Bonjour printing from 10.6 to 10.5

Hi all,
My girlfriend's mom has a MacPro running 10.5.8, and a networked printer (HP LaserJet 4200) attached to it by ethernet. She is sharing it over the network, and I used to be able to print to it without any problems from either mine or my girlfriend's MacBook Pro (both also running 10.5.8).
However, after I upgraded to 10.6.5, printing to it no longer works! I can still find the printer the same over the network, but all my print jobs just hang out in the queue with the status saying On Hold (Authentication required).
I tried looking through a bunch of the other threads on this topic, but I wasn't sure if it was an issue with Leopard, Snow Leopard, or the interaction of the two, as there was no info on this problem past 10.6.1. My girlfriend's laptop, which is still running 10.5.8, can still print without any difficulty. I would try upgrading everyone to Snow Leopard and seeing if that solves the problem, but her mom's MacPro is a PPC =(.
Thoughts?

For more information, I looked at the print job and clicked more info on it, noticed at the bottom it says
Job Message: /usr/libexec/cups/backend/dnssd failed.
The backend is DNS Service Discovery - aka Bonjour. The failure could be a result of the service itself or other factors. You could try running the 10.6.5 Combo updater on your MBPro - especially if you just ran Software Update to get it to 10.6.5 from 10.6.x. This can help with getting the service re-installed/repaired. You could also run a repair disk permissions via Disk Utility. This can also be helpful after a system update.
I've also noticed that the url for this printer is very different on the two machines. On mine, when i check the printer options, it says
URL: dnssd://hp%20LaserJet%204200%20%40%20Kath's%20Computer.ipp.tcp.local.
This shows that you are connecting to the Mac share via Bonjour.
whereas if I look on her MBP (which still prints fine and is running 10.5.8) it says
URL: pap://*/hp%20LaserJet%204200/LaserWriter
This shows that she is connecting to the share via AppleTalk, which has been discontinued as a service in OS X 10.6 and using an Apple LaserWriter driver. Sp you don't have this as an option.
I also suggest you look at printing directly to the HPLJ rather than connecting via the share. The printer should have its own IP address, unless the Pro is also connecting via AppleTalk. If it did have an IP address then you would be able to add the printer using IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket.

  • Can't find Bonjour printer from Windows XP machine over wireless

I have a hard-wired windows PC, a wireless Macbook Pro, and a wireless Windows PC (XP) all on the network together. All have Internet access. Only the hard-wired PC and the wireless Mac have access to the shared disk and printer hanging off the AEBS.
I installed the "Bonjour" software found here on Apple's site, but when I run the utility on the wireless windows PC, it tells me there are no Bonjour printers available.
It connects (and authenticates via WPA) no problem, so I know there is network connectivity. Why won't it see the shared printer that the other machines can see?
Is the "Bonjour Printer Wizard" the right thing to be using?
    Thanks

Instead of using Bonjour (which may be blocked by having ultra-aggressive firewall software installed on your PC) try using the manual printer setup method detailed at:

  • Bonjour printing from PC after upgrade to snow leopard

I recently upgraded to snow leopard. I now am unable to print from my PC laptop using the Canon printer attached to my iMac. Before the upgrade, I could. Any suggestions?

The blank page can be output if you select the vendors driver, in your case the Canon driver. Delete the printer queue and add it again, this time selecting a Postscript driver, such as a HP Color LaserJet model that has PS in its name.

  • Snow Leopard Breaks Bonjour Printing (HP Color Laserjet)

    Hi,
I have a MacBook (newly reformatted) with the newest version of print drivers from HP's website, connected to a HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi, with print sharing enabled and "share this printer over the network checked". It used to work well for Bonjour printing from all my other leopard macs in my house, before I updated to Snow Leopard.
All of the computers I mention here are fully updated.
    On the other computers....
The printer shows up in add a printer under Bonjour, but it takes a long time to find the driver. I have tried printing using the "Generic PostScript Printer" driver as well as the HP Color Laserjet cm1312MFP driver, but both get stuck at "Connecting to Printer". After a few minutes of this they peter out and just mark the job as completed.
This is all while the printer is awake and the host computer is awake.
Another computer, without the HP Printer solution software installed, but that still comes up with the HP Color Laserjet cm1312 MFP drivers, will say "Connected to printer" then automatically mark the job as on hold. No matter how many times I reset the print queue, on this computer nothing works.
These computers are all running 10.6.
I can print directly from the computer that is hosting the bonjour printer without any problems.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Josh

