, reinstalled Bonjour from the Apple support site, set my PC as the DMZ host in the gateway, disabled WiFi protected mode in the gateway and set the wireless to use G only, and etc, and etc.  Never do I see a change.  Cisco, Shaw and Apple tech support have all referred me to each other. I am about to give up and get my own wireless router to use instead of the free one Shaw's provided, but thought I'd check here first in case some one else had found a good solution.
A couple of additional clues: my (wired) PS3 can see the DLNA-dependent PS3 media server on my PC fine with the new gateway, and other forums do mention similar issues with a different Linksys router.  The solution there was to enable multicast filtering in the router.  I have not been able to find this option in the Cisco's settings, but perhaps it's called something else?

Same issue here.  It looks like another case of half-baked Linksys firmware (It may say Cisco, but it's the spitting image of the Linksys firmware).
Apparently with some work you can get shaw support to convert the modem/router into "bridge mode" which will make it act like a regular modem.  In any case though, these "hybrids" aren't as reliable as a separate modem and router.
Just got it today and it looks like for all of the high end features (Gigabite ethernet, wireless N) the router is still antennae-less and running shoddy Linksys firmware with bugs.  Apparently end-users are also not supposed to attempt to update the firmware (which I would have to agree with).
At the end of the day, we're going back to a DGL-4500 which worked without a problem.

  • Bonjour not working in PC?

A few months ago I received an error code from iTunes saying that "The Bonjour had been disabled....." and I didn't pay much attention because iTunes was working perfectly fine. I just bought myself a new Mac Book Air and since it has no CD drive I wanted to Homeshare my music files from my PC to my Mac.
I turned on the feature from both computers and they wouldn't appear on my iTunes menu. I went back to my iTunes on PC went to Preferences and finally sharing. There it has the same message from above. I went to my services to "re-enable" Bonjour but it says it's running. Yet, iTunes stills says it's not. I've tried repairing from Control Panel but the problem still remains. I really don't know if the firewall has to do with it, but I turned it off and it still doesn't work.
Do I have to reinstall iTunes all over again? Or is there an easier way for me to transfer my music to my Mac? Like a USB drive perhaps? I would really try to fix this problem. Please help! Thanks.
My old PC is a Windows 7 by the way.

    Hi xlucy,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The best way to copy your music from your PC to your Mac is to backup your music to an external drive first.  Here are a few articles to get you started:

  • Printing wirlessly, Windows 2000 to Airport and Bonjour not working

My set-up is as follows: Airport Extreme with printer sharing on and my printer is listed. 5 year old iMac connected to Airport Extreme via ethernet and running 10.3.9. Printer Sharing, Personal File Sharing, Internet and Windows Sharing is on and the iMac prints fine. PowerBook is connected wirelessly with an Airport card and is running the the latest Tiger. Again, Printer Sharing, Personal File Sharing, Internet Sharing and Windows Sharing, is on and my PowerBook prints fine. BTW, I'm printing through a HP 7200.
My wife has a 3-year-old IBM Thinkpad running Windows 2000 with a wireless card installed. She can join my Airport network and connect to the internet fine. Sharing is on. I've installed the HP software and it shows up in the Printers pane and I also right clicked and turned on sharing for this specific printer. I can select it and it prints fine if I hardwire the printer to the IBM's USB port.
When I installed Bonjour and the pain for available printers comes up non are listed (my wife has several printers in her Printer pane as it is a work machine and she sometimes has to bring it to work and print. At home she usually uses her own Lexmark but I want her to be able to use my printer as the Lexmark isn't that great). I've tried everything including re-installing Bonjour (yes, even the latest Bonjour) and even the HP printer software/drivers. Nothing seems to work.
And I thought Bonjour was supposed to be "seemless"?Any ideas would be much appreciated. I've been fiddling with this thing off and on for a few months now to no avail. Thanks in advance!

I appreciate your suggestions but I have a slightly
more complicated wireless network: I have an iMac G5
in my home office, and my daughter has a PC with
Windows 2000 in her room with a wireless card.
Internet comes through a DSL modem in my office into
an Airport Extreme that is networked with an Airport
Express in my daughter's room. The Express is
needed to boost the wireless signal to her room.
Move the Express to a position two thirds of the way from your Office to her room.
If the signal is weak when it arrives at the Express, it can't do anything to boost if if the computer is in the same room... It won't do anything.
If you move the AX to a position where it can receive a stronger signal it can then boost that stronger signal to an area which otherwise would receive a weak signal.
An AX can not improve a weak signal by itself, it needs to recieve a strong signal to begin with, all it does is increase the prospective range of the wireless network.
    You say
    her
computer can recognize, using Bonjour, an HP printer
    then you say
However, her computer neither sees the HP printer
Can she see or not see the printer?
I would move the AX as described and see if that makes a difference.