    Josh,
First, let me make sure my assumptions are correct. The printer is USB connected to the Mac that has printer sharing turned on, and the other Macs find the shared printer via Bonjour. All the Macs are running Snow Leopard. The computer with the printer connected via USB prints just fine. All of the other computers don't work.
So, let me ask this. If you open up the Sharing System Preference, and select Printer Sharing, Printer Sharing is turned on, the printer you want to share is listed in the list with a checkmark next to it, and the Users is setup so Everyone Can Print. Also when you open up the Print & Fax System Preference and click on your printer, the "Share this printer on the network" checkbox is on as well.
Next make sure that all the computer are running the HP Drivers version 2.2 from Apple Software Update (or downloaded from [Apple.com|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907]).
If all of this is true, let me ask if you connect the device to Ethernet (if possible at least temporarily) if all of the computers can find and print to the CM1312? This might help narrow things down.
    Just trying to help.

  • After installing OS X Server Bonjour printer doesn't show up

I just recently installed OS X Server 4.0.3.  Before I installed it I could see the printer as a Bonjour printer from the Mac Pro and the 4 other Macs on the network.  After installing OS X Server on the Mac Pro it cannot see the Bonjour printer.  All of the other Macs still can.
The printer was listed in the Printers & Scanners configuration, but since it wasn't working I deleted it to try and set it up again.  But now it doesn't show up the in the Printers and Scanners configuration?
Does this have anything to do with OS X Server?  Is a port being blocked?
Why isn't the printer even showing up?  I have tried connecting the printer to the DSL modem and to the Airport.  Neither worked.  The other Macs have not lost access.
I've tried resetting the printer, made sure the drivers are up to date.  Currently I have to use the Bonjour printing because OKI Data has not fixed TCP/IP (hardwired) printing with Yosemite.
    Thanks,
    David.

Now that you've turned off File Vault try resetting the printer system: OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system - Apple.
Also I wouldn't hurt to Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and disk.  Reboot normally afterward.

  • Printing from windows Bonjour through imac 10.4.8 to HP6200

  • Can not print from network share.

When a PDF document is printed from a network share whe're getting this error:
Windows cannot find 'T:\temp\test.pdf'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
This happens when a user click on the document with a right mouse click and select "print".
But when the users copies it to his desktop and then select print with the right mouse click. The document print as normally. What could be the problem?
we are using adobe reader 7.0.0

Suggest that you check to make sure that you installed Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2 on the PC.
Run the program and hopefully it will find your printer so you can select it and click to get things going.

  • Unable to print from my iPad to HP Photosmart 6520

I recently purchased this Photosmart 6520 printer so that I can print from my iPad.  I do not have a laptop that works in order to install the software that is included.  The salesperson who sold this printer to me said that I didn't need a computer in order to have this printer work w/ my iPad.
I've connected the printer to my wireless network, I've received the printer's e-mail address and enabled e-print.  On my printer it says that e-print is connected and On.
I've downloaded the eprint app on my IPad and connected it to my printer.  It recognizes my printer but when it goes to print it says "oops! we could not complete the job.  please try again. " "there was a problem during printing. please check your printer try again"
I'm getting all my jobs in the queue but none of them will print.  and when I go to my email or try to print a document from my ipad w/o using the HP e-print app its telling me that there are no airprinters found.
Please help me.  this is the 3rd printer i've bought trying to get it to print w/ my iPad and i'm not having any luck! what's wrong?  I'm not getting any errors on my printer.
I also did a wireless network test on my printer and it says no problems found.  I'm confused why isn't my iPad recognizing this airprinter?? and why can't I print.  All the print jobs say failed.

    Hi,
iOS Uses Bonjour services to communicate with the printer through the network, those relies on Multicasting.
Some routers shipped with Multicasting disabled by default and some does not support those protocols at all.
Please try printing using Wireless Direct and check for any difference, if the feature works without using the router that indicates the issue as router related and will allow us to better understand how to go further,
To set up a direct connection using Wireless Direct follow the steps below and try pritnign from your iPad:

Please let me know if the feature works while bypassing your router or not, as well be sure to clarify your router brand and model.

  • Wireless printing from windows XP on HP1025 connected to time capsule

I have a new BUSINESS DEL laptop that I want to print from on my HOME Apple network.
My printer, HP1025nw, is directly network connected to the time capsule. Printing from iMac and MacBook is working OK, however I can not seems to get the DELL ( running XP ) to print.
Network setup on the DELL is OK, I'm connected wireless, can access internet, etc... no prolem there.
    Any suggestions?