  • Bonjour not working after last patch installation ?

My iMac shares two external usb-drives with my daughters macMini over our home-LAN. Since the last Security Update, the connectivity has broken down:
    * the mounts fail,
    * the iMac/macMini shows-up in the finder but the shares do not show up,
    * sceen-sharing fails using Bonjour (but not : open vnc://<ipaddress>)
    * ping-ing using the Bonjour name
    * iChat Bonjour doesn't seem to be working neither
It looks, to me, as if there was something wrong with Bonjour - can anybody help ?

Ok. Problem solved apparently. It seems to have been a network problem, although i haven't understood what. Maybe it just got mixed up. The problem just went away after I completely reconfigured the macMini's network.

  • Bonjour Not Working? Try This

I had trouble getting my Cannon MP495 to Print via a Windows PC ( Cannon is USB to MAC)
In Bonjour I selected Generic MS Publisher instead of Canon MP495
    It worked Great

I have been using Bonjour for several years, but all of a sudden I can't print from my HP Windows 7 to my Canon 490.  Bonjour installs the printer and it shows up in the printer dialogue on the HP, but nothing happens when I try to print--nothing shows up in the queue.  When I use Bonjour, I don't get a choice of selecting anyting except the Canon 490 driver.  Where do you see the choice for Generic MS Publisher?

  • Bonjour not working when firewall enabled

    Hi,
There is a problem on my laptop, as I can't see any bonjour service on my LAN. I can verify on my phone that there is a Bonjour-enabled server running on my LAN. However, Bonjour Browser and Finder on my laptop show empty list.
If I manually turn off the firewall, through sudo pfctl -d, then the system behaves as expected and I'm able to see Bonjour services.
I tried removing com.apple.alf.plist to no avail. Also, I checked the disk for wrong permissions, nothing.
    Firewall settings are:
    - OFF: Block all incomming connections
    - ON: Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections
    - OFF: Enable stealth mode
    - list of apps consists only of Dropbox and python.
    Any hints?
    Thanks

  • ITunes update not working due to Bonjour

I'm trying to install the latest update for iTunes, and I keep getting an error message saying something like "the feature you are trying to use is on a network..." (can't remember the rest) and basically it's asking me to choose another location that bonjour.msi is in. The folder is right, the program is there, and it's still not working. As a result, I can't finish the update, I can't access iTunes from my start menu or any icons (I literally have to right click an mp3, hit open with iTunes, and then have it open from there). My iPod is still syncing, but it's not even recognizing my iPhone because it also gives me an Apple Mobile Device Driver error, which I assume is connected to the Bonjour issue, but maybe it's not. HELP. I have already installed the latest version of Bonjour Print Services like I saw in a recent Bonjour thread, but that did nothing for me AT ALL. I'm getting very frustrated with the entire thing because I haven't deleted a thing or changed anything about my computer, and this update is making me beyond angry.

Me three....what's up with iTunes tonight, is there a server problem?  Anyone called Apple???

  • Apple TV does not work with 877W

    Hi all,
I am using an 877W as my DSL router and trying to use Apple TV or other Apple Bonjour services over Wireless. It is simply not working although I tried several IGMP configurations. I've seen some references to 877W issues but they were all about bridging between wired and wireless. In my case though everything is on wireless (PC with iTunes, Apple TV and and iPhone to be more specific). I wanted to ask once more as I've also seen references to people having this setup working ok.
    interface Dot11Radio0
    ip address 192.168.15.1 255.255.255.0
    ip nat inside

    station-role root
    end
I tried with igmp snooping on and off with no luck, also it didn't helped to add 239.0.0.0 as a static group to the interface.
If you have apple stuff working on your 8xxW environment I appreciate if you can share your configuration, any other ideas are more than welcome.
    Many thanks,
    Cagri

    Hi Cagri,
Hope you've found an answer to your problem already, if not I had similar issues trying to get mine to work.
I did manage to get it to work in the end, I've added an article to my blog which goes over what I had to do to get it working.
Basically, configured correct multicast-routing groups, IGMP v3, pim dense-mode on both the radio and BVI interfaces and it started working.

I owned an Apple Tv and since I upgrade my internet to higher speed my Apple Tv does not work. Please someone help.

In most scenarios you shouldn't need to forward ports, however if you need to, you may be best contacting your ISP.
As with most router issues, I would recommend that you contact your ISP with details of your problem (assuming that it was your ISP that provided it to you).
There are simply too many manufacturers with different software features and settings and often different names for such features and settings, that the best advice will likely come from those that are knowledgeable about your particular router.
Make sure your router/computer allows access over the following ports