    Load bonjour for windows..
Apple network resources are hidden from the PC.. without bonjour.. once you load that it should help.
If you still have issues.. how is the printer connected.. USB is the big issue one.
But if the printer is simply plugged into ethernet or wireless connected then the apple network is irrelevant. Just follow the HP instructions for installation of network printers.

  • Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?

Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?
    a) HP printer with USB port only (no ethernet port) connected to Airport Express
    b) No issue printing from Macs
    Tests
    1) Installed Bonjour 2 - does not find printer (now uninstalled)
    2) Bonjour 3 is listed in programs but no way to access
    3) Using TCPIP address (and no Bonjour) gives 'Unsupported Personality' error when printing test page
    Regards
    Richard
p.s. why are all Windows 8.1 questios n the forum 'Locked' with no reply?

This is possible, but not with Bonjour or any other fixes.  It is just a printer set up based on the Port name of the Airport, 10.0.1.1.

  • How do I print from wifi-connected MacBook Pro to printer connected via USB to Win7 PC?

This is really frustrating, and I did not think that anything could be this difficult on a Mac. I have a Windows 7 Home Premium desktop PC connected via ethernet cable to wireless router, and a printer connected to the PC via USB. I recently bought my first ever Mac - a MacBook Pro, which is connected via wifi through the same router. All I want to do is to print files from the MacBook Pro on the printer connected to the PC. I have spent a LOT of time searching all over the web. Have tried some 2 or 3 different methods but none of them work for me, e.g. I shared the printer on the Win7 desktop and then added the printer on the MBP with the IP option with LPD/LPR Protocol, after enabling LPD Print Service on the PC. The printer gets added but when I give the command to print from the Mac, the print job shows up on the printer queue but the "Printing" soon changes to "Error Printing" (or something like that) and nothing gets printed. Then, I have to switch off the printer, remove the print job from the queue and switch on the printer again to get it out of the error state.
I also tried setting up the printer on the MBP using CUPS Admin interface, i.e. localhost:631. Again, printer gets added but document does not print. The third way I tried to add the printer was using the Windows option in the Add Printer dialog, and typing in an smb: URL but no luck with that, either.
Please, can anyone help me? This is driving me crazy
    Oh, and the devices are:
    1) Windows 7 Home Premium Desktop PC
    2) MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion
    3) HP Deskjet F2110 printer
    Thanks...

First Install Bonjour for Windows on your Windows machine. This will allow the printer to be discovered.

  • I cannot print from my iPad using airport express. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to airport express thru USB port. My laptop can print with no problem thru the express unit. My lap top is no a mac.

Good day, my iPad does not seem to pick up my printer. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to my airport express thru the USB port. My laptop which is windows type connects to the printer via airport express thru bonjour and this work well. My iPad does not pick up my printer thru the airport express. I have read about different software that you can download but this seems to be only if you are using a mac. I know my express is working fine as I can use airplay thru my iPad. Any ideas? I do not want to go to the expense of changing my printer, when there was no mention in the express details that your printer had to be AirPrint compatible or indeed wireless.

See this article to learn how to print from an iPad to your USB printer when you have a PC.  The PC will need to be running when you want to print from the iPad.

  • I have bought an airport express after being assured that I will be able to print from my IPad. I have installed airport utility on my Hp laptop and it is configured correctly but the printer I have is showing neither on laptop nor on IPad. Can u tell how

I bought an airport express after being assured that I will be able to AirPrint from my IPad. I have set up airport utility on my Hp laptop and configured it properly with the express. But still I'm not able to detect the printer attached to the USB port of airport express, neither on my laptop nor on my IPad. Can someone tell me if and how it can be done?

Who assured you that an AirPort Express would allow you to use AirPrint from an iPad. They were incorrect.
AirPrint from iPads and other iOS devices is only supported on a select few wireless network printers that expressly advertise that feature. An AirPort Express will not add that feature to a printer that does not support AirPrint. Also, for printers that do support AirPrint a wireless access point is not required since the printer needs to support wireless networks connections internally.
The HP laptop should however be able to print to the printer connected to the AirPort Express. Try also installing the Bonjour Print Services for Windows. It will make printer discovery a lot easier when using Bonjour enable devices like an AirPort Express.
